Autopatcher or Windows Updates Downloader (second is the link you find in beat's post topic-link). Either one may do as they download directly from Microsoft. Autopatcher only works with SP3 - don't remember whether WUD will do them for pre-SP3 or not.

Uhhh... Play a tune, record it, put it on a myspace Musician's/Artist's account (they are different... check it first before signing up). Get enthusiasm about what you can do for or give to others. Life goes on in spite of itself. Participate in it and tell it to screw itself, you're here to stay. Try to find things positive in yourself as well as others. "LIVE, Spock LIVE!" You are here for a reason, find out what it is. You must be smart, so use that to your advantage. Take a deep breath and go "Ahhhhh, that felt good". Take care of yourself, and life will take care of you. Need I say more? Been there, friend; it wasn't pretty, but I pulled through, so can you. - really would like to hear some licks - FWIW - www.myspace.com/andjustus4all not many people listen, but it's a treat when they do... And explore all your options for that ride... you really need that piece of paper. You may have friends that can hook you up that you didn't even know you had... Peace, Brother!

Hmmm - new feature of IE7? I'm using IE6 so... No option like that for me. Still, something wierd going on (Add-Ons are the ActiveX's). So, what about the statement you made about "Windows Update thinks I have Vista" - not applicable to you, I assume? Still, the CODE i supplied above may shed some light. Indeed, by "shutting off" all of the Add-Ons, I'm not sure how it would even have worked, since several are for Windows Update (e.g. the ActiveX in question)... MUWEB.DLL, WUWEB.DLL. Kind of sounds like one of the Setup's for Update may have failed previously (Windows Update Agent). And if you go here - http://forums.techarena.in/windows-update/749234.htm there's some info specific to how to fix it all when goofed up... Try the above (with the AddOns activated, natch), and see if that fixes you... edit - "FunWebProducts" ???? OMG! Look at this - http://www.tnet.com/fun-web-products.php and here (same display you get) - http://www.networkworld.com/newsletters/we...3/1208web2.html A quick search on that reveals Spyware/Adware. May or may not be interfering with Updates. Download Spybot (google for it) and install/run it. Helpful hint - never download and install things until you first research (Google is your friend). Hope the above two items help...

REGEDIT is not dangerous unless you actually delete or modify something. Let's try something here that may shed some light on this... Open/Start/Run Notepad. Copy the following into it - <HTML> <HEAD> </HEAD> <BODY> <script LANGUAGE="VBScript"> document.write(navigator.userAgent) </SCRIPT> </BODY> </HTML>Now save it as anything.html ("Save As" and in the bottom pull-down "Save as type = All Files". Open "My Documents" (where it probably saved) and double click on "anything.html". If you get a warning about "allowing Active Content", click on it and let it run. A screen will show; copy the contents of that screen and post it here. Something, by golly, is causing this strange behavior (sending bad info via IE7 to the update site). This may help find out what...

How do I detect hidden spyware
submix8c replied to neophyte61's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
FYI, some legitimate software vendors have this type of application specifically to find out what you are doing. They usually get purchased by someone who suspects you of doing something "naughty" and want to catch you at it (for whatever reason). You may play he!! finding out what it is to remove it since it's sometimes more stealthy than an actual virus and may not show up with any removal tools (it is after all legitimate...). Your only other option if you can't remove it would be to back up your "stuff" (wink) and reload. Keep browsing around for helpful hints - and Google on some of the things mentioned (e.g. "Process Explorer", HijackThis, etc.). Could be an ActiveX, a RUN item, or any other number of things. Hope I didn't offend... you may just be a victim of extreme suspicion. Good luck... -
XP Pro Retail? Ain't gonna happen. The idea behind the link given is for "same hardware configuration" for OEM Builders. Even if you "cloned" the installation from PC-A to PC-B (hardware different) it will be detected as a new configuration and require re-activation. You need to get a separate license for each PC.Unless I'm missing something, anyone?

Some very specific info on the User Agent strings from MSDN - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms537503.aspx Something must have fiddled with them to cause Update to think you have Vista. Read in the above link I gave (it's short), and go into RegEdit, and see if something is horked up... Edit - Also, try resetting in "IExplorer->Tools->Internet Options->Security" the following - under "Security" tab, click both "Internet" and "Trusted Sites" and Reset the "Security Level" to "Default". This is where the ActiveX stuff comes into play. You (or something) may have altered these settings causing them to never allow installation...

