  1. Well I see the CPU INIT message in the back of the motherboard. There is a little lcd panel there and that just goes straight to CPU INT. I dont think the CPU is at fault. It is more than likely the mobo is to blame. I am going to remove the CMOS battery, then I am going to set the CMOS jumper to reset, leave it out overnight, then go to frys and get a cheap crappy ddr2 667 mhz 512 mb memory and see if that boots with that. I think it could be the memory.
  2. Its not about the cds...its about bloat... So I have a bit of a problem. The monitor came in. I cnnected a dual dvi to the card and to the back of the monitor...started up the computer..started up the monitor but it is still in standby mode. So does that mean that I need a smaller lower res monitor to install the OS and all that before I hook up the larger monitor? I mean right now there is no OS installed. Its either that or I messed up somewhere big time because computer turns on but there are no beeps or anything...it just turns on but its as if nobody is home...no POST no nothing. Suggestions? btw I have all the hardware in including 4 sticks of ram and the cards in sli mode. I dont think thats the right way to go is it. I should install just one card first then do SLI?
  3. It´s not vLite, it´s the users that need to be fixed . Oooh! Burn! I like the sound of Vista fitting onto a cd with all the sp and bug fixes. Till that happens count me out
  4. I have yet to try vlite but I am sure they will have fixed all the issues with it by the time I get interested in Vista My monitor comes in tomorrow! Just another 24 hours!!!! WHOOHOO!!
  5. I think crap is too strong of a word. I believe with a healthy dose of nLite and using Vista Business, and going with the x64 version it can be a pretty good OS. Oh and lets not forget the SP!
  6. I didnt know there was a quad core patch coming out. I thought the game was developed with that in mind. But then again it does not support SLI yet and they are focusing on that right now...so I guess you could be right. That does bode well for my rig And also the SSE4 patch. I believe they are introducing that as well.
  7. Why only 4 gig? haha cuz I dont think I will be able to max out anything more than 4 gig...and it would just be a waste of money And I would be interested to know where you read that from. I could be wrong!
  8. I have done a lot of reading on the engine and the console variables that Crytek have left quite open for us to tweak. That alone has intrigued me more than the game itself tbh . A guy named MadBoris has put an awesome spreadsheet together of all the cvars and what you can do to it and people have taken it a step further by creating profiles depending on the type of machine you have. Al I can say is people who hadCrysis previously unplayable are not enjoying a healthy boost in performance and enjoying it a lot more even while unlocking a bit more eye candy! I am curious to see what my rig would do...but what kind of fps and settings are yall playing at?
  9. Thanks kuster. And you are right I bought it and put it together to have fun with it. I am really enjoying the comments back and forth because I am learning and seeing people's arguments. I do not want it to turn into just another XP vs Vista thread but it is quite refreshing to see ripken so enthusiastic about his POV. Not a lot of people stick to their guns. Its not a matter of right or wrong...its just a matter of him providing good arguments. So guys dont make all this stuff personal please ripken you are right that I have too much power if there is such a thing. BUT coming from a computer science background it just irks me when something new comes out and if it is supposed to be better it is supposed to be faster. That is just plain and simple. I have read your arguments but you have not been able to convince me yet though. I mean why does Vista need 6 gigs of disk space. Why does the Microsoft patches work for some people and not for others when they said it would fix the slow unzip and the really slow file copy? Why has DX 10 been unable to provide what they had promised, ie, better looking games and more frames per second with all the shiny bits enabled? Yes some of it could be the APIs are so radically new that people are still figuring out all that stuff. But then as I said before you take a look at a game like Far Cry and you could basically replicate the DX 10 look with the DX 9 codepath. The only difference between DX 10 and DX 9 is the way you code, and the way the driver model works supposedly with less overhead. So who benefits from DX 10? Not the end consumer because half the time they cant even tell the difference...but the people who are coding the games! Heck even Epic's Mark Rein and Tim Sweeney and id's John Carmack have said there is no reason to move to Vista in terms of gaming. How do you argue with those guys?! I am going to ride out the XP wave and altogether skip Vista. That was my original goal. BUT...if by SP2 Microsoft gets Vista pulled together or even before that and performance is on par with XP or mightily close, if Nvidia gets their driver act together, etc etc, I will move over. I am not xenophobic in the least but no one has been able to convince me of the pros of Vista. All I see are the cons. bonnestonne, punto is right. SLI wont help photoshop...maybe some video rendering in some really professional apps but most of it is offloaded to the CPU. punto, yes that HP is quite nice and I got a 100 dollar rebate off of the price too! I was originally going to go with the Gateway XHD3000 but I read about the heat issues, and also the scaling chip is good for everything except PC input I think...and also its a first revision product and was already shown to have a defect in it. So that turned me off of it. Couldnt justify spending 500 more bucks on it. D_block you really want to know how much it cost? I am not going to put the price on the forum to display hehe cause I am embarassed...
  10. Actually its not that loud...mind I have yet to put an OS on it yet cause I cant see the screen since I dont havve the monitor yet! But still it really is not loud. The fans I got are just awesome. I have 6 120 mm fans in there not to mention the gpu fans. I am sure when under full steam its gonna get louder but I kid you not its whisper quiet. Those Scythe fans are just the shizz! I am going to stick with 2 raptors since I dont have that much in terms of "data". I am going to get an external hard drive to store my anime and all that. So really only games and some work stuff will go and 300 gig is more than adequate especially if I install XP 64 bit which I already have nLited. I think Vista will indeed work great given the current state of vLite. I read that the iso image is down to 575 mb which means that can go on to a cd and that post install its only taking 240 mb of memory and 2.2 gigs of hard drive space. But this is v1.1 and in beta and also SP1 aint out yet. So maybe I will consider Vista 6 months later. Like I already have said before the fact is despite my rig being quite powerful, there is plenty of evidence saying that Vista is NOT faster than XP, its NOT equal to the performance of XP and thus I have no desire right now to put that on my machine. Given a bit more time like another year, I am sure Vista will turn out to be excellent just like XP turned out to be excellent after SP2. I just do not believe going to Vista right now will be a great idea. I think people who have migrated over to Vista just went for the next new thing kind of a deal and that is fine too. I am just a bit of a performance freak so knowing that I am spending extra cpu cycles on useless stuff just annoys me. That and all the I/O issues to me it is a no brainer to NOT go with Vista. My 2 cents. And check this out. Makes my point succintly http://www.msfn.org/comments.php?catid=1&a...15#comment15591
  11. I agree with the unused ram. I agree with the multithreading. Fact is as has been shown many times on various sites and user testimonies...all that made no difference apparently because the end result is Vista is not faster. If this is the performance WITH all those enhancements that does not bode too well for Vista in my book.
  12. Haha and dont forget performance. I really dont have a problem with him trying to convince me. I enjoy arguments becuase that way I learn about new things. I am not always correct after all!
  13. I intend to run with XP until I find a need for Vista pretty much. I like the UI in Vista. Thats about the only thing. ITs slow that is my biggest problem. A lot of things seem incomplete and broken. XP has been tested and been fixed quite well so until there is a compelling reason and no DX 10 is not a compelling reason...and neither are the slow I/O issues...and neither is the slow startup...etc etc a good enough reason for me to try out Vista. I am not going to spend 200 bucks for a copy of an OS that really has nothing new to offer.
  14. Yeah it definitely seems to have an edge over the creative...hmm but would I really notice it? Also with DX 10...well not many games are out warranting a slower OS. Take crysis for example. Compare the dx 9 very high settings and dx 10 no difference. You can actually tweak the engine to get the dx 10 look while running on xp in DX 9 mode.
  15. Looks like the exact same as the card I got down to the PCB except for some more connections at the back and maybe one more Dolby codec. I could be wrong though. But the main reason I went for the creative setup is that external box. Agreed that things will be developed predominantly for Vista ONLY but that seems to not have happened yet and not for the forseeable future especially considering that the EOL of XP has been pushed even further into the future. People know that there are some who have moved to Vista and some who have not. It would be foolish of them to give up on XP as a dominant platform just yet.
  16. What do you mean the options are better? Thanks

