  1. You have to consider how - among all programming chores - kernel level programming is one of the most difficult ones (if not outright the most difficult one). ones. I wouldn't advice anyone to start from it. You normally need a decent familiarity with C/ C++ and with writing programs in userland before attempting to go down to kernel level. http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Windows_Programming/User_Mode_vs_Kernel_Mode jaclaz Thanks for the info Jaclaz and for your time. You showed me I have a lot to learn , and learn shall I. The first thing I'm gonna do is learn c/c++ then focus on userland. Kernel level can wait, but can't wait to get to it.
  2. Did IE11 mess with your sea-monkey tabs like it did to mine. (made the tabs words all pixelated)
  3. Hmm wow a lot has happened since I last checked. I thank you all for your replies. Jaclaz and submix8c you two are very knowledgeable can you tell me sites where I can learn about the windows NT ( and 9x though 9x is an optional request ) kernels. It bugs seeing people do all of these projects and I cant do anything to help.
  4. I get the point, but I promise it is not "hate". IMHO the "fanboy" topic is really about enablers, there is nothing wrong with being a superfan of anything. I don't think you are a hater but a seeker of truth. Trust me I got my fanboys too through out the years learned to never tune out anything. I do agree with you though, but I doubt windows will fall anytime soon. Sure windows 8 and the disappointment called 8.1 made things look worse but is nothing compared to the many fails apple has done when Steve jobs left. If windows did fall who would replace them apple... no. The real threat to windows is google. Google is wiping the floor of apple with android and already owns the Internet. Google has already entered the OS world too and offers cheap chrome books and free chromium OS. If windows does fall I got here to go to since I would never use a mac after owning one and Linux is really intense. I can also say I will never buy any new windows PCs if they continue to use metro especially after watching this What did I say some posts back? Opps lots of typos but I will keep them since they are quite funny . The true security of a computer is like what an old man once wrote. So if you want to use XP than go do it. *NOTE* I will post here if POSReady gets updates after windows xp day 0.
  5. Hmm that is indeed very interesting. Personally I haven't used NT 4 or Win2k but nonetheless I have seen similar results with my machines. My Windows 7 computer seems to always catch a case of the flu for when I do my daily checks I remove a daily 1-3 viruses. My Vista machine is much better but I do catch a virus or two once a month. My recent POSReady 2009 came with viruses ( Thanks M$ for not cleaning the install ) but after that was all good and havent seen one since. My windows 98 computer as already stated hasnt had a virus in 6 mounths and that was a freak inncident. I use malwarebytes and Avast with a router firewall. (Upnp is disabled) I do pose a question for you Jaclaz. Are you a heavy downloader like I and always venture the unknown. What browser do you use (I use seamonkey). If you use firefox do you use no script. I do use noscript but only on the 98 computer for extra protection. In the end comparing my computers to yours not only showed whom the safer/smarter user is, but showed the real backbone of security. (the user)
  6. No I think you were perfectly on topic. You managed to answer all of the recent questions on this thread I also perfectly agree with you especially on vista. Vista was a victim of M$ who released it too early then plagued it with extreme over advertising just to make as much money off of it. Now this question is off topic but everywhere I go their is always rants on fanboys. Dont get me wrong I hate them but there is some thing worse than a fanboy http://static.giantbomb.com/uploads/original/0/6470/1461657-hatersgonnahate.jpg
  7. ongoing (kernelEx) Pea zip. Its a nice free "Zip files utility, free Rar files extractor". It supports the following windows Windows 9x, Windows NT/2K/XP, Windows Vista/7/8 (32 and 64 bit), ReactOS, Wine http://peazip.sourceforge.net/ Through the installer is a issue and refused to work. ( I used KernelEx to run the installer and it worked like a chime)
  8. Any one of you who are willing to try and use POSReady 2009 should after install download a virus removal program( I used Malwarebytes) or Manually remove these registries Their was a virus on the install and microsoft forgot to remove some of the registries. source http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/40191-Windows-Embedded-POSReady-2009/page10
  9. As I searched around I bumped into this forum. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/408136/win-98-viability-in-todays-web/ And one of the users stated I would estimate in the high 80% range. The Windows API has remained almost completely backwards compatible with itself for 20+ years. An application written in 1990 strictly to documented APIs would very likely work on any later (32 bit) version of the OS. I would not recommend using any of the 9x series Windows operating systems in a networked environment. Even if a piece of malware was unable to run, it would try to run which in the pre-protected-memory versions of Windows will 90% of the time crash the whole system. I echo Romeo29's suggest about using Linux instead. There are a number of modern and light weight Linux distributions available (such as Puppy Linux or Xubuntu; Linux Mint would be the best for novice users, but it's system requirements are fairly steep for a computer of this vintage.) I'm not sure about how accurate his estimate is but I have found that you can get viruses today. ( I use avast and have gotten modern viruses on my computer ) I didn't let the viruses stay long so I don't want to know if their payload would of worked but I would be careful. ( if I recall I got it from adobes website when I downloaded flash 11 for 98) *Note* dont ask what the viruses were as soon as I found them (daily check ups) I deleted them. (should of saved them in the vault) EDIT: could be a rare occurrence since I haven't had an issue in over six months.
