Hmm, i spend today lots of times with Window 98SE drivers hell. I wasnt able to make Intel 1000 GT Desktop adapter working (device start problem) and Soundcard (AC97) problem - in device manager is card ok, but no playback device, in directX error 88780078, even usb sound card is installed but cant be used. I even updated Bios of NIC and Sata controller - no change. At the end of day i said for myself, hey i could be worse so i starting messing with new version of Sata patch, i did lots of thing but still not DVD rom even on Sil controller, result is only that i have lots of controllers which i cant remove. I dont know why but after still messing or because i have completely disabled IDE controller in BIOS - now i have IDE controller in Enhanced mode and IDE.. 2 Sata devices in Autodetect settings, but is strange network card now magically working - i didnt do any HW change and there wasnt any resource conflict.. How is juct in the Safe mode i can see my Samsung DVD device all the time, when i remove it, is redetected. I also using Magic Iso virtual drive, i even tried to uninstall it. In other OSes all HW works fine. I love games but i really hate this system, is better that Messing with AmigaOS, but its still hell, i would be glad for any help.

ragnargd - thanks for reply. Well for me IDE is only for start, i every time hated IDE because of 133 MB/s limitation for all PCI devices and drives. BTW you know any good disc benchmark for Win98 - CrystalDiskMark - seems to show some error numbers - like 5 000 MB/s etc.. Could someone compare speed of this chipset IDE with generic drivers and these is Rloews patch? Could you direct me to some more info about realtek Dos driver? I didnt count on that integrated NIC would work, but i wont to try it, it would be bonus. Intel - i assumed that if exist driver for chipset, card will be work independently on if is PCI or PCI-E, because driver exist - i was probably wrong, i primary bought card for other system, so no many wasted. I dont have any ATI PCI-E card compatibile with Win9x i looked for some but i never found any X8xx card with passive cooling (at least in theory, i dont mind add 1 super Silent Noctua as in case of Geforce 7950GT) i have some unraid virtual machine, with passthrough of G7950 GT and its working fine without patch. Soundcard - im unlucky, i have Audigy SE (SB0570) - i one without Win98 drivers, i wonder Realtek HD is most common card, there is not any driver to emulate AC97 or SB with it?

You are right i have found new version of patch elsewhere on HDD - from 2015, i remember that we communicated, i have found some purge controller script. I dont need to have Optical drive on primary controller - i think that sata is ignoring this PATA - master / slave logic, i just i have 2 Sata ports and i need use them both - one for SSD and one for Sata DVD writer. But i dont have ATA018 a have i thing versin ATA104 or something like that. Could you resend me pleas new version of Sata patch? I dont care about SIL3512 if would DVD writer work on oboard sata port - i would gladly remove this controller about of PC, i have their driver but i combination with my present config - it causing freezes during boot - so for now i dont install drivers for it and im fine. ----------- Now i have stupid problems with adress conficts between motherboards resources (DMA controller) and Network or Sound card, this HW configuration worked fine, i redetected HW maybe 5 times, without this confict.. But now is conflicted, i neven know how to effectively solve this stupid problem or i forgot it. Could you help me pleas?

Im using Autoruns, there is Drivers tab - here is can see all installed drivers, when you delete some old app or change hardware, there are usually ghosts.. There special apps like GhostBuster, DriverView which for deletion of these ghosts.. And for Nvidia, AMD and Intel there is Driver uninstaller. About backup, Erunt looks nice for backup, but i want how recovery works when is current installation in nonbootable state. Ce recovery used for other installation than is actually booted? Or restore is just about replace files - so i can restore it just from Linux boot usb?

Hello, i quite often have to edit drivers section of autoruns - remove ghost driver of old devices and software - which werent properly untiled i do it through Autoruns, problem is that i dont know how to quickly save and restore setting changed by Autoruns, so often in end with Bluescreen in boot process even into Safe mode and i dont know how to fix it.. in other way when restore whole installation backup - and thats is very time consuming. I have Create restore points and after - use Last know working configuration option, but it doesnt working to this sort of crash. Lets assume that i have on same machine some other working windows installation to edit files on partition which in booting after change right know. So working ghost driver remove would be nice too, but i know its complicated..

Yes i purchased R-Loew patch years ago - 1 have 2009 version of it, but.. I did lots very ugly things with my installation - recovered old System/System32 a SystemBck folders and also system ini a got some start missing files error, so i deleted some entries from registry and finally a have managed Windows 98 booting repeatly to normal state and have installed one device, after other, until almost all was working, so i know that GPU, Audio, Net, Chipset are ok.. start freeze came with additional Sil3512A controller driver installation. Its controller im using for my Sata DVD writer, because i really hate IDE cables and as far i remeber Rloew said something about that only 1 of 2 Sata ports is supported and DVD driver is not supported by patch.. But in the pass it worked somehow, how not today i have tried all Bios combination, R-Loew patch etc, but i got only freezes, when DVD driver was connnected to Sata controller on board or on additional card. Was is strange normal Windows mode booting with my MB from Sata port of box in both IDE/Sata controller modes - Compatible and Enhanced..

