  1. Thanks a lot for your appreciation.I hope you enjoy 98SE2ME. To answer your questions: 1. Autoexec.bat is used to run batch files right after (re)boot but before Windows GUI starts [win.com]. But after those batch files complete their run, the modded autoexec.bat is deleted and replaced with original [unmodified] autoexec.bat [if any]. 2. The WinME files installed by 98SE2ME into C:\9!M are extracted from the installer, which is built using InnoSetup [ http://www.jrsoftware.org/isinfo.php ], which in turn uses 7-zip compression to shrink files to maximum compression ratio available. This is detailed in READ1ST.TXT: READ1ST.TXT under the "UNINSTALL 98SE2ME" section, and also in INNOFILE.TXT [part of INNOFILE.ZIP]: http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/INNOFILE.ZIP Whenever 1 runs the main batch [98SE2ME.PIF], and then selects an option, necessary files are copied from C:\9!M to respective target directories, and necessary files [if any] are extracted from WinME CABs, which must be present for most options. Disk space taken by 98SE2ME installation files is ~ 9 MB. After installing desired option(s), 98SE2ME can be completely uninstalled, thus freeing that disk space. 3. Complete 98SE2ME guide is here [in plain TXT format]: READ1ST.TXT See the "98SE2ME.PIF COMPLETE GUIDE" section for details on all installed components [8 options total]. Same READ1ST.TXT pops up whenever one installs 98SE2ME, or any options. 4. Win98 SE also accepts certain NT4/2000/XP/2003 drivers, even better after installing 98SE2ME options 1, 2 or 8. HTH

  5. Windows ME has only 1 version of ESDI_506.PDR and that is 4.90.3000 . The original one [unpatched] can be extracted from the Windows ME Setup CD-ROM or CABs by using this DOS command from any DOS prompt box/session/window:EXTRACT /Y WIN_19.CAB /L %windir%\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS ESDI_506.PDR %windir% = usually C:\WINDOWS . This driver must exist into the %windir%\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS subfolder. The patched one can be installed by running the executable called ME48BLBA.EXE [see link below]: * Unofficial Windows ME 48-bit LBA (Logical Block Addressing) > 137 GB (E)IDE/ATAPI Hard Disk Driver ESDI_506.PDR 4.90.3000 Fix: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=78592 Direct download [143 KB, English]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/ME48BLBA.EXE Patched driver listed here: http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#MEU One way to check a Windows file version [only if the version function is built into the file] is to download and use getver.exe [free GPL], a DOS box [Windows console] command line tool: http://lbrisar.htmlplanet.com/e_cmd32.html#getver HTH
  6. Have you tried it?If you did, does it work ok in Win98 SE? I have not tested it [yet].
  7. Updated [220 KB]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/USB20DRV.EXE Replaced newer USBPORT.SYS with older 5.00.2195.5652 . HTH
  8. You can always test them yourself [222 KB]:http://www.mdgx.com/files/USB20DRV.EXE Experimental = for Windows 98 SE + ME only: test if it works. If it doesn't = restore original files as instructed further below. This iexpress installer copies these 3 newer files from Windows 2000 Fix: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=838989 to %windir%\system32\drivers : USBEHCI.SYS 5.00.2195.6882 USBHUB20.SYS 5.00.2195.6891 USBPORT.SYS 5.00.2195.6926 INF [uSB20DRV.INF] tweaked to force install on WinME [work around SR/WFP (System Restore/Windows File Protection)]. To restore original drivers: Start button -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> select "Unofficial USB 2.0: Restore original drivers" -> click Add/Remove button. HTH
