Let's make this clear... The modded driver ESDI_506.PDR: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=78592 compatible with Hard Drives (HD) larger than 137 GB is used by Windows 9x [95/98/ME] only if the hard drive(s) is/are (E)IDE/(U)ATA/(U)DMA [PATA] and only if the hard drive(s) is/are connected to the motherboard chipset (E)IDE controller(s) interface(s). The mobo chipset + mobo (E)IDE controller(s) must be 48-bit LBA compliant = they must support HDs > 137 GB. Otherwise, if the (E)/IDE/(U)ATA/(U)DMA [PATA] or SRAM USB [fake HD] drive(s) is/are connected to any other drive controller/interface, like SCSI, RAID, SATA, USB, FireWire etc, the modded ESDI_506.PDR driver does *not* apply. If using VIA [or any other non-Intel] motherboard chipsets, these usually install their own HD drivers, which [all newer versions] should be compatible with HDs > 137 GB. In such cases ESDI_506.PDR is *not* used. Glossary: http://www.mdgx.com/glossary.htm ATA = Advanced Technology Attachment (ANSI standard for Integrated Drive Electronics). EIDE = Enhanced Integrated Device Electronics (Hard Disk Drive interface). IDE = Integrated Device (Drive) Electronics (Hard Disk Drive interface). ATAPI = Advanced Technology Attachment Packet Interface. DMA = Direct Memory Access. U-ATA = Ultra Advanced Technology Attachment (EIDE/ATA disk controller/drive). UDMA = Ultra Direct Memory Access (EIDE/ATA disk controller/drive). Ultra ATA = Ultra Advanced Technology Attachment (EIDE/ATA disk controller/drive). Ultra DMA = Ultra Direct Memory Access (EIDE drive controller). SATA = Serial Advanced Technology Attachment Hard Disk Drive standard (Western Digital). PATA = Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment Hard Disk Drive standard. RAID = Redundant Array of Inexpensive (Independent) Disks. SCSI = Small Computers System Interface Hard Disk Drive standard. SRAM = Static Random Access Memory. USB = Universal Serial Bus standard. VIA = VIA Technologies (Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer). If you are using "mix-and-match" NVidia driver files from different versions, you may need to use all files from same version. Reboot when ready. Or... Get + install Startup CPL [freeware]: http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml and disable all NVidia/Nview entries from your registry + startup folder [if any]. Reboot when ready. Or... Maybe some NVidia driver files are corrupted. [?] Download the driver package + install it again: http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_81.98.html http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_archive.html Reboot when ready. HTH

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
I have updated OLEUP.EXE and [hopefully] fixed install problems with OLEDLG.DLL. Please try it again: Unofficial OLE Update 2.40.4528 for Windows 95/98/NT4/ME [512 KB, English]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/OLEUP.EXE Also... finally found the solution for the Time Zone DST updates problem, now they are completely automated: http://www.msfn.org/board/?s=&showtopi...st&p=638383 HTH -
Finally... took the DST updates [both English + Italian] to a new level and fixed the problem. No need to click OK [or ask for trouble if clicking Cancel for that matter] in the Date/Time CPL dialog box anymore... Now everything is completely automated, and now these updates can be included in other packages like Auto-Patcher, PowerPack, Service Packs etc. How... This Update uses Microsoft Daylight Saving Time Update Utility v1.01 from Windows 98 Resource Kit (RK) = TIMEZONE.EXE [6 KB]: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/services/technet/...ig/TIMEZONE.EXE to set the correct DST values into your registry completely unattended. INF code: And no need for a reboot/restart.Please test them here: * Unofficial Windows 95/OSR1/OSR2/98/98 SP1/98 SE/ME 2007 U.S.A. + Western Australian (Perth) Daylight Saving Time (DST) Cumulative Time Zone Update: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=931836 - English Update [112 KB]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/Q931836.EXE - Italian Update [115 KB]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/IT931836.EXE Of course, this can be translated into other (supported) languages if any1 wants to do it. 98SE2ME = Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Have you tried to install option 9 [the new option without WDM drivers]?Option 2 does install the WDM drivers [*.SYS] into %windir%\system32\drivers , but option 9 does not. Quoted from READ1ST.TXT [the "98SE2ME.PIF COMPLETE GUIDE" section]: READ1ST.TXT HTH Unfortunately I've followed instructions, but the problem remains. Make sure when you install option 9, your Win98 SE is "clean", without any other older 98SE2ME installs. If you have previously installed 98SE2ME options 1 or 2 in the past, make sure you backed up your OS, and then restored it. If you don't have a backup from before installing 98SE2ME, you may need to reinstall Win98 SE "clean". Only after that install 98SE2ME option 9. HTH -
Please see this security guide [everything except the hardware (which 1 may want to purchase) is free(ware)]: http://www.msfn.org/board/?s=&showtopi...st&p=297635 HTH

Actually those are next on my "to-do" list.

