  1. Huh! (repeating myself...) Reckon if R.Loew has a viable patch that's a vast improvement in lieu of LLXX' patch, it would be soooo nice if he would just "give it up" instead of charging for a patch to an "obsolete" OS. Granted, there a quite a number of persons still using the "obsolete" OS, but, c'mon, wouldn't it be better (from a marketing point of view; he got "yelled at" for doing that in MSFN) to just "release" it openly and try to gain a name for being good at what he does, then go on to more profitable (read $$$ instead of $) ventures? Not knocking your rationale; you do need a "proper" fix if your gonna use a 137gb+ HDD... just seems kinda way too capitalistic. Let us know how popping that $10 works...
  2. ???First, the two "xcopy" lines don't need "start /w", they'll function within the aforementioned ".bat/.cmd" file. As for the two lines with EXE files to be executed, here is a sample for soporific's autopatcher that absolutely waits until execution completes (all over the place!) - START /W "%LOC8%\%PARTH%\%FILES%" %ARGUS% Naturally, there are variables (passed from .bat-to-.bat). - loc8 = starting folder (control .bat files) - parth = next lower folder (where the program is) - files = program to execute - argus = program arguments So an example of how this should work for you is - START /WAIT "P:\CADD\_CAD Programs\AC 11 Install\AC11 USA 970.exe" Clueless as to why it shouldn't work (no extra DOS boxes, just executable display stuff)...
  3. Dunno if any of the following is biting you or not (in WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI) - Under [386Enh] section - (yours, ignoring any other irrelevant entries) PagingDrive=C: MinPagingFileSize=392192 MinSPs=16 ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 DMABufferSize=64 PageBuffers=4 (mine) EMMEXCLUDE=C000-CFFF MaxPhysPage=39999 Just for funsies, try removing (I think a semi-colon ";" in column 1 may negate it instead of deleting the line) all the lines I listed and reboot. Go here for an explanation of (many ) SYSTEM.INI parameters - http://www.mdgx.com/lastweek.htm#SYSINI For your Real Memory (the actual hardware) they're really unnecessary (you have plenty); at least until you boot cleanly again. FWIW, I had a little bit of a problem using the Conservative(etc) setting. Don't forget to SAVE after edit; if you are forced into "save as", just save as SYSTEM.TXT, go into WinExplorer to Windows folder and rename SYSTEM.INI to SYSTEM.INX then rename SYSTEM.TXT to SYSTEM.INI, reboot... BIOS??? Must stink and need updating; good luck with that since you have a non-functional floppy. Just for the heck of it, try going into "Setup Manager", press ENTER while a given Heading is "highlited" (by moving left/right with the "arrow" keys); bet you have access to something good... heck, the floppy may even be disabled! There are always some kind of "help" things listed at the bottom of any given sub-menu (those selected by moving around using the "arrow" keys then pressing ENTER or some-such). Sorry, it all just don't sem to track; you must not be selecting anything from the MASTER menu (which is the first screen you see). Go ahead and blow away all the extra gunk in your posts above; no longer needed, seems ok...
  4. OUCH!!!! Remember to put this large/long stuff inside a "codebox" (selections to the left of "add reply" box; use full reply, not fast reply). Install files... everything there and then some (take time to find out what the heck is all there)... Based upon your model there is no reason whatsoever you can't get into the BIOS. Since you say you have the Recovery CD, go here - http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/documen...ocname=bph07142 to see how to initiate a Recovery. Don't do this yet, though, just read. If indeed you have a C: partition, a D: partition, and some "unpartitioned space" (confirm this using FDISK from MS-DOS Prompt), you may be able to do a "base install" of 98SE on it to get back up-and-running (install from the CABS folder), then Restore to that partition. Again, GET THOSE KEYS from Aida32 and be ready, 'cause anything on the original C: drive ) beyond what's installed from the Recovery CD) will have to be re-installed. Anything on "old" C: drive that you want to keep (pics, music, etc) can then be copied over to the "new" C: drive, then screw the "old" one. DOH!!! Can't be right! Did you change a setting in the Control Panel?Start->Settings->Control Panel->System then the Performance tab (at top), then Virtual Memory (at bottom) It better have the "Let Windows Manage" dot filled... do not specify your own! If the value is set too high it will consume your hard drive. Only other thing to cause it to get large is if you have some kind of "eat memory" virus. Nope, no "unallocated space"...
