  1. I need to have cleartype on windows 2000. Now all i need is a list of the files that relate to cleartype and i can do the rest from there. Could someone provide me with this please? THanks HougTimo
  2. Media Center 2005 does show as 2002 in system properties, as it is basically normal XP pro with add ons. Also, media center 2005 does not ship with Media Player 10. You need to update that yourself. I am sure you do have XP media Center 2005, it just has quirks
  3. The PCI adapter is made by Maxtor. Upgrading the firmware and drivers was the first thing i did, so it isnt that. anoy other ideas?
  4. Always used Kingston, mmostly because it is very available here.
  5. Hi, I recently purchased a 300GB Maxtor S-ATA HDD (with PCi Adapter) which I now have in my PC running along side an 80GB IDE HDD. The new maxtor runs perfect, its fast and silent, XP installed first time with no problems too. Now I have a couple of problems: 1) I i try to extract a RAR archive that is split into parts, at least 2 of the parts will be 'corrupt' and it'll be a different 2 every time i try. It works perfectly first time from the IDE drive though 2)If i use nLite on files on the Sata drive, components are removed, but non of the tweaks are applied. I have checked the NTFS permissions etc... and everything is fine there. Using nLite on the IDE drive also works fine. I would apppeciate any help. I just really want to know whether its a hardware fault or software. Thanks HougTimo
  6. It clearly states on their notice boards that their athlon 64 gaming systems (of course i wouldnt use it for gaming) have DDR2 RAM 0_o
  7. WTF! Yes they do lol, I was in PC world this morning looking at an Athlon 64 X2 with DDR2 Ram 0_o
  8. Hi, My mum has just bought a new buisness PC, which I have some questions regarding the processor. specs: Athlon 64 (i forget wich model number) 1GB DDR2 RAM 939 Asus NF4 Board 256 mb ATI raedon (PCI-e) 160gb S-ata hdd. It is a very nice machine, but... I was suprised to discover that the processor has a clock speed of 1900mhz. Now I know that AMD model numbers do not correspond to the clock speed (as i run an athlon XP) but, it was quite a high-end processor we went for (something like a 3800 i think). Now my athlon XP runs at the same clock speed as the 64, (in every other respect my machine is relaively the same, regarding vid card, ram (although its ddr400) etc..., but there is a HUGE difference in speed between mine and my mum's. Mum's also out strips (by MILES...) OUR p4 3.2 GHZ machine with a gig of ram also. Now do the athlon 64s actually run quicker than system properties / everest / tuneup utilities suggest? or is it simply the difference in speed between 64 bit and 32 bit? (it is running XP Pro 32 bit). thanks HougTimo
  9. Hi, I use windows server 2003 as my main os on my main machine, I have just aquired a laptop and I am wondering about installing server 2003 on it aswell. However, i need to no if it will cope ok with it, or whether I'm better off with 2000 Pro. Specs: Intel Celeron 600MHZ 192MB RAM 12GB HDD CD Rom Drive I have drivers for the machine for Server 2003, just not sure whether it'll be quick and responsive in use, like 2000 is. Any opinions / help are greatly appreciate. Thanks HougTimo
  10. Hi, I run Windows 2003 on my PC, and since I have 2gb of RAM I do not have a pageing file, and everything runs fine with no problems, I have been running it like this for about 6 months. But when loading photoshop, i get a message saying "Windows is running without a paging file, and does improve performance and adobe reckons i should set up a proper one etc......." I AM NOT however going to setup a paging file, and while Photoshop does work properly and everything, the message is just annoying. Dpes anybody know anyway of suppressing it?? thanks HougTimo
  11. Hi, I have XP Professional, and it has taken a liking to hanging just before the logon box appears. I just get a black screen and it will hang for about 1-2 minutes there. I have a feeling it is to do with some service i disabled, but not sure which ones would have this effect (it isnt plug&play service, which i know has that effect). Also if i log off the current user it does the same thing before displaying the logon box again, its really annoying, so any help is greatly appreciated. Also, re-installing isnt an option, so please dont suggest it! Thanks in Advance HougTimo
  12. ok, so you used 5048pe instead of 4074pe, because of driver support to make the XP 'seal?' It starts to boot ok, but automatically installs wrongly. am i right so far?? So, obviously from this we can learn that if we cant get Longhorn's 5048pe to install XP we should open the newspaper again (...and readit it presumably??)
  13. Ive had the same problem as you. I found if i slipstreamed SP2 into the installation files and did a reinstall i worked perfectly, it just seems to be if you install SP2 after windows is installed. In my case it was on 1200 computers which I am now network manager for (local buisness), so thats what i would reccomend doing, but if any1 knows another way around it, then please let us know. BTW, i noticed you said you had run HP about it, are they HP computers? i ask this because all of the ones it happend on here were on contract from HP-education UK. thnks tim

  16. The reason i want to go through all the source files is that I am creating a custm versio of windows xp. it is currently at beta 2. the aim of the project is to have a reasonably small install, while keeping most of the functionality of windows, mainly aimed at developers and people ith older pcs. anyway, thanks for your help ppl! cheers tim

  18. Hi, i am in need of a list of files that can be safely deleted from the i386 folder of the XP Pro source. I know there are a load of dos apps in there that are never used etc.. I did find a post about it on this forum, about a month ago, and have not been able to find it again , I have done loads of searches for it, and spend all day looking. so, If any1 could point me to that post, or similar, i would be very greatfull. It is deleting files BEFORE installation in the source im after, not once XP is installed. thanks tim
  19. Hi, I have known about Windows XP Embedded for a while, but only started to look into it recently. can someone tell me exactly what it is, and is it a viable alternative to a regular XP Pro? what features does / doesnt it have? what hardware does it need? / what is the minimum spec hardware it can be used on? thanks - any info at all is very usefull. thanks tim
  20. yes, i've done all of that, and i've got the folders in the root dir of the cd. It all completes ok, but just doesnt happen when i install
  21. Hi, I have downloaded all of the latest files, but I can seem to get it to work properly. I am trying to integrate all of them apart from Masstorage. I complete all of the steps (tried all 3 methods) and it completes successfully and everything. But after i pack it all into an iso and install (on real hardware) it doesnt detect some of my hardware (XP has in-built drivers for the rest), I have checked and it should support my hardware which is: Nforce2 Chipset Onboard LAN & Audio (& the rest of onboard devices) Geforce FX 5200 D-link DWL-120. In the windows xp install procedure and on first boot there is no sign of any drivers being copied / installed. I know I have done exactly what is in all of the tutorials, I've even had someone walk me though it over msn messenger. I just cant seem to get it to work. any help would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance tim
  22. is there no system file in windows 2000 that has the images for the taskbar/start menu/window borders?? surely there must be?
  23. had a look at msgina.dll, only seems to be the logon app tho, is there anyway to edit what the taskbar / window borders look like? thanks tim
  24. does anybody know if it possibly to port themes from XP to 2k? thanks tim
  25. The reason I want to upgrade is i work with big graphics files (i mean kinda 4-7gb per file) and i have been advised that a 64-bit system would handle it much better. Yes I have upgraded EVERYTHING inside the PC, so only the case and floppy drive are original
