  1. OK, so it's not complicated at all it turns out, at least if it's fine having Luna at the logon screen. Maybe that's how it was; I thought it wasn't always, but o/w this works: 1. Do NOT disable themes (make sure it is enabled) 2. Enable the GPO to "force a specific theme" and leave the field blank to choose Classic theme. 3. Using bginfo, you can have it write wallpaper information on logon using a login script. That takes care of the blue background + anything else that might be desired. Now, as soon as the user logs in, the dialog box changes from Luna to Classic immediately, and it stays that way until logout.
  2. @Dave-H Hi, Dave! Thanks for having this thread up. I haven't encountered this issue yet but I'd like to avoid it. I have an Office 2010 folder with updates through February 2020 all slipstreamed into it - only because I haven't bothered to update through now yet, I'll probably wait until October and then refresh the updates and remove old ones. I've gone back a few pages and it seems like MSO.DLL in the newest updates is OK in XP now. So, as long as I am using reasonably up to date updates slipstreamed into my Office 2010, will there not be any issues? It would be a shame to have to avoid updates since 2018, since they are all cumulative, but it sounds like they are all working now; are there issues with this approach? Thanks!
  3. I heard that there is a registry key that can force the Windows Classic theme systemwide in Windows XP. Does anyone know more about this? I'd like to force the classic theme systemwide so it looks like Server 2003 or Windows 2000 - no Luna anywhere, even at the logon screen. I remember our school district had them set up like this way back in the day, so it seems to be possible. Either it would turn from Luna to classic as soon as a logon occured, and the dialog box would change immediately, or it would be classic right from boot to begin with.
  4. Here's my guide that I've been following - much thanks to win32 for the help: https://w2k.phreaknet.org/guide/ O2K7 stuff is optional but do do the riched20.dll swap
  5. Huh? But I thought you said "And WildBill stopped working on his extended kernel files years ago, so they don't have nearly as much functions as BWC" Any chance they can be reconciled so that one has all the functions? It's probably more complicated than that it sounds like, I've never done any kernel patching!
  6. Oh, that's just a script that does just those two automatically. I kind of forgot about that. That's because those are the 2 programs I use. This is the script that could be run as a startup script to auto-update those programs, I think. I just use Install.bat though. MailNews is listed in the main script under "BOC" I believe
  7. Gotcha, I didn't know there were other kernels out there. What is the advantage over those over BWC these days?
  8. Yeah, I guess I don't really care for any of that, to be honest. Only thing from W10 that has been nice so far is the improved Snipping Tool with the "delay" function, which I have used many times now. Unfortunately, I tried your earlier advice but was not successful in porting it back. The only thing W10 really has going for it so far, I guess! Isn't that the sketchy ReactOS thing? Or something 3rd party? Really, I'd all be interested in doing is using Office 2010 on XP. That's what I did back in the day, both that and 2007. I could probably install it without problematic updates after they started breaking XP, but it would be nice to just have the latest copy come October 2020.
  9. YouTube seems to work more or less fine in New Moon 28 and Firefox 52.9 ESR on Windows 2000 with Extended Kernel. Presumably, would work in XP, too.
  10. ExportTableTester gets flagged by MSFT as a virus, how funny! I'm a bit dumb here, but is this copying kernel32 from Windows Vista or Windows 7? I'm assuming if this were done system wide, it would all break? Does this work even for portable programs, as long as the exe is in a certain folder with this? What other issues?? I really love all these extended kernel projects! Perhaps we can get projects for XP and W7 (eventually) started as well, as more software becomes W7+ or W10 only
  11. Bit confused here, I am running the latest version of New Moon 28 on W2K with no issues. W2K x64?... I must be missing something!
  12. Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I don't trust these 3rd party software vendors anymore than I trust Microsoft now. Pale Moon, maybe, but the official InterLink doesn't support Windows XP. So a lot of what Roytam1 forks *is* pretentious software. Yeah, I've noticed that! I've put a ZIP download up here: https://w2k.phreaknet.org/ - download link is right at the top I don't take most of the credit since I just forked it, but I fixed all the issues I observed with it so it should be tenable in a "real" deployment. Must be run as admin, but programs will work for all users afterwords. No guarantees but it's worked well for me so please let me know if there are issues!
