  6. The list is only a simple post [text], not a thread of posts in the forum, so there is no way to do that, unless one does it by hand whenever a topic is updated. Would you like to volunteer?
  7. Done: * Replaced systray.exe with older 4.10.2224 from NUSB = and replaced ugly IDI_PCMCIA icon. * Deleted option 9. HTH
  8. No, it's not.The reality is that some of us use 98, 98 SE and/or ME, just not 95/OSR1/OSR2 anymore. That's why we cannot test/build such patches under Win95. But please feel free to test it on your 95 computer, and if it works ok, I'll modify the installer to include all Win95 editions. Thanks for your time. About the U891711 patch being just another process: That's the only way this vulnerability can be fixed as far as I'm aware [from what I'm told by the anonymous author]. If you have any better ideas, have knowledge of how this exploit works in Win95 and/or earlier editions of Internet Explorer [32 and/or 16 bit], and eventually which system file(s) need to be patched [permanently], please don't hesitate to post here your patch(es), results, thoughts etc. HTH [Hope This Helps]

Instead, I suggest [if you are the topic creator] you: - edit + update the 1st post of each topic; - add the date + the new version/build [if appropriate] into each topic subtitle; to let every1 know when/why you posted a new update/edition/build/release/version/etc. But if for any reason you need to create a new topic, please PM me with the new URL so I can add it to this list. Thanks for understanding, and keep up your outstanding work. Enjoy.

  14. Thanks a lot for finding the "culprits".About systray.exe: I don't even use systray.exe [M$ bloat ] anymore. Not necessary on my computer. I've deleted it. About sounds.cpl: Sounds.cpl from WinME [renamed from mmsys.cpl] is the additional multimedia + audio CPL [control panel applet], but the default one from Win98 SE called mmsys.cpl is still there in %windir%\system , so no problem, if sounds.cpl doesn't work for whatever reason, you always have the original mmsys.cpl to play with. After all, sounds.cpl is there to perform only 1 function: to access the Voice tab, otherwise not available in Win98 SE mmsys.cpl. Quoted from READ1ST.TXT [from the "98SE2ME.PIF COMPLETE GUIDE" section]: READ1ST.TXT So please let me know... if I understand correctly, the WinME .SYS [WDM] drivers installed in %windir%\system32\drivers by options 1 + 2 work ok on your computer with your sound card chipset? Because if they do, option 9 is not necessary at all, and I'll remove it when I post the next update. I'll also remove systray.exe 4.90.3002 and replace it with modded 4.10.2224 from NUSB 3.1 English, in which I have replaced the ugly IDI_PCMCIA icon group with SHELL32.DLL icon group 312 from WinXP SP2 [feature requested by PROBLEMCHYLD a while back, and implemented also into WinME systray.exe 4.90.3002]. 16. This install order works, as well as others, I don't think there is a strict order list.As a rule of thumb, try to install older updates/packs/enhancements/etc first, and newer last. Also, I recommend to install most official updates first [contain older files anyway] and unofficial ones last [contain newer files]. HTH