  5. @jaclaz - thx for links; again you dah man! pointed another person to your post above...
  6. "digitaldomain"? Surely you're not trying to add youre computer to a domain named "digitaldomain" (www.digitaldomain.com)! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_name http://www.petri.co.il/requirements_when_j...ng_a_domain.htm Again, what is your Realtek (the NIC) connected to? (@work connection?) Can't see how you get internet access with a static ip unless it's connected to a router (and set up accordingly).
  7. Quick check on Toshiba A60 (Satellite - several variations, fairly new kinda). Restore CD should work. And don't understand why can't boot from XP Pro Full; should be bootable. BIOS set correctly (boots from Recovery???)? Try booting that XP Pro from someone else' PC (but don't run it)... from one of the BIOS installation/update files - "HWSetup" must be some kind of BIOS(?) thing. Just try the first method for the XP Pro... (Toshiba site doesn't say too much about BIOS)go to here at the bottom of post to find a link to creating a Bootable Recovery Console CD (provided that you can boot to it; probably useless for your particular problem).
  8. edited - all removed since appears to be irrelevant (poster error)
  9. Possible, yes...Problematic, yes... Nightmare, definitely... It's also possible to install several Win9x systems on a given partition, but not recommended...
  10. That having been said, the list you will get from AIDA32 should be invaluable for your problem resolution. No offense (again), just a kind of curiosity that you couldn't get into the BIOS... I, too have "relative experience" (Mainframe, mostly - buh-byee!); these beasties are toughies, though... at least Mainframes were more-or-less "standardized" (and source code was available for an extra $)... Good luck digging through the list. Hope it isn't hardware related. (a thought... a bad driver?) And if you have the CABS/Install files (should be there) you can use a product call "BootIt NG" ("Next Generation"; trialware) for installing to a second partition (from scratch) as a last resort (or at least to see if the problem persists). Just don't "install" it; use the functions (Maintenance selection) of the Boot Floppy to "shrink" the primary and to create another "primary" in the retrieved space (after a Defrag of the original primary first). If you wish to pursue that course, let me know and I'll try to assist... it's easy and painless. Oh yeah... fair warning. Some of the "unofficial" stuff (very few) doesn't correctly/accurately uninstall. Ask (in the appropriate topic) first. There is definitely a recommended sequence to the installation of multiples. I say this since you obviously have WinME files on your system...
  11. ? I was under the impression that if any MSS-type hardware was "inserted" at any time that it's "required" to use the "safely remove" (in the Taskbar/Systray area) to "remove" them; just "unplugging them" don't do it (remains in the Device Manager)... Or am I just dumb and missed the point? (could be...)
  12. Win98 - 10yo (dates 5-98?) Win98SE - 9yo (dates 4-99?) (from my failing memory)
  13. nnnggg! XP Pro Upgrade or Full (Retail)? HDD going bad? Check Toshiba website for this kind of problem? ("heard" toshiba may have "issues"...) If XP Pro Full, learn how to use DiskPart (info at MS maybe) and just "blow away" the primary and install XP Pro directly (if "Full", should be bootable; diskpart available at "recovery console"). File/Hive "SYSTEM" is the most important piece of the opsys... the "chkdsk" may have crapped it... yeah, the failure of "recovery disk" could have hosed you too (retry it?)... Using "ntfs4dos" implies that you may have a "floppy drive". Also, any other options on that "recovery disk"?