  13. Personally, I just use the Roytam1 programs, always. Even though W7 is supported now, in the future it might not be, so I just started using them there as well to sort of "future proof". Since the Roytam programs always work, it just simplified inventory for me since it's the same program on all operating systems, back through W2K, whereas the others are not, and my installer solution works quite nicely with all of them.
  14. Yeah, Outlook is great but it has some weaknesses. In particular, it's pretty bad at actually doing email. Message quoting is something that is basically broken in Outlook. You can't use HTML email at all, it must be plain text, and even then it has massive issues. Numerous people have complained about terrible message formatting when sent this way. No issues in MailNews. Here's an example from O2K7: https://w2k.phreaknet.org/o2k7/ I use Outlook for calendar and contacts, sometimes reading, almost never for composing or replying to email, unless it's the Exchange account which I use mostly for calendaring/contacts these days and "read only" email. TB/derivatives have turned out to be much better at supporting the email standards, so MailNews just works better. Initially it was annoying to have both open all the time, but I've kind of gotten used to it; sometimes I'll close Outlook after the workday is over and there's nothing left on my calendar for the day. On the other hand, Outlook obviously does Exchange, which TB doesn't. Effectively, both programs are required so I've just made peace with that. Yup, exactly! I tried TB itself out and had some bad experiences with it, though that might have been XP + TB and not TB itself. But it sort of went the way that FF did, so MailNews has been much nicer. At one point on this site I think I found an unofficial installer script for the Roytam programs. Problem was it didn't quite work right, since it assumed UAC would always be disabled and only admin users would ever use it, plus it didn't work cross-NT platforms. I added some patches so it works as a proper installer now - works from W2K through W10, and installs programs for all users (technically portably still, but in the Program Files directory) and adds desktop and start menu shortcuts in the appropriate places. Just used it to put New Moon on W2K. If the program is already installed, the installer just overwrites the files, so if the batch script were a startup script via GPO, the roytam programs would all get updated automatically on reboot. I haven't done this, though; I just manually update once in a while. In the future I think it would be nice to mirror the repository locally so if I did this update mechanism it would pull locally, not over the Internet.
  15. Oh, that was it! Then there's Chromium for W2K, which is version 54, and still has SSL issues so it doesn't seem to work. I was doing some testing earlier in W2K. Apparently, with Firefox 52.9, it seems to think (or maybe it really does). As a webmaster, it came to my attention recently that apparently phasing out TLS 1/1.1 is a thing. I wanted to look into whether that might be problematic for W2K/XP. Based on my testing, it seems now. Could be for 9x but I don't care too much about that. So it looks like requirements for TLS 1.2 should be OK, unless I've missed something. Actually, I don't theme my New Moon at all, I just use it as is. I'm kind of a vanilla guy, I use KernelEx on W2K but I usually like things themed the default way. I use Microsoft Exchange for my calendars, but I have a calendar feed subscription on those published so they are read only in MailNews. Ironically Outlook doesn't support multiple calendars in the righthand pane natively but TB/derivatives do, which is a laugh. When I need to edit stuff in my calendar I'll open up Outlook 2010 on W7+ for that. Can't remember quite where it came from, I think it was from reddit which I don't usually use, but it showed up in a search result. I saved it in a folder called "IE8_aero" so maybe look for that? I honestly did it more to see what it was like in Windows 10; I haven't gotten rid of but I rarely use that Firefox so that's mainly why. I was having some issues with a few sites in Iron 70 which is why I looked into FF, but then those sites started behaving again, so I forgot about it. Main reason being is that New Moon, Firefox, etc. all use more memory than Iron. Iron seems to use the least memory, except maybe Internet Explorer in certain scenarios.
  16. I actually played with that a few times, I found one userChrome that made FF look like IE8. I'm not a fan of the modern Firefoxes much myself though. I use New Moon on Windows 2000 and sometimes on W7 as well. Iron 70 and W7+. Once in a blue moon I get a notification in Iron 70 my browser is outdated, but I've never had functionality issues. More up to date than IE11 probably so I figured not much harm done there. Isn't Advanced Chrome that sketchy program from China? I'm not set on one browser necessarily, but I prefer the original Chrome/Iron when using a Chromium browser, not really interested in a different fork. Also, just wanted to throw out MailNews works fine even in W2K, so it should work in Vista even without the new extended kernel, considering it works natively in XP.
