  1. First off , welcome to the world of web-development. Second, you'll find the info you're looking for in this thread which is located 3 down from yours actually. You can find a whole mess of editing software at http://www.webdevelopersjournal.com/softwa...ml_editors.html You can also download frontpage express (a good starter version) for free from http://sssd.k12.ar.us/departments/dts/training/fp.htm
  2. I would have to disagree actually... Notice the Virus definition date and the listed copyright date. I'd say it works fine with the updates despite being released in 98 (definately pre-2000). The abouts from two of my systems shown to prove it's not "Because of norton systemworks" only. This desktop (as listed in sig) [bundled version with Norton SystemWorks v2.0] My Laptop (Toshiba A15-S157) [standalone version of NAV v5]
  3. The new but unknown device might be an extention of your systems mainboard. Have you tried installing your mainboards drivers? Perhaps made by intel or ViA? My best guess is that this unknown device is most likely your "Enhanced USB 2.0" support. Being as you probably don't have the drivers it will end up asking for it constantly unless you lead it through the driver install screen. Then let it finally say 'unknown device' and then select 'ok'. It would then stop asking every bootup. As for norton 2004, I would avoid any version 2000 and beyond like the plague and consider a different scanner. The newer versions are as painless as an extended migrane without medication. If you can get your hands on a different scanner such as 'McAffee', 'AVG' (free), one from 'TrendMicro', or an older version of 'Norton Antivirus' (pre-dating 2000) you'll be in much better shape.
  4. Thanks for the info. I am actually using those very drivers Kertel. The WDM ones I never used as they wouldn't work to begin with (and I try to avoid WDM drivers whenever possible). Only tried them once as a last-ditch effort to get blaster-support. It's a pity the blaster functions don't work on yamaha cards. Especially since my laptop has full blaster support despite no resources set for the such. That really burned me some. Would you happen to know of any pci sound cards for win98 that do support blaster configs with dos alongside other soundcards? My integrated sound (Realtek 885) sound doesn't work with any dos at all so I can't use the built in sound as a secondary. Additionally, thank you Eck for the direction to that site. I'll try checking and\or posting there as well.
  5. Not sure if it were best to put this here or the hardware hangout. However, it seemed more OS oriented. Is there anyone who own a YMF-724F (or close?) that have experienced this issue (mentioned below) and know how to deal with it? I've scoured the net and found nothing regarding this issue and am at a loss here. I'm sure this post sounds a bit unorganized but I've been fiddling with this issue for the last 12 hours nonstop and am very tired and well.. generally aggrivated over the whole thing. This is an issue regarding the play of soundeffects in DOS games and even getting any sound to work in DOS as well. The card otherwise functions normally with non-dos games. On to the issue: Just earlier today, I had wanted to play a couple old-ish games "MechWarrior 2" & "Heretic" and had installed them. However, during the setup.. I had been reminded of something that had aggrivated me for much of the time I've had this sound card (Yamaha YMF-724F). Before I moved it into this system, my old computer used to have 2 sound cards due to my YMF-724 not supporting any 'soundblaster' settings. Midi playback was always perfect and the other card did the Sound Effects. I moved it into this current system (listed in sig) a while ago and thought nothing of it as I'd completely forgotten about the 'problem' with soundblaster emulation. This new pc also doesn't have any ISA slots either so I can't transfer the other card into this one. Now the lack of blaster emulation comes back to haunt me... I tried and tried. Hand modified the resource settings, put the card in different pci slots, even attempted to use yamaha's own DOS drivers. I get nothing with it as it even reports no 'soundblaster' found at address 0x220. Being as that is the only address I have my blaster environment set to for it, I considered it odd. So now, back in windows, I had a couple other DOS games that could autodetect the hardware. Midi was always found flawlessly, no hitches whatsoever. Attempting to hand configure or have it autodetect the sound effect card (the yamaha) always produced "No digital hardware found". If I enabled the build in AC'97 audio, it would still report the same error "No digitial hardware found'. Games that didn't detect the card and just accepted the card settings you entered would load, play the Midi music (which works) but there would be no sound at all other than that. Alas, I am aware of emulators such as DOS-BOX and the like but there is a game which is DOS and have been meaning to play online on Kali just recently which was 'MechWarrior 2'. However, if I have no sound, there is zero interest in even trying the game again because there is no point in being deaf in the middle of combat. Can't hear what's around you, you'r as good as dead. Can't hear the signal indicating a launched salvo of missiles locked onto you? You're pretty much toast as you don't know and cannot attempt to avoid them.
