  1. Interesting.... UBCD for Win98SE Topic has disappeared... Wha hoppened to it???
  2. Nope, sorry... that folder is only the Service Pack. Keep looking for the original Install files, or go look for a replacement / buy a replacement for the original install (preferably for the Service Pack level of the initial install). I assume this is XP Pro x64? (p.s. restoring to "factory" definitely involves some kind of HP Restore Media - try HP's website; may have to purchase a Restore Media set if your friend doesn't have a set.)
  3. John was a salesman's delight when it came to any kind of unusual gimmick. His wife, Marsha, had long ago given up trying to get him to change. One day, John came home with yet another one of his unusual purchases. It was a robot that John claimed was actually a lie detector. It was just about 5:30 that afternoon when Tommy, their 11 year old son, returned home from school. Tommy was over 2 hours late. "Where have you been? Why are you over 2 hours late getting home?", they asked. "Several of us went to the library to work on an extra credit project" said Tommy. The robot walked around the table and slapped Tommy, knocking him completely out of his chair. "Son, this robot is a lie detector, now tell us where you went after school", John said. "I went to Bobby's house and watched a movie." "What did you watch?" asked Marsha. "The Ten Commandments." answered Tommy. The robot went around to Tommy and once again slapped him, knocking him off his chair. With lips quivering, Tommy got up, sat down, and said, "I'm sorry I lied. We really watched a tape called Sex Queen." "I'm ashamed of you, son," said John. "When I was your age, I never lied to my parents." The robot then walked around to John and delivered a roundhouse right that nearly knocked him out of his chair. Marsha was bent double laughing, almost in tears. "Boy, did you ever ask for that one! But you can't be too mad with Tommy. After all, he is your son!" The robot immediately walked around to Marsha, and ... slapped her ... three times!
  4. When you get it legally (i.e. buy it), you should get a new license. I must point out that the RTM, SP1, SP1a, and SP2 Releases may or may not accept the license you have. This applies to OEM, Retail (i.e. Full), and Upgrade versions. In other words, and OEM key is only good for OEM Versions, but sometimes only good for the Release initially installed. Example - Key for OEM Home SP1 accepted by OEM Home SP1 but not accepted by OEM Home SP2. If you were to (re)construct a CD from your original preinstall, then you already have the install software and the associated key (e.g. license). (This was already mentioned.) Your only other alternative is to pirate a copy and that is NOT condoned, so don't ask! edit: have you browsed for an I386 folder (not a Service Pack I386 folder)? there's your install software!
  5. OK, I'm confused... what "web" are we referring to - Internet (i.e WWW) or an internal Website (or even an Intranet)?P.S. "Removing IE" in XP does not uninstall it... it just kinda removes linkage to it (as if you had no browser). You already stated that Firfox also does not work, so it's not a browser issue... Here's a beauty of a question... how's the router set up in relation to the PC; what's the IP of the PC (should have been assigned by the router?)? I don't use a router but I know that if all is not set up correctly, the router will block incoming (and outgoing) traffic. Last but not least, (this is a big DUH!) how's the actual Software Firewall (e.g. is it blocking IExplore.exe?) set up? One more thing... try not to post another post right after your last post... try the "edit" button instead... MSFN frowns on extraneous posting....
  6. I responded to your other topic (ref. Convert to NTFS). How do you mean "bloated"? XP is XP... The only bloat you may get is in the extras installed (beyond XP) by the OEM PreInstall (or by you) and any XP-oriented components installed. Do you clean the Internet Cache occasionally and your Temp folder occasionally? Please explain... The original Install folder is either on the C: drive or the D: drive (if it is indeed the recovery partition). In other words, you already have an OEM version. If you don't understand these items you may be playing with fire... Example - Some OEM's have an XP Pro PE on the Recovery partition, have special OEMBIOS.xxx files for the Build, and another set of OEMBIOS.xxx files in the actual running XP (on the Primary or C: drive). I learned all of this the hard way when having to reconstruct a Compaq with XP Home OEM (with recovery partition). It's not an easy thing to construct an Install CD if you don't understand... Or... just go to NewEgg and get an XP Home OEM (not free, dude) and just stomp on what you have (what a waste of an already installed XP). A Clean Install involves installing on an Empty Partition from some sort of Install Media... I also want to point out that if the OEM preinstalled your Burning Software, your MS Office, etc. (I did a search on your other posts) then they will be irretrievable unless the OEM supplied you with separate CD's for each. What is your point in posting this topic, anyway?
  7. First, you say the D: drive was converted - if that was an Acer Recovery Partition that may have been a mistake, depending on whether Acer used a non-NTFS-capable OS for booting to (when recovering). Second, you say "when I tried to convert C I was said it can be done". Usually a preinstalled WinXP already has the primary partition formatted to NTFS. Not to say it wasn't FAT32; how do you know it was FAT32 - did you check the Properties? Last, you say "turned off"... are you sure it just isn't going into Standby Mode? This will cause problems with any long-running program (as in converting a large partitiion). Ensure these items are turned off in the BIOS and in the WinXP Powere Management before attempting conversion (if it is indeed FAT32).
