  1. thanks MDGx. I have notified Microsoft about the directx_aug2006_redist.exe file not working under Win98/ME. They might post up a new one soon (I hope). In the meantime, I'll take the unofficial DX9 August 2006 Redist addon for Win98 & ME. GRPHFLTS.EXE now works under ALL 32bit Windows versions including Win2k, XP & 2k3. Got it right on the fifth try.
  2. you can request the hotfix for a different language as long as you mention the language version of Windows (ex. Windows 2000 Professional SP4 German). note that you can also send your request to wrhelp@microsoft.com
  3. I believe it is removed but I never knew that the ME version was installed as I had originally used Gape's 98 service pack and it must of at one time contained the ME version of dskmaint.dll. I am up and running with my "Copy System Files Only" available again so the problem is fixed. Thanks to all for your help! Tmod You can also use "SYS.COM A:" from the DOS prompt to copy the basic Win98 startup files onto an existing floppy disk without formatting it [assuming the floppy drive is the A drive].
  4. waywyrd, does your computer use the older APM power management standard or the ACPI (advanced configuration & power interface) standard for power management? Check in Device Manager, expand the System Devices section and see if ACPI appears on there. You can also check the Power Management control panel properties.
  5. NOPE! still does NOT work under Win2k/XP/2k3. Delete the following lines from GF.INF file [follow EXACTLY what is written here, MDGx]: --- [MicrosoftSharedDir] HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion","MicrosoftSharedDir","","%35353%\%M_S%" --- also delete the "28740=MicrosoftSharedDir,5" line from the [CDS] section. Then it should work under Win2k/XP/2k3/Vista. I have noticed when installing FLOPUPD.EXE (under Win95 RTM/SP1), FLOPUPD2.EXE or AMDK6UPD.EXE (under Win95 OSR2.x) Win95 scans for "new" floppy disk drives just like when Win98/ME tries to search for floppy drives during startup [which can make the floppy drive light flash on briefly]. In Win98 & ME, simply uncheck the option "Search for new floppy disk drives each time your computer starts" from the Floppy Drive of the File System dialog box of the System Control panel applet. I've figured out how to turn off the floppy drive scan feature in Win95 after installing FLOPUPD.EXE, FLOPUPD2.EXE or AMDK6UPD.EXE and it involves putting in some registry entries.
  6. dump the kb918547.exe and q918547.dll files. I've removed them from beta 4 of the 98fe SP2 which will be posted tomorrow morning. also modify your mesp202en.SED file and edit the TargetWin9xVersion and the TargetNTVersion sections of the SED file to have the following: TargetWin9xVersion=4.90.3000:%OSWarn%:0K TargetNTVersion=0:%OSWarn%:0K Then in the [strings] section put this line: OSWarn=This Service Pack is for Windows Millennium Edition only. Starting from beta 3 of the unofficial 98FE SP2, when running the 98FE SP2 under other versions of Windows than Win98fe, a warning message will say "This Service Pack is for Windows 98 Standard Edition only." instead of the default message "The 'Unofficial Windows98 SP2' package is not compatible with the version of Windows you are running."
  7. my list of win95 hotfixes is shrinking. there are about less than ten win95 hotfixes I have left on my list. I'm waiting for Petr to send me (and maybe MDGx) some more Win95 hotfixes.
  8. so guys, what do you think of CLASYS saying that all RAM "gets old" with age?
  9. how about using Cdplayer.exe to play music CDs. Sometimes I hate to use Media Player 7.1 or 9.0 to play audio CDs from there, especially under WinME. The WinME version of cdplayer.exe launches whatever version of WMP installed (from 7.0 to 9.0). I replaced the WinME version of cdplayer.exe with the Win98se version so now I can use cdplayer.exe to play audio CDs instead of WMP 7.x/9.x under ME.
  10. Making the SP "flawless" is UNrealistic, PROBLEMCHYLD! There WILL be problems even though they are very minor. Stable and reliable would be the more appropriate words to use. not going to happen. the "delete large files bug" only happens in IE6 and not IE 5.01/5.5. AND not everyone uses IE 6. adding those files could break IE 5.01 for some Win98se users who use IE 5.01 [not IE 5.5 or IE 6].