  14. "Internet Explorer->Help->About Internet Explorer" indicates current "cipher strength" (this is an Internet Explorer-specific item; not "directly" related to W2K); simply upgrading to IE6SP1 will give 128-bit regardless(?)... Won't swear to what I just said... (haven't used W2K recently) Best bet is to install the SP's then check Windows Update to see if it shows; this will give you a definitive answer... note - if it shows, download IE6SP1, install it, then check WU again to see if still shows/gone to "prove my assumption" (either correct or out-of-my-tree).
  15. What's that Realtek connected to??? The IP shown implies a Local Area Connection generally used by Local Workgroups (the Workgroup Name) and/or PC's connected to a specific Server Domain (the joined-to Domain Name); also used in setting up Internet Connection Sharing and (?) Virtual PC connections... If your Wireless is giving access to the Internet and the Realtek isn't connected to anything, then the IP's in question (on the Realtek) won't be accessible (not connected)... Noticed also that this is a Static IP setting (DHCP disabled), so, yep... hard-coded! (not too familiar with Wireless... don't have it myself...; is this by chance a Laptop?)
  16. edited - removed no longer needed text; link kept Here is the link to the page I quoted - http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/documen...94479&os=20
  17. Uhhh, yeah... never seen that, even in "unofficial" patches... but I don't think that's the problem. (been using the "unofficial" patches, have we? 's ok, you just may have went overboard or installed in the "wrong sequence")First need to make sure BIOS is properly recognizing your HDD (ref. Ponch' post). We may have to (since you have plenty of HDD space) resort to a "stunt" to "clean install" 98SE on a separate partition. More on this later/tomorrow; this is Dec-31-07, after all... Don't worry, this "stunt" won't cause a loss of the "original" install partition or data, pics, music, etc., but may require complete re-install of any/all software you have installed since (on the "new" paritition)... we'll see how it goes. For now, just enjoy the nite and see ya tomorrow... oh yeah, slim your "quotes" down (use the DEL key)... no need to repeat everything, just what's relevant
  18. Is this an HTML that you created (including the Link) or one that you "saved" (as GrofLuigi suggests)? I believe that an HTML that contains a valid Link (whether pointing to a website or your HDD) is going to give this due to the "unsafe list" rule regardless of what you want it to do. I have "saved" as "HTML-Only" and downloaded/saved files linked to into the same folder and always get the "Save/Run" dialog (and the HTML link points to the file on the HDD), with the Default IE/Windows Install settings (never changed anything, remember?). Bottom line (anyone want to correct me, feel free) is you can't stop it from happening as the HTML is "set up / coded". BTW, the "list" is (as the links I provided suggest) doesn't state that it's actually "unsafe", just potentially unsafe, hence the requirement to ask what action you want to take. If your intent is to play the MP3, don't do it from within an HTML, do it from a Player directly; or execute a Player from within the HTML using correct "coding techniques" (of which I am not knowledgable; look elsewhere for how-to - the "setup / coded" reference above). This is how, e.g. MySpace, does it...
  19. uhhh, some toopid questions that may have a bearing(?) (Compaq ) - - does you BIOS have "Auto" set for detecting the HDD? force it to re-detect (there's a selection for that in main menu); sometimes bad setting will cause BAAAD things to happen DO THIS FIRST! - do you have enough space on HDD, e.g. clearing Internet Cache, deleting contents of TEMP folder, emptying Recycle Bin... (assume YES since you downloaded stuff) - are you absolutely certain you don't have a virus (eg a memory-eating one); they "hide" under real Opsys filenames sometimes... If it's pre-installed Win98 (SE?), get the WINDOWS\OPTIONS folder off-HDD (C-drive) backed up at least and the WINDOWS\INF folder (to help get a clue of you drivers). I suggest this in the event that you may have to re-install. Oh, yeah, get you Windows Install Key out of the Registry (NOT product-id) and write it down. Also back up any files that you don't want to lose and find out what software (other than Windows) is is installed and make sure you have (Re)Installs. (Last-resort stuff here...) It really seems like you have something running at startup that is "eating" your system (no indication of that though). But a BIOS setting misinterpreting your HDD parameters will cause real havoc. Selecting the "Autodetect" then selecting "Y" on the first HDD should force it to correctly detect. One more silly thing (probably won't help?) - boot to Safe/Command-Prompt and delete WINDOWS\WIN386.SWP and reboot (forces a rebuild of the Swap file). I hesitate to suggest a Re-Install of Windows (from Windows\Options\Cabs folder) because it's not a totally reliable solution. (GET THAT COA KEY!)... Anyone else want to chip in and help?