  8. One must assume you you manual methods in addition to Spybot. You do not specify what methods you used. There are programs made by vendors (Symantec is one) to specifically remove Webhancer (as you call it "a bug", really "spyware"). One must also assume you refer to LSP-Fix as the "winsock repair tool". A simple Google-search on "webhancer" yielded these tools immediately. Did you use any of them? Please be more specific as to how you got from-there-to-here (ignoring your next post as it's not telling much either). Oh, and go here for a correction to your "netsh" command... "Google is your friend" (p.s. this topic is in the wrong forum).
  9. Windows Update also provides for an Administrative selection where you can Search for Updates by selecting the OpSys (ask for XP-other-than-XPsp2 and SP2 will be listed). You then select where you want it downloaded.
  10. Uhhhh... Google on SecureUpgrade reveals Wave Systems Corp. software installed and running. This is apparently blocking your dotNET update. What exactly is it (wave.com gives no specifics and I've never heard of this company)? Try disabling it or Stop the Process indicated (CTRL/ALT/DEL). and try your dotNET update again.
  11. What version of IE are you using? IE6SP1 has updated files in the "WEB" folder. What is RELATED.HTM? Sound like you have something else wrong (i.e. "incoming hits" - YOU HAVE BEEN FOUND AND PESTERED!). Have you tried using Spybot S&D? And if you want the exact registry entries that are supposed to be there (and the IE6SP1 RELATED.HTM) go here and get the ALEXA.ZIP (read down the thread).
  12. Have you installed this one? Look for Unofficial Q329048... Haven't heard any complaints about it. Also read this short thread for when MDGx first explained it.
  13. Been through this, and can give a vague recollection of "how to"... 1 - create a folder "SAVEPROFS" 2 - MOVE (NOT "copy") the User Profile folder to the saveprofs folder 3 - create the profile (again) 4 - COPY the saved (eg MOVE'd) User Profile from "saveprofs" to re-created This is a kind of simplistic explanation. The problem lies in the fact that the original profile folder already exists when you re-define the User Profile, hence the "duplicate". The idea behind MOVE'ing the original is to save it in case of flub-a-dubs and to allow the newly re-created one to get the correct/original foldername. I can't quite remember, but I think that the re-created one has to sign on once to re-create the correct folder name prior to COPY'ing the saved info. Go here for more info. HTH (good luck)
  14. Go here. There is also a direct link listed for the file needed. Also, the instructions for XP should be similar/the-same as for WindowsME. HTH edit - also look here. (p.s. boot into "safe mode" and "disable system restore" for best results. after cleanup create a new "restore point" by re-enabling).
  15. Same here, dude... ya gotta "turn stuff on" and "turn stuff off" as the guide suggests...
  16. edit: just reread post; no solution to give at this time. but FWIW, go to this MS article for more info...
  17. I believe Ponch may have partially hit on your problem (re "private profile"). Also, have you by chance set the attributes to "hidden"? This would prevent it from being "seen" using standard Folder View settings (Tools->Folder Options->View with "Do Not Show Hidden Files And Folders" checked).
  18. Hi Ken, In Control Panel, from Add/Remove programs, uninstall the Unofficial Improved Replacement Tools. Cheers, Sop. Better late than never...To stop Connections Systray (on the right) from running: - Double-click on TOOLS9SU.REG - Reboot - Program can be still be accessed via "Connection_Manager Network Connections Replacement Tool" in Start Menu->Programs->Accessories->System Tools (shortcut may be copied into main menu anywhere within "Windows\Start Menu" To reinstate Systray execution (what automatically happens during install) - Double-click on TOOLS9SI.REG - Reboot TOOLS9SU.REG - REGEDIT4 [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{35CEC8A3-2BE6-11D2-8773-92E220524153}] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellServiceObjectDelayLoad] "SysTray"="" TOOLS9SI.REG - REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{35CEC8A3-2BE6-11D2-8773-92E220524153}] @="SysTray" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{35CEC8A3-2BE6-11D2-8773-92E220524153}\InprocServer32] @="STOBJECT.DLL" "ThreadingModel"="Both" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellServiceObjectDelayLoad] "SysTray"="{35CEC8A3-2BE6-11D2-8773-92E220524153}" It also seems that this little tool causes a WINIPCFG.EXE failure since it "hooks" the info (try it and you'll see what I mean). I just "uninstall" the REG entry and use it at-will from the "System Tools" selection... HTH (will this "break" anything else? responses anyone?)
  19. I use tin-snips and cut them into itty-bitty pieces.
  20. User-ID-A and User-ID-B must be defined on both PC's. User-ID-A signs onto PC-A, user-ID-B signs onto PC-B. This may not be the answer you need. I don't use a router but instead use - NIC-1 on PC-A connected to Internet NIC-2 on PC-A connected to WorkGroup "device" NIC-1 on PC-B connected to Workgroup "device" (above two could have been a simple crossover cable, eliminating the "device") Firewall allows IP 192.168.x.y on both Both have IntraConnectiion and InternetConnection (via PC-A) A single folder on both shared ("Shared Documents" usually) But you probably already knew all this...
