  1. yea i feel the same way,i hate wireless mice n keyboards cuzz they need batteries and if not careful some1 could hack in and steel my mouse, corded stuff is much better and safer, sides i never use those multimedia keys,i do everything manualy, sides it costs less cuzz cuzz no need for batteries(i have a couple batteries here and there and i rarely use batteries)i know of some1 who has a wireless mouse and he always has problems with it,an older logitech wireless mouse,i use microsoft optical mice(the corded ones)always found them to work in every computer i own,i have a logitech mouse and it's picky with some systems
  2. my laptop is a compaq 1235(it's a 5 year old model i purchased 3 months ago cuzz i wanted a laptop even a crappy one)it has 98 on it with 160 ram on it(when i got it it had 3 ram left on it but now it has lotsa ram)i got rid of windows 2000 and sticking to xpsp1 and xpsp2 and win 98 one day i may put w2k+sp3 on it
  3. also ppl thats why it's beta,if you install the sp 1.6.2 then the beta then the 1.6.2 actualy becomes the 2.0beta uninstaller just rename it if you want to be specific
  4. for me i had a fully patched win 98 se on a GA-7N400E-L and i installed 98lite micro and on next system restart it said explorer.exe errors in explorer.exe and couldn't fix it or get into safe mode so i had to format.good thing i have other oses to save my stuff,i do like chubby even on a newer system,it has start menu editing(i edit the start menu everytime i use 98)it lacks view as webpage and preview of say a picture but i don't use that,if i wanna know what something is i go into it,active desktop is a resource hog, after it removes it i can't stretch my wallpaper but there are apps that can do the same thing without being a resource hog,so chubby is very good,i won't use sleek for the simple reason that it has no startmenu editing and some of the apps i use are resource hungry and may not work under sleek,i do have a win95b and maybe a win 95 installation disk that was given to me,overweight is the full win 98 deskop, alot of the shell enhancements i don't use as i'm used to doing it the hard way,if i was using xp as my first os i would want buttons to be here and there to be easy but coming from a windows 3.1 enviroment was very different than it is now so i don't like all those extra useless buttons as i know the keyboard shortcuts very well(i love the keyboard, best thing to come out)the mouse is also nice but keyboard is better at times,ah those wer the good ol days of computing, win me i would use if it was viable but on one system out of say 10 it was good, someone i work for used to use me,he didn't at first want to switch to 2000,xp but he did and he don't eregret it now, there now i'm done saying what i did, have a nice day.
  5. and to add to that, only download updates that you need or are affecting you, gape will include updates that affect everyone not just specific updates,it's alot easier to fix a problem if it affects everyone rather than specific systems, right now ms will only release critical updates and nothing else till june 2006,CLASYS should indeed use his brain erpdude8,erpdude8 is right,ms would get criticized heavily,i know windows 98 is getting old but it's viable,to some it is not a viable os,it still works on new hardware and software just not as much now than say when it was first released, windows 95 is too old and in indeed doesen't work for hardware thats new, when it was first created it was the greatest thing for windows and ms but now thats ancient, some software and i mean some and very little hardware still work for windows 95.
