  1. Have you tried a user agent override? You could also try application verifier/fcwin2k on the browser so that it thinks it's on a newer OS.
  2. I managed to install VMWare Player 3.1.3 (based on Workstation 7.x) using the extended kernel 2.8/2.9 sometime ago. You can use NNN4NT5 or a couple of scripts @blackwingcat includes with the extended kernel (in "Windows 2000 Power Pack" start menu folder or %systemroot%\WINNT) to make all of the msis think they're running on XP. Then I ran his VMware script and it worked, though there wasn't much advantage over Workstation 6.5.x, as I corrupted W7 x86\Vista x64 VMs trying to enable Aero, then bluescreened the host when trying to install W7 x64. However, it appears he was luckier and got Windows 8 to work with Player 3.1.6 http://blog.livedoor.jp/blackwingcat/archives/1924659.html However, he didn't make any scripts for player 4.x/workstation 8.x and beyond. I tried to install Workstation 10 and most of the services would not start (if they even installed), rendering it useless. http://blog.livedoor.jp/blackwingcat/archives/1544432.html
  3. In my case, I started setup, then once it got to the "welcome to setup" window, I searched my partition for openssl.exe then deleted it. That was it.
  4. Yes, in the case of Windows 10 x64: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kernel_Patch_Protection
  5. And another one from television, namely a fuzzy image of the unmistakable Luna guiding fire fighters to an emergency in St. Louis, MO, as seen on the August 19 episode of the American TV series Live Rescue: And here's a bonus sighting, one that could get me banned: What would the world do without Windows NT 5.x?
  6. hmm. I thought it was strange that I was the only one facing this persistent issue. Then I remembered another stability issue where WOW32 programs would crash whenever I'd click on their menus; that was the result of a program that I loaded at startup. (PowerTweaks; filename is mmm.exe, included with one of the win2k slipstream packs floating around) There are two others that I usually load on every win2k machine I use; Virtual Clone Drive and Unlocker. I don't have much use for the latter, so I'll try disabling it. Though there haven't been many crashes lately, and the two this week have been while browsing MSFN as opposed to YouTube.
  7. Earlier today, I was watching a Weather Network-produced segment on CBC News Network and noticed their fondness for Windows Server 2003 (R2?): It It is strange, considering that everything else on The Weather Network seems to run on 7 or 10. or at least the stuff like the touchscreen used by the on-camera personalities.
  8. I am not entirely sure what information could be of use to you, but here is the log file with about 20-25 browser crashes over the past week: https://mega.nz/#!U90A1YJY!p6b3hDjRIRLB7PNSlNT-WSpMcqn-0aXjFIh1oGCj-F4 For reference, almost every stack trace seems to show lstrcmpiW being called.
  9. I patched whilst web browsing. YouTube crashed not long after but I think that the older version was still cached; Dr Watson didn't make a dump. However, after restarting Serpent I got 5.5 hours of crash-free video viewing, which is very promising. I'll keep you informed of any issues that arise, but I think you've fixed one of my few remaining pet peeves when running win2k. Thank you!!
  10. Yes, for the second crash: ----> Stack Back Trace <----* FramePtr ReturnAd Param#1 Param#2 Param#3 Param#4 Function Name 24FFFF78 002A62A4 02BD12C0 D47F2A17 006F0072 00720067 !RtlEnterCriticalSection [omap] 24FFFFB4 7C57B3BC 08C76938 006F0072 00720067 08C76938 !crt_at_quick_exit [omap] 24FFFFEC 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 !lstrcmpiW [omap]
  11. Yes, there is one: Hopefully the day when the only viable Windows OS is 10 never comes.
  12. My XP x64/2003 x86 have it, and they don't have Office installed. Installed Office 2003 on Windows 2000 and got it there. Handwriting/speech input relies on it.
  13. That was directed more towards the Vista users (especially if they dump DX9), though if they stick with DX9 (or use DX10/11 in a way wined3d can handle), application verifier or fcwin2k may work (caveat being W7-dependent functions of course). I did mention two such programs in the "last software for XP thread".
  14. For several months, I've had an issue with random crashes when using YouTube on all of roytam1's browsers as well as MyPal. These crashes only happen in win2k. I have assembly dumps from two separate crashes: function: RtlEnterCriticalSection 77f87ee0 648b0d18000000 mov ecx,fs:[00000018] fs:00000018=???????? 77f87ee7 8b542404 mov edx,[esp+0x4] ss:1e779e1b=???????? 15. The best you can hope for is to use Application Verifier on the desktop client to fake Windows 7 once it starts to block XP/Vista. However, they may take the opportunity to recompile it with dependencies on DX 11.1 (Windows 8 and up, partially backported to 7) or other Windows 7-specific functions. You may still have a glimmer of hope in the former case, if these DX 11.1-specific libraries can be copied over to Vista with no dependency issues, as that's what happened to later iterations of DX9 with so-called XP-exclusive components; they work in Windows 2000 even without the extended kernel. All I can say is, keep your copy of dependency walker handy.
