  1. And boy its fast. I just ran a prelim couple of benchmarks no oclock just latest drivers. Scored over 17k in 3dmark I dont know if that is about the average or not have to dig around for some more info. And then ran Cinebench 10 and got some decent numbers there too. What other benchmark tools/softwares do yall use?
  2. Man that is the ultimate performance boost to your system! It just kinda makes you stop and think at the potential performance that remains unlocked in your system! WOW I want!
  3. http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&amp...amp;modelmenu=1 Thats good news for me...but I want the Striker board!!! Come on let me have some Christmas gaming fun Asus!
  4. Exactly. I have a thread bookmarked on all the options that are available in the game engine and how to create your own cfg file for the game so you can enable effects you want and so on. Seems there is virtually no difference between DX 9 and 10 except some performance as is the case with most DX 10 games and that is why I am sticking with XP.
  5. http://www.hothardware.com/News/Asus_NV_78...LI/default.aspx Oh hell yes I am so excited!
  6. Samsung is the best. I am thinking of grabbing one for storage purposes later on to go with my raptor raid 0 setup.
  7. So what you are saying is .NET is unlike Java, where if you have 1.6 you can run anything dating all the way back to 1.3 version for the most part? The reason I ask is because i have more knowledge on Java than on the .NET framework and I would like to know becasue there are some utilities written for windows that depend on these .NET framework runtimes.
  8. Hmm my parents always told me to act my age...I am 26...but I still am not even to this day I guess because a board member just figured out how old I am I am building this machine so I can game, so I can run stuff that I use for work and also cause its very fast! Games I am talking about Crysis and all the new and nextgen games that will be coming out. And we ALL know how hard Crysis is on your system. For work, I am a J2EE developer and though Java is not the fastest language even this machine will be overkill for it. But I do need all that RAM so I can run all the main components of Oracle's SOA suite on my machine without running out of resources. That includes running Oracle XE that takes 1 gb RAM right away, running the SOA suite application server that takes another GB RAM, running the BAM server that should take another gig of RAM and the rest will be for the rest of the OS and the IDE etc. Also I dont buy machines every year and nor do I upgrade ever year so I figured its an expense but its not too bad since I will prob upgrade once every few years. Also I like having sort of the cutting edge stuff because it is fun to tinker around and play with. And the 30 inch screen is not to show off, its a productivity boost especially with all the windows I can leave open and I can tile the windows and thus navigate faster. But to drive that monitor I do need the powerful graphics card setup. If I could afford it I ask why not? I guess with age people's priorities change. I just want to game, watch movies, and do work so I think of this machine as my compuhometheaterwork machine And if you thought my machine was expensive you should check out my motorbike!
  9. Look what I found !!!!!!!!!!! http://www.tcmagazine.com/comments.php?id=17096&catid=2
  10. No. 780i working with Intel Penryn is a reality. Heck even with 680i it will be a reality. Intel just tweaked something between the ES and the retail versions whether on purpose or not I dont know. I dont care. All I care is that SLI with Penryn will work and it will according to the Asus tech because the boards are ready.
  11. Argh...oh well. I was intending on oclocking the FSB up to 400 at least anyway and bringing the multiplier down to 8 so I could have a 3.2 ghz oclocked CPU with the memory downlocked to 800 for 1:1. I am going to take solace in the fact that I couldnt have oclocked with that mobo...and just keep being patient...son of a......!
  12. Who's BIOS is that? Did you go to the Asus site? I would be mighty ticked off if they just released the Penryn BIOS and I just RMAed my mobo!
  13. Good suggestions but I already returned the mobo and I am getting a full refund back. The Asus tech support guy said I have to wait till Christmas at the worst case before I can get the Asus Striker 2 Formula mobo. It is a long wait and I wont be surprised if it becomes Jan before I get my mobo but I think after spending 6k on a computer I need to take it easy and not spend any more!!!!!!
  14. I actually waited till SP1 before I went to XP from Windows 98. Though I did love 98. Oh and since I dont have a mobo right now and my system is sitting in boxes...all I can do is look at stuff like this http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2007/11/3...deon_hd_3870/10 and imagine what my machine would be able to do....*sigh*
  15. Zxian you are correct that game performance NVidias drivers have caught up just about. There is still a bit of a delta and its only going to get better and better. There will be a time when Vista will be faster. I am about 75% sure of it. But its not about the games. IF you read that Mark Russinovich blog about all the problems that Vista has and the explanations of how they are fixing it...which is great IMO becaus they are fixing it, those are the problems I do not want to be affected by at all. I am sure with SP1 WHEN it comes out all that will be fixed. I will then read the reviews and see if SP1 made Vista better or not. If the answer is I will grab a copy of the Home or maybe the Business edition Vista and save some cash and go x64. Dont really need Ultimate edition since I dont write on my screen and all the other crap that it comes with. And then I will vLite the hell out of it. And then it is worthy of going on to my machine. Also it makes sense to get the Vista DVD that already has SP1 built into it than keep downloading it every time I reinstall or slipstreaming it into vLite. So, let´s wait till SP2 comes out for Vista . Exactly! I am saying Vista is not ready to be on my system ...yet! Keyword is yet! PS - I like this sort of bantering back and forth on the forums. Mods we are having an educated discussion here so please dont lock this thread! No one is taking it personally!
  16. You still dont get it do you Zxian? XP is faster than Vista right now. That was my argument. and I just took all that you said that were good about Vista and showed you that was not the case. That is why I am going with XP. The improvements are cosmetic in Vista. Pretty sparkly stuff. It just looks great on paper. ANd if UNIX would play games I would be using it now Thats why I have not installed Linux on my machine.