  6. 10 dolla keybords r good enuf,no need to buy a 100 dolla keybord for it's uselss fetures
  7. if it works for the english version it won't work for arabic version, well if i was you i would try it and see it it does work,if it does than you just learned something new
  8. i don't play ut not much of a gamer these days prathapml i was stating my option about the windows 98 interface too me it's good but to others nobody knows
  9. once you apply the sp it fixes the 512 mb limitation if not follow what oftentired said but add MinFileCache=524288 and add ChunkSize=512 to the [VCache] section of your System.Ini file it is not win.ini file cuzz there is no vcache in there, there is in system.ini if you try to add more than 512 ram, windows 98 will not start and give out of memory errors before windows starts, you must do this fix before you put more than 512 ram in i will be going to 1 gig of ram soon cuzz i need it badly
  10. either uninstall mdac 2.8 or format windows 98,strange as i got no problems and can create folders
  11. correct winfs won't make it ms is putting it off along with other stuff sides i tried the beta longhorns n they r crap=won't goto longhorn=i'd goto linux i use 98 and xp and 2000,for media players winamp is a good alternative to windows media player, mandrake linux 10 is pretty good just won't switch to linux yet cuzz wine don't work for me and i use windows games 24/7 and windows apps 24/7
  12. ay first windows 98 doesen't allow more than 512 ram,if you want to use more than 512 you must limit the ammount of memory that vcache sees or do though msconfig/advanced and limit memory to 999(thats the highest value it will allow)
  13. once he is done with the english versoion of the sp 2.0 he then can focus on other localized versions for other languages english is more popular than any other language personlay i prefer it as i can communicate with others easier
  14. erpdude8 sorry i didn't state more clearly what i said what i meant to say is even though 98 won't be supported after june 30th 2006 it will be used by many for many more years to come win9x will live look at what gape is doing for win 9x,he is helping to keep it alive, and mdgx, there are many that believe win9x is still a viable os just it needs rebooting afterawhile but thats a minor problem that we can live with,xp doesen't need rebooting as much but it has trouble with some dos games that win9x doesen't but who plays dos games now?i used to but no more
  15. gape needs to fix that the ability to uninstall the sp 2.0beta hopefuly in the next one it will be fixed
  16. thats a risk you take with installing the sp in the next sp it will give you the option of installing the win me icons or not so the risk will be lower
  17. erpdude8 my 2nd comp has a 40 gig with 2 partitions on it(the sound blaster 5.1 is in it,xppro+sp1,xppro+sp2) my main comp has a 120gb on it with 3 partitions(xppro+sp1,xppro+sp2,Windows 98 SE) my storage comp has a 60 gb on with 1 partition(xppro+sp1) my other comp has an older 1.96 gb with 1 partition on it(it is very old like 8 yrs old or is my 2nd comp i ever had,Windows 98 SE) my laptop has a 4 gb with 1 partition on it(Windows 98 SE) hope this answers your question bud hp38guser is that cmd.exe better than the windows one?what is the difference between that one and the windows one?is there a screnshot?
  18. glad to have you back in full swing gape, take all the time you need
  19. well if more women were to be techies i would be shocked, most women here are not techies, xps interface does get boring afterawhile but you can change it,the 98 interface doesen't get boring, simple and easy to use
  20. win me can be stable but you gotta do alot to make it that way,but win 98 is better, you don't need to do as much to get it stable,if you want dos mode keep 98 as it has it,with me it has it's access removed,i see no reason to use me,also more hardware will work with 98 over me so you will want to use 98 over me,with me your asking for trouble, stick to something like 98 not me
  21. thinker your missing the point unfortunately, the sp already has ie 5.5 updates, since it has those ie 5.5 updates it should have ie 6 updates or remove the ie 5.5 updates it just makes more sense the point is about the ie updates,if no ie updates were included(before there were none now there is)then there would never have been ie updates but gape decided to include the ie 5.5 updates, win 98 se doesen't come with ie 5.5,it comes with ie 5,windows 2000 comes with ie 5.5 so the updates would be useless unless 98 came with ie 5.5 but it doesen't sorry to say.
  22. at first it can only support up to 512 but the sp resolves that,if not there are other workarounds to allow up to 1.5 gig from what i know,it's a bit of work but it's worth it sides the original windows 98 is too buggy,se is not buggy
  23. it sounds to me he is forcing it on us or on me
  24. if you do it my way you will avoid problems like when i installed my sound drivers without newest dx it warned me about it and sound didn't sound very good after all. you install ie6 first after you install win 98 cuzz apps n drivers may need the newer ie files.you don't need av for 98,lots of ppl don't target 98 just 2000,xp,his drivers may complain about the newest directx, install yor apps after my suggestion and it work wonders,i know i've done it and it works everytime, and windowsupdate is last(u need to apply the fix for windowsupdate after you install the sp) and install the mp9 codecs instead of the mp8 codecs choose what way you decide but i advise to install ie 6 first then directx then drivers at least then do it any otherway you choose
