  2. SSD (SATA3 for now; the next round of headaches will be trying to boot W7 from an M.2 NVMe one ). I can live with the extra 13 secs of boot time, but it is annoying. All my other PCs boot up lightning quick and I'm spoiled . I suspect the "special" beta USB 3.0 drivers for W7 on X570 are connected to the problem, because before them the time from "meatballs together" to desktop was just ~2 seconds. But right after installing these drivers the problem appeared and that time grew to ~16 secs:
  3. Long story short, I've managed to install & run W7 x64 on an X570 board. No small feat. Basically followed this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6_MdxMUpRE The heretical concoction runs amazingly well, save for a little too long boot time (about 16 seconds from the Windows 7 "meatballs" getting together to desktop, should be 1 to 3 seconds tops). Investigating with the Event Viewer I've found this: But I haven't the foggiest idea on how to deal with this gremlin . Though I suspect the beta USB 3.0 drivers for Windows 7 on X570 might be related to the problem ... Any help or ideas would be much appreciated!
  4. The "metallic sticker" is a soft metal thermal interface. Some Intel CPU heatsinks from around the turn of the century were "blessed" with this extremely inefficient "thermal solution": Itanium disassembly That crap needs to be completely removed and replaced with decent thermal paste, specially so when dealing with P4 Burnwood/Preshott furnaces.
  5. ^ From the pic I assume you're talking about a side panel duct to feed cold air to CPU fan. A side panel duct is a cool (pun intended) idea for a P4, but unless it is well aligned with the CPU fan it might be doing more harm than good. If it is way misaligned I'd remove the duct and just leave the hole in the side panel. ^ I'd remove that crap from the bottom of the CPU heatsink and replace it with just any decent thermal paste. Buena suerte.
  6. Allow me to resurrect this thread with proof of concept: I followed the Gigabyte Tool method and installed the OS swiftly and smoothly from a USB 3.0 flash drive. Windows 7 goes like a charm on this CPU and ASUS Prime X470-Pro mobo.   15. Sorry, I forgot that they had ruined Magician, I'm on 4.95. Wouldn't touch 5.x (useless spyware, the sign of the times ). Even 4.x needs some kicking in the rear to behave: it loves phoning home, setting itself to autostart with Windows, and you can only truly close the bugger from the notification area. If it helps for peace of mind, I still keep some ~2010 vintage SSDs and they still run like champs (one of them in a retrocomp with 98/XP, so no TRIM). I would only worry about data retention if SSD was to remain unpowered for several months in a row (voltage drift and bit rot, specially if planar TLC NAND).

Whenever the internal SSD controller decides that the drive is being taxed lightly or not at all, it will do garbage collection. Modern SSDs are good at it, I would't lose sleep on that. But if we wish on the 850 EVO we can force TRIM commands at will with Magician > Perf Optimization.
  17. I went a step beyond and have been installing the whole browser (Pale Moon portable) on ramdisk for years. Lightning quick browser experience. If it isn't already, don't forget to enable AHCI before installing or cloning system to SSD.

  19. Windows 7 automatically aligns SSD correctly, no worries there. I'd go for the 850 EVO 250GB, works like a charm and its 3D TLC is more reliable than the usual planar TLC crap. You can partition the SSD as you like, no worries. All SSDs come with built-in OP (Over Provisioning) space to ease wear levelling, in the case of the 250GB 850 EVO OP is 9.1% of the 256GB raw NAND capacity (i.e. ~23GB, that's why formatted capacity is only 233GB). If you're paranoid about longevity, for peace of mind you can leave some space unpartitioned, and it will be automatically used as extra OP space by the SSD internal controller. Not really needed nowadays, unless you task the SSD extremely heavily writing dozens of GBs every day. You'll love how fast the system runs from an SSD and will never look back.