  9. Mrcldb: Many thanks for the clarification. Best wishes.
  10. I would have to quote soporific on this one: Until then, please [when you have enough time] improve the project, and please post a "usable" form, for example an iexpress installation executable, BATch file/executable, ZIPped archive, etc.Something you should consider: Most of us, here at MSFN, are familiar with the English language, but very few are familiar with Dutch = your HTML guide is in Dutch. Maybe you would like to translate it into English so we can all read it? I've also looked [only briefly] at your ZIP download. My conclusion is that this project looks like an excellent idea, but so far only in theory. IMHO: It looks like you put those files and the html guide together in a rush, mainly to persuade me to make your topic a "sticky". It also looks like you are doing this for the purpose of showing off and/or get a good grade in your computer/whatever class/school. What I think: if you want to have a project everybody can use [and that you can be proud of], you need to work hard and take enough time for putting it all together. Another issue you need to know about: I'm actually debating which / how many projects to make "sticky" in this forum, because it is very hard to choose. We already have a bunch of great ones, like: WinME SP1, Win98 FE SP2, KernelXP [seems to be abandoned though ;(], Copy2GB, IDE driver > 137 GB HD, Auto-Patcher, Power Pack, Complete List of Updates, MDCU, MDCUPL, MDIE6CU etc, etc..., and if you ask me, they all deserve to be "stickified". Back to your project: You just started it, it is still in an "embrionic" stage, and it looks like it will be time consuming and hard-work-demanding project. And the main problem is that it is not ready for "prime time". Please keep working on it [take your time, don't rush], and when your project is in a "working" stage, I'll consider it as a "sticky". A "to do" list = your project needs to... 1. work from a single executable/batch/installer/etc. 2. be thoroughly tested by as many users as possible to fix as many bugs as possible "in the wild" [test it on as many computers as possible]. 3. have clear, easy to understand [eventually step by step] guide in easy to read format: text or html, in a language we all understand: English. Such guide should be [preferably] included with the installer, so a user can download everything in 1 file [if possible, and if file size is not too large]. 4. have good understanding of GNU/GPL/GPL2/creative commons or whatever other kind of free open source license you want your project to abide by. 5. and if you need help, always ask, we are eager to help, here at MSFN forums. FYI: When you add a link to an HTML web page [your guide] into a MSFN forum post, you don't need to make it an attachment, because html files are meant to be read, not downloaded. And if any1 wants to download it, I'm sure most of us know how to save a web page using our web browsers or whatever other dedicated tools. I hope you agree with my assesment. Good luck + Best wishes.

  13. You need to read the ReadMe text file [98MP10.TXT = the "EXTREMELY IMPORTANT" section] for explanation why this happens:http://www.mdgx.com/98mp10/98MP10.TXT FYI: 98MP10.TXT always pops up whenever you install 98MP10 as 1st installation step. HTH
  14. Hello, rodrigo_rds, and welcome to MSFN forums. As I have told Eck, to my knowledge the explorer problem is not related to 98MP10. HTH

  16. NL-Stitch: I have moved your topic to this sub-forum, as requested. But in order to make it sticky [at least in my opinion], some of us need to see some kind of finished product, even if it says "alpha" or "pre-beta". As I said in my post [last paragraph]: http://www.msfn.org/board/?s=&showtopi...st&p=613589 some sort of scripts, batches, snipets etc would be nice if you can upload. After all, open source software is improved/de-bugged/fixed/etc mainly by being tested by as many users as possible. If anybody else has any other opinions about this subject, please post here. HTH