  18. Sorry but what do you mean the new x-fi? Cause this is the one I got. http://us.creative.com/products/product.as...p;product=14064 And I didnt go with watercooling cause I am kind of scared of it Also the mouse is just fine. It fits well in my hand. And I adapt very easily as well Also the reason why I am debating XP vs Vista is because of the drop in fps in games and other performance glitches that are present in Vista. I think XP has been around long enough and so has XP 64 bit to go with that for now. And honestly seeing as there is virtually no difference between DX 10 and DX 9 games at the moment other than DX 9 games just have much higher fps I dont see a reason to go with Vista. Heck even SP1 is not out yet and from all the reading I have done (granted the SP1 is still in RC status) there is no performance improvement. Maybe a delta of 1-2%. I was expecting higher than that. Also vlite is only in 1.1 beta so I am gonna give Vista a few more months say mid of next year another look and then see if there is any benefit. And I will prob upgrade my cards again next year when the nextgen is out. By then 10.1 DX may catch on...who knows.

    vLite 1.0 beta - OMG

Keep up the great work nuhi. I am looking forward to the final release. In the meantiem I got a question for you knowledgeable folks. I bought a sweet new XPS laptop from Dell fully loaded and it comes with Vista Home Premium on it. And I also get a recovery DVD from them as well. I was wondering if it is possible to vLite that DVD? I think it is like purchasing an OEM Vista isnt it? I should have the key slapped on my laptop as a sticker tag as far as I understand.
  22. Havent been here in a while...but right now as it stands Vista Ultimate can be basically imaged on to a CD and vLite is only in beta right now?!
  23. Thanks eyeball, are you by any chance talking about this tweak? http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/399/ Becasue I have that enabled already and honestly I dont see the difference. [Edit] http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1015/ is also another tweak I found with regard to page sizes and so on. I have 2 gigs of RAM on my laptop. Anyone done this tweak so that Windows just forgets about using complex algorithms to figure out the best page file size and set it permanently so that it can use memory efficiently? Thanks for all answers!
  24. So I got a question for you XP memory gurus. I tried running a search but I got too many hits and it wasnt of use to me. If someone could point me to a relevant topic that will answer my question I will appreciate it and then we wont have to make this thread go any longer than it needs to be. My question is this...I am running this software that takes up 2.14 gb of page file usage as shown in the Task Mnager. However I have 2 gigs of RAM on my laptop and so one would expect that the operating system would load all that data into the RAM and not touch the hard disk at all. But as of right now I see my PF usage as 2.14 gb and my physical memory showing as 1129008 KB as available. So no my question is this...since that means a gig of my RAM is available, why isnt XP making the most efficient use of my RAM? Any pointers? Any registry tweaks?
