  3. If you download the "Belarc Advisor" it may help you to know which drivers you will need for your hardware devices. http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html The "NSSI" program will also give you some details on your computer. http://www.navsoft.cz/products.htm They're both pretty straight forward and easy to read.
  4. And yet another site: ERPMan's Windows 9x and ME Services Packs, Patches/Addons Updates Page http://erpman1.tripod.com/w9xmeupd.html Windows ME Installation tutorial, with some (useful) undocumented command-line arguments: http://winsupersite.com/article/windows-95/install-me-successfully-install-or-upgrade-windows-me-128028 Windows ME Unofficial Service Pack Thread http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/61407-service-pack-for-windows-me/ Potential download sites (subject to change at any time... or, they used to work): 1. http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#WME 2. http://www.mdgx.com/ 3. http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/patching/winme/ 4. http://ftp.sunet.se/pub/security/vendor/microsoft/winME/Security_Bulletins/ 5. http://www.mmnt.net/ 6. https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.mdgx.com/ 7. And of course, you can Google the individual filenames 8. Or you can try Googling the following: Finally, this entire list is now linked at the top (first post) of my "Updated Mini List" for future reference. Also, bear in mind that the contents of the above lists overlap with each other. (WinUpdatesList version 1.32) Can't vouch for accuracy, but this program apparently lists the installed updates (if any) to your Windows ME system: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wul.html
  5. lovely song from end of X-Files 2 P.S. that is a great Bjork live song of All is Full of Love
  6. http://www.zdnet.com/cybersecuritys-hiring-crisis-a-troubling-trajectory-7000032923/ Here's the main point of that long article: and this gem As opposed to what? Something actually improving? Now that would be news, something improving! Stop the press!
  7. I got my score up to 21 bits by also disabling cookies. My uniqueness went to 2.5 million or so. Here's a Tech Republic article about the Panopticlick test: http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/it-security/panopticlick-your-web-browsing-is-less-anonymous-than-you-think/ ^ A brief explanation, without needing to download the PDF from panopticlick website.
  8. Thanks, Dencorso, for the link. Okay here are the current results: Bear in mind, I'm using Windows ME (not a virtual computer, or dual partition setup, but an actual 14 year old computer) using K-Melon no javascript.I wonder how that stacks up against the latest greatest computer security. Is it bad because it's unique and I have a bullseye on my back, or is it good because it's too old to be susceptible to modern spying devices? Either way, it's not going to dissuade me from using this system. As I prefer it for many other reasons besides security. Anyway, thanks for link. Maybe some other folks will post their data too :-)
  9. duckduckgo and startpage both work without javascript too, which is a plus. I tried "private.me" but it didn't work without it. :bummer.
  10. Hmm... no mention of using alternative search engines like DuckDuckGo, Startpage.com, or Private.me Because I'm a dial-up user, I have a dynamic (changing) IP address every time I log on. How does that fit into the grand scheme of things. I'm glad this article mentions the lack of true privacy "cleaning programs" provide. It's more like they offer an illusion of privacy. They basically remove your history of recent documents from view, that's all. You know, it's like so your mom can't find out you're looking at nudie pictures. That's all. Meanwhile, your browsing habits are in the open for websites to save. I wonder if always having javascript disabled slows down potential snoopers? What about using outdated hardware or lesser used operating system, not to mention completely avoiding Google, Facebook, Yahoo, etc? The part about John McAfee only makes me appreciate my old 3 Megapixel cameras even more, since they have no "Geo Location" on them. My car is 40 years old too... no button for the police to switch it off or track it. Older is better ;-)

  12. I'm going to have to say, Rocky 5!!!!! The fight at the end is the best of them all. "He's a street fighter!" Rocky should have busted out his street fightin' moves on that Soviet Dude in Rocky 4. Rocky could've kicked everybody's butt if he used his street fighting skills. But no, can't fight dirty! Bring on the dirty fightin'!
  13. The white lotus car was from The Spy Who Loved Me. I will have to re-watch You Only Live Twice... since my memory of that one is foggy, beyond the volcano at the end of course.

  15. I share your sentiments about the last couple of Bonds. I would rank Dr No or Goldfinger #8 on my list.
  16. 1. The Spy Who Loved Me 2. Moonraker 3. For Your Eyes Only 4. The Man With the Golden Gun 5. Octopussy 6. A View to a Kill 7. Live and Let Die notice a pattern here?

  18. agree with you there submix8c.... I'm wondering if OP has tried the "Control-Alt-G", "F" method yet?
  19. From the bottom of Submix8c's Link.... this looks promising... and http://windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread.php/14794-Adaptec-GoBack-software-on-Win-98
  20. I'll add my two cents... checking for malware might be a good idea as well. I don't know your situation.... but perhaps you can get to a library and download the following programs. (Take a blank CD-R or USB flash drive with you to library). If you aren't able to do this, then perhaps you could suggest them to your Doctor friend and he can use them. I will provide links to a few programs, and if you need help running or loading them, I'm sure we can help. It's just another avenue to persue... since you never mentioned what kind of security/anti-virus software you have. Without much detailed information about your PC we don't have much to go on at the moment, therefore it's like stabbing in the dark. But, I'm sure it's fixable one way or the other. BugHunter Malware Scanner for DOS http://bughunter.it-mate.co.uk/ F-Prot Anti-Virus for DOS ftp://ftp.sac.sk/pub/sac/avir/fp-316f.zip ftp://ftp.sac.sk/pub/sac/avir/fp-def.zip ^ Make a folder called "Fprot" and extract the contents of both zip files into that folder. It will ask you to overwrite the older definitions, simply click yes. Once both zip files are extracted to the folder, go to Start, then Run, then type in "command." A black screen should appear. Then type in "F-prot /old." The program will start, tell it to search all local disks. To get back to windows type "Exit." F-prot can sometimes repair a "broken" or infected Master Boot record. MemScan http://roseswe.ez-web.de/ *Edit* Lastly, make sure your hard drive isn't out of space. Those back up programs might use up a lot of drive space if left unchecked. Silly suggestion about drive space, but yeah.