  16. Some interesting data out of Armenia. I wonder how this happened: https://gs.statcounter.com/windows-version-market-share/desktop/armenia/#monthly-201708-201907 Probably subject to a high margin of error with anomalies like the ~7% bump for Vista and 8 earlier in the period, but the trend is clear; Windows 7 users are switching back.
  17. Another remedy to this problem is switching to extended Windows 2000 + Office 2000 (but not XP or later)!!! No msctf in any of my win2k installations! Unfortunately the chance of a backported patch seems quite low, especially with the change in the underlying component that powers CTF from LPC to ALPC with Vista; the way in which CTF is implemented in XP seems quite different, as the ctfhookprocworker function referenced in the blog post doesn't exist in XP's user32.dll.
  18. I can't find a browser named "FireSky", just some web hosting companies. There's a Firefly browser, but it was last updated in 2013. Even Pampa Browser is getting long in the tooth, with the last update on April 22, 2018. It would crash almost immediately after execution on both 2000 and 2003 machines with .NET Framework 4.0 installed, even with no missing dependencies in 2003 (with the exception of ieshims.dll, which doesn't exist in my 2003 or XP x64 systems, and is a delay-load module anyway). It also bundles an "extra" component, a "YouTube Manager". Mozglue.dll in that browser is numbered 45.0.1.6190, so it appears to be a FF 45 ESR fork; nothing groundbreaking.
  19. You may want to try NNN4NT5 instead, which will make the OS as a whole identify as XP, as opposed to tricking only one out of possibly multiple bootstrapped installers. That helped me install 360 Extreme Explorer. note that it will still be very broken compared to XP but not crash quickly.
  20. I discovered that QEMU 2.7 (last version with official support for XP) works well in win2k. I installed Windows 95 earlier and all keyboard/mouse input was successful. No crashes either
  21. IDA Pro 7.0 Freeware, a disassembler, works on XP x64 (no x86 version). However, the PE subsystem is set to 6.0 which means you will have to use a tool like blackwingcat's PEMaker to change it before running it. https://www.hex-rays.com/products/ida/support/download_freeware.shtml x86 users can use 5.0 freeware, though I have only tested it in extended win2k, not XP itself: http://web.archive.org/web/20160419045730/https://hex-rays.com/products/ida/support/download_freeware.shtml
  22. Anyway it looks like browserss is incorrect with regards to the OS requirements of Sputnik; the official site (https://browser.sputnik.ru/#personal) claims Windows 7 and up. Torch browser is still in the running, as it does officially claim to support XP/Vista (https://torchbrowser.com/faq) It does have a lot of stuff integrated into it which does not suite me well though. UPDATE: I just downloaded the current offline installer for Torch Browser, version 69.0.0.1674, dated 2019-07-08. Ran the installer off a USB drive to my laptop with Server 2003 (no Vista machines here, unfortunately) and it failed to copy any files to the SSD. So I opened up the installer with 7zip, then hunted through \$R1\$_11_\pack.exe\chrome.packed.7z\chrome.7z\Chrome-bin to find the browser. It wouldn't load because of the missing API AcquireSRWLockExclusive. The good news is that it is included in Vista! As do all of the other missing dependencies.
  23. Yes, though the site is a load of popover junk: http://techgenix.com/DisableWindowsScriptingHostWSH/
  24. Most of the browers on that list were last updated in 2015/16, but I found some obscure ones that have been updated recently and claim to support XP (Vista): http://browserss.ru/qutebrowser.html http://browserss.ru/superbird.html http://browserss.ru/torch-browser.html http://browserss.ru/sputnik-brauzer.html Everything else is too old or for 7 and up Please note that the giant green "skachat" button will not lead you to the desired browser and will download something else called "Elements". Oddly enough, what appears to be a link to the installer (for example, http://browserss.ru/assets/sputnik_browser_4.1.2811.0.exe) leads you to a 404 message.
  25. I debugged 86box, build 1837 in Windows 2000 and Windows 2003. These are the calls that were made when keyboard input was sent to the application. Direct3D 9 rendering was used in both cases (keyboard input was still broken with the other rendering options): Windows 2000 (not working): LoadLibraryExW("C:\86boxopt\86Box.exe", 0x00000000, LOAD_WITH_ALTERED_SEARCH_PATH) called from "USER32.DLL" at address 0x77E1E4B4. LoadLibraryExW("C:\86boxopt\86Box.exe", 0x00000000, LOAD_WITH_ALTERED_SEARCH_PATH) returned 0x00400000. Windows 2003 (working): LoadLibraryA("user32.dll") called from "D3D9.DLL" at address 0x4E048847. LoadLibraryA("user32.dll") returned 0x77380000. GetProcAddress(0x77380000 [USER32.DLL], "DisableProcessWindowsGhosting") called from "D3D9.DLL" at address 0x4E048859 and returned 0x773C92BB. So, it won't be very easy to backport this functionality from the looks of it, if the completely differing behaviour is a clue. I do know that DisableProcessWindowsGhosting is not implemented in the extended kernel.