  11. maybe MS might release a new IE update in October can you post this under another site like Mytempdir.com, jimmsta? I'm not in favor of downloading large files from Rapidshare. Note to MDGx: I noticed when I recently downloaded the updated HTML Help 1.41 pack for Win98/ME/NT4 it now has the newer HHCTRL.OCX file. However, you need to change the version number of the HH 1.41 pack from 5.2.3790.309 to 5.2.3790.558 on your Add-ons page.
  12. OR test out Firefox 2.0 beta 1 under Win95. FF 2.0B1 fixes the W9X un-installer problem found in FF versions 1.5.0.2 to 1.5.0.6. When trying to remove FF 1.5.0.2 - 1.5.0.6 under Win95/98/ME the un-installer hangs and does nothing. Win9x FF un-install bug is mentioned here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=338752
  13. I registered the version of eXeScope I have on my machines [6.41]. The Shareware version also can not allow more than 1 edit (or change) of a file. The full registered version, on the other hand, can.
  14. try installing the latest unofficial HTML Help 1.41 patch from MDGx's web site. Delete the hh.exe, hhctrl.ocx, itircl.dll and itss.dll files and then install the updated HTML Help 1.41 program. The from Regedit, delete the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility" registry key and go to Add/Remove programs, select Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Tools and choose the option to Repair Internet Explorer and restart the computer. sometimes I do that in order to get some CHM Help files to work correctly. If following these tips do not work then there is definitely a problem with the Msseclnt.chm file.
  15. that might work. though you will not have the Lock Taskbar option that is included in XP. Tihiy's RPLite5 pack not only changes the Win98se Taskbar to the XP version but also adds the Lock Taskbar option which can either be enabled or disabled. I prefer not only the XP Taskbar but also the XP Taskbar's functions that were not included in older versions.
  16. so it looks like the WinME version of DSKMAINT.DLL file should be removed from MDGx's 98SE2ME pack. WinME's format dialog box no longer contains the "Copy System Files only" option. Microsoft took it out and the "Format /S" command-line option no longer works. Only way to create startup disks in WinME is to do it from the Add/Remove programs Startup Disk tab and clicking on the Create Disk button. Tmod, you might want to create a Win98se startup disk from the Add/Remove Programs "Startup Disk" tab. Creating one there is a lot better than creating one from the Format dialog box or using Format /s and it will also put the CD-ROM drivers on there. Making a startup disk by using Format /S or from the Win98se Format dialog box will not add the CD-ROM drivers.
  17. kind of outdated. last version of Roxio Easy CD/DVD Creator to work under Win98se is version 6. Versions 7 and higher are only Win2000/XP compatible. The one included in WMP 9 is version 5. Even though some users install the "free" edition of Roxio CD burning plugin from WMP9, it cant burn at high speeds. I had to install the "Platinum" edition of the Roxio 5 CD burning software (not free) to convert the normal Roxio CD Burning app from WMP to the premium edition so that it can burn CDs at higher speeds.
  18. however I DO! My brother uses Roxio CD burning plugin from WMP9 but we installed Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum version then updated it to v5.3.5.10 so that the Roxio CD burning plugin will become the "premium" edition and now we can burn music CDs from WMP9 at higher speeds with the CD-RW drive. So we do not delete Roxio program. Remove Roxio CD burning plugin if you do not use a CD-RW or DVD-RW drive or you use other CD Recording software (like Nero) to create music CDs.
  19. I'll try to request this from MS today. when making an unofficial U918899 IE6 SP1 patch for Win98/ME/NT4, just include the RTMQFE files only. and include the updated urlmon.dll file from 923762 into U918899. note that KB923762 is for IE6 SP1 only. other versions of IE don't seem to be affected when installing KB918899. BTW - I found a problem with the directx_aug2006_redist.exe package. When running that under Win98 or WinME I get error message "The directx_aug2006_redist.exe file expects a newer version of Windows. Upgrade your Windows version." I dont get this error when running it under WinXP. I noticed that this DX9.0c Redist pack was created from version 6.0.5482.0 of wextract.exe. maybe that might be the problem.
