Connecting a Windows 98 and Windows 7 through a network

"NetBIOS over TCP/IP" on the given adapter's TCP/IP Properties - mine's grayed out (?) but checked (on W98SE in VirtPC). -
Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE

You CPUID's HWMonitor? v1.17 was suggested, but I'm betting that v1.19 (latest) will work. It's a "standalone" program (download the ZIP and decompress) - try it.(note - not going to reboot for the test - just try it...). -

@loblo - my apologies - obviously I was wrong about sensors under the (eg) CPU? edit - Using Motherboard Monitor 5 on my PC-Chips - it has Case and CPU Temps showing - the BIOS also shows these (and additionally System Temp). edit2 - looks like it depends on the hardware - newer CPU's apparently built in. (Older need the MoBo sensor.) edit3 - CPUID HW Monitor Supported HW (v1.19) edit4 - odd... Case+CPU+System all display (as Temp0+1+2), the HDD's display, but the nVidia GeForce MX400 doesn't show (even though supposed to support nVidia) P.S. and this is on 2K3, NOT W98, so pay attention to versions (maybe?)... edit 4 - RivaTuner (latest not for W98 according to site - v2.24c) edit 5 - RivaTuner v2.24 nLite Add-On (appears to be that version) edit 6 - RivaTuner Tutorial Nope, Monitoring but no Temps - This The Hardware must support it regardless (sensors)! -
No, at least 98SE doesn't and I don't believe any of them ever did. edit - could check W95, but not sure if yes/no... P.S. thx for Folder Size link - got it.

my newer pc build is locking up or freezing and not sure why

Something not mentioned... HEAT! Keep the PC clean, especially the fans (all of them). -
I tend to agree, but if you follow the procedures you "kind of" have an XP that you can "turn on" Server functions "as you learn". Fair warning! I'm not so certain about "plugging in" the System Restore function - I did, but turned it back "off" once I got used to the ins/outs of 2K3 Recovery (it could be dangerous if you actually use Server functions then use it).Work with the XP a bit before going the 2K3 route - my $.02. edit - And I kind of "jumped" into 2K3 before familiar with either. Actually (in my case) made using XP a cakewalk. Consider 2K3 a "super XP Pro"... P.S. Enterprise? WOOHOO!!! You got a bargain! edit2 - oops! One big disadvantage (but not really) - no Fast User Switching and no Welcome screen. Works like W2K - a single user Sign In Window.

Server 2K3 - Mainstream - 7/13/2010 / Extended - 7/14/2015 XP - Mainstream - 4/14/2009 / Extended - 8/4/2014 As a "general rule" (depending on the Vendor) if it runs on XP, it'll run on 2K3. Some vendors "block" the install if it's a Server to get you to purchase a separate product (e.g. O&O Defrag - Pro and Server Editions). Running both in addition to 98SE (multiboot).

DUH (comment to self - slaps forehead...)! I do that with my Web Server. Router has IP->MAC so the IP is always the same assigned. Chances are you may be able to do that with yours router. I don't have Wireless, so one might 'assume" this can be done for that too (I'm "wired"...).edit - also note the quoted text (prev post) seems to indicate that it's been done(?).

Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE
submix8c replied to galahs's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Yes, off-topic. You should have started your own/another one.You can't get CPU unless the MoBo supports it. Never heard of a GPU or HDD. Any/all have to have "temperature sensors" to work. Installing such a program is useless without sensors. Better check your MoBo. (one of mine has them... CPU and Case Temperatures - sensors on MoBo). -

@frogman - GOOD GLORY!!!! Are you trying to increase your post count? Use the "EDIT" tab, PLEASE!!!! -
AFAIK (IF the same as XP/2K3) the Updates first come to SoftwareDistribution Folder, are -UNPACKED- to a SubFolder (now you DON'T have the Original EXE), and the UPDATE program is run. Then, the Update places the OLD files into another subfolder in the Windows directory for the purpose of "rollback". So... you need the ORIGINAL EXE/MSP/(whatever) from MS. AutoPatcherDOTcom may be expedient, but bear in mind they use their OWN "download" routines and the Dates of the files are the CURRENT date of Download, so don't depend on "sorting" them by Date. USUALLY (but not always), the KB# will help, but don't depend on that. ...and I note that there's no "Vista Update List" topic (unless I missed it?)... so feel free to create one for both x86 and x64 (if there truly isn't one). edit - read this (ARGGG! RyanVM - "Last edited by trippinferret on Mon Nov 21, 2011 6:53 pm") edit2 - found this. You can use a Downloader if you wish to retain the original Date (e.g. FlashGet) by CANCELING when download screen pops up then using the "direct link" given (right-click, "Download using FlashGet") or just save the Link and use a "wget" command inside a CMD file (much like -X- does with XP post-SP3).

Hmmm... this will not "fix" them but will (maybe) help identify them (?) - IsoBuster? (and NOT the "contents" Compressed files, just the BASIC filenames).

