I have tried the main update in a virtual machine. I got two errors : Can't find CDFS.VXD and can't find HH.EXE. I just had to click on OK both times and it carried on. Then for quite a long time a DOS windows remains on screen with file not found written in it but the install process carried on. And I have been able to reboot. It's getting good.

Windows 98se, IE and Unofficial service pack Installation?
eidenk replied to unof's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Many multimedia apps such as media players and stuff won't run properly with a too old DirectX. I'd recommend version 8.1b for systems under 1 Ghz and 9.0c for faster machines. -
The old versions are all on Sourceforge.

Maybe your drives are marked as removable drives in the System Properties/Device Manager/Disk Drives. I am not 100% sure but I think the recycle bin does not work on removable drives.

You don't need to reshack to change the start menu icons. Editing the registry is enough. Shutdown is 27 not 28 BTW. 28 is shared overlay. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons "27"="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\shell32.dll,27" Desktop Architect (freeware) for example allows you to change those icons without editing the registry by hand. http://www.brothersoft.com/Desktop_Archite...load_12104.html

Use a case conversion utility such as this one I am using : http://adfware.free.fr/files/caseconv.zip

With Toobar Control you can customize your throbbers (separately for Explorer and IE) or remove them : http://www.virtualplastic.net/html/down_app.html With RegShot you can monitor what you change with Toolbar Control in the registry : http://www.paraglidernc.com/RegShot.html Hence you can easily find out what registry entries you need to add to your unattended setup to customize or remove the throbbers. Hope this helps.

Tweak UI has been disabled by your administrator.
eidenk replied to ashleypower's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
That's interesting. Normally Regedit should also be blocked by this setting. At least it is on my ME system. Did you modify something of Regedit such as it's location and/or name ? -
Hi Spiritpyre, Just thought about something. Maybe you want one day to make one single shellex out of the two toggle ones, using a submenu. And maybe you could also add a third a third item to toggle system files view. I'd see it like that : Toggle - Extensions --------- Hidden files --------- System files

That's the setting in the registry you want to modify or delete : HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System "DisableRegistryTools"=dword:00000001 Obviously you can't do it with Regedit as it's use is also blocked by this policy setting. You can use either a third party registry editor, MS Poledit or easier, the freeware Regtick : http://woundedmoon.org/win32/regtickpro.zip Go in the "System" page and untick the "Disable MS Registry Tools" checkbox on the top left of the page This should get you sorted. -
I haven't got XP so I haven't got a clue.

Service pack for Windows 98 Standard (First, Gold)
eidenk replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
I am surprised Petr did not answer you yet. I guess he'd be interested by any file you might have that he hasn't got. I am not sure he still does maintain this pack to be honest. No one seems much interested by this pack apparently. I guess there aren't many 98FE users around. erpdude is the one who otherwise knows the most about the wheabouts of this pack so I guess he'll tell you a bit more than I do some time soon if Petr does not do so. -
Sometimes in desperate cases, all that's left is the good old rope trick. It can solve all problems.

How to Extend or Add new Items .........

Nice posts lunac. Just do not too much agree with you about RAM. Unbranded is a bit of a lottery. It may work or it may not. In my own experience, I went back last year four times to the local computer shop to swap unbranded memory bars the dealer was telling me where top quality. Finally he gave me some Samsungs and it all went well. He did not charge me the extra bucks for the Samsungs. But the rebate was not worth the harrassment. Just my own experience. Now I always ask for Samsungs and so far it always works well. For HDD I now go only for Western Digital Caviar for some reason. Well I lost a few Maxtors.

If you were reading a bit the very recent posts in the dedicated Service Pack thread you would have read this. I couldn't put it better :

How to change Win98SE system files's date attributes?
eidenk replied to KamyKaze's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
I've just tried it on ME. It doesn't do timestamp on folders apparently. That area of the app is entirely disabled. It is still superior to the one I posted as you can change folder attributes. -
How to change Win98SE system files's date attributes?
eidenk replied to KamyKaze's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
I found you a download link here : http://mikrocomputertechnik.fh-mannheim.de...65/pplus165.exe I thought you wanted to stamp files, not folders. I don't think it does stamp folders. Anyway you can try it now. What it can do is batch stamping of files within subfolders. -

This HashTab does not seem to install properly on 98/ME. The file gets written to my disk but it seems nothing gets written to the registry. I have tried to use regsvr32 to register the dll as you can usually do but it won't work. Can someone be kind enough to post the registry entries Hashtab writes in your system ?

Does anyone know of an explorer freze fix that also works with IE 5.5 SP2 ? Despite I have on my system the very files that are transplanted to IE6 to address this bug, explorer freezes when deleting/copying/ moving quantities of very small sized files. Moving 100 1kb files at once will freeze my explorer for almost sure whereas moving 1000 1Mb files at once will create no problem.
