  1. Works on 32-bit. Must be a difference in the DLL's... (no help, obviously, but an FYI.)
  2. It might have adware/trojans/virii on it eating the CPU cycles and Memory. Go cruise around the Malware Prevention forum for some good cleaning tips. (Even if you Installed Fresh, you connected directly to the WWW, hence "Doors Opened"). I have a 233mhz P-II with 256mb RAM and it screams (among other better PC's w/Win98SE and even XP...), so the specs can't be the problem. Oh, and BTW, you might need the Drivers from/for the SIS chips to get anything out of it, e.g. running the HDD in Real Mode with default MS drivers. I think I might have had the same problem with a SIS-based MoBo... Here's the Manual - http://www.motherboards.org/files/manuals/89/741lmrt-14.zip Here's the BIOS, VGA/LAN "patches" (scroll down a little) - http://pcchipsusa.com/support-pcchips-bios.asp Here's the remainder of the drivers (look for the MoBo)- http://pcchipsusa.com/support-driver.asp HTH
  3. I repeat... a download manager. Do what Charlotte said (re The Correct File) and then what I said. Trust me, it DOES work that way. It (FlashGet) will open as many connections to the MS file as allowed, downloading the file in pieces simultaneously, hence my assertion that it will take (if using default 6 connections) roughly 1/6th of the time with the side benefit of restarting the "piece" download at the interruption point if interrupted. Works every time and FAST FAST FAST, EVEN WITH DIAL-UP. FlashGet is FREE and the Install Download is ONLY 4.5mb. (sheesh...) And I also repeat, insisting that someone send you the corrupt files don't fly a kite. The point is NOT whether your Windows is legal, the point is US SENDING FILES is ILLEGAL! You have to get them yourself. So go get the complete download again... edit - Here ya go; FlashGet (LEGAL and FREE) - http://down6.flashget.com/fgf173.exe Download the above and use it. Quit depending on the built-in MS Downloader. Did you never notice how an MS Download operation slows down as time passes? Don't happen with FG...
  4. No-one is going to "send you files". Won't happen (illegal and against MSFN rules)... Read what I said above. Your download is corrupted due to a bad download. Re-download as I said above (using a Download Manager) and all will be well. It will NOT take 16 hours to do again... maybe only 2-3 hours and a GOOD download at that!
  5. Also look here for more info - http://www.msfn.org/board/GUIDE-Download-E...ft-t109264.html
  6. How did your friend "fix" this? It may have a bearing on what went wrong. Mine are stored here -C:\Documents and Settings\user-id\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{numerics}\Microsoft\Outlook Express where user-id is my Windows Logon-ID and numerics is a special folder for my OE signon. In my case, I created a different OE signon rather than using the "default" (Main Identity), so there are two "special folders". So one might wonder if the OE sign-on they are using is different than the original. Also, their Address Book would be stored here - C:\Documents and Settings\user-id\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book with a filename OESignon.wab Normally, when a Compress is done, the originals are copied to ".bak" (for MS "insurance"), the Compress occurs, then the ".bak" files are sent to the Recycle Bin. I just did a Compress on mine and that's what happened. I won't swera to this, but I think an "Import" is unnecessary (been a while since I fiddled with this). All that needed to be done was ---- (do not be signed into OE except where noted) 1 - Copy all good files to another "safe" folder(s) (including the Address Book/s) 2 - Uninstall Outlook Express (including the Address Book) then re-install 3 - go into OE and re-create the original OESignon 4 - While in OESignon, re-create all folders in question 5 - exit OE and overlay the newly created files with the good files (not the ".bak", unless these are the good origninals; should be renamed to ".dbx" after deleting the ".dbx") including AddressBook 6 - go back into OE and all should be well. How the ".bak" files got there is beyond me, unless the Compress failed for some reason. I suggest copying all possible folders (i.e. files ".dbx", ".bak", and ".wab") to "safe folders" (real folders) before proceeding to ensure no data loss (step #1). HTH
  7. http://www.livecdlist.com/ Be aware that you will 1 - need to know where to find what you want to save 2 - need somewhere other than the problem HDD to save to (usb stick?) A live-cd may even help you in getting yourself up and running again, if you know what you are doing/looking for. Also, be aware that if you have a pirated key on the PC in question, you may be "locked out" by an update from MS... And, FWIW, a "reinstall over top" may/may-not cure your problem.
  8. Read here... http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?act=fi...&pid=819496 Dial-up and using MS "download" is not very effective (error-prone) for any large files. Besides, using the shown suggestion is much faster... (BTW, Free FlashGet is small; use the "previous" version, not the "new" one.)
  9. FYI - certain VIA chipsets (just as with certain Intel) have drivers that pretty much do the same thing. The patches above would be for IF you don't want the "certain chipset" drivers OR if you have "other than". Also note that the provided patches (above) appear to work fine (within specified conditions)... ...AND that the VIA drivers (Mini Port Driver) kind of works like XP. In other words, before the VIA driver (using MSFN fix), I had booted to HDD-2/PART-1 (SecCtlr) with HDD-0and1 (PriCtlr) set as "none" and they weren't seen, and after the VIA they were picked up regardless (via the VIA controller, ignoring the BIOS setting). For fun, I disabled the Primary Controller (PriCtlr) and they "disappeared" again. Useful info for "ignoring" certain HDD's? Oh, and discovered that older Compaq/HP POS Phoenix BIOS does some kind of wierd "bit-shift" for larger HDD's, so a "clone" of an HDD in PC-A and the "cloned" put in another may not work. You have to literally define/format the partitions in the POS then "copy" the contents of the original. Maybe just cloning the partition will work; dunno. Went nutz helping my brother on this problem - 80GB moved from POS Compaq to older HP POS (both recognized, but HP would not boot - black screen+cursor). Gave up and re-installed on the HP (w/80GB). May have been the diff between chipsets (VIA vs. Intel)? Fair warning... Ennyhoo, my $.02. (Went nutz on this for a while after installing "new" 250GB.) Happy camper now! edit - and don't forget to "patch" for GT-1gb RAM...