OK... vLite was never actually intended for Win7, it was for Vista. It just so happened that Win7-RTM worked. With the advent of SP1, some things "changed" and it no longer functioned. Don't bother to ask for an "update" to vLite as Nuhi no longer updates it and never will... Period! (Nuhi has "moved on" to a permanent job elsewhere and does not respond to emails/messaging.) I have seen some references to what's called RT7-Lite which may/may-not work(?). HTH and Good luck!

Does this help? Apparently there are a couple of "tricks" to it... Edit - too late to do like above. You already wiped your registry. There are some "values" within the PST, etc. that directly correlate to the original and you "created" a new one... ...and this also implies COPY and NOT Import... Where does your eMail come from? If from e.g. Gmail there's a way to "delete after download" from their server. I use that in conjunction with older Outlook Express...

Where to find a updated list for XP Norway?
submix8c replied to tigern6000's topic in User Contributed Update Lists
Hmmm. can't seem to find one... BUT perhaps Belarc Advisor may help? Not sure of the Language Support... Edit - Hmmm... if you go to -X- website, you can get the English List and (maybe) follow the Links given and change the Language. You would still have to double-check that all work and all Updates completed. -
?The usual "Download the Full EXE" files from MS??? Sorry, don't understand the question...Also, you can afterward vLite it??? edit - and keep it up-to-date until the bitter end on Patch Tuesday, checking the Add/RemovePgms+ShowAll to make sure you have them all. ...and AutoPatcherDOTcom (so far) still keeps the Vista x86 post-SP2 list (relatively) up-to-date (currently as-of April 10, 2012). Just checked with the APUP program. (NOTE: not totally dependable - sometimes not always correct.)

? The one from the Manufacturer (Seagate) is a good starting place. Also, HDTune(?) as a Freeware alternative. How about that Event Viewer message? Get it yet? -
How to Slipstream Directly (no nLite involved). Unfortunately, it suggests using Commercial tools. There is, however, an alternative... To extract the Boot Image, you can use (e.g.) Bart's Boot Image Extractor. To create an ISO Image you can use Imgburn to first create the ISO (Step#1) then Burn that created image to CD (Step#2). Also note that the Burn Speed should be LOWERED to about 8x (in spite of the article in the first link). A side note - Home is definitely upgradeable to Pro if it is NOT an OEM XP Pro. OEM CD's are strictly made to install on a CLEAN HDD, and are not able to Upgrade a preexisting installation (certain files/folders are usually missing). Please post the contents of your SETUPP.INI file (located in the CD's I386 folder) to determine if this is OEM (can't upgrade), Retail, or Upgrade. edit - and maybe if it has string "VOL" in it, it may not be(? don't remember). A PDF file Licensing "Primer" edit2 - DOH! Also can't exactly remember, BUT to Upgrade, it should be run from XP Home, and not "booted" from (WINNT32.EXE vs WINNT.EXE)... You should have a selection that says "Upgrade (Recommended)". edit3 - Upgrade Paths

Should we assume Windows 7 (based on Search on your member name)? Read this. Maybe an older version of Outlook?Look here. Google is also your friend. HTH (do try Google and give whatever you find a shot - you didn't even say what "you don't like") (addendum - haven't installed Win7 yet so can give an "opinion") edit - Thunderbird speed-up tips.

Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer after Reboot... They don't disappear until you "clear" them, so the Event(s) are still logged. -
Why Windows Vista (SP1+) is Better Than Windows 7
submix8c replied to UltimateSilence's topic in Windows Vista
An FYI (and as an opinion only) - Vista, 2K8, and Win7(?) were the last to have x86 versions. 2K8-R2 and anything newer tends toward x64 apparently due to marketing of new hardware. They just don't want to bother anymore (IMHO). XP was lucky to get an SP3. -

Have you looked here for the User Guide? You have a Firewall installed and need to change the "Rules" for your internal TCP/IP address range to allow communications (I usually set "Allow Any" between Local PC's). This is usually standard for any good 3d party firewall. edit - Just to mention, I use Symantec, so settings screen/methods differ.

ARG! Pushed a wrong key and lost my "reply". re - "older hardware" - PC Recycler in my city gives $5/Tower and $3/lb-Boards. They get from offices and govt due to upgrades. Also resell "best" parts after stripping (DDR, Better/Best AGP/PCI, PATA Peripherals, etc) for real cheap. Catch them when a shipment comes in and "make an offer they can't refuse" (older Towers). They don't even keep non-Dual Core PC's. (They also do PC Repair, BTW) For "hoarders", a great place to unload your "too old" or "don't want anymore".

Meaning... Slip the SP3 to it "manually" instead of using nLite for you purposes (nLite "alters" certain INF files.)Note - Never tried your scenario before, so unsure if this would work if you "slipped" other "fixes" in. You might want to check "Last Session.INI" (hopefully on the nLited CD) for what you did.