  6. I don't have any NT-Based programs that I know of which call those API's so am Unable to test the functionality. However, I have downloaded and installed the patch. Confirmed that the exports were installed using ExeScope... So far so good. System still stable and no problems have cropped up. Whoever this anonymous person is, I would like to thank them for extending support of the 9X Kernel. It is a great thing to be able to add additional API support to the 9X kernel and would love to see additional extentions in the future. Anyone who continues to support 9X have my highest regards. Thank you everyone and many many thanks to the anonymous submitter.
  7. I had the very same problem with USB mice as well including Legacy PS\2Emulation (USB). The problem seems to lie in the fact that USB mice are typically software driven and controlled. PS\2 Mice are done by the hardware and thus can still move even during a system lockup. That might be the reason why you are noticing the mouse considerably hang during moments of heavy activity. Additionally, even if the mouse were USB2, you would still notice the hangups with your mouse during moments of heavy activity. From my experiences, USB has always taken a backseat during seriously heavy loads unless if it's a USB device causing the load, then the rest of the USB devices take a backseat.. For your IRQ being enabled for the PS\2 mouse, I wouldn't see any wrong there be in doing so. Isn't IRQ12 a restricted IRQ therefor dedicated to the mouse only? Also, PS\2 Rate? I believe there is a registry tweak to push a PS\2 mouse refresh rate too 200 per second. If you don't want to ditch your USB mouse either, USB-PS\2 adaptors are cheap and most often come with todays USB mice.
  8. I would go for the Soundblaster as well. To echo what has alreayd been said, using it will take off the load from the System CPU thus helping performace. Additional Bonuses: - It will be more compatible with older games. - Most OnBoard chips use only a headphone grade amplifier. Your soundblaster most likely has a better amplifier built in thus allowing you to get away with using passive (non-amplified) speakers as if they were powered speakers. - If you are a MIDI fanatic, MIDI playback will be SO much better.
  9. You're camera may well be a USB1 device. However, I don't believe any mice would ever need the throughput allowed through USB2. A mouse doesn't even come close to using the amount of bandwidth a USB2 device would use. A mouse doesn't even come close to using half the bandwidth provided by the USB1 standard even. I wouldn't even worry about what standard your mouse falls under Kartel. The camera on the other hand... =\
  10. Sorry , I see what you meant by the marquee problem between IE and Firefox (Sleep deprevation caused me to overlook it). Best way to get them to both work equally it seems is through a JavaScript marquee solution. Ok, to fix the problem with overlapping cells as it seems, you need to set a width size for the cell housing your 'recommended links' table. Normally, what you had was <TR vAlign=top><!-- row 1 --> <TD> <DIV align=left> <TABLE border=1 borderColor=#ffcccc cellPadding=10 cellSpacing=0 width="100%"> <TBODY> <TR vAlign=top> <TD> Setting the last <TD> to <td width=200> fixes your problem. IE tends to enjoy giving as much room as possible to the rightmost cells and then squashing the leftmost cells in the process when an absolute size is not set.
  11. Change the marquee behaviour from 'slide' to 'alternate' to get it to switch directions. I'll look inot your table problem. Seems to be due to how IE6 (judging from your screenshot) is handling CSS. I'm seeing that you hgave NESTED <body> tags in the main page which can cause alot of rendering problems. <body> <body onLoad="rollIn()"> <body bgcolor="#790000"> Would best be <body onLoad=rollIn(); bgcolor=#790000> I'll edit as I review the source code of the pages.