  17. This is most excellent! Even on Windows 10 systems, as well as Windows 7, I use Iron (fork of Chrome) 70. They removed the old UI option after that, so I refuse to use anything Chromium newer than 70. It's a year or two old now but most things still work fine.
  18. That is truly awesome to hear @SIW2 I know you can't share the ISO, but is there any way you could share a step-by-step guide of this? I think yours is probably the best way to do this!
  19. It did! I haven't patched anything since then, since it's a manual process for me. When Office 2010 support expires in October, I'll probably revisit this and update it so that all patches are included.
  20. I fixed this all a while back. I ran the installer as admin. The problem was standard users could not use the program. I fixed the script so that standard users can use the programs, now, among other things. I disable UAC on my system for standard users so Run As Admin is blocked by Group Policy.
  21. @win32 Well, I can't figure it out then. Any ideas why updates suddenly started failing when they did? I'm sure they can be manually installed so comparability can't be the reason. In any case, what's the best/easiest way to "slipstream" the rest of the updates, considering that I... can't? I want an ISO that's up to date through 2020, with the Ultimate Extras, but I've only gotten as far as mid-2016 with no Ultimate Extras. Not sure if it's easier to mess with scripts, or use DISM imagex, or what... Also, the stupid IE9 update didn't work. I've still got IE7! Ga!
  22. @Vistapocalypse @Jody Thornton @win32 I've been (in the background) the past few weeks methodically testing vLite installations by narrowing down the permutations, In the end, I have been able to determine with complete certainity which updates are slipstreamable and which are not. Here are my findings. It took more than 29 test ISOs to get to this point (I didn't start counting until maybe a dozen in), so hopefully this will spare others the trouble: UPDATES YOU CAN SLIPSTREAM: Notice how after some point in April 2016, updates can no longer be slipstreamed. Every single update after that fails. Except for the Internet Explorer 9 "update" it seems (don't actually know if it works though). Also, Ultimate Updates can NOT be slipstreamed. Didn't try any 2008 Server updates, but I'm guessing they would also fail. Any ideas as to why? My only idea is perhaps updates were signed in some special way starting in 2016 so they can't be integrated into a SP2 ISO? Anyways, here you go... if you use vLite to slipstream, this gives you an Ultimate x64 ISO that is 4.31 GB (from the vanilla SP2 AIO ISO): Volume in drive E is New Volume Volume Serial Number is 23. I figured it out! The reason a UAC prompt pops up when you click Make New Moon the default (helper.exe) is so it can add itself as a program to "Default programs" in Windows. It's not there by default. Once an admin does this, it's there for all users. Then, standard users can make it the default or not at their call. So easy workaround: make programs the default as admin when installing, and there should be no issues down the line.
  24. No worries, it's all pretty self-explanatory batch. It's not hard to decipher. I mostly left what was there intact, modified a few things, and added others. I also forked my own fork to create a version that silently installs MailNews and the appropriate version of New Moon. In theory, I could use Group Policy to add that as a startup script and it would automatically update the browser everyday!
  25. I wouldn't worry about it anymore. I was able to successfully fork your scripts to do everything I needed. Here is my CHANGELOG: echo 1) Support for multiuser installation and use echo - To this end, shortcuts are now created in Public Desktop. echo - Backwards compatible with NT 5.x echo 2) Program execution by non-administrative users allowed echo 3) Shortcuts also created in Start Menu echo - Backwards compatible with NT 5.x echo 4) Updated information about MailNews in the HELP echo 5) Updated installer tip: "XP/vista" now "XP/Vista/7" echo 6) The following shortcut was renamed: "Interlink" to "MailNews" If you or anyone is interested I can post the modified code, but I'm guessing most others are fine with how it is now. Gotcha. I tried 7Z but it didn't work. I just left it as a bunch of files, works for me. I did have to comment out the stuff that expected it to be in a tmp dir and deleted everything post-install. Don't ask how I found out it did that...