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
If you would like to create a French version [translate the scripts: INF, SED + TXT], I can send them to you.But make sure the DLLs you put in are the original French versions from M$. To obtain the French Win2000 OLE fix [where the 4528 files come from: English = http://support.microsoft.com/?id=139071 or French = http://support.microsoft.com/kb/139071/fr ], you could email M$, or Google them. This MSFN thread should help: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=31579 The 4522 file comes from Win2000 SP4, which can be obtained from M$ servers in all available languages: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downl...rvicepacks/sp4/ OLEUP.TXT lists all files and their builds [versions]: HTH -
Auto-Patcher For Windows 98se (English)
MDGx replied to soporific's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
soporific: If I may make a suggestion: If you'd like to add more options/system components/updates/etc to Auto-Patcher, you could add only the direct download URL links to the actual files [eventually with a short description], and let the user select which ones he/she wants to install. This way new add-ons won't increase the size of Auto-Patcher. HTH -

98SE2ME = Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
As stated in the 98SE2ME READ1ST.TXT guide [please see the "FAQ" section]:READ1ST.TXT none of the files installed by 98SE2ME change the OS core or kernel from 98 SE to ME. Therefore Win98 SE OS remains the same Win98 SE OS, WinME core/kernel/drivers files won't work, they will only lock up your computer. Moreover, this link [found in the quote above]:http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#NEVER clearly states: HTH [Hope This Helps] -
Thanks a lot for your feedback.I've tested this patch, and seems to work ok. The only problem is that it can be run [even if warnings to the contrary are posted clearly at the author's web site] on any Win32 OS [either 9x (95/98/ME) or NTx (NT4/2000/XP/2003/Vista)]. My installers on the other hand, can be run only on the target OS(es), because they are built using M$'s own iexpress installer package, which provides for specific target OS range, banning all others if necessary. On the good side, looks like Gary has a VBS file in his installer which probably alleviates the need for the do-it-by-hand timedate.cpl dialog box click, my installer still uses. But I've found [please see my reply to erpdude8 below] a command line tool [also free from M$] which could successfully replace all this stuff with a more elegant solution. I'm still testing it, but I should be posting it soon here. When I do, we should all have a viable, unattended [automated] fix anybody can use safely. P.S.: There is a dedicated topic here at MSFN: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=87399 which details all DST problems and all steps taken so far. HTH _____________________________________ erpdude8: I've updated the Win9x DST patches [both English + Italian] to not delete those registry entries anymore. All details + files here: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46581 P.S.: There is a command line tool from M$ Win98 Resource Kit that seems to work properly in unattended mode in order to replace the do-it-by-hand timedate.cpl dialog box thingy that needs to be clicked at end of install. TIMEZONE.EXE [6 KB]: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/services/technet/...ig/TIMEZONE.EXE I'll test timezone.exe some more, and will add it to the iexpress installers in the near future.HTH

The complete list of hotfixes & updates for Windows 98se

Congratulations for your hard work, this is now an [overdue] sticky. Keep it up. -
Very good idea.I've thought of this too, but I haven't decided yet which topics should be on the sticky list. I'll post a sticky when I have such list. Thanks.

All TTF files are identical with the ones from SP2 RC [previous edition] = these install as part of TTFPAK.EXE: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#TTF SERVICES [used in SERVIC9X.EXE + SERVICNT.EXE] = also identical. L3CODECP.ACM = identical version with XP SP2 [WMP9 for XP] but different file size [?]. Tested it, doesn't seem to work differently in any way. If anybody else wants to test this new L3CODECP.ACM file and compare with the other one, please let me know. Otherwise nothing else I've tested works with Win9x OSes. HTH

Thanks. Those 2 topics are still there, but their author/maintainer is not with MSFN anymore. Therefore development has stopped. These 2 fixes are included in automated Iexpress installers, though: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46581 also posted at my site: http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm HTH

I've noticed that your batch prompts the user for non-default "C:\Program Files" folder location. This can be accomplished easily without any prompts, thru command line Windows Script detection [using cscript.exe]. I use something like this in 98SE2ME [from O2.BAT = used to install options 1 + 2]: This way detection works always 100% no matter where the user has "C:\Program Files" [even on another drive/partition], and LFNs are also properly supported. This script uses also EXTRAC32.EXE, START.EXE + GETVER.EXE .