Well, stupid question... Did you install Vista Transformation Pack? Seems to be a problem with the v8.01 that doesn't play well with XP-SP3 and requires an update/upgrade along with a couple of other items. http://www.windowsxlive.net/ And I noticed a post you made in another thread requesting specific information on a "fix" for the problem. Hope the "fix" poster replies to your request. edit - Uhhh, found the reference to the User Agent string referenced in the other thread (maybe). Not sure how/why this happens but go here - http://www.fiddlertool.com/ua.aspx and download (not run) the first REG file and then right-click/Edit it. You'll find the value in question (maybe). HTH

Unfortunately not geek, it takes me to a page where it provides a keyword search facility, asks me to select a product, operating system and category, but when I put 'info bar' or any other relevant word which may find the problem and or solution, all I get is no word matches exist. So, about as useful as a chocolate kettle I'm Afraid. By the way, I already have the update site as one of my trusted.I'm not too concerned about this, because I am getting my important updates automatically, it's just irritating, and would still like to get it sorted. From my notes (happened to me, too) - Internet Explorer->Tool>Options->Security->Trusted Sites 1 - turn off Require HTTPS Verify 2 - add http://*.update.microsoft.com 3 - add https://*.update.microsoft.com 4 - add http://download.windowsupdate.com This is what you should have gotten from the info geek gave you. Dunno why you didn't get there; it's how I figured it out. And I believe you need all of the above items specified.

VLite - Why do I need 1.3GB AIK?!
submix8c replied to clevermax's topic in Unattended Windows Vista/Server 2008
Does this help? 850-MB-download-to-use-Vlite? edit - (also see next post) the above refers to "wingapi.dll"; correct name appears to be "wimgapi.dll", and perhaps other items may be necessary. Follow next post's advice... -
Agreed; if there's been no response within two years (less maybe?), it's probably a pointless thread. I've fallen into a "trap" of responding to another's post in a thread looong dead (rather embarassing). If there's been a number of reponses rather recent, then it more than likely still warrants activity. Fortunately, quite a few have caught unwarranted activity and made the point within. Go for it. (Who the heck searches down old posts anyway? A result of the "related" feature?) Aaarrggg! "Similar Topics" even in this yields nearly 2-yr-old threads; did anyone notice?

Login another account without loging out current account
submix8c replied to winderaim's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Only other thing I can think of is Remote Desktop (can be used on a LAN as well) and log on from another computer to correct whatever needs corrected. I believe this facility is on Windows Server (2k3 and up). It will allow a user on the Server to have restricted access and you (via another PC) to have full access. Need to ensure it's setup on the server; just don't remember all the requirements etc. Theoretically, this can be done via an XP and up (don't know about previous versions or if Home is ok too). -
True...But here's a "loose translation" for the sake of expediency (Babelfish, forgiving the bad parts) - Rear people, I have multi-boat a DVD provided after the guidance of http://flyakite.msfn.org/ and fold so far also all prima. Since I would like to have integrated however different drivers, I fell back for the adjustment of my XP-installations to N-Lite and over it my appropriate drivers had integrated. Before I worked with the MB-DVD, my XP-installations prima functioned, and with " blauen" Setup completely at the beginning (thus Textmode Setup), it copied also good all driver files from the NLDRV listing on the plate. That does not make it no more now however somehow… Setup interrupts itself stop with the message which it the file xyz did not find. Amusing way functioned however copying from $OEM$ the listing… does not help me however for my driver problem. Does someone have an idea!?!?!? My response - Try Burning the disk at a slower speed. Sometime high speed burns cause reading errors. 16x max. Badly translated (via Babelfish) - Versuchen Sie, die Scheibe mit einer langsameren Geschwindigkeit zu brennen. Manchmal Hochgeschwindigkeitsbrände verursachen Lesefehler. 16x max. Hope this was close - Please try to get a friend to help with translations if you don't speak english well. "Hoffen Sie, dass dieses nah war - versuchen Sie bitte, einen Freund zu veranlassen, bei den Übersetzungen zu helfen wenn Sie nicht sprechen Englisch gut." (arrrrgg!!!) Und Willcommen, freund! (no, I'm not encouraging non-english, just being polite)

Nothing higher than Win98SE. Agree on the suggestions as to "how to get it installed". A final option (if you can find it) is to install Windows For Workgroups (WFW 3.11) first via floppy then decide how to connect to install the Win9x variety (Win3.x can then be "deleted"). Just a variation on the above suggestions; you still need to "connect" (Laplink easiest). DOH! Forgot - DOS 6(?) can connect you too. Software downloadable from MS FTP site (not DOS, the "connection" software). 5 Floppies total to get up-and-running. And won't swear to this (never tried it) but perhaps a simple Boot Floppy might be "copied" to the HDD then get the Connection Software installed - 3(?) floppies. May actually be easiest to do as suggested - disconnect the HDD, move it, format it, copy the install files, put it back, boot floppy, then run Setup. Careful opening up the lappie!

