98SE2ME = Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Not possible, unless you're willing to hex-edit C:\IO.SYS .And 98SE2ME does not replace IO.SYS, because the 1 from WinME is incompatible [again, without hex-edit]. Please see this guide for more details: http://www.mdgx.com/msdos.htm#MEN HTH -
Good news [hopefully]... RIAA + MPAA [out of all companies ] plan on selling music [+ eventually movies] on the internet *without* DRM or any other copy protection scheme. I don't have that link anymore, but I bet it's still available on http://www.digg.com/ EMI [largest music label in Europe and 1 of the 4 major music labels]: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMI is already in the middle of releasing unprotected music for download thru their official channels. Don't know what's with that one. The _llseek doesn't even look like it was fixed.Edit: This problem doesn't affect explorer.exe in WinME so maybe that file is just a dummy. Actually the KERNEL32.DLL patch installed by C2GBME.EXE does the same as the LLXX KERNEL32.DLL patch (quoted from the anonymous author's notes, which pops up whenever you install C2GBME.EXE): HTH

My 2 ¢ DX 9.0c [same as all other 8.xx + 9.xx versions] should install backward compatible DX7 APIs. Any app/game/tool/driver using older DX7 interface should work ok. If it doesn't, then it is poor programming. HTH

98SE2ME = Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
1. I still use a DOS batch system [and an INF sub-system where applicable], INF system by itself is too primitive to cover all functions.2. Backups are created only if you wish to [you have 99 seconds to press N (No) if you don't want to backup], and only if you install 98SE2ME for the 1st time [and if it doesn't detect any older backups]. Unofficial Root Certificates 2007 Update
MDGx replied to erpdude8's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
I don't think such [but I may be wrong] problems/errors generated at different web sites are related to the root certificates installed by these updates [most recent one should have newest valid certificates].To determine if root certificates have been installed on Windows 9x: 1. Make sure you are running Windows using the registry files from before applying any of these updates [restore from REG backups if necesary (if any)]. 2. Start button -> Run box -> type regedit -> press Enter or click OK -> highlight "My Computer" main tree -> click on the "Registry" menu item -> select "Export Registry File..." -> type REGOLD.REG (or whatever filename you wish, just keep the .REG extension) in the "File name" field -> browse to the drive and folder where you want REGOLD.REG to reside -> click the Save button. 3. Run this root certificates update [i recommend this one as being most recent]: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...64cff75229e.exe 4. Start button -> Run box -> type regedit -> press Enter or click OK -> highlight "My Computer" main tree -> click on the "Registry" menu item -> select "Export Registry File..." -> type REGNEW.REG (or whatever filename you wish, just keep the .REG extension) in the "File name" field -> browse to the drive and folder where you want REGNEW.REG to reside -> click the Save button. 5. Compare the 2 REG files side by side [to see all differences in your registry after installing root certificates] using a graphical windiff type of tool [the one from M$ Win98 Resource Kit does just fine = free], to use it you must download the 3 files below: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/services/technet/...FILE/GUTILS.DLL ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/services/technet/...ILE/WINDIFF.EXE ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/services/technet/...ILE/WINDIFF.HLP See all 3 files above: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/services/technet/...98/reskit/FILE/ or by running FC.EXE command line DOS tool [which should reside into %windir%\COMMAND , where %windir% = usually C:\WINDOWS] from a DOS box/session/window (example): FC REGOLD.REG REGNEW.REG FC help screen is obtained by running: FC /? None of these root certs updates install any files, they just modify the registry, deleting old/obsolete/outdated certs and installing new ones.Therefore registry comparison side by side if the the only way to determine such changes. That is except if using RegMon [free]: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysintern...ies/regmon.mspx which monitors in the background all registry changes, and displays them in real time [formerly by SysInternals, now belongs to M$]. I don't think Gmail [Google mail] errors are related to root certs, I just tried Gmail using Win98 SE + MS IE 6.0 SP1 with all updates installed [+ the previous root certs update from October 2006, not newest one from February 2007], and had no errors. Actually the previous root certs update [that one installed properly on all Win32 OSes] was released sometimes in October 2006 if memory serves. HTH -
98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
I had no trouble installing February DX 9.0c on Windows 98SE. Of course you haven't.But you only installed the D3DX9_xx.DLL [xx = 2 digit numbers from 24 up to 31] files, which do not install if you don't have DX 9.0c pre-installed. Have you noticed that your Windows OS did not reboot after install completed? That's because DX core APIs did not install at all. So you only installed the useless MDX (Managed DirectX) files, which do not have any function, unless you use MDX to build + distribute DX applications/games. The actual DX 9.0c core APIs for Windows 98/98 SE/ME do not install, because they are not included in the Feb 2007 release: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...cd-464ef59da050 They should be in the BDA.CAB + DIRECTX.CAB files, which are missing from Feb 2007 release. Dec 2006 is the last DX release that includes and installs DX core APIs on Windows 98/98 SE/ME OSes: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...78-033D9E6C626B Managed DirectX [MDX] info @ MSDN: http://msdn.microsoft.com/theshow/episode....37/manifest.xml MDX requires NFR 1.1 or newer already installed: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#NFR FYI: Try this: install DX CPL tools: http://www.mdgx.com/dx.htm#SDK and then open Control Panel -> DirectX -> click the Managed tab. Do you see anything inside the "DirectX for Managed Code" box? Don't worry if you don't, you don't need MDX. HTH -

