  1. did you try http://www.mdgx.com ??? i know there are some tweaks that can help with more resources but ultimately if your worried about resources goto xp or 2000 i use programs like that but i have lotsa tweaks applied and the lowest i've gone is 33% resources and thats running lotsa apps, did you apply ie 6 and newest directx? also the win9x line is plaqued by resource problems, you can do what you can but ultimately theres not much you can do about the resource problem,xp,2000 are immune to this problem sorry to say.sides your specs you could run xp nicely if you got one lying around
  2. win me should have been better with 2000 enhancements but i bet cuzz of it still being based partly on dos and the mixture of nt plus dos kernel=not a good combo, thats my theory why was 98 better and 2000 better?simple,2000 doesen't run off of the old dos kernel and 98 doesen't have any of win 2000's enhancements a tried experiment gone bad, windows 3.1 was good when it was around(thats when it was,now you hardly see it around.
  3. oh that's right and ie 6 should indeed my manditory ie 5.5 is showing it's age and ie 5.01 as well
  4. the ie 5.5 updates are too old and ie 5.5 itself, time to start thinking about ie 6 and it's updates and not ie 5.5 unless ppl want that old browser(i don't plus i can't use it cuzz my apps need ie 6)
  5. CLASYS does have a point, memory is obviously going to age, there was the old ram and now the sdram now the ddr n whats next?maybe ram thats built in to the mobo
  6. zoem is would make perfect sense to include ie 6 and and it's updates and remove the ie 5.5 updates cuzz ms don't support ie 5.5 anymore, firefox is open source, opera is not,i trust opera more than firefox, open source has it's advantages and disadvantages and same goes for closed source but closed source usualy tends to be better at times the wmp and dx updates are not needed as those can be dled seperately, maybe gape could improve his partial slipstreaming to include hotfixes and the ability to add wmp and dx and there updates
  7. longhorn is still alpha, theres mo guarantee it will work under longhorn
  8. restarting in msdos mode is tricky,i only did it for the new user.exe and user32.dll even then i had problems(god thing i had another os or i would have had to format again)
  9. how did you do that?was it easy?
  10. an update would be lovely
  11. i hate longhorn period, for one thing it's too slow even on a fast pc,true it will prolly be better in 2007,it's doubful i'd buy a 6ghz pc just for that,i'll stick to my xp/98 combo even when ms brings longhorn out,the alphas suck big time,i bet longhorn will cost 1000 bucks,xp pro costs 500 bucks where i live and thats too expensive,if longhorn is anygood then maybe i'll change my decision but right now till longhorn is rtm i'm sticking to xp,2000,98 if i had a choice between longhorn and linux i'd choose linux i voted for No, don't like Longhorn! i more than don't like it i dispise it,too friggin slow and my stuff may not work for it,when it comes out it will be pirated like xp is and has..and i'm on a tight budget there now i'm done letting off some real hot steam... HeHe
  12. he does not want xp even though me has better plug n play with flash drives n stuff,if you apply the sp for 98 se it basicaly is 98 with me enhancements,me always slows down even if your lucky to have hardware that it likes 98=do alittle to get it stable me=do alot to get it stable sides some hardware doesen't say me but 98 on it 98 never slows me down,me is unpredictable,98 isn't,just put proper updated drivers in 98 n your sailing, out of say 10 pcs 1 pc liked me,all of them liked 98,that says it all
  13. erpdude8 is correct,i tried installing it under windows 98 n no go,office xp or office 2002 will install under windows 98 but not office 2003,only 2000+sp3 and above it will install
  14. i know xml 4.0 sp2 is crap the other one is great, nice n fast and it plain works
  15. i don't believe so you will need to dl that
  16. nlite is crap i tried it n some of my apps don't work right just input the cd and just do an upgrade
  17. but's it's strange that i've never installed mdac but i've only installed the security updates found on windows update
  18. alright then thats your choice of course just keep it patched and updated and thats all but you knew that.
  19. crap cleaner doesen't see it but i know advanceduninstaller will
  20. use another program mdac is a hidden uninstaller use either crap cleaner to remove it or use advanced uninstaller or a few other uninstallers and there ya go,i know it's hidden cuzz i've seen it
  21. anything wireless is a security risk even if it is encrypted i won't use wireless internet, corded is better and safer
  22. there are ways of removing ie like using ieiradicator windows 98 would benifit from having ie 6 and the newer ie system files as lotsa apps need ie 6 to work properly, instead of using ie 6 just get rid of the icons so you can't use it,i know some ppl don't want ie but some apps need ie,until we have lots more apps that don't need ie we should just keep it,i know you gain a bit of speed but you loose some compatabilty,it used to be ie 5.5 but no more,i keep ie around so all my apps work i simply don't use it,just get it fully patched and your ready to go. zoem if you don't want ie simply remove it,there are apps that can remove it. ssmokee i fully understand where your coming from, some ppl may not want ie but if a particular app needs ie and there are no alternatives they either go without that app or put ie in so that app works,it's all up to the user what they want and what they don't want,i know i don't want ie but i use apps that need ie and there are no alternatives availible
  23. what does it say?if you tell me what it says i can help
  24. well said ssmokee couldn't agree more i haven't done that yet but i will be implementing it i don't know when
  25. see people even though ms will stop sopporting 98 ppl like me and others will continue to use it,not as many apps work under 98 thats the only down side but thats small,i had 98 as my 4th os but since i got rid of 2000 it is now my 2nd os,my main os is xppro+sp1,my 3rd is xppro+sp2,i'm actualy under 98 at times more than xp,if 98 didn't have a resource problem it might have become my main os(at one time i was my main os for years, now xp is(not sp2 as some apps don't like it,xpsp1 everything works under it)the apps i run are resource intestive so i try to find ways of keeping 98 with as much resources as possible.
