sdfox7 replied to Monroe's topic in Windows XP
The current update file for Avast 4.8 has a digital signature of September 12. Avast 4.8 runs on XP, but is also the final version that runs on Windows 95, 98 and ME. https://www.avast.com/en-sg/download-update Direct Link: http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/vpsupd4.exe Alternate (my FTP): http://sdfox7.com/avast/4.x/vpsupd4.exe -
WaterFox does indeed provide Windows XP 64-bit support. In other news, Google Chrome fails to load the WaterFox home page. What gives?

It is activated and working. I believe I disabled it at one time to force Firefox to use HTML5. -

In my own testing, Flash 23 does not work in Chrome, just as you said. Also, the Flash 23 plugin for Firefox does not load or work on Firefox ESR. However, it does work on the standard version of Firefox. -
I archived 3.18.1 back in April when it was first announced that XP would be losing support. I don't know if you require the latest version, but it doesn't appear the old ones are maintained by DropBox. The release notes complain that you must be running Vista or higher. http://sdfox7.com/xp/sp3/EOL/Dropbox 3.18.1 Offline Installer.exe The original link was https://clientupdates.dropboxstatic.com/client/Dropbox 3.18.1 Offline Installer.exe which longer works. It's available officially from the Internet Archive, aka Wayback Machine: https://web.archive.org/https://clientupdates.dropboxstatic.com/client/Dropbox 3.18.1 Offline Installer.exe

This is correct, SSL 3.0 does not work any longer, websites are looking for TLS. When using Internet Explorer 6 on XP (only for legacy testing), my college Outlook 365 does not load with SSL, only TLS.

@Blackwingcat Did you use the update mechanism within the Opera browser to get that 36.0.2130.80 version? The website is still serving the 36.0.2130.65 standalone version (at least to XP machines): http://www.opera.com/computer/windows http://www.opera.com/download/get/?id=39357&location=410¬hanks=yes&sub=marine

Adobe Flash, Shockwave, and Oracle Java on XP (Part 1)
sdfox7 replied to dencorso's topic in Windows XP
I wanted to note that that although Chrome is no longer receiving updates under XP, I noticed today that the structure of the C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen Fox\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\PepperFlash\21.0.0.xxx folder has changed. I noticed this because somehow I did not have to manually update pepflashplayer.dll this time around like I normally have. It appears Google has created a way for the pepflashplayer.dll to update independently on unsupported systems, even without Chrome itself updating. As in my post above from May, the Application Data folder for Chrome looked like this: It now looks like this, completely different: -
To avoid compatibility issues, my personal use policy has been to use Firefox ESR as my main browser, alongside Firefox Portable current release for the websites that desire a newer browser. On my ThinkPad T40, I have no issues with the current release Firefox ESR 45.2.0 and Firefox Portable 47.0.1. I think it will be a while before Mozilla drops XP support, particularly the ESR version which is designed for "conservatively slow upgraders" including schools, universities and business. Even when they do, there are alternatives (including spoofing the browser version).

My opinion is that Chrome 50 /Chromium 50 function without any hard limitations. It's just that Google has modified the code in just enough ways to prevent it from running on XP/Vista. The portable version of Chrome is already in extracted form; and it also fails to run on XP so it is not an installer issue, it's a code issue. About one month ago I compared the installers of Chrome 49 and Chrome 50 with HxD hex editor, and there are clearly code differences; I just don't know at this point how to backport/replace the 50 code with the 49 code, or if it even that simple.

In case you need the links for the Office 97 service packs, I have them here: http://sdfox7.com/office97/ If you prefer instead, the original links should still work using the archive straps: https://web.archive.org/web/20000620214646/http://download.microsoft.com/download/office97pro/sr1off9/SR-1/WIN98/EN-US/sr1off97.exe https://web.archive.org/web/20000511055258/http://download.microsoft.com/download/office97pro/sr2bof9/SR-2b/WIN98/EN-US/sr2bof97.exe

ExpressCards are available that upgrade laptops from USB 2.0 to 3.0. The ThinkPad T43 in 2005 was the first ThinkPad model to include ExpressCard slot: https://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/7479.ws (archived)

Windows XP SP2 is capable of WPA2, but only after you install the KB893357 supplement. SP3 includes WPA2. The original download link was http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/e/b/9eb62d0b-61f0-4c9e-9c52-e3bef96d9e7f/WindowsXP-KB893357-v2-x86-ENU.exe which is dead. You can get it from the Archive at https://web.archive.org/web/20050930231027/http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/e/b/9eb62d0b-61f0-4c9e-9c52-e3bef96d9e7f/WindowsXP-KB893357-v2-x86-ENU.exe

Adobe Flash, Shockwave, and Oracle Java on XP (Part 1)

You can get Adobe Flash for Opera from this page: https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/ Select "Windows 7/Vista/XP" and then select FP 21 for Opera and Chromium PPAPI. Unselect the McAfee Security Scan Plus crapware! -
Cyberformer, yes, Windows 9x can see any hardwired TCP/IP connection, which includes DSL and cable modem. To use wireless on Windows 9x, however, you'll need to use a WEP compatible signal, which usually means downgrading the router's security settings.

