  1. Wow! I don't want to hear another word from the opponents of writing Micro$o£t with currency signs. I refer them to see what the company itself is doing. Sorry for the offtopic. GL
  2. Most of the patchers report the current value and allow you to abort. In fact, I've just tested one of them for you and it left no traces after the aborted operation, neither in registry nor in filesystem. Another one operates in a similar way (this function is in the menus). But, there is always the risk that Microsoft issues newer versions of tpcpip.sys that confuse the tools. So far, as far as I know, they still work well. GL
  3. You wouldn't want that line here, read the description: This zone contains Web sites that could potentially damage your computer or data. I'd change that to reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\4" /v "1806" /t REG_DWORD /d 3 /f (the default) or delete the line. GL
  4. I see it often, even with 'pure' innounp. I think that's a 'feature' of Inno Setup - files ,1 and ,2 are sometimes different, I think when they're destined for different operating systems - unicode and ANSI versions maybe? They're supposed to be renamed without the comma for the OS you're installing it on. I'm pretty sure I've seen that on installs destined both for Win9X and NT*.*, but it was quite some time ago. But most of the time they're identical. GL
  5. I thought I'd report a total success with Asus M2N68 Plus mobo and Fernando's 32bit nForce SATA_IDE driver v11.1.0.33 + Driverpack v7.3 (it was not so obvious which MCP is this and which driver to use). GL

    keyboard layout

I haven't experimented, but I don't think English (United States) can be even removed with nLite. Even if you select ALL languages and keyboard supports, it stays. Maybe it depends on the source or I don't know what the heck I'm talking about (that's possible too). GL
  7. Sorry but i Just checked and the Universal Plug and Play Device Host service was disabled on my laptop. Have set it to manual now. Could that be the reason?? It's the reason for the bottom log entry, but usually (as far as I can see from Internet search, because I never use or enable UPNP) the error isn't critical - the caller application sees UPNP isn't available and just moves on. LOL... hope you can recall/find it soon. pls let me know if and when you can recall it Thanks It was quite easy to be googled, actually. Out of curiosity, which app required MSDTC? GL *Edit: Another link, with few more steps which will also repair some other services (COM+ Event System) and the entire COM+ thing. Please try only if the first one doesn't work.
  8. Your last log entry says there's one more service you need to take care of. It might or might not solve your problem, though. I've done it in the past and I know it's possible (to repair/reinstall) b0rked MSDTC, but I can't find it now for the life of me. It was either regsvr32 or add/remove windows components (my bet right now is on latter). GL
  9. I think it's this Or u can use tweakui GL *Edit: if you're asking about 7 maybe it's this? (Read the comments too)
  10. I hope some clever antivirus company employee* creates a virus that sticks inside the dreaded good-for-nothing-except-for-bloat USN journal. That'll teach them lazy programmers not to play with fire (user's cpu cycles). *noone can't convince me that they aren't the ones that write the nastiest viruses GL
  11. /me sorry too for digging old thread, but it appears that the base install was updated to service pack 2 level, so no need to slipstream anything anymore. GL
  12. Maybe it's the difference about bootmanagers? As far as I can see (I never used it myself), Grub4Dos goes into Boot.ini/BCD, while OSL2000 installs only onto the bootsector (or however it's called) of the partition and it's the first thing run after BIOS. After it finishes, it gives control to Boot.ini/BCD. I think GAG (freeware) also works this way. Now that I read on a little, I think this method in Grub4Dos world is either grubinst or bootlace. The point is not to touch Boot.ini/BCD of the other partition. GL
  13. I knew that , I just oversimplified a bit in order to make it clear which one I'm talking about. But the method works, doesn't it? (I'm NOT claiming I invented any part of it, just don't remember where I picked it up from. Most probably, from everywhere. ) GL
  14. Go to here. GL *Edit: to get rid of it
  15. Yes, few weeks ago and it worked flawlessly (I deleted 7 soon after trying - it's not mature for me yet (or the other way around)). I saw it all the time. That's how I did it before and ended up in your situation. Read my post again carefully, especially the edit. No imaging necessary (except for backup). I'm writing this from the first partition that was intact all the time and I still have boot manager entry for the second one, if I want to install again ANY WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM - I just need to hide this partition, mark the second active, install, unhide, mark the first one active. You need to add just an extra step - instalation of a boot manager. GL * Edit: replaced boot loader with boot manager (I used the term incorrectly in my previous EDIT and maybe created a confusion). Boot manager (elsewhere in my posts) is GRUB4DOS and similar, boot loader is BOOT.INI and Vista/7's thing. Each boot loader will go on it's own partition, while the boot manager goes to the first partition (although I suspect it can be any basic partition, as long as it's marked as active).
