Help with Offline files and redirect
submix8c replied to AnthonyAbbey's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Ok... here's from GPO Help (GPO is in the MMC Snap-In; appears you are using Active Directory; makes sense in business environment) - So... somewere you may want to allow for the files/folder that you want to allow (or maybe not) for synching/multi-user-update. As for the Desktops, it appears that the point is to "back them up" on the server. Not sure. Check your server(s) for those items that are being synched. And FWIW check "Steve" Desktop; maybe there is a large folder or file placed there that's causing a long synch. I would surmise that maybe one PC may not be connected at the synch-time and cause an error. If I'm right in my assumptions... Don't depend on my responses as a definitive answer. Others more knowledgeable may chime in soon. Read up in the Help (press F1 on server desktop - search GPO and go from there) under Concepts so you can make sense of what-you-have and what-you-want (what makes sense) and/or what-is-happening. -
Hmmm - FWIW, so far I've found the firmware v1.02 at http://au.lgservice.com/ You have to use the "Download Drivers", ask for "DVD-ROM(writer)" and enter "GSA-H54N". If you already have this firmware, then ??? Also, note what I said about multiple burning software, the DMA settings, etc. Please try burning again and tell us what the error message is. The solution may be quite simple depending on the error. Nero will write a log. If you post it, put it in a CodeBox (or an attachment) so it won't go on-and-on. This may help... p.s. also unnecessary to give complete quote in your posts. edit to "just the pertinent". saves space... edit - Check! see below for newer firmware...

Huh... try this and be very careful! http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben...p;x=12&y=13 Something about Upper/Lower Filters registry entries. Check those entries first before trying my suggestions above. And also note that the Service should be stopped/disabled as I said above; and that more than one burning software might cause a problem (conflicts). I'll help look around some more. And cut Kel some slack... I've noted that Moderators, Administrators, and Supervisors have been a little busy tracking and banning some very baaaad people. Makes them kranky I think. edit - (see below; well above is true...) Kel asks a good question about the Firmware. Older firmware sometimes will not burn to newer Media (CD's DVD's etc). Also note that some folks have found their Readers/Burners set to Cable Select on the jumpers (in back of the device) and this could cause a problem. Check them and ensure the jumpers are set correctly (not Cable Select). Final Note - setting DMA in Device Manager usually works best. Addendum - Recognized by the Burner Software as a Burner?

Uhhh, you might want to go to MySpace and look and post in their forums. Your MySpace ID allows for that. Normally, this type of software is not discussed here; you might get lucky and someone with a similar problem may be able to help. Otherwise, best bet is go to MySpace since that's where a handful of MySpace knowledgeable folks are. P.S. Don't bother asking Tom... he won't answer!

Help with Offline files and redirect
submix8c replied to AnthonyAbbey's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
I, too, am a noob at this BUT... A quick read of serch-term "Offline" in Windows Help indicates that this is for continuing to work with a file COPY (?) that is on the server while disconnected from it. Synchronization must be correctly set up an all PC's in question (and the Server) in order for it to work (e.g. everyone gets the "current" copy after synchronization). It may be similar to a problem of remote computers accessing a mainframe. Only one user should be updating at a given time (r.e. Mainframe CICS) and two or more users have that "copy" offline and continue to change it. Now when synchronization occurs, there is a discrepancy in the corrrect version. I would tend to think that if a particular file is to be updated by multiple persons that the file should be presented as "always update online" or "never update offline". How this could be done in this environment (not-mainframe) I couldn't say. I believe that "disabling" will disallow "floating copies". I notice also that in Internet Explorer Options (under "Advanced") there is a tick-mark for "Synchronize Offline on Schedule". BTW, you don't mention exactly what problem occurs on just the 1 or 2 PC's. HTH (anyone smarter than either of us can chip right in there and make us smarter too) -
While google-searching on the corrsponding LG DVD/CD-ROM (not burner), I stumbled across an indication that these burners tend to fail. Do a Google on you model "GSA-H54N" and you might get a decent answer - unless someone else has one and has exprienced this. Also, you might try (for funsies), going into Safe Mode (F8 at bootup), going into the Device Manager, selecting "View Hidden" (at the top), remove all CD/DVD devices (the will be found again upon normal reboot), and remove all "Devices" (somewhere toward the bottom - these are the current and previous Mounts - previous/nonexistent being the light-gray ones). Warning! Removing ALL devices will remove ALL drive letters assigned. They will/should be re-assigned upon normal reboot. So make note of any drive-letters originally assigned and re-assign them in Disk Management. If the are NOT showing up in Disk Management (after removing devices/rebooting), just ADD them/assign the drive letters there. You may have to reboot again for the changes to take effect. A final note that sometimes the built-in XP Burning Service interrupts the installed burning software. Stop and Disable it ("IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service"); it's not needed or wanted with Burning Software. edit - forgot to ask - did it EVER burn/erase?

