  2. ISO : 194mb After installation : 289mb (excluding pagefile)
  3. i do belive it is possible, not sure whether there is a nLite addon though....ive never had much success, but im sure there is a way
  4. Thanks for the link, but I have already read that article and many others. it doesn't really answer the questions I have regarding this OS.
  5. Nice work, cleaned it up a little bit for you. Thanks HougTimo
  6. all i do, is get the files i want to use, use a batch script to rename them to the default XP file names, and compress them to LZX and paste them into the I386 directory.
  7. Erm, i thought microsoft were now telling consumers and OEMS that changing the mobo constitues a new PC, therefore a new windows license is required? Im sure I read this somewhere. PLease correct me if I'm wrong.
  8. Hi, I have just been reading about XP RME, and have a few questions. Firstly : What exactly is taken out of it, like what files and what is the exact reduction in media compatability? Secondly : If one were to install RME, then download WMP10, would it install and work? Thirdly : What alternatives would work properly on it? Thanks in advance, HougTimo Title Edited - Please follow new posting rules from now on. --Zxian
  9. I am sorry but 98SE is NOT a decent OS, in any concievable manner. I can not imagine why anybody would want to run an ancient peice of crapware. The system is not easily customized (services wise) and 2000 / NT based OSes provide much more scope for higher performance tweaks. Aswell as that, a lot of modern applications do not run on 9X operating systems anymore. Why would someone build a system capable of running high-spec applications (also most processors these days are 64-bit, so why run a 32-bit OS?) and then stick an operating system that will prohibit the computer from being used to its fll potential. It just doesnt make sense. HougTimo
  10. Right, I have an exe file I want to execute on first boot of my UAXP CD. Now, could this be done by creating a CMD file to launch the exe, then adding the CMD entry in Winnt.sif under [GuiRunOnce]. Would that method work? or is there another method that would work better? Thanks HougTimo
  11. If you're building a PC, surely your going to want a decent OS on it?? I would highly reccomend Windows 2000, XP PRO or Windows 2003, but definately NOT a 9x system! If you want a cheap pc, I would go for a 754 Sempron, get a mobo with 3+ PCI slots and an AGP slot. maybe an ATI Radeon, 128mb should do. If you want a nice (mid range PC) for for a 939 Athlon X2, theyre still cheap and performance ispractically unlimited. You will get PCI-e graphics with that 2. Either machine will be cheap (less than £1700) Hope this helps HougTimo
  12. such an app would be very usefull
  13. this sounds very much like a driver issue. Try booting up in safe mode and note if it hangs on any drivers
  14. If you have no way of attaching a floppy drive, copy the contents of the XP CD to a blank cd, and burn it (i do this with CD Burner XP pro) with a boot image from Bootdisk.com, then when you get the dos prompt 'cd' to the I386 dir, and run winnt.exe Thats How i managed to do it on an older laptop. 15. Hi, What exactly is the difference between BAT and CMD files? As far as I can tell they're about the same. Are they just the same with a different file extension? Thanks HougTimo
  16. AFAIK Office 12 is still in beta
  17. Hi, I al making a custom recovery cd for my laptop. So far I have: Custom : Ntoskrnl.exe, Winlogon.exe, Logonui.exe, Explorer.exe, msgina.dll, shell32.dll My own default theme, ccleaner, adobe reader, AdAware Personal, Everest Home integrated. SP2 and all hotfixes slipstreamed. Windows installer 3.1, WMP10, DX 9.0c slipstreamed. and it is quite hevily nlited. Now, I have an Iconpackager theme which I currently apply to XP using tuneup utilities. I want to include these as the defauly icons for my xp though. The only way i thought of being able to do this was extracting all the icons (which I have done) and changing them in Shell32 / explorer / mydocs and related dlls. It seems a bit of a hassle though. is there any easier way to do this? thanks HougTimo
  18. Hi, I am looking for some nice, stylish greyscale icons for the following apps: avant Photoshop Imageready Sketchup CCleaner Tuneup Utilities MSN Messenger mIRC I need ICO and PNG Variants of them If anybody would like to voulanteer, then plz reply here. Thanks HougTimo

  20. I can't belive anyone didnt check WFP, it was probably that. tut tut.
  21. Got a suggestion for you... On the screenshot showing the start menu, it looks REALLY ugly. Why dont you remove the start menu and button, and have the 'All Programs' icons showing on the taskbar. If you are only gaming you'll have only 1 app open at a time, so there is no need for the taskbar really. Just a suggestion - its easy to do, just some alteration to Explorer.exe EDIT :: Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar HougTimo
  22. Hi, I this is the first time ive really used XP Pro on a laptop with a battery. Now, when running off the battery the icon in they system tray stays at whatever percent it was at when the computer booted up. if i mouse-ove it it shows the correct amount of time and amount of battery left, but the actualy icon doesnt seem to update. Is there any way to change this? maybe through the registry? thanks HougTimo
  23. Hmmm, very interesting indeed. I shall look out for 'Windows Internals, 4th Edition' it sounds worth a good read. Thanks for all the info HougTimo
  24. Hi, I have a couple of small questions about XP memory management. For this experiment I used two computers: Computer 1: AMD Athlon XP 2000+ (1.67GHz) 1024mb RAM 300GB S-ATA 80GB IDE DVD Re-Writer Computer 2 (Laptop): Intel Celeron (600MHz) 192MB Ram 40GB HDD CD Drive I installed a full copy of XP Pro on each, and exactly the same programs. These were: Ad-Aware Personal AVG Personal Edition Zonealarm Pro Photoshop CS Avant Browser CCleaner Now, the laptop (Computer 2) always seemed to have a bigger % of its ram free than computer 1 did, and also the laptop booted up much quicker aswell (beat computer 1 by about 3 seconds). Does XP recognise how much RAM you have and optimise itself to that amount of ram? So you would get good performance even on a minimal amount of ram? Thanks in Advance HougTimo
  25. I had a similar problem with my athlon xp 2000+ after replacing the fan and heatsink. it would boot into windows then EXACTLY (and i mean to-the-second) 3 minutes after running it would freeze, completely. solver by taking the heatsink and fan off, cleaning the old therml paste, re-applying it and reseating everything. MAKE SURE YOUR HEATSINK IS ON THE CORRECT WAY UP! On the Socket A athlons, it is able to be fitted either way, but I've found there is only really one way up for it that works. Hope this helps HougTimo