  16. I managed to do something like this with partition tools (booting from DOS-based CD). I don't remember exactly which tool was it - Paragon Partition Manager or Acronis Disk Director, but all partition tools should be able to do these basic operations, even the free ones. It's kind of a lot of work, but the reward is - fully independent partitions (and each is named C: when booted into itself, which is what I wanted). Prepare two basic partitions at the start of the HDD Format them as you like (NTFS). Install XP to the first one normally, leave the second one empty, adjust the XP installation as you like and make sure it works. Install some boot manager (there are plenty to choose from, I use OSL2000; make sure it's kinda advanced so it detects the partitions on its own). Boot the partition manager again, HIDE the XP partition, make the 7's partition ACTIVE. Install 7 on the second partition (during setup, make sure you don't let it touch the first one; you'll probably need to go advanced; make sure its own partition is formatted first and don't let it format it) Unhide the first partition This is the tricky part, the boot manager had to be reinstalled (simply by running its setup.exe), but all worked well and INDEPENDENT. I believe I made the mistake that I didn't make the first partition active again (reasoning it shouldn't matter for the boot manager, and it shouldn't - if you choose your boot manager wisely, but it got installed on the second partition; it was fixed easily and the first installation continued to work). Hope that made some sense. GL *Edit (and clarification): Don't let the second installation (during setup) see the other OS or it will 'take over' - change the boot manager on the other partition and/or assign itself another drive letter (that is solvable, but other problems remain - it will never be INDEPENDENT).
  17. Yeah, bad design happens sometimes. Also, Turion = furnace. And if you ever get to Windows, this might help (a little). GL
  18. Really nice videos. I think it also shows nicely the effect of planned obsolence. GL
  19. I had difficulties to find information on HP's site about the chipset, but from the PDF manual (specifications) I downloaded, it seems it's AMD SB700 (soutbridge). So the last link in my previous post should apply, but it's not so detailed - if you're not so experienced with nLite, study the first stickied post by Fernando 1 - he's the resident expert on these things around here. Also, it would be probably a good idea to take his driver from the second post of the topic I linked. If your Vista is still working, maybe you can post a screenshot of Device Manager - expanded hard disk controllers (IDE/Atapi controllers or similar), just in case. Also, as a general word of caution - before you proceed to create a dual boot, I hope you understand all the caveats and traps of multibooting (because you are installing older Microsoft OS after a newer one, you'll at least have to repair Vista bootsector, and there might be other problems). * Edit: your link is also for the Intel chipset (as described in the first pinned topic in nlite forum) that you don't have. It seems HP have put a generic "solution" that doesn't help in all cases. Maybe you can make it work if you download AMD driver (from the post I linked), but it would be more difficult (and you need a floppy). GL
  20. Hi and welcome to the forum. Unfortunately, your link didn't turn out right. There are many HP pavilion dv7 models. Please specify the exact model. I think your best bet (easiest) would be to integrate the drivers using NLite. Please read around nlite forum. The most useful topics for your needs would be some of the stickied ones, "Integration of... sata and ahci drivers", but (I'm guessing now) for your Turion you probably need Integration of AMD / ATI SB7XX textmode RAID / AHCI drivers on an XP which is not stickied. GL
  21. Hi, Some potential problems I see: - Integrating a service pack under Windows 7 (there were many reports of failure, although some succeeded). - C:\Users\Public\windows hotfixes\NDP20SP2-KB974417-x64.exe is not suitable (64-bit). - Also check IE8 hotfixes (where is IE8 itself installed?). I think it was mentioned that IE8 cannot be installed in the form provided by Microsoft - addon is recommended. Sorry, I don't use IE, so I cannot be more accurate. Hope someone else will step in. - Why so many network adapters? GL
  22. Nice guide. Thanks. GL
  23. Thanks for your reply. Are you saying that I can edit the Admin name in nLite and change it to whatever? A big YES. GL
  24. Hi, Only one answer I'm certain of: you can rename the inbuilt Administrator account and set it to autologon. I didn't see any clue in your Last Session.ini why the problems happen. They shouldn't. Some very long shot guesses: - the theme is leaking resources - something wrong with the source/updates/addons - try installing latest DirectX GL
  25. Believe it or not, your answer is pretty close to the actual answer I was told. But think a bit harder... What would happen if you were to set two fires, both spreading in the same direction and burning at the same rate (ignore geometry for now)? It crossed my mind (square within a circle; or other polygons). But no matter how many fires I start, I will always have to retreat to an area with trees - and I can't imagine a situation where it won't spread towards me. If I start a fire in the middle, the two fires will cancel each other out on the other side, but 'my' fire will go towards me. It's all about geometry GL