  12. If I read correctly, you are asking for a way to send the server time to the client and then update that without refreshing? I have provided a modified solution from my Chat Script. <html><head><script> //Written by Chozo4 (http://mechresource.myvnc.com) //Modified from 'Chochat Chat Script' //for selfupdating output of servertime in PHP $t=[<?=@date("G,i,s")?>]; function timesync () { $i=[24,60,60]; $t[2]++; $time=''; for ($x=2;$x>=0;$x--) { if ($t[$x]>=$i[$x]) {$t[$x]=0;$t[$x-1]+=1;} $time=(($x>0)?':':'')+(($t[$x]<10)?'0':'')+$t[$x]+$time; } time.value=$time; }</script></head> <body onload=setInterval("timesync()",1000);><input name=time type=text value=' '></body> </html> The code above is saved to a file such as 'time.php' to see it's effect. It can be used in other languages too as long as you output the time in the form of an array which javascript can understand. The line: $t=[<?=@date("G,i,s")?>]; would actually output: $t=[2,16,33]; If the output is matched regardless of the language the servertime is being output through, the script will function as expected. edit in: Just to note: you might have to make a couple edits to support a 12-hour time format as this clock was setup mainly for a 24-hour timespan.
  13. Have you tried enclosing the array called in the double-quotes with french braces? Such as {$thread[id]} for example? From what I've experienced, double-quotes statements don't like calling array calls and instead call '$thread' and append '[id]' as plain text. Additional note: Should enclose string variables in array brackets with single quotes. Notices will often popup saying that it will assume the string as a key instead. Using $thread['id'] will actually shut it up about it. I have zero SQL experience myself as any databases I use are self-made\auto-maintained flat file databases. Only trying to do what i can... despite how little it is. EDIT IN: Second thought - for the time being, have you tried deleting each entry individually rather than in multiples in one call? You claim it won't delete multiples so perhaps singles would be an effective workaround for now.
  14. To start out, you can download or somehow obtain a WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) editor such as frontpage or an open source editor on the net. This can get you started on making a web page. Fiddle around with it for a while, then switch it into the HTML view of what has been generated. You can learn by flipping back and forth to see what you have done using the editor. You can alternatively make changes yourself then flipping over to see what the changes have done to its appearance. As for your advertising and affilliates you want to add to a site, it would be best to not add them unless you really need some sort of revenue. Loads of advertising + newbie page (no offense to any work you have done) tends to drive poeple away. Advertising can also detract from the appearance of your site quite heavily unless you make the site in such a way to blend them in as to appear as part of your pages design.
  15. oddly, have you tried putting something like cardboard under the removed keyboard to insulate the metallic bottom from the rest of the laptop? Test it out if it works that way then, if so... you might have a short in the keyboard itself but it might still be fully functional. It would stop working then due to conducting with some other parts in the laptop. Did work on an IBM laptop that got 'wet' in the keyboard as well. Somehow it would stop working when any metallic contact had been made to certain areas of the keyboard un the underside. Using pakaging tape to insulate the whole bottom fixed the problem. Do note that the repair was done 1 month after the incident so it was most definately dry at the time.
  16. When you bought your CPU off ebay, did you receive it in antistatic baggage at the very least? Also, did you confirm that your mainboard supports the CPU that your trying to use?
  17. Just a thought, if this is only affecting the Windows Version of Quicktime... ...perhaps apple had been payed off by microsoft to do this in an attempt to help force poeple to convert to XP?
  18. I found it funny in a really cruel sort of way. Poor kid, probably going to have nightmares of that day for the next few years. Therapist anyone?
  19. You explained that better than I could personally LLXX. When I meant default settings... I meant manufacturer\factory presets. Didn't mean user settings such as IE at 'highest' security settings with a couple other additional user-tweaks to it for example. Sounds like you don't have file&Printer sharing enabled then. If you don't have File&Printer sharing enabled and if you wish to close those ports, there is a way. By default, netBIOS is enabled in the tcp-ip protocols whenever you install any network adaptor (even with dial-up). To disable it, install IPX\SPX or NETBeui. Then unbind all components listed under your TCP-IP protocol 'bindings' tab and accept settings. It may ask if you want to bind one now. Just say no and continue. Re-open then click the 'netbios' tab. The checkbox should no-longer be gray and checked. If still checked but not gray, uncheck it, accept changes and restart. NetBIOS is now disabled and those ports (137-139) closed. Disabling netbios only has the side effect of not being able to use computer name recognition (urls such as "\\petes_pc") to connect to file&Printers shared on other pc's through file\printer sharing. Rather you would use the actual ip (such as "\\192.168.0.1") or bind network drives to letters using "net" in the command line.