  10. I Opps though I did find this http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en-us/default.aspx . This website hopefully has all of the info I need to be certified as a M$ IT pro or even a developer. ( But since I have no background I have to start out as a Microsoft technical associate and work my way up. EDIT: hmm since MSITP are being retired , and Most MCITP certifications will be retired by July 31, 2014 I shall be looking at Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE).
  11. You can thank apple for that.
  12. Heres an article that will rise your hopes http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2014/01/security-essentials-for-windows-xp-gets-a-15-month-reprieve/ EDIT: Someone already posted it (different site) but I did find this http://windowsitpro.com/windows-xp/windows-xp-gets-another-lift-msrt-extension
  13. I dont know what to say but the new IE11 is so good it makes me almost want to use IE again. (I know that M$ made a good animie short )
  14. Hmm I'll do that. If I like it then I'll buy it, and if I do buy it I'll post if I got updates for may's patch Tuesday after the 2014 WinXP death date. EDIT: Liked it so I'm buy a product key.
  15. Do any of you developers or IT pros think that this OS is worth it to buy. I have been looking at it and can see its April 2019 extended support date end as an advantage over normal XP pro SP3 but from a technical stand point do you guys think its worth it over the normal XP. (But please put it in simpleton language so average day user like me can understand )
  16. Thanks for the help and I will check out those links. Its a V1. The first link Is where I got the driver in the first place . Though the issue just might be the hardware its self and not the driver since the computer my 98se computer is on was built for XP. ( I do have all correct drivers) The issue could also be an issue with driver and software install for I do remember finding some info on the linkseys community talking about that if I find the link I would post it. I also found the link to the cite I was talking about but its not a linkseys community but tomms hardware http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/15403-43-linksys-adaptor-windows. If I have anymore Issues I would post them were you recommend.

  18. Thanks dude for such a nice service pack but there is an issue. It has been interrupting with my Linkseys WUSB54G network adapter. The thing has always been a pain to use, but now connecting to the internet is near impossible. It keeps saying You are connected to the access point, but the internet cannot be found. (dont say reinstall it for I have done that 25 times already) So what do you think can be interfering with the driver . (I didnt type my password in wrong either so please dont say that)
  19. No I can bet a lot of money that antivirus support will be here for XP for a long time. Especially avast, they will support windows XP for a long time. Heck they still support windows 98 .
  20. All right I'll remember that for next time.
  21. Why dont you ask one of the moderators to tidy up this part of the site. Or maybe start a poll or a petition (Free petition site here https://www.change.org/petition) if you like the idea. The 9x community seems to be a big part of MSFN so if a bunch a people want change it would probably happen.
  22. Hey thanks man for all the help and when I get my MTA certification I'll be glad to help out here too. Hey it just happens I got an extra 2 SDR RAM sticks laying around my house so thats all good. Thanks for all of the info now I got a full list to build my XP macnine shall she live like 9x. It's all good man now all I need is one more thing, and that is a link to dual booting windows 2K and XP you got me intrigued when you said 2K works well on it for I want both. Thanks for all of your help your a life saver!!!
  23. Well it wasnt my quote it was a quote from wikipedia. If you like you can go and change it but I really appreciate the answer you gave. When I get my MTA certification maybe you can pm me if you want any assistance. It would be fun to work on something. (***NOTE***) not certified yet but hopefully in the next 6 months.
  24. The reason I want a career in computers is cause 1 I love them and 2 I want to be certified so when I'm in college (since I would be IT certified I can self employ myself to help local people with pc issues) Being an it professional would only be a secondly job.
  25. The first nearly matches it only difference are the SPs and its an upgrade. (not a problem I have plenty of other legit windows install discs I can use to get to xp) And the other one is not home edition both discs I showed are Pro editions. Though I do have more than 3 of those exact Home editions discs you showed. You want a picture of the whole board... shure. I removed it from the case just to take those pictures. I shall update the ulbum momentary and post a link to the updated one . ( It has two 256mb of ram (sdr?) why you need the io panel beats me but ok. Why are you doubting my pics if its the date that only because im using an old sony mini cd camera unfortunently it likes to reset ifs self every time I turn it off. (still use it cause my dad spent a lot of money to get professional lens for it) If I have to I can post a picture of myself with the hardware. EDIT: Updated album here *note* if a picture is blurry check for a caption (description) https://plus.google.com/photos/104106276303758772879/albums/5971573098173679217