  21. THREE WOMEN , TWO YOUNGER AND ONE SENIOR CITIZEN, WERE SITTING NAKED IN A SAUNA. SUDDENLY THERE WAS A BEEPING SOUND. THE FIRST YOUNG WOMAN PRESSED HER FOREARM AND THE BEEP STOPPED. THE OTHERS LOOKED AT HER QUESTIONINGLY. "THAT WAS MY PAGER", SHE SAID. "I HAVE A MICROCHIP UNDER THE SKIN OF MY ARM." A FEW MINUTES LATER, A PHONE RANG. THE SECOND YOUNG WOMAN LIFTED HER PALM TO HER EAR. WHEN SHE FINISHED, SHE EXPLAINED, "THAT WAS MY MOBILE PHONE. I HAVE A MICROCHIP IN MY HAND." THE OLDER WOMAN FELT VERY LOW-TECH. NOT TO BE OUT-DONE, SHE DECIDED SHE HAD TO DO SOMETHING JUST AS IMPRESSIVE. SHE STEPPED OUT OF THE SAUNA AND WENT TO THE BATHROOM. SHE RETURNED WITH A PIECE OF TOILET PAPER HANGING FROM HER REAR END. THE OTHERS RAISED THEIR EYEBROWS AND STARED AT HER. THE OLDER WOMAN FINALLY SAID "WELL, WILL YOU LOOK AT THAT! I'M GETTING A FAX!!" (apologies for the CAPS; copied from an e-mail from a friend)
  22. Well, I'm just confused... This is WHQL certified (except 98/ME, which is irrelevant)... Heck, the drivers are built into most of the ("newer") Windows operating systems. Don't use the "install" program, just "point" to the appropriate folder (Install Programs stink!)... (I have one onboard, operating system had the driver already; using it now...)
  23. Originals Song list - x 01 J Sooner Or Later x 02 J Dealin' With Disaster *03 S I Need Love (Matrix Version) *04 J On Through The Night x 05 J Angel b***h x 06 J Gypsy Song (Long Way To Go) *07 S I Won't See You Again x 08 J Tyrants Unthroned x 09 J Carry On *10 J Daggers And Darts x 11 J I'm Your Believer x 12 J Chain Reaction x 13 J Say You're Mine x 14 J Another Night (Without You) *15 S I'll Hold On Asterisk indicates recorded in studio, otherwise recorded in basement. All were performed by JusTus, with the exception of the Matrix version (a group I had engineered for, photo appended to song) that I had given permission to perform. I have the JusTus version, but liked Matrix' more. Photos appended to JusTus songs were taken in front of the Thrift Shop around the corner, hence the "album" name. The "J" indicates written by the Guitarist/Vocalist, the "S" I (the Bassist/BackupVox) wrote. We tried to keep the Drummer silently behind us. The JusTus logo was spray-painted onto the basement wall so you can get an idea why those recordings would be rough (note the "balanced" scales). There were only three of us (photo on the left) so I was a bit "busy" trying to simultaneously play Bass and mix (with old cheesy equipment). Made it real rough for me when we "gigged". I considered the Studio mixes to be "not half bad". They were chosen for Studio recording since they had the least curse words. Some others recorded in the Basement were pretty decent and "upbeat", but we hadn't quite gotten the "groove" down. We were "on our way" to becoming a "real band" when the Guitarist committed "sideways" over the girl he wrote (most of) the songs about. Can someone say "Kurt Cobain"? He left two beautiful little girls and an "Angel b***h" behind. I now own the rights to all of the above songs (plus a few more never recorded). I suppose I should clarify the initial post; "constructive" criticism/comments appreciated. It doesn't have to be your "style" to appreciate them or not. Enough posting on my own "topic"... just replying to the Honorable tain. Other info on "website" (ha ha!). (p.s. most female "friends" listed are young nieces, so don't get any ideas...) HA! that song's title!!! (left as-is)
  24. Maybe not necessarily appropriate as a Topic in this forum, but I loved writing and performing, so... You may or may not like any of them, but to each their own. Criticism/comments appreciated. JusTus tunes Warning! Lyrics and/or Music may be harmful to your sense of decency and/or sanity. Go ahead... hurt my feelings! (the "website" ain't that big of a deal) Edit - Forgot to mention this is a MySpace Artist profile (vs Standard Profile)... You have to actually click on the player and then click on a song. It doesn't automatically start playing or randomize (I turned those off). No software is installed on your computer; it "runs" on the Server... Edit#2 - Disclaimer - I neither endorse nor recommend any "items" displayed at the top of the "website" which are out of my control. If I could figure out how to get my 3d-party Firewall to allow access, I would just put it on my own PC. I assure you, my/our songs are not for commercial gain. The link provided and the topic/poll were strictly for critical opinions and suggestions. Thank you...
