  1. Kernel source code from sp1. SP2 kernel was more like windows server 2003 kernel. Many of sp1 security issues were fixed on sp2 (many were ones nt4 had) and on security updates so many attacks may fail.
  2. For me using xp is not just the internet. It is lot more too. I got adobe photoshop, gimp2, paintdotnet, illustrator for photo editing. Then pinnacle 12, adobe premiere, avidemux for video editing. For listening radio/scaning radio freqs I got SDRsharp with RTL-SDR dongle. For tv I got happauge wintv soloHD DVB-C/DVB-T/DVB-T2 tuner that I use with DVBviewer to watch/record free tv channels. Then I got lot of films/videos/music/other contect on my hdd and windvd to play ones I got on dvd. For remote management of computers I got putty (latest build). Then I got old visual studio, pythonXP, microsoft XDX, symbian SDK for coding. For web I use mypal browser by Feodor2 and for email mailnews and for chatting escargot msn messenger 7.5 trough httpsproxy. I am sending this post from that xp system. For word editing office xp and openoffice. For pdf view sumatrapdf, then to sync data off phone nokia pc suite Then got plenty of games (half-life 1, 2, ms flight sim 2004, sims3, toca 3, quake 3, doom3, gt legends, dirt for starters) and all of my games controllers works on xp. I cannot see lot more things I would have to do on pc. So no XP is not going anywhere soon on me. And for some claims I found online. 1. XP will get flooded with viruses when connected to internet: well possibly will get attacked if connected to internet directly with public IP like ADSL broadband did back in 2005 here. 80% of computers are not connected to internet rather to lan that redirects requests to gateway on router and to internet. I got NAT and proper network level firewall (no upnp) and did not have that issue. I also use up to date browser with noscript 2. XP cannot support sata hdd or over 137gb hdd: yes xp cannot see more than 137gb if you got pre sp1 xp and no services packs at all. For sata if on achi mode need have sata controller driver I got 2x1tb hard drives on xp at SATA mode (both formatted at setup) and zero issues 3. XP cannot utilise multicore cpu: XP home edition is limited to 2 physical cpu/cores and pro to 4 physical cpu/cores. Multi cpu and core systems were out way before even vista came out. I have seen xp workstation with 4x pentium 3 xeons long ago. I got quad core phenom x4 945 and all cores works well on multicore enabled application. 4. XP is not optimised to fast computers: how do you define fast system? And it is not xp that utilises all system resources to it own use. Apps do and I have used lot of cpu intensive apps without notable slowdown compared win10 for example on same pc if no sure test it and do not believe all FUD they spread online.
  3. Do you have performance issues? If no then depends
  4. I got 2gb used on idle out 32gb that is completely normal. Why windows vista or 7 shows higher ram usage is because how task manager works. Windows preserves ram to mostly used softwares (superfetch) and some other things and frees up from it when needed. It just way win7 works. XP did different way (on it I got 150-300mb idle). Unless you got huge performance problems I would not worry about it
  5. actually set it to no proxy how you run it now? On second pc or in same?
  6. I got 100mb/s down 10mb/s up cable modem connection for 10 euros per month with public IP. It is offered all renters on many areas in finland. Then 4 euros for unmetered 200kb/s mobile connection on phone (basic package).
  7. are you getting invalid password and need hit login prompt multiple times before login? If yes it is related to buggy tls on xp. You can fix it with proxhttpsproxy. Either run it locahost or at LAN. Do you use it laptop or desktop and do you only use it at home?
  8. Do not overthink. My way is this. For most use cases expect programming with python I use windows 7. For python I use linux mint LTS and in my opinion it was easier confgure python on linux. No need download installer just use apt. VMWARE 15 is fine for many years and I got bare metal ESXI hypervisor for any other uses with virtualisation. It can be used over any somewhat decent browser. Also you can get limited noncommercial licence for it free by making my vmware account. Also I can use new vmware tools down to vmware 7. If you do not want win10 consider linux and win7 dualboot. Just need second ssd and grub does rest. LTS is non rolling release of mint. And installing mint wont need lot configure. Just install it and depending gpu you can be good to go out of box (amd gpu). It also wont harm your win7 install
  9. kernel mode driver update number is KB2685811 and user mode KB2685813. If you can access windows update you got sha2 update. If you got no those two just click links (ones with kb number)
  10. Any new one. Titan RTX, RTX 3090, 3080 etc got drivers. Also amd new gpu drivers for 6000 series lists win7 as support. I recommend install sha2 signature update and kernel and user mode driver updates for win7. Nvidia driver need sha update Good. I though you were advanced power user. You know security well then
  11. Have you enabled wireless network support on server manager? Open up server manager go to add roles and features. Skip roles part on feature tab select wireless network support. By default windows server got wireless network support disabled. Also after enabling it make sure wireless adapter is enabled on bios and windows device manager
  12. Windows 7 32bit will be fine on that netbook with bit of tweaking. First disable automatic system updates (never check for updates). For gma there is modified intel driver that will improve performance (not going link it here since may break msfn rules). I have slower netbook with gma 950 and windows 7 32bit runs well on 2gb of ram, aero enabled. For browser I use Roytam1 Newmoon that is basically palemoon and only sites causing issues to me is youtube thanks to new layout. You can improve performance by forcing mobile user agent that renders sites on lightweight mobile version