Hmm so i tested Blackwings drivers and its not working, same error as driver from other package, in other OSes NIC is working.

Months ago i bough 1 USB soundcard on eBay for 3$ because my new soundcard cant be passthrough to old OSes no driver and its working, yeah sound quality is not great, but for some games on old OS is enough for my ears.. Its working from Win98 to Win 7 64bit with some universal USB audio driver - its probably something like SB16 or AC97 compatible soundcard. Have USB plug and play and small soundcard as device is practical and pass through of old card is problematic (new hardware works, older PCI cards not working often and you need lots of slots - i have 3 GPU with big coolers, so slots are problem). Present days MB even dont have PCI slots and PCI-E to PCI adapters is other possible source of problems. @loblo : Thanks, its great that USB Audio standard exist, on posted page is lots of devices, could you recommend me just something simple and UAC1 compatible? I would be ok with just 2 jacks out + mic, optimal is 4+ jacks for - directional audio and price <100 bucks, 150$ (for directional audio).

Update: I have removed GPU drivers - so i have Standard VGA compatible, its still freezing, is SATA related or other HW related. I have tried to reinstall all Rloew Sata patch and all Bios Sata settings, but its still the same. One more infa after few minutes of nothing is computer autorestarted - maybe it helps.

Hmm, did few rounds, im able to make normal mode boot, when i reinstall Intel 865 chipset drivers, or when i messing with Sata patch, but second reboot ends always in situation when cursor is blinking on black or boot screen freeze no ESC(during loading). Configuration is Intel 865 chipset + Core 2 Duo - Asrock Conroe865 + Geforce 6600 GT, 1 SSD - on primary Sata port + DVD drive on Sata controller - from SIL. BIOS - disc controller setttings - is Compatible Sata + IDE. I remember that in the pass i was experimenting with unofficial Nvidia 82 driver and officially not supported G7600 AGP and with PCI-E GPUs on 4core MB, know i have Unofficial driver in list of instlalled programs, but uninstallation is not working, so maybe some pieces of this driver are used instead proper official files. I not fan of fresh install, because of usually more wasted time and resurent old installation, where is are things adjusted to my needs and im quite poweruser. I really dont know if is problem in disc controller settings, or with GPU or with some software settings, some log would really help.. I really dont have good memory its few years, when i won this battle but, because of hardware failure i have to fight it again.. I can confirm that M5A97 R2.0 +AMD slow pseudo 8core can boot Windows 98SE, but i can tell anything about Storage (im now using IDE mode it is slow for now, maybe because of other drivers) and GPU, Audio and Lan - work in progress. I probably did mistake with Realtek LAN - 8111 is supported, but probably not all models i have 8111F. GPU - Geforce 7950 GT 512MB + unofficial drivers 82, i got strange Windows protection error - Configmg message. after drivers installation.. I also messing with Intel PCI-E 1000 CT Desktop network adapter - its seams that there are drivers, i could install them, but after reboot i got boot screen freeze, could Intel PCI-E network card work in Win98 SE? There also strange USB behavior, only in same mode i could see USB Fat32 flashdisk - even in USB3 port(Asmedia) and keyboard through USB to PS2 adapter is working, even in save mode. WHat is not working and working in my other Win98 machines is USB audion soundcard, here is detected as USB complex device, not soundcard, i dont know if i need a driver? I almost forgot how Win98 drivers hell looks like:)

Hello, i just need to resurrect my old physical HW installation of WIn98 SE, my board died, i used some board with VIA Core 2 chipset, now i have back my Intel 865 chipset. In safe mode is now booting fine, all devices are recognized no exlamation mark, but when i reboot i got freeze, during boot after keyb message.. When i remove all system devices i can boot into normal Windows 98 mod. I have i additional problem, when i start New hardware wizard, i got some INF file is broken message and new HW is not recognized, even HW tree is empty. How to fix it? What i can try?

I wasnt successfull (SB0570) with this driver too, its shame because Unraid can passthrough this card, i have some of SB Live 24 Gold and this one is cant be pass throught.

Why DMA was disabled for Win9x? It was advertised in Dos Age as big improvement and Dos expansion cards used it heavily.

Yeah i saw this thread but, where is actual version, its from first post, or is somewhere else, whole long threads are complicated, there is some info about bugs and some fixes in developement.. A i dont know history, so i dont know, if 1 post was reupdated with last patch version or not. Second question is how to install it, there is not any info / readme, only pack of exe and sys files etc..
