Extract all files but make sure to keep the exact structure: folders + files. 5. Open the BAT, INF + TXT files to see which files are replaced/backed up/etc. 6. Get replaced files from the Win98 SE setup CD-ROM or CABs, or if newer versions available, get them by installing respective updates: http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#98SE 7. Unfortunately these patches/workarounds are meant only for NTx [Win2000/XP] OSes. To port such projects to Win9x requires probably a lot of work or worse, not possible.

Auto-Patcher For Windows 98se (English)
MDGx replied to soporific's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Actually the EXPLORER.EXE from Win98-to-ME-Stand-Alone:http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=96768 is from Gape's 98 SE SP2 2.01a: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=61749 This is the same file [EXPLORER.EXE 4.72.3612.1700 from IE 5.01 CABs modded with Win98 SE banner + Dr. Hoiby's 256 color shortcut icons patch] that installs also as 98SE2ME option 6 and as part of 98SE2ME options 1 + 2: http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXT Original [non-modded] EXPLORER.EXE 4.72.3612.1700 [English edition] can be downloaded from [right-click to save CAB]: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...en/IE4SHL95.CAB EXPLORER.EXE from WinME setup CD-ROM [CABs] is build 5.50.4134.100 and *requires* at least IE 5.5 [or newer] already installed. That's why WinME EXPLORER.EXE 5.50.4134.100 is part of 98SE2ME option 3 only [and not part of any other 98SE2ME options], because it's an entire different "beast". WinME EXPLORER.EXE *needs* all other files from 98SE2ME option 3, otherwise the 98 SE OS will lock up. But you [or I, or some1 else] can create a separate installer for all those WinME files [and eventually add USER32.DLL + USER.EXE 4.90.3001], and add that installer to the next release of Auto-Patcher, if you wish. If you do, please make sure to add the registry entries necessary for option 3 proper operation [from O3RES.INF = 98SE2ME option 3 install routine]: HTH -
98SE2ME = Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Auto-Patcher installs all [or almost all] available 98SE updates, including 98SE2ME.But some people complained that installing 98SE2ME from within Auto-Patcher results in errors. Therefore, to avoid such problems, you should (1) install Auto-Patcher without 98SE2ME, and (2) then install 98SE2ME separately [3 MB]: http://www.mdgx.com/4 98MP10 [i assumed that's the 1 you are referring to: "XP SP2 stuff"] is an unofficial WMP9 update to WMP10. Complete details: http://www.mdgx.com/98mp10/98MP10.TXT Download 98MP10 [7.5 MB]: http://www.mdgx.com/98mp10/98MP10.EXE 98MP10 forum: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=89934 I recommend to install 98MP10 among the last updates, because it requires WMP9 + IE 6.0 SP1. This is a Win98 SE update topic, therefore I am moving it to the proper subforum: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showforum=91 winxpi: Please let me know if you want to move it back. Of course, this topic is also part of the "sticky" list: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=95815 HTH

There is no SRCLIENT.DLL file on my WinME setup CD-ROM [u.S. English edition]. But XP has such file [found as SRCLIENT.DL_ in the \I386 subfolder] on the WinXP setup CD-ROM. Obviously, the XP file won't work with Win9x OSes. So maybe the M$ documentation refers to the WinXP System Restore. [?] Hope This Helps [HTH]

98SE2ME = Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Clarification:I strongly recommend to install 98SE2ME among the last on your updates list because it upgrades to system files newer than the ones from Win98 SE setup CD-ROM [doesn't matter that WinME setup CD-ROM files are 7 years old]. It's like installing a whole new mini-OS on top of 98 SE. 98SE2ME has nothing to do with WU [Windows Update] nor any other updates/(hot)fixes/patches, new, old, official or unofficial. It does not overwrite/replace any such files [to my knowledge; please let me know if it does, so I can remove them from 98SE2ME]. It only installs files that are *newer* than default ["stock"] Win98 SE. Complete details in READ1ST.TXT [see the "FAQ" section]: READ1ST.TXT HTH -

If that would have happened, they would have had released some kind of official statement, and as far as I can tell the web is "mum" on this subject.Have you tried to search for this subject using Google.com? And if that would be true, we, here at MSFN, we would be able to post any M$ file from setup CD-ROMs/floppies without having to worry about M$ lawyers telling us to take them down, don't you think? Maybe you should ask your "software guru" what is his source for this rumor... Just out of curiosity, you may want to learn how trustworthy your source really is.

These are the registry keys where these values should be, and you already have them in your REG file [checked using X-Setup Pro 6.6, freeware]:[HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings] "EnableHttp1_1"=dword:00000001 "DnsCacheEnabled"=dword:00000001 "MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server"=dword:00000008 "MaxConnectionsPerServer"=dword:00000010 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\MSTCP] "DefaultRcvWindow"="256960" "DefaultTTL"="64" "EnablePMTUBHDetect"="0" "EnablePMTUDiscovery"="0" "PMTUBlackHoleDetect"="0" "PMTUDiscovery"="1" "Tcp1323Opts"="1" "SackOpts"="1" "GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize"="256960" "KeepAliveTime"="7200000" "KeepAliveInterval"="1000"As you can see, there are also other settings you may wish to add to your REG file. Please let me know if you do, or if you wish to make any other changes, so I can also post the updated file at my web site. Most of these settings are detailed at this MSKB article: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=158474 I also have a bunch of related stuff at my web site [the ones for Win9x]: http://www.mdgx.com/modem.htm#MY Many thanks. -

MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
WMP9URP was created by erpdude8:* WMP9URP: Unofficial Windows Media Player 9.0 (WMP9) Update Rollup Pack (URP) for Windows 98/98 SE/ME installs ALL previously released WMP9 Hotfixes, Patches + Updates [8.56 MB, English]: http://www.mdgx.com/spx/WMP9URP.EXE How to install WMP9 on Windows 98: http://erpman1.tripod.com/cmptips2.html Because it installs only WMP files, WMP9URP should be installed after official WMP9 [without which doesn't install ] and before unofficial 98MP10 [which installs WMP10 files]. 98SE2ME does not install any WMP files, therefore it can be installed anytime. And I'm sure erpdude8 will answer these questions better when he returns to the forum. HTH -

Here is your answer from the anonymous author:http://www.msfn.org/board/?s=&showtopi...st&p=643822 Because it is everybody's right to be anonymous in a public forum or anywhere else on the internet for that matter, and as you might well know, some people are concerned about their privacy on the internet, as I'm sure you are too.Lety me ask you something: How can I trust to answer your questions, when I don't even know your real name? How do you trust to ask me any questions [and me to give you pertinent answers] when you don't even know my real name? Do you put your real name in every email account, public forum membership, ICQ, AOL/IM/MSN/Yahoo/etc messenger etc you subscribe to? I don't think so, because if you would, you would demostrate lack of knowledge about breach of privacy on the internet. And by looking at your MSFN nickname [handle], looks like you do know not to put your real name. But even though we don't know each other's real names, we still carry a civilized conversation, and implicitly we trust each other in the confines of this forum. Another question: just because Microsoft is a famous company name in the computing business do you trust them with your computer or with your privacy info? I know the majority here at MSFN do not, and you shouldn't either. I know the anonymous author has the knowledge and the preparedness [PhD degree] to fix/debug/patch M$ system files, and that's enough as far as I'm concerned. But you don't have to download/try/install/read any of these patches/files if you don't want to. That is only your choice. And it is my choice to trust the anonymous author. And we also must respect his wish of remaining anonymous. Here is your answer from the anonymous author:http://www.msfn.org/board/?s=&showtopi...st&p=643822 HTH [Hope This Helps]
