Same for me. I can't install the last 3 hotfixes for Microsoft Office XP on my recently finished windows install. I have tried deleting some of the cat files but it still doesn't work, they always fail to install. This is with ryanvm 1.3.0 beta pack and all addons installed.

RyanVM's update pack and this forum's sticky topic
dale5605 replied to senshi's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Ryan's 1.3.0 pack is coming out in a week or less and that will have its own gui integrator if you care to wait. I have beta tested the pack and it is very nice. -
Buidling a QUIET PC - little help pls!
dale5605 replied to DrowningInTheBS's topic in Hardware Hangout
If you want a really good cpu cooler that is ultra quiet look no further than this: http://www.xoxide.com/zalman-7700-cu-cpu-cooler.html I have it and I can't even hear it on full blast. Cools great, the temps speak for themselves. Also, I have a DFI lanparty NF4 ultra-D. The zalman fits perfectly on the board. The 4th ram slot is slightly obstructed though. If you install the ram in that slot prior to the zalman you'll be fine. Although, with a little effort I was able to get a stick of ram into the 4th slot with the zalman already installed. -
Unnoficial Windows Millenium Edition Service Pack
dale5605 replied to mitchellovision's topic in Windows 9x/ME
But won't you achieve that only because your new ME will be 95% xp? -
I'm expecting at least 8ghz from you.

Didn't mean to repeat you, just wanted to illustrate that the test was not all-inclusive.

The Intel 6xx series support 64bit. The 5xx do not.

XP Pro AMD64 build 1830--a8n-sli deluxe troubles.
dale5605 replied to gpwolfe's topic in Windows XP 64 Bit Edition
It's a really great OS and is a lot better than xp 32bit. Because it is built off server 2003 which is made for stability. The fault is your own, not the os. -
Programs running in 32 or 64 bit?
dale5605 replied to Hammer136's topic in Windows XP 64 Bit Edition
Actually windows x64 edition cannot run 16 bit programs. -
"These results does NOT show the ranking of the overall firewall features, but only of a single component, the outbound application filtering." So that isn't a complete test. I have heard that windows firewall doesn't filter outbound, hence the zero score in that catagory.

Umm, what new version? 1.0 beta 6 isn't out yet...
-
Well of course they don't take advantage. They would have to be 64bit to take advantage. There is actually a version of 64bit far cry that takes full advantage of 64bit. It gives you a better looking and smoother running game than the 32bit version. You can see the improvements of the 64bit version here: http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/Develo...5E10543,00.html

Is 64bit really better than 32bit?
dale5605 replied to Brando569's topic in Windows XP 64 Bit Edition
There isn't any speed difference between windows 32bit and windows 64bit when it comes to running 32bit programs and games. But overall the OS is a little bit faster and 64bit programs and games (far cry) are better and faster. -
You the man boooggy! your latest pack works great

Windows firewall isn't supposed to stop spyware. That's what Microsoft Antispyware is for.

Integration of nvRaid drivers into XPx64 and W2k3x64

Did you format the drive? If so you erased all the data. -
Integration of nvRaid drivers into XPx64 and W2k3x64
dale5605 replied to Fernando 1's topic in nLite
I don't see what the problem with the winnt.sif is. Do all the steps in nLite except create ISO and after all that is done and winnt.sif is created then do the editing. -
Go into your network connections and right click on your internet connection. Right-click and select 'properties'. Go to advanced tab. Click on 'settings' for windows firewall. Make sure firewall is 'on'. Under 'exceptions' make sure 'display a notification' box is ticked. Under 'advanced' make sure your internet connection is ticked. To test you can delete the exception entry for one of your programs and then open it.

Apparently windows firewall doesn't fall for the naming something explorer.exe trick either.
-
I'm not sure about other firewalls, but I know for a fact that Sygate wouldn't fall for the "explorer.exe" trick. I just made a "program" using Quick Batch File Compiler that would simply ping Google and write the entries to a text file. I named the executable explorer.exe and ran it. Sygate immediately popped up and asked me what I wanted to do. I'll have to disagree with both of you on this one. I have a friend who's computer I set up a while back with Sygate as a firewall (she had bought NAV and wanted to keep using it). She was using P2P programs in an uneducated way and came to me one day saying that Sygate was starting to ask her about all these new programs that wanted to connect to the internet. Turned out (after a visit to HouseCall) that a number of viruses/trojans had slipped past NAV and were trying to "call home". All I did to set up Sygate was ask her what programs she used on the net, ran them, and let Sygate ask me what to do (in this case, allow those programs access). I'd really like to see someone with the Windows Firewall produce the same type of results. I'm not saying that Sygate is 100% (nothing is), but it's definately better than the default. I may not have "scientific" proof per se, but I have plenty of experience to backup my opinion. (I use Sygate in all of my examples because it is the program I am the most familiar with. IMO, it is the best freeware software firewall available - note, IMO. Others may think otherwise, but for the common user a firewall that interacts with the user, at least on a first-time basis, is better than one that completely handles itself.) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Windows firewall does the exact same thing. It asks you if you want to unblock a program that is trying to access the internet, or keep blocking it. Once you unblock a program that you use and trust it is added to the windows firewall exception list and is granted internet access.

What? The spywareblaster database I have loaded is dated 8/4/05. And the detections I have for spybot S&D are dated 8/5/05. These are both great programs and are updated quite frequently. Months old? Me thinks you don't know what you are talking about.

This topic is kind of funny. I have 160gb of hard disk and it comes out to 152gb as well. This is perfectly normal. Like it's already been said before it's because of the 1000 to 1024 thing. There is no way to get that space back because it isn't there. That's like converting 2.34 cm to 1 inch and then asking where your 1.34 inches went to?!? LOL

I think this would be the best choice for power supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16817104153 The fan is green LED btw if that matters.

The big problem with the Windows firewall is that it is easily circumvented by malware and it doesn't scan outgoing traffic at all. As for third-pary firewalls, I don't get any "pesky" pop-ups from Sygate, and I only need to allow the program access to the network once and it leaves me alone. I've never had a "false" alert with Sygate, perhaps one that Sygate thinks is a threat, but actually isn't. So I just adjust a setting and all is well. It's better to have a little bit of a tighter system that you then have to open up for your programs than a wide-open system (which is essentially what you've got now). I know other programs act in the same way (BitDefender, Kerio, etc). <{POST_SNAPBACK}> My system isn't open at all. Windows firewall might not be completely conprehensive but it does enough. I still have a hardware router firewall and antivirus/antispyware programs.

Integration of nvRaid drivers into XPx64 and W2k3x64

SATA 4-7 is the SIL. So disabling those would probably do the trick.
