  1. I would upgrade the laptop if it is possible and stick XP Pro on it. I would upgrade the hard drive to a 100 gig 7200 rpm if your laptop surpports it and stick as much RAM as your laptop can handle as well. The performance difference you will notice is staggering. If you are happy and you want to go a step ahead then grab nLite and tweak your XP install further.
  2. I think dirt is talking about your xp setup.
  3. Man this review is so bogus. First off it is pcworld...and they are as commercial as it gets...and then theres no NOD in the list so you know that this is bogus stuff.
  4. Very long Q&A session. Nice find thanks.
  5. Neat stuff! I really wish it was like an MS powertoy or something!
  6. Interesting find Gouki. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
  7. Thanks for the heads up fizban. I really hope Vista does not need a SP to come into its own. I am quite tired of using XP and want something fresh!!!!
  8. Typical Dell hater response. It is a known fact that nforce chipsets have Vista related problems
  9. I read HP is gearing up with drivers for 64 bit OSes.
  10. Nice tutorial. I agree with all your points but I would rather not have any kind of dependency on AV progs or even spyware cleaners and firewalls but such is life....the more popular you are the more enemies you have.
  11. This is an SDK...so there is possibly no relation with gaming performance increases for a person who is just interested in getting the latest DX version for gaming? Am I right? Or wrong?
  12. What did you find buggy about x64?
  13. How about a different AV program like NOD?
  14. I am getting used to the interface I must say. I guess you just need to give it a bit of time! Not too bad. Lets hope people take off the ridiculous 10 mb email attachment limits. I like sending full res pics from my DSLR and a bunch at a time instead of resizing them and so on.
  15. The english version? It has been out for a while.....I dont understand what you are saying sorry. All these ideas are quite interesting. I am interested to see how they pan out. I havent instaleld any of their software though cause it is too early I think in the game.
  16. I used office 2k3 for a while and I really enjoyed using it. Very fast. But now I am using OpenOffice because it had the save to pdf feature and it is free so I dont feel guilty about bumming the copy of 2k3 from my friend and you know I quite like Openoffice. It is a bit clunky to start and so on but it gets the job done. I dont think it is just worth spending hundreds and hundreds on Office suites anymore considering there is a free version out that saves to pdf and so on. It does almost everything that 2k3 does for me...being a home user it is a no brainers choice to use OOo. But if you are in a corporate environment I would not be too sure to use OOo.
  17. Agreed cluberti. http://www.planetx64.com/index.php?option=...&id=5&Itemid=52 might be interesting for those debating on the performance benefits of x64. But as posters have already pointed out not all is well in the 64 bit OS land. There are driver issues and so on. As for responsive I wouldnt know though I would expect that to be the case since it is based on wind 2k3 SP1 codebase and apparently MS went to town with a lot of reworking in the kernel and memory management areas which is great stuff. I think 64 bit OSes will pick up steam once Vista 64 bit is out and then you will start seeing more driver and software support. I want to see a game engine written from scratch for 64 bit machines. Wonder if the performance improvements will be as drastic as demonstrated in that article.
  18. Yeah I agree jlavin. I dont use xp 64 bit unless it is for something like this kind of stuff http://www.planetx64.com/index.php?option=...&id=5&Itemid=52 But that is the only real benefit of x64 I see is that if you have properly written software and drivers for the 64 bit platform you are going to see huge gains in performance. Other than that, the 64 bit is just fun for enthusiastic people and it supposedly manages memory and resources better but it is a moot point since you cant do much with it. For example the Starforce drivers are a pain in the a** as a lot of games I like to play are protected using Starforce. As for your problem, I am confused. You ordered 64 bit XP and now you want to revert to 32 bit so you ordered a copy of that as well. Err...cant you back up your stuff?
  19. Well the one thing I can think of is the increased number of registers. Also if you go to www.planetx64.com you will see a review of Lightwave 3d a popular program ported to 64 bit and check out the performance differences! It is unbelieveable. Here is the link http://www.planetx64.com/index.php?option=...&id=5&Itemid=52
  20. Sorry I lost track of this thread. Thanks for all the great information you guys.
  21. When I saw the title, I thought it was talking about how you can change the existing Windows XP themes colors and so on without resorting to using 3rd party software. I wonder if there is a way...make everything grey or black...kind of like the Vista look...
  22. So I am not gonna download this and muck up my setup. I already boot in 20 seconds on a laptop so I should be good. Oh yeah and I hibernate so there is like only a 5 second delay.