  20. Nicely done! I like how you put up the profiles page of the site. Very informative about each team member while still keeping a professional appeal. *claps* Nice job, Mike
  21. Sounds about right. My mainboard (EPoX 9NDA3J) would instead end up with driver conflicts amongst the HD controllers if I enabled both SATA and IDE at the same time. Disabling SATA due to not having any solved the problem. I'm sure it would be the same case had it been SATA enabled and IDE disabled. Oddly, though, my IDE controllers come up single fifo rather than dual fifo.
  22. Most (if not all) of those alerts probably fall into one of the catagories below (which are mainly a form of ping for open ports): 1a) Is just a ping to your IP from a script-kiddie looking for open ports within an ip range which your computer happened to fall into. If you have no open ports to the outside world there is nothing to worry about. 1b) A script kiddie and/or virus looking for open ports to NetBIOS 137,138, and 139. If you have file or printer sharing enabled, then netbios has those ports open. If you have no unprotected shares available, you should be fine. I've personally done some IP scans myself out of curiosity and a bit of personal research. Turns out that netbios is usually open with un-protected shares (often the c: drive) in the open on 1 out of every 20 PC's. It's often due to unknowing users enabling file sharing while not thinking of the consequences. 2) Probably a virii looking for a pre-infected system with a specific port open to exploit. Again, if you don't have ports open that shouldn't be open, thee isn't anything to worry about. Also, make sure you have security patches in place (MSBlast and LSASS ring a bell in the NT world?) 3) ZoneAlarm screaming for attention because it's lonely. 4) A form of spy/mal/ad-ware receiving data from it's provider. note: The only ports I've noticed open on a regular basis are 21 (ftp) ,80 (http) , 137-139 (netbios). With the rare 3306 (mySql). 21 and 80 are often open to the outside world by the router for remote connecting and firmware updating. Otherwise it's a web\file server. You can use a program called "netmon" (32-bit version of netstat) to view you're currently active conections and check for any open ports you don't want open. CLose your browser(s) first before opening it to clear out any connections open due to your browser connecting to a site you're viewing. You can also use 'netstat' in the command line to view any currently open ports and active connections. Not to gloat or anything but my win98se system is in the DMZ of my router. It also has no firewalls installed and runs 24/7 as a webserver. I'm basically a fort with no walls which has yet to have any savage 'invaders' come home for lunch. I'd say windows 98 is pretty secure Of course, pop-ups are inevitable and so is spy/ad/mal-ware. No system can prevent those using default system settings. Only way to avoid them is to not wander off the reputable sites path and install software that you know do not contain any 3rd party software bundled with it. However, the old saying always stands true... "Curiosity killed the cat" (Or killed the pc).
  23. Edited in: Wow this is getting REALLY off-topic. Closely awaiting any updates regarding the 137gb limitation. I've been keeping a close eye on this topic since it started. Nothing gets me more gitty than seeing 98se/9x creep up even more on the mainstream. Fully agreed there. Personally, I've stuck with Norton v5 (year 1999?) on all my pc's. Still works like a champ and is a fairly tiny install (7mb). Also still fully supported by Symantec's Definition Updater. The interface is not 'fancy' but has all the info right there on one screen. No bouncing around between tabs or windows. Turning off bloodhound detection with auto-protect makes it as if it's not even there in the background. Old screenshot I took for someone a while back of it.
  24. Quite interesting. I'll see what other reviews there are first before attempting it. I've had a small cluster of dead pixels on my laptops screen for the last year I've had it and a small pinkie-tip sized cluster of pixels that work but are not in good shape (colours slightly off). I'm not doubting your sources at the least but would rather be cautious about it. Personally still hanging from the old saying that any extra-pressure will damage some pixels. The off-colour cluster is due to me stupidly grasping the laptop from the lid too tight while catching it before hitting the floor one time...
  25. If rapidshare provides such poor service, would it be best to not use them at all? Would seem that corrupted packs from rapidshare will bring in more complaints toward the pack than good. To note: I too highly recommend MajorGeeks. They are often the first mirror I pick if it's available for anything.