  20. nuts! (per the "tshoot" messages) just boot into safe mode command-prompt only (using f8 at bootup) then copy config.sys config.bak the above will backup up the offender (so you still have the "modified original") you can do the same with autoexec.bat if you want... (-> autoexec.bak) now reboot and edit (notepad) the config.sys/autoexec.bat (whatever/both) and completely remove the lines then save... just REM'ing those lines shouldn't have made the messages, but this way POOF no line to give a message... (looks like maybe you need to get rid of entries in both autoexec.bat and config.sys...) Cleaned! @RainyShadow - good 'splanation! such a nice person!
  21. cleared and working... odd! thx (should have cleared it while not in IE... DOH!)
  22. apparently always lists them - MS paranoia i guess... ignore them (don't download/run; check them as "never show again") or just download/run them and they won't show again. HTH edit - was only referring to the Malicious tools...
  23. "save/open/cancel"... Not sure of that... Should have taken action you specified when you "unchecked" it for that type (I think, ennyhoo, from light search/reading on it). Checkbox" missing - go here for "how to reset" (IE7 specific) - http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/06/15/r...ox-in-vista-ie/ It talks about Vista, but probably applies to all IE6/IE7 versions (I have IE6 and that REG key exists but has no values, sincle I always want to be asked). Try looking there, clear them out, and try it again(?)... edit - another discussion on the subject - http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-693095.php (would give you MSFN topics/posts on the subject but i'm a kinda google-er...) oh and here - "unsafe" list - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;EN-US;291369 and here's a tidbit - ok!!! - "enhanced security" - read here also - http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...xp/iesecxp.mspx just do a search on "file download - security warning"; appears to be a lot of reasons why this is happening...
  24. For some strange reason, today going to MS.COM is rather "slow" (or page not even loading...). I also noticed that I repeatedly get a pop-up getting offered to participate in SilverStreak Beta search engine. Is this new search engine what's causing this? Or is MS just being clobbered due to all those Vista computers that people got on Christmas and are updating them all at once? (Maybe it's just me, but no other sites are doing this...)
  25. If I do a selective startup, with load startup items unchecked - it seems to start fine.So now it should be easy to isolate.. right? Wrong! I can try adding different entries one at a time, BUT , again no particular pattern. I add only 2 it boots... try again it freezes ...and so on. My question.. is there a way to delete and replace my startup entries, or a better way to check them for corruption?? Which two work? Any two? Which one/ones cause/causes freeze? No help if you don't give specifics... How about listing the following -system.ini win.ini autoexec.bat config.sys start menu->programs->startup (has a list of items loaded for your user profile any items listed in the registry as Run/Runonce/Runservices, etc. (may be listed in msconfig; AFAIK, all items above will be listed in msconfig) these are the main items that load drivers/etc at startup. please use "insert codebox" function under "quick access" during "reply". go here - http://www.geocities.com/~budallen/bootboot.html for an explanation of what we are looking for. also here - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/127970 for particulars on ndis2sup.vxd. it may not even matter for that VXD; see here - what's the use of ndis2sup.vxd. in other words, something is being loaded that's clobbering you and if that's all that's showing in bootlog.txt, then we need to look somewhere else at what item is causing it. surely "random" changes via msconfig can/can't cause it to boot/not-boot. please be more specific (make the lists)...