  20. GRPHFLTS.EXE now works under Win95/98/ME BUT fails under Win2000/XP/2003 (and maybe NT4). You are better off specifying [DestinationDirs] for CF as "CF=35353,MICROS~1\GRPHFLT" instead of "CF=28740,GRPHFLT". Win2k/XP/2k3 does NOT understand the 'CF=28740,GRPHFLT' part. The [MicrosoftSharedDir] section --- HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion","MicrosoftSharedDir","","%35353%\%M_S%" --- should NOT be there. This is why GRPHFLTS does not work under Win2000/XP/2003 as GRPHFLTS tries to look for a registry entry called "MicrosoftSharedDir" under Win2k/XP/2k3 in registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\" and it does NOT exist. So the [MicrosoftSharedDir] section needs to be removed from the GF.INF file. use CF=35353,MICROS~1\GRPHFLT from now on and GRPHFLTS will work not only under Win95/98/ME but also under WinNT4/2000/XP/2003. Let's get it right this time since GF.INF was revised at least 3 times already.
  21. My quote from page 31 of "98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes" topic: I'll include these in beta 5 (not beta 4) in the 98fe SP. Beta 4 will be up early next week. No probs so far with hhctrl.ocx from KB922616. Be sure to install KB896358 HTML Help update first, then use the updated hhctrl.ocx file.
  22. nice that version 4.00.1119 of esdi_506.pdr is posted but 4.00.1111 is still there which is almost infuriating 4.00.1111 SHOULD HAVE BEEN REMOVED and should be REPLACED with either 4.00.1116 or 4.00.1118 as 4.00.1111 is BUGGY and causes some UDMA hard drives to hang or malfunction in Win95. Found out the REAL reason why I couldnt use the 40Gb HD on my custom made PC which used to have Win95B. It was a bad motherboard (a Jetway 600-series mobo with SiS chipsets) with leaking capacitors. My brother and I replaced it with a DFI brand mobo (with VIA chipsets) a few days ago. Now tested the 40Gb with the DFI mobo and Win95B and things went smoothly [and Win95B loaded lightning fast]. But we decided to put WinXP on there since we do use some apps that require XP.
  23. C:\TEMP is %TEMP% on my 98SE computer.@MDGxDon't know why this error comes upd, didn't happen on mine. Maybe it happens because you use an other directory then standard C:\Windows\Temp anyway you can simply extract the contents with e.g. winrar and then install using Q918899_d_RTMQFE.inf Yeah, I did that. Thanks for the tip. I just copied the files from C:\TEMP [while the installer was paused] somewhere else, and then ran the INF. But if other people also have %TEMP% variable set somewhere else than %windir%\TEMP , the installer won't work. You need to account for all situations, no matter where the %TEMP% location is set. Are you adding the temp directory to the SED config file? If you are, you need to remove it. If not specified inside the SED, the temp dir is found automatically by the iexpress installer, it just searches the memory to find the SET variable location. In my case [example]: SET TEMP=C:\TEMP SET TMP=C:\TEMP SET PKTMP=C:\TEMP [this sets the TEMP variable for PKZIP/PKUNZIP] These lines are in my autoexec.bat. HTH lucky me I did not obtain the unofficial Q918899 patch for IE6 SP1. It needs to have ieuninst.exe, ieupdate.exe, mspatcha.dll files and that "SFX Manifest" file inside. And it also needs to have two INF files on there just like with KB916281 for IE6 SP1 under Win98/ME. Look at the KB916281 patch for Win98/ME and see how it works. I'll send another WEBVW.DLL file to MDGx for ME900725 which now has the missing WinME GIF and WinME HTML wallpaper "resources". I added the resources from original ME webvw.dll file using Resource Hacker.
  24. certainly Link21 has been a disgrace and an embarrassment to the Win9xME forums here and needs to pay the price [or should I say "suffer the consequences"] for his foolish comments. If he says he wants Firefox 3 to work only under NT-based versions of Windows, this is not the right place to say that. all right for those who have gotten Firefox 1.5.0.5 and have installed it under Win9xME, upgrade to 1.5.0.6 immediately as the makers of Firefox fixed other bugs that were not patched in 1.5.0.5. Beta 2 of Firefox 2.0 should be ready sometime next week.
  25. ok. is ME SP beta 6 ready yet?