How I secure folder in workgroup?
submix8c replied to elcinhuseyn's topic in Networks and the Internet
1 - The folders that are shared have a "hand" over top of the icon (indicating "Shared"). Right-click on that icon and you'll see some tabs at the top. I suggest you use "Windows Help" (press F1 from the Desktop) and read up on "Sharing". 2 - For "Users and Groups", "Administrative Tools" then "Computer Management"; or right-click "My Computer" and select "Manage". Also read up on this subject. This screen will also show the "Shared Folders" list, among other things. You now indicate 2003 Server as your Operating System. Is this where all the "Shares" are? Or have they been "scattered" across the other two PC's (what System are they)? You also don't say how the Intranet/Network (your 3 pc's plus any given Customer) is set up. Router? Network Hub? Wireless? Server acting as Router (2+ NICs, one to Internet Shared + Hubs)? This may make a difference in how you restrict/permit the Shares. It may be possible to do all of this in the Router (I think?). If a Router, read the manual on how to set it up. You must be an Administrator on the PC's having the Shared Folders and be able to sign on to them to set up the Permissions correctly. When you click on the "Sharing" tab, there will be a box that says "Permissions"; that's where they are set. If you remove the "Everyone, be sure to add "Administrators" group before you do (and set all Permissions checked). Then add and apply the SPECIFIC users (the ones allowed to share across the 3 PC's) to the Shares and their permissions. Also, disable the "Guest" account if not needed. These steps need to be taken on all PC's having "Shares". READ, READ, READ the MS Help FIRST to make sure you understand what you're doing. Everything you need to know (the basics) is in there. If you don't have Administrator Rights, then you are not allowed to make these changes. These rights must be granted by your Administrator. If that's you, then you should already have these rights. HTH -
Best option as above (gets them all; also burn to CD/DVD then input to PC). Only necessary once (or more times for/on each Patch Tuesday). Alternate option (you only get what's needed for the PC in question, however) is MBSA (Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer) from MS. Requires Intranet Connections (using e.g. the Server w/MBSA). Dunno about a "push" of the fixes (haven't tried that). Necessary for each PC in question each time (except fixes already downloaded stay on the Server PC). Tool is more useful in a Corporate environment. Guess it depends on your need/intent (as far as you stated in paragraph one). Best bet for you is probably Autopatcher.

There's a new one going around... Just seen it in the recent past on MySpace. Do a Google on "sg10scanner" and you'll see all kinds of wonderful stuff; that is, if you pop-up is wanting you to "scan for viruses" (that's the one I got). I put a block on it/them in my IExplorer, updated my Spybot (Immunize/Load HOSTS). Hopefully this will halt this nonsense.

No. Each edition of Windows XP(Home/Pro)/MCE/TabletPC has a separate algorithm. Retail/OEM/(etc.) complicates it even more. Your key will only work on MCE2005. Try ringing MS, tell them your problem, and probably for a nominal fee, will send you a replacement CD-set (2 with MCE/Tablet, variations of XP-Pro).

How I secure folder in workgroup?
submix8c replied to elcinhuseyn's topic in Networks and the Internet
What is the folder's name? If XP, then Sharing creates a folder named "Shared Folders" for your local intranet. Is that the one? If not, even so, any Shares must remove "Everyone" as "Read" Permissions and explicitly specify users/groups for what-to and what-not-to share (or "see"). -
If you have clean-installed the Win98, you probably need some Updates. Go to the "Complete List of Hotfixes"... at least one of them is probably necessary. Also, these will be English, but the necessary fix(es) may be language-neutral. HTH

