  1. If security is such a big issue why don't you just make a small portion of your drive for Linux and install Malware protection on it so if you want to scan your old computer for viruses and stuff you can do it all you want with current support. Besides old systems like windows 95/98/ME (Me isn't that old its one year before XP also I know XP is about 14 years old) still have current virus/spyware protection. Avast 4.8 still gets definition updates and spybot search and destroy still supplies definition updates or the 1.xx versions (manual download from site). Also Spybot search and destroy also has on option to Immunize your browser which allows you to take preventive measures against spyware by using methods inside your browser(s) -quote spybot.
  2. Here are some nice spoilers that will help you search a site much easier. Google ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Google advanced search (if you don't want to use Boolean at all) http://www.google.com/advanced_search ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Boolean searching in general ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ More Boolean terms ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Boolean exercises! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Links to pages if you don't like the page copied into a spoiler https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/136861?hl=en , https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/2466433 , and http://www.googleguide.com/advanced_operators_reference.html
  3. ONGD-FREE Vuze bit-torrent h ttp://www.vuze.com/ . A nice modern bit-torrent client that ran with no issues on my windows Me computer. Did not have to use kex compatibility options, though I do have this dll in my system userenv.dll http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/138911-userenvdll-003-for-windows-9x/ that could of allowed it to run, though I'm not sure. EDIT: Of course it came with malware (like most Bit-torrents) so I would not recommend downloading it unless you have good virus scanning/protection to remove the free malware that comes with it. It also could be the packaged software that they try to make you download so be cautious with download (or any bit-torrent) if you are going to still download it. If you still want to download copy and past link into browser. Remove space. EDIT2: seems to be safe since only 2/50 report Malware with the first saying possible https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/13e34c41001bba1b7c95294ba7817f69eaa8bf4d90bbf61fb353a7916cf05cb6/analysis/
  4. Very good job. I might just want to reinstall xp again just to try this out. (and drive M$ crazy ) as bphlpt said there will always be hate.
  5. It -does- claim that. Interesting! Submix8c do you know of a good site to test the spyware detection of avast and defender. ( Don't worry I'm not afraid of killing this computer despite it being a main along side my Me computer. It has no important info on it anyway )
  6. I will have to correct you. It's Google that started giving you issues with Opera 10.63, the effect is the same , but the cause (and culprit) is different. jaclaz Yes that is true, but unfortunately Google practically own the internet now so what Google says must be done. , http://gs.statcounter.com/#search_engine-ww-monthly-201301-201401-bar , http://gs.statcounter.com/#mobile+tablet+console-os-ww-monthly-201301-201401-bar EDIT: I did notice this part "the effect is the same" and I'm just throwing stats around to show Google being the dominate one now. Maybe apple and Microsoft will team again to fight Google again ( old news http://blogs.computerworld.com/e-business/23063/microsoft-and-apple-team-drop-patent-bomb-android-and-google ). ( personally I like Google and Microsoft and wish they team to destroy apple instead of Microsoft being a worry wort and making metro crap when they fail to notice that desktops still hold the market for the internet http://gs.statcounter.com/#desktop+mobile-comparison-ww-monthly-201301-201401-bar )

  8. Neither. They just didn't work. The first one had "This" appended to the end of it, and the second had ")" appended. Both caused the respective link to not function when clicked. In the future, if you want to see exactly what is going on with your post before you post it, you can toggle the edit box "WYSIWYG" mode, (which is the little button in the top left of the edit box directly above the "B", ie "Bold", button), which exposes the BBCode equivalent commands. Since the post is essentially just text at that point, it is also sometimes easier to perform certain edits at that stage. It takes practice, but it is sometimes handy. Cheers and Regards Gotcha thanks for the tip
  9. @op you are looking for a program that can open ipa files. Description from files.org You could try to convert the file to an .apk (android file) but if I recall there are copyright laws that would prevent you.
  10. Modified. Curious though were they just too messy or against forum rules for posting links (aka messy?).
  11. That may be changing soon since opera 10.63 started to give me issues with Google. The app box when clicked doesn't work anymore (now brings you to a page instead of just dropping a menu), and when I did a google search It put the search bar in the middle of the page . I got so upset I upgraded to opera 12.02.
  12. Order from favorite to least favorite 1. sw3 2. sw6 3. sw4 4. sw5 5. sw2 6. sw1 (except for Darth maul scene he's my favorite sith)
  13. This might work, but it cost 3 euro. http://tips.techzene.com/2013/12/how-to-run-iphone-apps-on-pc.html (blog where I found the program) and http://www.xpadian.com/xpadian.html (the program; called iPadian)
  14. I know that WDM is designed to be forward compatible, and generally not backwards compatible, but couldn't a Win XP driver work on ME. I have gotten two drivers for windows 7 to run On my XP machine with no issue (unmodified). So theoretically couldn't it work here too (not talking about kernelEx making a difference). (not that it will I might have just been lucky) quote from wikipedia (I know its wikipedia but read here) "By conforming to WDM, drivers can be binary compatible and source-compatible across Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Vista (for backwards compatibility) on x86-based computers."
