Service pack for Windows 98 Standard (First, Gold)
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Do you mean the difference between alpha and "final" releases of the 98fe pack, nicke85? no final nor full pack release exists because the pack is an "unfinished" product and is still in alpha stage. the 98fe sp2 hasnt reached beta either. -
KB912812-Anyway to fix ActiveX installs?
erpdude8 replied to Eck's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
which version of the BROWSEUI.DLL file did you use to fix your problem, RainyShadow? the one from IE 5.5 SP2. be sure to use the BROWSEUI.DLL file from the KB905915 IE 5.5 SP2 update for the latest security fixes for the BROWSEUI.DLL file. The 1024x768 screen resolution should be used with 70Hz or higher refresh rate frequency with your computer monitor. I dont use the 1024x768 screen resolution on a 15 inch computer monitor because the 15' monitor only supports that resolution at 60hz refresh rate which causes screen flickers and hurts my eyes (and gives me headaches). Better get a bigger monitor (17 inch monitor or larger) that can support 1024x768 resolution at least 70Hz frequency to reduce eyestrain. -
my brother has an XP-based Mitac MiNote 8080 laptop computer that has the Mash-ta DVD-RAM UJ-811b CD/DVD drive. I had similar problems billeh had with his UJ-811 drive but I've partially fixed the problem with the drive my bro has. You may want to read this: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=...Mats***a+UJ-811 I used a piece of sandpaper to clean the micro gold connectors at the back of the UJ-811 drive and that got the drive to read ALL kinds of CDs/DVDs. and if the problem happens again, I just take out the drive and clean the connectors with sandpaper again.

also version 5.10.2600.1271 of Qfecheck.exe is included in the MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE file (one of MS's Product Support Reporting Tools package): http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&DisplayLang=en

Here's a list of Intel boards that support USB 2.0: http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/...b/cs-009024.htm There's a file called USB20.EXE that can provide USB 2.0 support for Win98se/ME for certain Intel boards.

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
uh I USE WMP9, CLASYS! I'll ask MDGx to make an unofficial KB917734 wmpui.dll WMP 7.1 patch for Win9x/ME/NT4 which should replace the unofficial WMP 7.1 KB911565 patch for 9x/NT4. You mean the corrected Win98 INF file for KB918547. already did late Wednesday. should apply to ALL editions of Win98 (both FE & SE). -

the answer to this is NO. the_guy wont be managing the 98fe SP2. looks like the responsibility is on Gape. -
KB912812-Anyway to fix ActiveX installs?
erpdude8 replied to Eck's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
see if there's a patch for the Star Trek Captain's Chair at the game creator's web site that will make it XP SP2 compatible. min sys requirements for XP are 233 Mhz Pentium with 64megs of RAM. recommeneded config is a 500 Mhz Pentium3 with 128Mb of RAM or better. HEY mr_bumbles. ditch the KB912812 update and install the KB916281 update. see if that will improve your situation! -
Gurgelmeyer, wonder if the latest USP Win2k SP5.1 pack has the latest QFECheck.exe tool for Windows 2000. There is a KB828854 hotfix that has version 5.10.2600.1271 of Qfecheck.exe and it can work under Windows 2000, XP & Server 2003. MS KB article 828854 posted here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/828854/ the_guy told me he has the KB828854 patch. ask him if you need it.

98SE WU Ending So How About IE 6 SP1 Updates?
erpdude8 replied to Eck's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Thanx for the updates, the only one I had is 318089, which is a Windows Script update, not technically an IE/OE update [and no minor version update as such], and is/was a standard part of 98SE Windows Update offerings. The rest look totally relevant.cjl Q318089 is NOT needed if IE6 SP1 is installed. IE6 SP1 includes this fix as well as Windows Script version 5.6.8825. KB916281 replaces KB912812; last official IE6 SP1 update for Win98/ME. Future IE6 SP1 updates after July 11 will only be released for Win2k SP4/WinXP SP1. Win9x/ME are NOT affected by the problems of 841873 - no KB841873 fix for 9x systems were made . BTW - support for Windows XP SP1 ends on Oct. 10, 2006. -
06-015 (Q908531) still not up on WU, but...

has any WinNT4 user experience the problem of TweakUI not changing shortcut arrows with KB841356 shell32.dll patch installed? -
the_guy, wonder if you still need the KB911589 Proquota.exe hotfix for Win2k. I'll try to request for it today.