  10. Won't swear to this (don't have Vista), but vLite (I think) will also allow this... Browse in the vLite section for a how-to. Here is a reference to my assertion (see last post) - http://www.msfn.org/board/Vista-in-5-CDs-c...ble-t94928.html
  11. DOS doesn't fly... doesn't read/write/"see" NTFS. You need an NTFS-type bootable (2k and up). Look around the forum for how-to on creating an XP Bootable USB Install. I think there's one in the Unattended section... Create that one and install directly from the USB.
  12. Yes... MSDN but you have to apply/pay(?). Perhaps you can find a Trial one for download in the "Free" System Builder (OEM)? signup (haven't looked) that can be modded. Don't ask how because - 1 - I don't know and 2 - it may be (and probably is) illegal. Uhhh, your siggy says Vista but your OS says XP (???). If you already have Vista, why are you asking?
  13. FYI - pre-SP2 cd's have a different set of OEMBIOS.xxx, PIDGEN, DPCDLL, and SETUPP.INI files that preclude using the old keys. You have to manually "swap" the originals into the "slipstreamed" install. (At least this is what I've read somewhere and can't remember specifically which; maybe just PIDGEN and DPCDLL, since the other items are not replaced(?).). This was intentionally done by MS to prevent pirating (note - if the keys are pirated, they will fail anyway when going to MS Update/validation). Corrections anyone?
  14. Yes (read above posts)... There is also another software (other than CCleaner) called "Index.dat Analyzer" that finds stuff CCleaner does not (specifically redirect entries). I use both...
  15. SATA HDD? Need drivers loaded to access it (?)... Couldn't say about the CD-ROM problem... BTW, you didn't say what is on the USB stick (OS you are booting...).
  16. Bad cable, or jumpers set incorrectly...
  17. Did you follow MDGx' instructions? I'm not sure what could have gone wrong... details?
  18. @TheStarman - Excellent info on your pages! Also found this - http://www.goodells.net/multiboot/index.htm which acknowledges and links to your work. Between you and them (among others), I have finally figured out how to transfer my old PC to my new PC ( multi-booting, of course ). Still a work-in-progress, but well on the way now, with your help! And Welcome to the Fray!!!!
  19. Uh, Nerwin, it takes time, patience, and a mess of chord books of your favorite bands to learn guitar. Don't give up and play till your fingertips hurt (I did...). It'll come to you naturally later. Go here - www.myspace.com/andjustus4all to listen to me pickin' on a bass. Heck, I lost the tip of my index finger and still have occasion to pick a little (3-finger of course...). Trust me, when you get in a "mood", the guitar takes you to another realm, kinda like programming does for many. Besides, it'd be a shame to let a good git-fiddle go to waste!
  20. FWIW, if it's indeed the PSU (Power Supply) fan (noise?) then you don't need to get a new PSU, just carefully remove and open the PSU and replace the fan with an equivalent. Probably just the fan going out and the PSU getting hot. Warning! If the PSU is aleady on the way out due to over-heating, you'll probably have to replace it anyway. Same thing happened to my brother (replace fan ok, but later went out since two caps were already toasted...). Worth a shot to save money...
  21. Stupid comment/suggestion - Brother trying to install XP on older HP Pavilion after putting in new HDD on Primary as Master (CD-ROM already on Secondary). Would not boot to CD and insisted on booting to HDD. After two days of over-the-phone troubleshooting (woohoo!), he noted that the CD-ROM jumper was set to Cable Select instead of Master. Stupid HP! (notice that he did not change anything else but HDD...). Changed the jumper and BAM! Case closed! Soooo, check the Master/Slave settings on the devices as well as the BIOS boot order.
  22. What file are you having a problem with? WIN386.SWP will always be "locked" on a running system, and must not be "unlocked". All others will be "unlocked" unless "opened" by an application (the SWP file is always opened whether you like it or not). Please be more specific as to what needs "unlocked" and why you need to (copying the main HDD in its entirety will halt at the WIN386.SWP).
  23. If you'd have went to the website (part of the download link in question) - http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ you'll see that it's only for 2K,XP,2K3,Vista... ( question would have been answered without making a new topic ) Anyone know what OP means about a "locked file" in Win98/98SE? Files are usually "locked" when in-use (right/wrong?)...
  24. Uhhh, yep! Putting together another PC to flip to primary (and putting primary to secondary) is a pain! Lots of proggies/utilities/etc. to go back through, find the original install and keys, then fixing it up to my liking is STILL not completed! Stupid monitor just blinks at me as if to say "turn me on and finish, already!". Besides, the transferral of data (praise be that I store everything usually on a secondary HDD and CD's/DVD's).
  25. Short list sounds good. I heard DeepBurner was ok (buggy last version I tried). ImgBurn is kind of stand-alone. Also works ok (not a lot of wonderful features but small footprint). Nero still needs a key - the Lite thing is just to strip it down to the basics (as seen on MSFN)...