  13. Sounds exactly my problem. I really tried enjoy using win10 as main os but kept having issues constantly. I do not want os force updates tom. I do not want worry every system update breaking apps or drivers. I got few laptops that are unable run win10 properly anymore due drivers. Also win10 is mess on changing settings. On windows 7 I had control panel (basic settings) and Group policy editor (advanced windows/app settings). Win10 got two control panel and need change between them and whole UI feels like touch screen, it got ads. I downgraded windows 7 and never looked back again I have desired run windows 7 as long as can which is quite long considering even windows 95 is somewhat usable today with some tweaking despite being over 25 years old. I use firefox esr version since will likely recieve updates longer than rapid release. I got linux mint on dualboot with it. Nothing wrong on using windows 7 or older. You do not need always get "the latest and greatest" os. And windows 7 is useful still atleast on me. I got windows 10 on non networked vm for some purposes so no need dualboot or restore image For security side of things most sayings about viruses will flood win7 system are FUD. I am not saying it is risk free but viruses wont just attack since todays security is made on network level. Back in XP days ADSL/ISDN/Dialup operators gave every computer public IP address. That increased risk of attack by lot and I have gotten lot of worms. Nowadays you many times wont even get one public IP (behind operator level NAT many times) and generally you are behind router firewall and NAT. You just need good network firewall between your local area network and internet. Most modern routers got sufficent ones and something like openwrt or pfsense will improve it a lot. Also disable router remote management, disable UPNP, disable VPS for wifi and change wifi and admin panel passwords and you are good to go. I also got pihole that got constantly updating blacklist of malicious domains. And for browser security I use firefox with ublock origin and noscript. Noscript saved me many times from attacks. If want harden on os level I would use Comodo antivirus HIPS feature or OSarmor (only if you know or want learn how setup process rules). Also keep backup of important files on external hdd. Then most important part of security is use of common sense. No av or update will protect from end user mistakes always. All that being said, if you want keep windows 7 go ahead and keep it. You are one of many users and atleast on MSFN you will get help if get issues with it. Windows 7 will have long life on power users who are not afraid to tweak their OS.
  14. Ok. Seems things have changed on gmail. Old way no longer works this mehtod will work. I just tested. To setup app password (I assume you got 2fa enabled go to account settings>security>application passwords. On pic proof it works. Cencored my name and email address for obvious reason but can see sent with attachment. here what you need configure imap (incoming mail address imap.gmail.com port 993) and smpt (outgoing mail address smtp.gmail.com port 465). TLS (port 587) wont work anymore for outgoing mail so you need use ssl port. I know pics are finnish but I got finnish Office XP installed. If you got any problems let me know
  15. They may have had corrected issue on newer processors. I have only played with windows 7 up to AMD Ryzen 2xxx series and Intel Coffee lake cpu only which both had same issue so cannot say for sure
  16. I have tried multiple driver versions and issue is either on mainboard or agp gpu. NT4 works on pci e variant of same gpu. I guess driver is not compatible with agp
  17. If it is old hdd drive electronic might be failing. I have had multiple older hard drives doing that. Took forever to boot and kept locking up even on fresh install of xp even with 4gb of ram. All tests showed drive was fine and was not defragmented. I replaced drive electronics on one and issue went away. For easier way I would buy new hdd unless got second broken hdd that is exactly same as original and you know how swap it. Also like WalksInSilence you may need more ram.
  18. You might want disable some of power management options like pci power saving or you may experience blackscreening. I turned off all power saving could and problem went away
  19. I use desktop shortcut to shutdown my computer that taskkills steam automatically then shut pc down. Same problem as on you, I tried force app hung time down, but it was not fixing issue. It eventually turns off otherwise but takes few minutes.
  20. I disagree with this one. I got athlon64 that lacks sse3 but does very decently as guest pc with windows 7. Modern sites produce no issues with it (expect new youtube layout). Some peoples even use win95 today and I see no problem on that.
  21. Thank you. That was exactly what I was looking for
  22. You can easily fix it by going to view settings on windows explorer (not ie) and selecting browse folders on same window instead of launch folder on seperate windows
  23. Did you got it work? Also should install internet explorer 8 and use pos ready update trick to install TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 support. You can download update needed from Windows update catalog. It is called Cumulative Update for Internet Explorer 8 for WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4316682). Just click download and download one for your language. This is needed due Gmail cannot verify password using ie6 and tls. It says site cannot be viewed otherwise. You need do that auth step too and then Outlook should log you in. Also you may need update root certifcates and have latest updates to outlook 2003
  24. I would say 8/10 for fully patched vanilla windows 2000 and 9/10 to one with extended kernel. I am running win2000 vanilla on Fujitsu Siemens lifebook c1320 (2.00ghz Pentium M, 1gb ram, gma 900, 14" 1280x800 display 160gb hdd achi mode). For browser I use Palemoon 26.5 for win2000 (from this forum) with noscript and ublock origin and until lately it could play youtube. I got codecs so can play all of my movie files on it and browser web wirelessly (boingo client to wpa2), for games I got lot older titles that some needed appcompat tool. What is funny back in day I said I will never play games on win2000 since it cannot run them properly. How wrong I was on that. And for messaging I can use escargot MSN messenger 4.5, for office older openoffice and office xp. That is just surface scratch what all I have done on vanilla win2000. For non vanilla I am currently looking create core2duo/nvidia 8xxx config to win2k. Only tried extended kernel on vmware where had promising results