  17. No, rebooting will *not* update your Time Zone correctly. You *must* answer OK to the Date/Time Properties dialog box, exactly as instructed. Or if you wish to do this manually, follow these steps exactly: 1. Do *NOT* reboot/restart/shut down/log off after installing unofficial Q929120.EXE [English] or IT929120.EXE [italian]. 2. Open Control Panel -> Date/Time applet -> click OK in your correct time zone, which should be already selected. 3. Done. 4. Now it's OK to reboot/restart/shut down/log off if you wish. If you reboot/restart/shut down/log off after installing unofficial Q929120.EXE [English] or IT929120.EXE [italian] but *before* performing steps above, your Date/Time applet dialog box will revert back to Windows 9x/ME *default* Time Zone [GMT] or to the one for the particular language/geographical zone where you reside or for which you installed Windows in [in my case it defaults to "(GMT) Casablanca, Monrovia, Reykjavik", probably because it has the REG value "MapID"="0,1" , which makes it 1st in line (?)], and this time zone is the INcorrect one. At this point you need to reconfigure your own time zone manually from scratch: select the correct one from the list. FYI: The only other way to update/edit/change Time Zones in Windows 95/98/ME is to use TZEDIT.EXE (Time Zone Editor), part of: * Windows 98 Resource Kit (RK): ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/services/technet/.../reskit/config/ TZEDIT.EXE [newest TZEDIT.EXE 1.0.01] [41 KB]: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/services/technet/...nfig/TZEDIT.EXE TZEDIT.CNT [254 B]: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/services/technet/...nfig/TZEDIT.CNT TZEDIT.HLP [10 KB]: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/services/technet/...nfig/TZEDIT.HLP * Windows 95/98 Setup CD-ROMs [newest TZEDIT.EXE 1.0.01]: - \TOOLS\RESKIT\CONFIG = Windows 98 (Final/Gold/First Edition (FE)] + 98 Second Edition (SE) - \ADMIN\APPTOOLS\TZEDIT = Windows 95B/95C OSR 2.x: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=158195 * MS Kernel Toys 95 [older TZEDIT.EXE 4.00.950]: http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloa...s/w95kerneltoy/ W95KRNLTOYS.EXE [57 KB, English, free, unsupported]: http://download.microsoft.com/download/c/1...W95KRNLTOYS.EXE But TZEDIT.EXE is only a graphical tool, does NOT support command line parameters/switches, and that's why it canNOT be used in BAT/INF files for automated/batch/unattended installs. Example of Time Zone registry changes: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=886775 HTH No, tzchange.exe is strictly an NTx [2000/XP/2003] OS tool. The way Date/Time is set in NTx Oses is completely different than in 9x [95/98/ME] OSes. 21. Very good point. If we wish to use Windows 98 Gold/FE (First Edition), 98 SE (Second Edition) and/or ME (Millennium Edition) into the future, we all need to consider doing this as soon as possible. This thread is now "stickified" ["pined"].
  22. CARDS.DLL is used by M$ Solitaire, MSHearts and probably by FreeCell, all card games [if these are what you are referring to] installed by M$ Windows. CARDS.DLL can be extracted from the CABs, found either in %windir%\OPTIONS\CABS or on your Windows Setup CD-ROM. Example if you have the Windows 98 SE Setup CD-ROM: 1. Place the CD inside your 1st CD/DVD drive [if you have more than 1]. 2. Run this command from any DOS prompt: EXTRACT /A /Y D:\WIN98\WIN98_61.CAB /L %winbootdir%\SYSTEM CARDS.DLL If you have the Windows ME (Millennium Edition) Setup CD-ROM: EXTRACT /A /Y D:\WIN9X\WIN_10.CAB /L %winbootdir%\SYSTEM CARDS.DLL Make sure D: above is your CD/DVD drive letter, change if otherwise. If you have all CABs in %windir%\OPTIONS\CABS , point to that directory instead: EXTRACT /A /Y %winbootdir%\OPTIONS\CABS\WIN98_61.CAB /L %winbootdir%\SYSTEM CARDS.DLL This way CARDS.DLL will be extracted and copied to %windir%\SYSTEM , where it belongs. FYI: %windir% is same as %winbootdir% = environment variables set by the Windows OS at boot time. Both usually default to C:\WINDOWS on standard Win9x installs. Last 1 is used only in native MS-DOS mode, outside Windows. BTW: CARDS.DLL from WinME works OK with Windows 98 [Gold = First Edition (FE)] + 98 SE card games. HTH [Hope This Helps]
  23. These updates are made by Microsoft [all except NT4 patch].The clue is in looking at the server name in the links: download.windowsupdate.com That is the M$ server where you can d/l Windows Updates [WU]: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ Therefore, you need to write M$ about these patches: http://www.microsoft.com/contactus/ But the chance they will even respond or do anything about this is slim, please remember that M$ discontinued support for all 9x [Windows 95/98/ME] based OSes: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/support/endofsupport.mspx http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/ http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/ More info @ my site: http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm HTH [Hope This Helps]