Adobe Flash, Shockwave, and Oracle Java on XP (Part 1)
sdfox7 replied to dencorso's topic in Windows XP
That is correct. If you fail to update the plugin in the folder C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen Fox\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\PepperFlash\21.0.0.xxx Chrome will still report the version that exists there. I'm not sure why there are two locations for PepperFlash, it used to just be the regular Program File folder. -
That system will work fine with U Verse. I had U Verse until AT&T sold the CT business to Frontier in 2013. I'm still using my U Verse router on the Frontier service, which meant I didn't need to buy a new one from Frontier. DSL is basically DSL.

VLC will run on those specs, I've done it in the past on Win95/NT 4.0 machines with 200MHz. You need a legacy version of VLC such as 0.8.6 which does not depend on SSE instructions. There were multiple versions of VLC 0.8.6, but I always ran into issues starting with version E so I only recommend A-D. http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/ http://sdfox7.com/win95/vlc086a.exe http://sdfox7.com/win95/vlc086b.exe http://sdfox7.com/win95/vlc086c.exe http://sdfox7.com/win95/vlc086d.exe You'll also probably need at least Direct X 6.0 but I would recommend Direct X 8.0 (DX80ENG.EXE): http://sdfox7.com/win95/DX80ENG.EXE

I agree this is likely possible to do if you were to extract the files manually to system directories. However, for the sake of simplicity, especially for any non-techie, SP3 is the way to go. However, the Adobe Forums notes that XP SP2 has outdated cryptographic cetificates, and recommends installing SP3. Latest Flash Player installer does not run- XP SP2 As far as Office goes, I'm using the original Office XP Professional (2002) version that came with my ThinkPad. Simply install the Compatibility Pack for 2007 Office System Files (fileformatconverters.exe) and you are good to go. That pack will work on any version of Office 2000 or newer (2000, XP 2002, and 2003).

Adobe Flash, Shockwave, and Oracle Java on XP (Part 1)
sdfox7 replied to dencorso's topic in Windows XP
GREAT WORK! I noticed this problem as well, just now. It turns out that my solution above is not entirely inclusive. It is also necessary to navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen Fox\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\PepperFlash\21.0.0.216 Then you need to replace the plugin in that folder with the updated plugin. I've opted to go with the newest 22.0.0.137 from Chrome 52. Once I have done that, right-clicking on the Adobe Flash test page confirms that the newest version is installed. -
While I have previously recommended switching to an alternative browser, the question is: if SlimJet continues to work on XP, what functions/code does it have that allows it to run, and can that be ported to Chrome 50?
-
I agree that XP SP2 is not obsolete, depending on what you're using it for. That being said, it is getting harder / more difficult to do certain things on XP without SP3. Adobe Flash Player 20 and later require a minimum of SP3, otherwise the installer won't run and you'll be stuck at 19.0.0.245. Office 2010 requires a minimum of SP3 to install, and most hardware you buy at Best Buy or any electronics are only "supported" under XP SP3 and later. If you look at the system requirements you'll see SP3 listed but not SP2. Also, Internet Explorer 6.0 cannot load secure SSL websites without SP3 because SP3 is the first version that supports SHA 2 in XP. With SP3: Without SP3: Again, it really depends on how up to date you need your software to be.

I would also install Internet Explorer 5.5 or 6.0, which update system files and libraries to newer versions. Many newer programs that run on Windows 98SE will demand newer versions of COMCTL32.DLL and MFC42.DLL, both of which are available in IE 5.5/IE 6.0. Depending on what you use the system for, you'll also want to upgrade DirectX to 9.0c: DirectX 9.0c End-User Runtime August 2006 (if that link dies in the future, you can get the archived version here: https://web.archive.org/web/20061122035939/http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/1/e/21e186a5-30b8-4cc0-888a-db4abb111405/directx_aug2006_redist.exe)