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
ok. so far Gape has done nothing with the 98fe SP. Yup. I've confirmed that KB916281 fixed the URLMON.DLL problem from KB912812 of IE6 SP1. Office Update and Windows Update sites worked correctly. -
98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
yeah I noticed that, the_guy. mentioned it in an earlier post. so are we close to a new beta of the ME service pack being posted. also, I was wondering if you would be interested in making a beta of the 98 FE service pack 2.x. last time I heard the 98fe SP2 was stuck in alpha 2 and hasnt been updated for almost a year and nobody wants to revise it. -
137GB limit - ESDI_506.PDR and other limits
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
"bugs associated with optical drives and IDE file tranferring, copying"? Bugs with optical drives - OK. But I didn't notice any problems with the hard drives. I have been using it for more than 2 years and I keep .SFV files for all stored data (everything exept Windows and Program Files). They are all OK. Where did you get this information? I don't know if it can be uninstalled or not. I never tried. But that method proposed by RainyShadow looks very suspicious. When I have to remove a driver (any driver) I do it this way: - Stop computer - Remove hardware (not in this case) - Start windows in safe mode - Remove driver using Add/Remove Programs (if it's there) OR - Remove the device from Device Manager OR directly from registry (this is the proper way to make sure no garbage remains in the system) In this case remove: - HKLM\Enum\PCI\VEN_1106&DEV_0571&SUBSYS_05711106&REV_06 (VIA Bus Master PCI IDE Controller) - HKLM\Enum\MF (the two IDE Ports of the controller are listed here) - HKLM\Enum\SCSI\[name of HDD] (the drives are listed here, remove only those connected to IDE controller if you also have a SCSI controller or SATA or RAID) - Remove .INF files form \Windows\INF\Other\ - Remove driver files (.DRV, .VXD, .MPD, etc.). They are all listed in the .INF file. - Restart windows That's it! It always works. After the restart Windows will detect that the IDE controller has no driver installed (the device was removed from Device Manager or registry) and it will install the default driver (because the .INF file was removed from INF directory) I got a new DFI CM33-TL motherboard a few weeks ago that uses VIA chipsets (and has BIOS revision C) to replace an old Jetway mobo that died because of faulty capacitors that leaked some yellow stuff. As I looked at the DFI downloads page for the CM33-TL mobo, it has BIOS updates that can support drives with 48-bit LBA [137Gb or higher]. ONLY CM33-TL Revision "C" BIOSes [not revisions A & B] can allow the use of 137Gb+ drives. the DFI board that I got does support 137gb HDs. -
KB912812-Anyway to fix ActiveX installs?
erpdude8 replied to Eck's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
OH ECK! Try to install this new IE update from MS06-021- http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms06-021.mspx or better yet, get the patch directly from here: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...0afab75c3a5.exe The KB916281 patch for IE6 SP1 has URLMON.DLL versions 6.00.2800.1550 and 6.00.2800.1551. See if the newer builds of URLMON.DLL file work ok with Windows Update and Office Update. -
98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
yea M$ screwed up the KB918547 QFECheck registry info for the Win98 version of KB918547. WinME's KB918547 patch is ok. Good thing somebody like me has to fix their mistake. then I'd suggest installing both the unofficial KB912919 fixes for Win98/ME and the KB918547 fixes for Win98/ME to elliminate the WMF problems. -
98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Taken from my edited quote below MDGx's in the first page of this thread. Open Registry Editor [regedit.exe] and look for the KB918547 entries- KB918547.EXE,,"4.10.0.2224 Q918547.dll,,"4.10.0.2224 I suspect the String variable was called \WINDOWS\KB918547\ for both of those files. Change \WINDOWS\KB918547\ to \WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KB918547\ and close registry editor. Now QFEcheck should correctly report the two files. The WinME version of KB918547 does NOT have the QFECheck problem because they reference the updated files at the correct folder. -

erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
when you say "red x" in Qfe, do you mean Qfecheck? Does Qfecheck report those two files Not found? here's the problem with the KB918547.inf file I found in these two lines: -- HKLM,%UpdateKey%\%SPKey%\%LocaleID%%UpdID%,%10%\KB918547\KB918547.EXE,,"4.10.0.2224" HKLM,%UpdateKey%\%SPKey%\%LocaleID%%UpdID%,%10%\KB918547\Q918547.dll,,"4.10.0.2224" -- they should be the following: -- HKLM,%UpdateKey%\%SPKey%\%LocaleID%%UpdID%,%11%\KB918547\KB918547.EXE,,"4.10.0.2224" HKLM,%UpdateKey%\%SPKey%\%LocaleID%%UpdID%,%11%\KB918547\Q918547.dll,,"4.10.0.2224" -- %10% should be %11% [%10% goes to Windows folder while %11% points to \Windows\System\ folder] I'll make and INF file that will correct this registry blunder by MS. ARE you ABSOLUTELY sure the updated URLMON.DLL file from MS06-021 works with WU & OU? Urlmon.dll file I'm using is version 6.00.2800.1551 [the RTMQFE version]. -
can you give us a more accurate link or even a direct dowload URL to the Registry Plugin for Total Commander?

One more resident s**ker?? They're surely lost 9x code. YUP. they surely lost the darn 9x code. HAHAHAHA! Because we could sue Microsoft because they claimed that there will be an update and know there isn't. It was so clear that they won't make a patch but they didn't even try. The good thing is that Microsoft couldn't downgrade the security rating from critical to not critical now(like they did often).^^ They can only say it's too dificult..., there are incompatibilities,.... lazy M$ . heh, DONT waste your time trying to actually sue M$ just to make 'em patch 9x systems now, winxpi. you'll just get into even more trouble. Note that the new W98/ME updates are NOT yet posted at Windows Update today. Wait until Wednesday noon or afternoon for them to be posted at WU. New WMP 9/10 security update [917734]: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/MS06-024.mspx
