  1. I don't have a stereo system, the closest think I have to that is the two little speakers that came with my computer. I suppose I could plug my Cd player into my guitar amp. But the cable isn't gold plated however :-)
  2. Since starting this thread I've changed my mind and I don't use any compressed audio formats. I found it too confusing to remember which CD's I burned from MP3 source files and which CD's I didn't. Gradually, if I continued to transfer songs from CD to computer, and vice versa, there will be a loss of quality each time I rip them. It's like once you have MP3 stored on your hard drive, they're stuck there. There's no use in burning them onto CD because the quality will be inferior. So, in order to spare myself the confusion, I gave up on MP3 and WMA and whatever. Further, I don't really like listening to music on the computer, it detracts from the experience. Music is something I like to enjoy while sitting in bed, or staring out my window and watching the sunrise, sunset, or trees swaying in the wind. Listening on the computer degrades my music listening. Therefore, I have no need for any MP3 clutter. Nowadays, I listen to CD's only on my battery operated player. I'm very low-tech in that regard. I get 100% enjoyment from my little portable CD player walkman. It's nice because I can take it with me anywhere. I have gotten rid of most of my MP3's and only store WAV files on my computer.
  3. I'm glad I'm still on ME :-) As long as I can read the Drudge Report, check my Gmail (using plain html version) and read message boards/forums, and laugh at one-star reviews on Amazon, It's all fine and dandy. My nephew plays Commander Keen and Secret Agent (another Apogee classic) on this computer, so it's not an entire waste of electricity.
  4. To play MP4 videos in Windows ME with only 384 MB RAM, I use QuickView Pro 2.60 for DOS, or else VLC 0.8.6.f http://www.multimediaware.com www.oldapps.com
  5. No. I haven't noticed that they are slower... just stupider. If they made them less stupid, they might appear faster. I mean, a JPEG is gonna load faster on a newer version of Windows, simply because the OS requires more processing power and RAM. The unfortunate thing is that the newer versions of Windows lack the grace, elegance, and simplicity (and therefore speed) of the Windows ME and Windows 2000 interfaces. XP was the beginning of the stupidness. Just my two cents. Naysayers can waste their time calling me a blankety blank. Will not listen because I don't care.
  6. How big are the individual volumes? 1.4 Megabytes? If the volumes are bigger than can fit on a floppy disk, then using Pkunzip and Pkzipfix (as indicated in your other thread) probably won't help very much.
  7. I found some floppy disks in my closet and made a multi-volume archive using Pkzip to see what the finished files would be called. I produced a zip file called "jumble.zip" on my A drive using the following command "pkzip -a -ex -& a:\jumble.zip test\*.*" I then looked at both the first and second disks, and both files on each disk were called "jumble.zip" When Pkzip creates a multi-volume archive, it differentiates between the files/volumes by giving each floppy a different volume Label. The first disk is labeled "PKBACK #001" and the second disk is labled "PKBACK #002" and so on. Therefore, in your case, without any floppy disks that have a proper volume label indicating the order, it would pretty much be impossible to tell which volume is which when using Pkunzip to decompress them.
  8. PKzipfix won't "unpack" or repair a multi-volume (floppy) archive. You need to try using Pkunzip first to either test the integrity, or unpack it. You can try testing the integrity of the zipfile with the -t switch. For example: Pkunzip -t zipfile.zip Moreover, if you are close to a thrift store you could buy used floppy disks, then copy the files onto floppies. That's the way Pkzip was intended to be used. I really doubt you'll have much luck doing anything with multi-volume archives unless you're actually using floppy disks with Pkzip/Pkunzip. You will probably have to use a floppy drive, and place each volume onto a floppy. Then use Pkunzip to unpack the archive. Pkunzip -d a:\zipfile.zip You can download the last PKunzip for DOS (v2.50, with long filename support) here: http://ftp.lip6.fr/pub/pc/garbo/pc/arcers/ the file is called pk250dos.exe ....... If you check my thread, "The Updated Win98 Mini List of Software" I list several archivers that have multi volume support. "CCY HahaZip" is one of them. Although I've never used it myself, the feature is available, along with fixing damaged zipfiles. (It's been a long time since I've bothered with multi-volume archives, and when I did, I always used ARJ).