PROBLEMCHYLD: Hosts.exe It does not replace nor backup the original so it means it does not copy at allUpdated HOSTS installers, please check them out:http://www.mdgx.com/html.htm I've tested them both on my 98 SE + XP SP2 system, they work ok. HTH When i install on Win2000 it just hangs at cmd.exe screenUpdate #2 [released much later tonite]:I've modified [again, 2nd time] the installers [built using MakeSFX.exe (free GPL): http://www.disoriented.com/FreeExtractor/] to detect the OS from within the BATch instead of the INF, and should work ok now, no matter which Win32 OS you have [9x or NTx]. Please try these files again at your convenience: http://www.mdgx.com/files/HOSTS0.EXE http://www.mdgx.com/files/HOSTS127.EXE Tested with 98 SE + XP SP2. HTH -
Unofficial Root Certificates 2007 Update
MDGx replied to erpdude8's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Clarifications:1. Just because there is no warning/dialog box/prompt/etc, that doesn't mean the installers don't work. M$ designed all these installer executables to install completely unattended [require no intervention/reboot/anything from the user]. Except for this file: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...en/rootsupd.exe which works only with NTx OSes [XP, 2003 + Vista], all others work with 9x OSes [98, 98 SE + ME]. That is because rootsupd.exe above is built using a newer version of iexpress, which works only with XP, 2003 + Vista. To learn about iexpress.exe, wextract.exe + makecab.exe and how M$ builds installers [you can do this too, BTW ], please see these links + downloads at my web page: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#IEA 2. The files within these Root Certificates installers [respectively the *.SST files] are almost identical [except the authroots.sst file which has a slightly different file size, but otherwise installs identical certificates on all OSes], and they install the most recent Roots Certificates, except for this file: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...658a4f6d589.exe which installs older certificates [outdated]. 3. These 2 files: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...f144720f759.exe and: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...64cff75229e.exe have different file sizes [because of the different file size of the authroots.sst file contained inside them], but they both install identical [most recent] certificates on all 9x + NTx OSes [see list above]. 4. This unofficial file: http://www.mdgx.com/files/RTCERTUP.EXE which I have later on removed from my site [and which now redirects to this web page: http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#RCF instead of returning a 404 HTTP error ], is not necessary anymore, because erpdude8 discovered the official M$ file that works the same, and which installs the most recent Certificates on all OSes [see above]: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...64cff75229e.exe That's why my web page: http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#RCF now links to the only official M$ file you need. Amount of installed memory is not an issue here. Number of installed CPUs is. My 2 ¢ : "XMS cache memory" error probably means HIMEM.SYS can't access I/O DMA memory, because on SMP (Symmetrical MultiProcessing) systems with more than 1 CPU that memory area is not available for DOS devices/TSRs. In such cases must disable all CPUs [if more than 1] in BIOS Setup [if mobo BIOS allows it] except for 1 CPU. Then install Windows 9x or MS-DOS again. HTH

98SE2ME = Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
1. All those files are backups of files that are replaced by 98SE2ME options.READ1ST.TXT explains what they do, which files they back up, how to restore original files by using those renamed files, and how to delete those backups if you wish: READ1ST.TXT 2. The only purpose of 98SE2ME is to upgrade Win98 SE to WinME level. Therefore it does not install 3rd party apps, games, tools, tweaks etc. This is explained in READ1ST.TXT under the "FAQ" section: READ1ST.TXT 3. I chose PFE [Programmer's File Editor] because has features no other Notepad replacement has. Among other unique features: it is the only text editor I've seen which opens huge text files fast, without "choking". Of course, it is a matter of personal preference which text editor one wants to use. PFE is installed only by options 1 and 5. Option 2 [main option which installs the ~ 700 WinME files] does not install PFE. HTH -

Any web page [html document] can be viewed or saved [copied to clipboard] from any web site [even the ones with frames, like mine], if using:- MS Internet Explorer: right-click on plain text [without links] on the page you want to view [even inside frames] -> select Properties -> see Address: (URL) -> triple-click on top of the actual URL to highlight it entirely -> right-click -> click Copy -> then paste URL into address box in any web browser or text/doc application. - Firefox/Mozilla: right-click on plain text [without links] on the page you want to view [even inside frames] -> select This Frame -> click Show Only This Frame -> this will show the frame [web page] URL in the address box, you can then cut + paste. - Opera: similar way.