  15. I have the latest Free avast (2014), and avast free does give real time support thankfully (use avast also for Win Me). Another thankful thing is that avast didnt try to kill Defender yet so now I have real time anti-virus and anti-spyware. Also what is the actual difference of security level of the different levels of avast. The Internet security and Premier just seem like bloat. http://www.avast.com/en-us/index Norton killed my games on my computer before I went from 7 to vista. I'm thinking of downgrading from avast 2014 to 4.8 after I learn how to kill nag windows with Ollydbg.
  16. There is also this http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/157173-kext-diy-kernelex-extensions/ . If this extension doesn't work well you could also try this http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/138911-userenvdll-003-for-windows-9x/ . You do have to remember though as LostInSpace said not all XP applications will work.
  17. I'm surprised no mentioned the biggest hoax of them all Climate change. First it was global cooling http://wattsupwiththat.com/2013/03/01/global-cooling-compilation/ . Now it has become global warming, and honestly some of it is pathetic. http://wattsupwiththat.com/climate-fail-files/over-4-5-billion-people-could-die-from-global-warming-related-causes-by-2012/ . Or even my favorite this one EDIT: did anyone mention the Finding bigfoot show on animal planet http://www.animalplanet.com/tv-shows/finding-bigfoot .
  18. Thanks for your response. I have both a router firewall and use windows firewall, since I'm too lazy to set up a third party one on this computer (I know that not smart but I see windows firewall as good enough). I'm gonna keep defender so I can have a real time protection anti-spyware program, and use Malwarebytes as a scanner. Thanks for all of your help.
  19. Thanks for the links they helped me bring me closer to my choice. One more thing though. My current setup is Defender, Avast, Malwarebytes. I know that having two active antivirus programs are bad, though I never heard that two anti-spyware programs would conflict (maybe with real time protection). If I upgrade to essentials will I need to disable avast to prevent conflicts.
  20. Which one of these are better to use for a windows vista computer. ( I know the differences between the vista/7 version and the windows 8 version )
  21. Yes that is true, but I modified it since I didnt know how Jaclaz would think of that so I then stated this to try and reference it "Also If I recall someone else here uses Linux as a firewall. ". You mean like in Communist Russia? http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/155290-windows-8-deeper-impressions/page-151#entry1047135 In theory yes, in practice no. Besides the known duality : the point is that IF - say - Linksys (<-- put here any maker of DSL routers here) and a Government Agency planted *something* in your DSL router, it is there. If you replace the firmware with an Open Source alternative you have *some* added chances to have it not anymore (provided that the *something* is in the firmware and not in other "lower level" parts, such as a chip, a piece of shielded cable, the RJ socket or *whatever*). Putting a "secure" router between the PC (or PC's in the LAN) and the DSL router will add some security against malware running on the PC(s) and will also help in defending yourself from intrusions from remote, nothing regarding your exact identification, location and times of activity (all these come from the actual land line plug and "they" can have it alright). jaclaz P.S.: The ball containing the name "Linksys" was drawn out of my randomizer bowl by a blindfolded virgin (NOT what you think ) and it is a mere coincidence that this happened right after I read this: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?s=&showtopic=25304&view=findpost&p=174933 about the Moon Malware. You might like this. Its the most anonymous way to search the internet that I know. https://www.torproject.org/projects/torbrowser.html.en . 22. Thanks for your replies LostInSpace2012, bphlpt, tain, and ROTS! I'll put them to good use
  23. I do my best . Thats just the way I interpreted your statement. All three of these are because of the inviting conditions that warmer areas bring which allow life to flourish. Thats because you can do stuff in the summer. In order to do activities in the winter you must be bundled up. You must bring MANY layers of clothing not just do to the weather, but so you don't over heat constantly taking layers of clothing on and off. As a camper I now that cold weather and symptoms can happen at ANY TIME of the year. The second coldest night I have ever spent was a late spring camping trip at west point. The weather dropped to 40 degrees (Fahrenheit). I was so cold and I'll prepared for the weather that I was forced to sleep in a emergency blanket to keep warm. The coldest night I wont explain because the only reason I got cold that night was because of having to share my warmth with other campers (scouts) during wilderness survival do to them being i'll prepared and making shelter like this (sadly its not a joke) Of course their were no tents to go back into since we made shelter of what we could find. (it didnt help that I built a 4 1/2 ft tall 8 ft long lean to out of trees EDIT: Don't take my caps as me being mad I really like debating.
  24. Thanks very much, that was definitely helpful and I'll look into it. I wonder if the technology (and thus the situation) has changed enough since that article came out, to affect one's decision. --JorgeA A quick search on their site found me a five part tutorial that was initially started in 2010 and last produced in 2011 http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/10816 , http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/10843 , http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/10882 , http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/10899 ,and http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/10929 . In his tutorial he stated he will be doing the following For your needs you would seem to take interest in the last article he posted so for your convenience I'll post it down here too. http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/10929 EDIT: the second and third link seem to not want to work as a hyper link , but they do work. Just copy and paste them instead.