  9. Okay, I'll change that, thanks.
  10. Added. Thanks, CharlesF.
  11. Bumping this topic because I'm rebuilding/fixing it. Will add lots more in upcoming days/weeks. Going to list as much Win9x software as possible, before it all disappears for good or becomes too hard to find.
  12. Probably sunlight reflecting off ices of some kind. On the surface is the old ice, once there's a fresh impact crater it exposes the "clean" ices underneath, I'm guessing. Soon we should be getting first glances of Pluto up close.

  19. another thing to try is F-prot for DOS... no "windows needs upgrading" bullkrap here. It was last updated in 2008 but it still covers a wide range of DOS/Windows 98 era viruses. Nothing to lose in trying it out. (One time it repaired my boot sector that got infected and I couldn't even load anything... obviously since the MBR was toast) Run using the switch "F-prot /old" download this file.... ftp://ftp.sac.sk/pub/sac/avir/fp-316f.zip then download this one to the same directory, and when it askes you to overwrite files click yes. ftp://ftp.sac.sk/pub/sac/avir/fp-def.zip P.S. Windows is balls... also trying googling "Rhbvs" rose heuristic based virus scanner. good day.
  20. Whatever floats her boat :-)
  21. Not aware of any fix. But then I never use windows to search for files... I always open a DOS Command Prompt. type in: Dir *.* /ah /s /p will display every hidden file, in every subdirectory, with a pause between screens or use the Attrib command, by typing in: Attrib | more which will display all files, hidden or not, plus their attributes, and pause between screen fulls.
  22. This is exactly the point I was referring to with the Wooly Mammthos farts!!!If there were no people around back then, what caused all the cycles of ice ages and warming/cooling periods? I got it!!! The answer is.... The Atlanteans from Atlantis !! Sicne Atlantis had nuclear energy (according to the Psychics), then it must have been then Atlanteans who caused the VERY FIRST warming period. And ever since then, thanks to the Atlanteans, we've been stuck in the revolving cycle of warm, cold, warm, cold, warm, cold. Because before the denizens of Atlantis created nuclear war, the Earth existed in perfect equilibrium for eons. Nature was in perfect static harmony. There were no tornadoes, or floods, or hurricanes, or land slides, or rising tides, or earthquakes, or volcanoes, but pure, absolute bliss and tranquility!!!! It's the only conceivable explanation. But really, seriously, if the news media, and the fear mongers WERE ACTUALLY concerned about the health and welfare of every human and animal on this planet, I should just say ALL LIFE, then they'd be more concerned with stuff like nuclear waste disposal, and that giant floating plastic mass of garbage in the pacific ocean which is the size of Texas... But no.... we can't do ANYTHING, NOTHING, EVER, FOR ALL OF ETERNITY about fixing the oceans or stopping nuclear waste, or building betters cars that don't pollute.... BUT, we can do something about population control, we can instill FEAR into every generation born on this planet, and tell them your all GUILTY FOR BREATHING!!!!!!
  23. what Antivirus program are you using?
  24. Maybe the woolie mammoths migrated south to warmer weather and became the bald, less hairy elephants we know today
  25. This article seems to refute the latest headlines saying 2014 was the "hottest year ever!" http://www.wnd.com/2015/01/scientists-undermine-hottest-year-claim-by-feds/ Here's some questions I'd like to ask Al Gore and the rest of those pseudoscientists: Since Canada was once covered by gigantic 2 mile deep ice sheet, who caused that ice to melt? Did caveman cause global warming? Did too many WOOLY MAMMOTH farts reverse the ice age? Please, inquiring minds would like to know... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laurentide_ice_sheet Global Warming hype seems to be a combination of hucksterism, narcisism (the fact that they believe humans are the center of creation and we affect EVERYTHING, and everything that happens is because of our existence... give me a break, get over yourselves), paranoia, and some evil plot to use fear in order to pass laws, or in Al Gore's case get rich quick. Feel free to add to my list :-)