  24. NL-Stitch: A few things you might wish to change/update/add: SongBird is designed for and works only with Windows 2000/XP/2003 [and eventually Vista in future releases]. More info @ their home page: http://www.songbirdnest.com/ ADS Client: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#ADS installs newer MSNET32.DLL than the 1 from Q245729: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=245729 which you link to on your drivers page: http://jackhammer.wikispaces.com/Device+Drivers Please consider adding another resource to your "+ Standard installed updates, drivers etc." page: http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm This link is invalid: http://www.drivermedia.nl/USB98.zip USB for DOS links + drivers [all free]: http://www.mdgx.com/drv.htm#DRV USB Drivers web site requires [free] registration for downloading any file: http://www.usb-drivers.com/ You need to mention this at your web page: http://jackhammer.wikispaces.com/Device+Drivers The W98SE2ME name is actually 98SE2ME without a "W", and its home page is here: http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/ or here if you prefer: http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#KRM9S I haven't noticed a link to 98MP10, you may wish to add 98MP10 to your list of enhancements/replacements/patches/updates: http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm#98MP10 If you want to browse through a list of free(ware) software [majority for Windows 95/98/ME]: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm Firewalls + Antispyware tools: http://www.mdgx.com/fw.htm Antivirus tools: http://www.mdgx.com/vir.htm Benchmarks + performance tools: http://www.mdgx.com/speed.htm Programming + tweaking tools [like InnoSetup = similar to NSIS installer]: http://www.mdgx.com/bin.htm ... And a page with DOS tools [free(ware)]: http://www.mdgx.com/dos.htm FYI: MSBATCH.INF links + downloads: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#DEV INF + SED scripts [iexpress] links + downloads: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#INF I haven't seen a page with scripts for download or snipets/code of scripts/quotes or similar. I hope you plan on posting such scripts/snipets/code. That would be very helpful, especially for others who wish to do something similar with their installations and/or start their own projects [because I understand your project is "open source" = for everybody to be able to download/copy it and/or parts of it]. I understand your project wants to be somewhat similar to Nlite [but more comprehensive], and to include scripts to install unattended Windows 98 SE [this can be extended to Win98 Gold (FE) and/or WinME if you wish, procedures are very similar] from a unified CD-ROM [you may wish to try to load up everything on 1 CD if possible, and if not, consider also the DVD format, which works in an identical way from native MS-DOS], which would include free(ware) apps + tools, drivers, patches etc. And if you plan on uploading ISO(s) and/or ZIP(s) of all files necessary to build the install CD(s)/DVD(s), please let us know, eventually post such links in this MSFN forum. HTH [Hope This Helps]
  25. Be careful there with the VER command. Some users [for example PsycoUnc] prefer to use a 3rd party shell environment which replaced COMMAND.COM, like 4DOS: http://www.jpsoft.com/download.htm#free Direct download [1.22 MB, Windows based installer, freeware]: http://download.jpsoft.com/4dos/4dos.exe More info: ftp://ftp.jpsoft.com/4dos/files/readme.txt 4DOS lines in CONFIG.SYS to replace COMMAND.COM [use INSTALLHIGH only if using an upper memory area (UMA) manager like UMBPCI.SYS or EMM386.EXE or QEMM386.SYS or RM386.EXE]: In such cases, VER returns something like this [example]:4DOS version 7.50 Therefore in such cases VER is not useful for detecting the Windows version from DOS. The only solutions I know of to work around this problem: A. use a 3rd party DOS tool which can detect DOS version independent of installed shell environment [good place to start]: http://short.stop.home.att.net/freesoft/ More like this here: http://www.mdgx.com/dos.htm#DOL B. or: - backup original config.sys [rename it to let's say CONFIG.A-P]. - add this line to CONFIG.SYS from within a batch file using ECHO: ECHO SHELL=C:\COMMAND.COM C:\ /E:1024 /P /F>>C:\CONFIG.SYS or from within an advanced INF: [Version] AdvancedINF=2.5 [DefaultInstall] UpdateCfgSys=CONFIGSYS.Section [CONFIGSYS.Section] ; if COMMAND.COM located in C:\ root: SHELL=%31%\COMMAND.COM %31%\ /E:1024 /P /F ; or if COMMAND.COM located in %windir% : SHELL=%10%\COMMAND.COM %10%\ /E:1024 /P /F Then, after your app does its thing, you can prompt the user to reboot in order to restore their original CONFIG.SYS . But this last solution is problematic, there cannot be 2 SHELL= lines in CONFIG.SYS. So you may want to completely replace their config.sys [after you back it up] with a custom one. Easy to spot 4DOS into memory, if you wish: mem /c | find /i "4DOS" IF ERRORLEVEL 1 GOTO Label_1 IF ERRORLEVEL 0 GOTO Label_2 HTH