As stated, Disk Management is a TREE entry under Computer Management (kind of an Explorer-type view). Nothing confusing about it. You will also see an entry (on the left-side) showing the Shares and their names. P.S. - Computer Management shows dang near everything in it's display.
-
The "Folders" that you share is what I'm talking about. When you right-click on a folder that is Shared (that the files and other sub-folders are in) you'll see the Permissions that are set. There's a tab on right-click for the given folder "Sharing and Security" when you F8/SafeMode as an Administrator. You keep referring to a given File; the Share permissions are via a Folder for all files/folders below it (e.g. as in "Shared Documents"). The Permissions are set per-user (as defined in each PC) and any User on PC-A that needs more-than-read-only Permissions must be defined also on PC-B (where the Share is located). User-A uses PC-A User-B uses PC-B (where share is) User-A is DEFINED on PC-B (where the Share is) User-A Permissions for the Share (on PC-B) is "all" (or whatever) Now User-A can Update files on PC-B Defaults via Networking Wizard are Read-Only... This can be changed under Normal sign-on for any NT-type operating system OTHER than XP-Home, which will only show the tab under Safe Mode (for an Administrator). HTH

Sharing permissions. Can be set as Administrator under Safe Mode (only way with Home Edition). If this is the only factor involved; you don't say how you "set up" Sharing on the reloaded PC...

5X the Ram and machine still slow :realmad:
submix8c replied to Javalicious's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Agree with thydreamwalker. Go with the "lowest" default (F6-Bios) and then the Setup (F-7). Your BIOS appears to allow for "overrides", so ensure that you "force" the RAM (one at a time) to PC100 in the BIOS. I have a "newer" Soyo (a Duron) that had heartburn with mix-and-match (2x256mb, 1-100mhz and 1-133mhz) and had to put first the 133, force it to 100, then put in the 100. Dunno if this may cause some kind of "power draw" or not (?), but seems unlikely. Try "forcing" it/them to "100". As stated before, some MoBo's just don't like some RAM sticks and, worse, sometimes mis-reports the actual size. Also, the slot they are placed in (depending on size) is a very important factor, i.e. usually (but not always) the lowest size is placed in the first slot. I doubt that the on-board hardware is the problem; it appears that there is a problem with the RAM or RAM Cache (L1/L2). Please note that in the case of RAM, some PC100 are for "newer" boards (post-1999?) and others for "older" (1999 and older?). Had this problem (as did a brother) in an older board. It flat refused to "like" it and had to exchange it. And some boards have the same problem accepting PC133. A final note on the "discrepancy" in the RAM speed (re. SiSoft/Everest) - believe it or not, some RAM manufacturers "program" PC133 to PC100 (yes, it can be done), and these are usually the "newer" style. They just "down-clock" them for sale (kind of like Intel did when testing their CPU's for sale). addendum to herbalist' post - re. the HDD - meaning if the Device Manager says you are using BusMasterIDE drivers (the SIS ones) and the HDD's indicate they are using UDMA, then the HDD's are good for the go.edit - Ulp! re. Power Supply / CPU Voltages - the BIOS indicates what is going on Pre-boot; Post-boot (in Windows/SiSoft/Everest) may actually show something different (lower) due to "usage" (I "think"?). Perhaps (as thydreamwalker states) the Power Supply just ain't up-to-snuff (could be failing). HTH -
Have you looked closely at nLite? The answer is yes, yes, yes... Just get nLite, follow the instructions given, and voila! Integrated CD Install...

FWIW, any musicians (or others) interested in having a copy/performing any of them, just PM me and I'll get it/them to you. I would really hate to see these songs languish in the dust... Moderators may move this to General Discussion if need be.

need help writing a batch file
submix8c replied to itgremlin's topic in Programming (C++, Delphi, VB/VBS, CMD/batch, etc.)
Uh, try opening a Command Prompt and running "xcopy /?"... No offense, but the Help functions of programs "helps"... Also, the variable provided is only good for the profile of the logged-on User-ID (you stated multiple profiles). The batch CMD file would have to get all user-id's from Documents And Settings as-you-go to get it copied in one shot... edit - I see a couple of smart lurkers in here - they may be able to provide you with an exact CMD file. -
No clue as to whether this would work... Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. There is a method of manually "moving" a profile's "stuff" under a new profile, but I can't dis-member it (fixed a young lad's PC once). It may have something to do with the Internal ID's (e.g. Identities) given to a given User-ID that "locks" the info (NTUSER.DAT). DOH! Look here - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151 However, since you already "fiddled", I don't know if this would work... Google on "transfer user-profile XP" (sans quotes) for a wealth of info.