Can malware replace legit Windows files?
submix8c replied to mraeryceos's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
"Replaced" files that are Malware can be overwritten with "legit" files can be done with an "over-top reinstall" without loss of data, profiles, post-installed software, etc. Bear in mind that Malware can have a module named the same as a good file in a different folder that will still cause damage (or whatever) becuse it gets executed before the good one (ref. the execution PATH). Best bet is use all recommended Malware Cleaners / Scanners, check the registry (HijackThis is a good one), then maybe (if necessary) do an "over the top reinstall". There will more than likely be lots of stray Malware hiding if you don't "clean" the system. Can you describe any symptoms that leads you to believe you're "infected"? There are usually tell-tale signs. If so, post here... HTH and Good Luck! -
Login another account without loging out current account
submix8c replied to winderaim's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Again, AFAIK not possible... lacks the support and was not designed for it. I suppose someone may be able to "fiddle" with swapping some modules from XP, but I doubt it. Tha main objective of a Server is to Serve. AFAIK, a given user logs on to administer and/or operate (depending on it's purpose) it for access by the User community and it will do no more than act as a server. XP is not a Server system, rather a User system. That may be the reason you can get away with the method proposed in the previous post (on XP) but not on your system (a Server). "Fast User Switching" didn't even appear until XP. It didn't even exist on W2K-Pro (precursor to XP-Pro, the big brother of XP-Home). It's intentionally not there (partly) for the Security of the Server. I can't really remember if Linux allows simultaneous logons onto a single machine (as you describe), but definitely not on Windows. Besides, why would you want to do that anyway? Rationale, please? And comments anyone on my above assertions? -
what services WINXP need for internet connection ?
submix8c replied to Eliasrd's topic in Windows XP
At the risk of getting my knuckles cracked, I will agree that the remainder of my response was somewhat facetious. "Very helpful." Sarcastic chastisement. But you have to admit, it got someone to answer specifically. It may still not be the complete answer though, since the question was posed rather vaguely in what appears to be the wrong forum. Be careful of what "useful stuff" you delete as it may be necessary for other functionality. Obvious communication gap... If I have offended you, Eliasrd, please accept my humble apologies. And welcome to MSFN. We do try to play nice here... -
Login another account without loging out current account
submix8c replied to winderaim's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Not possible. It's a Server... One user at a time, except where Users have been defined for local/remote access from another PC... No Windows Server system will allow that; not supported... -
Network Setup So I Can Use 9x Without Keyboard & Mouse
submix8c replied to Vince4Amy's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Also, won't swear to this, but the BIOS needs to be set for ignoring No Keyboard (the monitor is a given in any OS). -
go here - http://www.mdgx.com/INF_web/ for a primer on INF's. reference is 9x/me, but still relatively the same. edit - scratch that for your purpose... you probably already know... and you now have a knowledgable guru on hand (see above, duh!)...

I assume you mean "reinstall", not "reformat". A proper "clean reinstall" would involve first deleting said partition (when the Where Do You Want To Install screen comes up), then allowing the installation to (re)create the partition, format it, then proceed with installation. Try it again as above. Should have worked. Roughly another 45-minute repeat task. Don't forget to Press F5 when msg "Press F6" shows and select "ACPI Computer" otherwise auto-shutdown won't work (depends on the type of CPU/MOBO you have). One more thing... don't interrupt the Update process... let it finish. That reboot was not a good thing!

Off-the-wall possibility... Try turning off/unplugging the Cable/DSL modem (assuming that's what you have and no router) for about 20 seconds, then turn on/plug in. Not sure why it happens (not an expert by any means), but this has occurred with me before and that's what I did to correct it. It appears to "force" the modem to accept a new NIC with a different MAC address (clears its "brains"). Or... maybe (?) a dirty contact in the other PC's NIC. HTH

First, can't help in reference to SATA drives (don't have) but I have seen somewhere references to a BIOS setting. With that in mind, it could be the reason a Bootable XP CD doesn't see it. Also, put the appropriate SATA drivers on a Floppy as that's where a Standard Bootable XP CD expects to find them. Second, any CD burned for your purpose may be burned at too high of a speed, hence "unreadable". Third, this topic should have maybe been put here - http://www.msfn.org/board/Malware-Preventi...urity-f114.html

Concur with K... Some files are different for some OEM's installation. If it was the "hidden partition" deal, he should have noticed that HP (and Compaq) allow for a "backup reinstallation set" via the Programs selection (burns the whole reinstall set). Only works with HP/Campaq (and others) since it's "tied" to a given PC. Best bet is go to the vendor and bite the bullet on the "reinstall" set, as K stated. Otherwise, if you can find out which (can't say here) files are "different" you may be able to constuct an OEM disk for that paricular PC (not sure; always was wise enough to "burn the reinstall" first opportunity). Or, maybe an HP representative may be able to help. DOH! If that partition hasn't been wiped/overwritten, you might get lucky enough to "retrieve" it (not sure how or with what tool if the MFT has been wiped; usually the Hidden Partition is FAT32, though, so that may help).