  17. It really does not matter if XP 64 bit was an afterthought or not. It is improved more so than XP and thats good enough for me. It does not matter Vista x64 was not an afterthought. Not a good enough argument. Also lets see...you said search functionality in Vista is great and a bonus to using it over XP Even in Xp I dont use it dont care for it dont need it. In fact I turn off Windows Indexing on all my machines. I know where the heck I stored my stuff. Useless performance sapping crap. So dont care. Newer explorer interface. I am doing fine with the current one thanks. Re written network stack has yet to prove itself. Its not like network performance has gotten any better. Rather it has gotten worse according to what i have read http://blogs.technet.com/MarkRussinovich/ Check out that site...you will see how many bugs Vista has and this is from a Microsoft MVP! Better stability you said next...hmm when the heck was the last time my XP install BSODed or crashed? Err cant remember. Here let me add some more 'pros' for Vista...uhh improved task scheduler? It is in fact so improved that if you read the 3rd article on the link I posted thats what happens haha. Aero...yeah that is brilliant and shiny and pretty and all that cool 3d stuff wow! What were the requirements for it again? Compiz? Beryl? What? For Linux and it can do it with a tenth of the hardware that you need for Aero?! Say it aint so! UAC...http://pcworld.about.com/od/longhorn/Two-step-Windows-Vista-UAC-hac.htm son of a ....! According to Mr. Mark Russinovich "However, Mark Russinovich, a Technical Fellow in Microsoft's Platform and Services Division, already answered all such criticisms back in February by explaining that UAC is not to be considered a security mechanism. Rather, it is a way of prompting developers to build more secure applications, he said. "Vista makes tradeoffs between security and convenience, and both UAC and Protected Mode IE have design choices that required paths to be opened in the IL wall for application compatibility and ease of use," he wrote."" Hmm I wonder how OS X and Linux have been doing it all these years! Oh right they are so unpopular that hackers dont try to hack them. hehe when was the last time I got a virus or got hacked in my XP install? Lets see...I honestly cant remember and i dont even run anti virus! DX 10 vs DX 9 hmm...http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/bioshock_directx10_performance/page7.asp this is just one article really but I get bored of posting long posts. So in conclusion I would like to say as I have stated before...XP is perfect for my uses especially since I give performance much more value over anything else. I know what I am doing on my machine so I dont need a nanny...I mean Vista for me. Vista does not suck. Its just a bit less optimized, a lot fatter (for no reason) and a bit slower than what I care for. And I have countered all that you posted.
  18. But I am putting XP 64 bit in. Just not Vista x64 yet. I am waiting for SP1 to be out, more driver optimizations to be out, more vLite performance and bugs to get squashed. Basically waiting for XP and Vista to be virtually on the same playing field before I go for it. My rig will be fast yes and it will have a great OS on it...XP 64. Just not Vista yet. That is not to say that I wont upgrade to Vista in the future...there is plenty of chance i will and by that time it will have benefited from plenty of optimizations just as XP has so far. I am in rush basically. 64 bit XP is prob what I am going to go with until it goes EOL or Windows 7 comes out or Vista becomes compelling enough because the performance delta in EVERY app is negligible and DX 10 games are just toooooooo enticing.
  19. Like I said in my post that yes Vista has usability advantages but I could care less. Performance is of higher priority to me and you can look at gaming benchmarks that will prove XP is still faster than Vista whether it be because of drivers DX 10 etc etc. Bottomline Vista has better usability? Sure. Is Vista slower? Yes. Performance is more important for me than usability. If I wanted usability I would have gone the OS X route.
  20. I just hope I dont have to wait too long...but in the meantime....http://exo-blog.blogspot.com/2007/11/update-re-testing-vista-w2gb-ram-office.html
  21. The latest ati is good for a midrange card. It is nowhere near what Nvidia has in terms of the GTX or the Ultra. Hence no reason for a new gpu setup. Also in SLI every game out there barring Crysis which has very nacent SLI support and drivers coming out for SLI every few week and a forthcoming SLI patch for it...surely there is no need for a new graphics card right now. Nvidia knows that.
  22. I spoke with the Asus support and looks like the Asus Striker 2 Formula is the next badass board and there is already a beta BIOS on their site. The Asus guy also said that some European shops already have the cards in their hands. We should be getting it as well by Christmas. I guess I am going to return my mobo to Newegg and wait it out for the 780i version which is guaranteed Penryn support.
  23. Nvidia had said there will be no high end refreshes soon so I doubt that is a legit picture.
  24. Yes sir tried with one stick of RAM no go. I think the problem is more serious in that the 45 nm Penryn is not compatible with the 680i Nvidia chipset. I googled that yesterday and that seems to be the general consensus. I do not know why I am surprised considering this IS Intel and Nvidia we are talking about. Nvidia would not let Intel license SLI technology. Intel now decides to screw with Nvidia that is the consensus. There is talk about bios updates being released for the 680i chipsets but it all seems pretty vague at this time. What I do not understand is why Intel would withold some microcode updates from Nvidia because, they are saying that CPUs would work with the 780i chipsets which are nothing more than 680i + PCI express 2.0 + 1 more PCI Express lane? Anyway I got my monitor and it is a thing of beauty. This crap has definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. What I also do not understand is that all the reviewers of the Penryn and the Asus Striker mobos never said anything about the motherboards not being compatible. I guess the the best thing I can do is give Asus a call.