Then please post here your results afterwards. Thanks.
  18. Sorry, mate.I can't test this, I don't have the necessary hardware. Please try to eliminate 1 file at a time if you have the time, and then post here if you find which file(s) cause this problem. HTH
  19. Sorry, I have no experience with SATA in Win9x.But I know that if Win9x doesn't properly recognize the SATA controller [or whatever other drive controller] as a "familiar" [iDE or other standard] drive, it will default to the slower "MS-DOS compatibility mode", and will eventually ask for a better driver to match the hardware. Even if a SATA controller appears as a fake (E)IDE controller to the Win9x device manager, in certain cases ESDI_506.PDR cannot correctly map the drive, depending on the specific SATA controller manufacturer, because some don't care to provide backward compatibility with IDE/ATAPI [PATA] standards. But if using a SATA-to-(E)IDE converter hooked directly into the drive interface to connect the SATA drive to the standard mobo (E)IDE controller [instead of connecting the SATA drive to the SATA controller, either in RAID or normal mode, that doesn't matter], then any SATA drive will appear as standard (E)IDE, and the ESDI_506.PDR driver will recognize and use it. HTH
  20. You don't need any 3rd party software to disconnect from the internet in Win98 SE [or any other 9x (95/98/ME) OS for that matter]. Here are 3 simple ways you can do this: 1. Install a free(ware) firewall [if you haven't already] and use it to block all [both incoming + outgoing] traffic: http://www.mdgx.com/fw.htm#FWL Example: If using Kerio 2.1.5 -> right-click its taskbar icon -> left-click "Stop All Traffic". Kerio 2.1.5 [2.06 MB, English]: http://www.gwdg.de/samba/windows/persfw/ke....1.5-en-win.exe No need for reboot. 2. This is for cable modems only. Example: Right-click "My Computer" desktop icon -> Properties -> Device Manager -> expand [double-click] Network adapters -> hightlight your Ethernet adapter name connected to your cable modem -> double-click it -> check the "Disable in this hardware profile" box -> click OK -> reboot/restart Windows when prompted. Needs reboot. xDSL modem owners can do this in a similar way. Please keep in mind that xDSL modems use a WAN [Wide Area Network] adapter. 3. This is for cable modems only. Just move to any other location the Ethernet adapter driver file, found in most cases in %windir%\SYSTEM [%windir% = usually C:\WINDOWS]. Example: I'm using a Siemens SpeedStream USB 10/100 Ethernet Adapter, which uses 1001.SYS as its driver. You can write a DOS style batch file to move the driver file away [or back] with a single mouse click. Using Notepad, create a new text file, and call it InternetOFF.BAT (example): InternetOFF.BAT also reboots after moving away the driver. To restore the driver, create another batch file called InternetON.BAT (example): Needs reboot.xDSL modem owners can do this in a similar way. HTH [Hope This Helps]
  21. soporific: If I may make a suggestion: your link points to C:\WINDOWS\WUPDMGR.EXE . Some people [i'm 1 of them] have Windows installed in a different folder/drive. Some people [i'm 1 of them] do not have wupdmgr.exe anymore. Is it possible to add code to your batch file to detect the presence of wupdmgr.exe [no matter where it would be located], and only after that to install the link file? To my knowledge wupdmgr.exe only opens IE and points it to WU: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ HTH
  22. PeteK27: Please keep in mind that the title of this topic is "Security in Windows 98". IMHO: In this context, the word "security" implies that all computer users nowadays [unless never using the internet or a network to connect/share] should protect themselves [their data or even their hardware] from attacks usually generated over the internet and/or networks. On the other hand, being smart/learning how to protect/back up one's data from corruption, "man made"/"nature made" accidents/disasters/etc consist separate subjects. If you wish to open such a topic, please do so, but please read first other similar topics that may already exist here, at MSFN forums, to make sure we do not post/link to information that has been discussed before. And besides, most of us here are Win98 or WinME users, and we already know that these OSes are becoming less and less of a target for internet based attacks nowadays, but we still prefer to use them anyway. That's why we post stuff like this, and that's why we create unofficial [security] patches for our OSes, even if we know M$ and everybody else stopped supporting them. Best wishes. HTH
  23. It's not that easy. Editing INFs or repacking installers are not the problem, we do it here all the time. But video and audio drivers [especially] for NTx OSes rely upon WinNTx APIs [not found or very different (read not compatible) in 9x OSes] to work properly, therefore those do not work in 9x OSes. Therefore each driver has to be tested to work with 9x OSes, and that is possible only if you have the appropriate hardware device installed in your computer. HTH
  24. Try to place another copy of unicows.dll in %windir%\system32 [%windir% = usually C\WINDOWS]. Do not delete the one from %windir%\system . HTH
