1. I have all my important files and settings install with the CD. My UA copies all of my docs and files. Also that show the point of what a good backup is use for. My comp auto backs up my files every 12 hours to a 200GB external. When I do a UA Install I just unplug that external for the deration of the install. If I change my mind about the reinstall I just run a restore of the backup and voila, I have everything back like it was before the wipe.
2. So true. I hate that I have to see so many ads when all I pay for is the show/movie. I had to sit through about 20 ads just from the company that provides my cable. I already pay for cable so why should I have to watch ads about that company? It's not like I'm gona pay them twice just to see the show once. I feel that this is the reason that piracy is so big. When you dl a program or a movie it is rare that you see the ads. In my optinion, no one wants to see ads for a movie or program that they have already paid for. It's one thing to advertise a different product or movie. It's the reason that a democratic society works in terms of economics. But it is a completely different, and unjust, thing to advertise about the product that has already been bought.
3. The point is that I will be using this cd for my personal computer. And like many others I DO wipe my comp everytime I reinstall. I also like to leave just the OS on one partition and my profile and temps, and apps on the other, larger, partition. I've found this tends to speed the system up a little. I then also like to have my page file on it's own deicated partition which is then inturn hiden from the user, myself, as to prevent fragmentation. Also is allows to have little to no space between the system files as they are placed on the harddrive. As for the size changes iissue, the partition's that would be a set size would be the one in which the OS is installed and the one for the pagefile. The one for the programs take any left over space. I also dual boot into linux and don't want windows parition tool to wipe that drive out just because it sees that drive as master rather then slave.
4. I had an idea that I wanted to bounce of all you memebers. In many different posts I've looked at people say that the only way to pre-partition a drive with extened partitions durring an Unattened Install of Windows XP is to use a PE and partition by hand. Then you would run your UA install and have all the variables point to the partitions that you want certain things to install on. Idea: My idea, if possable, if to edit the boot image so that it loads either a custom setup.exe or a command script. I have done some reseach and found that you can use command based partitioning tools to make primary and extended partitions. So I want to have a command script run these tools and then call the winnt.exe to continue with the install of windows. Can this be done? or is it just a pipedream. Or can one create their own boot image using an old fasioned batch file menu system to call the script? Please if anyone can help or put in their two cents on this idea it would help greatly. ____________________________________________________________________ Hatefulsorrow
5. He want's to do that without winroute.
6. Try uninstalling and reinstalling IE6. As for why it's happening, your guess is as good as mine. Prolly a bad driver or Dll from the install
7. I feel the same way about the music. If I hear a song on the radio I like, I want to hear the rest of the before I go spend anyware from $5-$35 on something I might not even like. It might be different if you able to return the CD opened or not for you money back. But all these stores now state that they need a receipt and if, and when, the product is returned opened then you can only return it for another copy of the same product. I find this very wrong. It is one of the underlying reasons that I believe piracy is so big. People want to know that their money is not wasted on something that looks better, or sounds better, then it realy is. But for the sake of argument, people should also know better what they want before they just buy something. For example: No person I know would buy a car, new or used, without knowing if its the right model, price, and many other things that they want and need. But also, the information about cars is more widespread and less involved then music or software. You don't need to to anything about a car to know if you like it or not. This is not true about music or software. It's a moral choice, really.
8. If nothing else works look at my post at: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=53434&hl= I had this problem and my issue was different then anything I've seen. I also slipstreamed SP2 into a WinXPPro Sp1 OEM cd and it hung at T-39. If you need some reference download the INF on that page and open it. You'll see beter then any words can explain. Good luck to you.
9. If you don't have the Microsoft Deployment Tools software, get it. Look into the winnt.sif. There are many different options and settings for users and groups. I may be wrong about it helping you with your problem but it's at least a place to start. Cheers Hatefulsorrow
10. I beleave it changes the setting for all the users on that computer. But I could be wrong.
11. MioKawaii, Would you be willing to lend me some links or helpful information of the subject of INF's? I would love to learn to do what you have done here. Please E-Mail or PM me if you could.
12. Ok you said that your user's are "Global"? You need to make them local. Global users are for roaming profiles and need to have a security policy taken from a server to work. Because you are setting up the server and not setting up a client the group needs to be local. You can then change the permissions for that user to allow for remote access if needed. Try that and get back to me.
13. @At0mic Thanks for the info. I wasn't not aware that anything pre-XP could support HT. That's a real helpper. Thanks again
14. Good luck Sorry I couldnt be of more help
15. Keyboard Layout Specifies the type of keyboard layout to install during text-mode Setup.{/B] Syntax = layout_description Value layout_description Example KeyboardLayout = Us Comments: If this entry does not exist, Setup detects and installs a keyboard layout. This entry must match one of the right-hand strings (in quotation marks) in the [Keyboard Layout] section of TxtSetup.sif. This is a direct quote from the Windows SP2 Deployment Tools CHM. Make sure that your sytax is correct
16. You can always do either a system restore or a windows repair. But as far as the files within the system32 directory, what do you mean by "get their attributes back?" Meaning that they have lost their system attribute or a hidden attribute or what? There is a command line command that lets you set the attributes of a file but I don't know if it works for more then one file at a time. Check out the switches. To see open a command window. And type: attrib /? The thing is that each file in the windows system32 subfolder has different attributes. So setting all of the file's to the same may cause a very serious problem. But then again it may not. No way to tell without trying. It may not be worth the hastle to do it by hand, hence the idea's of system restore or windows repair. If you use system restore you might get the virus back, so all your effort might be for not. On the other hand, if you use windows repair you have to redownload and reinstall any and all windows updates that you have gotten sence the last time you formated your harddrive. It's a toss up. Hope this helps, Hatefulsorrow
17. How about the drivers????
18. why not just set the install time to like 5 minutes ahead of now. Then you'll see what you want to.
19. Sounds like the ram to me. Also did you check to see if your firewire drivers are up to date. If the microsoft drivers aren't working try the manufactuer's (i know, poor spelling.) If the doesn't work also check to if it's a power problem with either your system or the power for the external. You stated that the problem was intermintant. Make sure the voltage is good on the converter for the external. It should be about 6, 8, or 12 volts on a multimeter. (depending on your external drive) If your in doubt about what the voltage should be check the underside of the converter and look for what voltage the out-put should be. If it's off by more then .5 volts, the power's bad. Hope this helps. If it's none of these let me know and I'll tell you anything I can think of. Good Luck
20. Acronis is what I use too. It's great. No Problems here
21. the the security policys and permissions make sure that the everyone group has the "logon locally" permission enabled. If you've already tried this then I'm not sure. I know that there is a command line command that lets you restore your computer's security policy to windows default but I can't remember it off hand. Let me know if you need it and I'll find the command again.
22. I use these /Q:A /C:"setup_wm.exe /Q:A /R:N" try them and see if it helps
23. are you using any UA Install switches? I use the one's possed from around the forum and I don't have any problems. I also have system restore turned off. Look at the unattened install section for the switches.
24. Windows XPSP2 all the way.
