  1. Well January 2020 is just over a year and a half away. That's a blink of an eye when you're going on with life. So I would plan. @wykchari: If you can source a license for Windows 8 (as in the original - I refuse to call it 8.0 because no such thing exists), that could work for you. I was running Windows 8 on a NetBurst based Xeon CPU (basically a hyperthreaded P4), so that should work for you. Then just mosey over to our thread called "Server 2012 Updates on Windows 8". I'd link it for you, but right now, several people are getting a "403 Forbidden" error when they try that. Any way, follow that advice - and now you're good until October 2023. What is it that you personally know about this? I'm just curious to be honest.
  2. Sorry @Tripredacus: I just tried posting in a thread, and I get the 403 Forbidden Fruit Error - and yes I pressed Ctrl F5 first. I think this appears too universal to be a browser issue. (Edit: if you link a site, that's when you get the error)
  3. I responded to you in another thread. This really concerns me. I was ecstatic when I realized I could update Vista and Windows 8 in to the future. But I also wonder how much slow down was accumulated even up to December 2017? Well perhaps I should only update to 2017 on my new Windows 8 installation come September-ish.
  4. Well, something in one of the updates did overwrite my patched uxTheme files, so I fetched those from a backup, just so my themes worked. I guess my .NET was all patched up, since the update did not apply. Otherwise, all is well in Vista-Land!
  5. Well I've reviewed the updates as best I can and have gone through with the installation. I dunno, somehow I feel as if Microsoft isn't leveling with us on everything, you know? Oh well (I'll let you all know how it goes.)
  6. Why would I want to still run Firefox 45 ESR at this point? What is the perceived benefit? :)
  7. See that sort of news worries me. I've gone back to Vista for a bit on this old system I'm on. In the last couple of months, I've noticed slower browsing, but that could the mobility-first developed sites overwhelming my older system on New Moon (Roytam1's Pale Moon build). I really hope that Server 2012 updates for the next five years could provide some benefit to Windows 8 (not 8.1). I'll have to plug my nose I guess. I'm waiting to do my new install on my newish PC, until I get all of these particulars figured out.
  8. I posted this info over at the Vista DM Forum. @townsbg was on this forum as well. Maybe he can better explain the complete lack of interest on this topic (post-EOL updates) on that forum which should be ALL ABOUT Vista. Even he spreads the pessimism.
  9. Why thank you John - and now !!!! Life may have just become a tad easier for Vista users: https://www.ghacks.net/2018/06/17/windows-server-2008-r2-switched-to-rollup-model/ Server 2008 Updates have also switch to the unified/rollup model
  10. Actually those using Firefox ESR 52 would probably benefit more from Roytam's Basilisk build. Same Australis interface and plugins, Just sayin' :)
  11. I'm on Ghacks pretty regularly. I'll go check the June entries. :)
  12. I went to this page but I was unable to obtain all of the update explanations like the January example above. https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/20180612/security-update-deployment-details I know greenhillmaniac posted the right links before, but has something changed?
  13. I've downloaded but not installed the following updates: KB4284846, KB4230450 (IE10), KB4287903 (Flash), KB4095518 (.NET 4.5) (all part of the 4099638 .NET Package) When I move back to Windows 8, I'll have lots of updates in front of me. What I was doing was: Installing all of the automatic updates until January 2016 Then starting at the most recent updates, and installing backwards. I find that I can skip a bunch of superseded updates that way. Is this a good move? Repeat the process for IE10, Flash, and .NET Feedback desired :)
  14. Well I've downloaded (but yet to install) this month's Vista updates from the catalog: KB4230467, KB4234459, KB4130956, KB4093227, KB4294413 KB4095513 (.NET v2 and v3) KB4230450 (IE9) Of course no longer wanting to be a guinea pig, I'll wait a few days until I hear more. Being a pioneer can be fun and all, but I'm beginning to prefer paved roads that I see traffic has already used. :p
  15. Yeah I think I am starting to hear about more people using Windows 10 now (anecdotally in my own circles). I find that's the best real-world indicator.
  16. Glad to have MSFN back up a second time. One of these days I will have to donate, even though I know this wasn't the case of the down time (this time around.)
  17. @greenhillmaniac: Well I'm glad MSFN is back up, because I would have hated to lose track of you. Moreover, the last link you've provided for the logon picture works with Windows 8 correct? That seems nifty. :)
  18. JodyT to "Jody Thornton" (without quotes). My old username was brought back with the system restore. :)
  19. I can't believe it actually happened. https://www.tenforums.com/windows-10-news/103684-market-share-february-2018-a.html
  20. Just download security only updates from the catalog. Here was the original list of stuff to avoid form the Windows Update list KB3068708 KB3035583 KB2976978 KB3044374 KB3050267 There's more though
  21. Well first off, the you've obviously burned the DVD-ROM from an downloaded ISO. So is it legal? Next thing, Windows Update will just work by searching for updates, so if you just want to download security-only patches after October 2016, I would use either WSUS or the Microsoft Update Catalog. Then you can run Windows Update again afterwards and install the other .NET and IE 11 updates.
  22. Why Thank You @BeauH
  23. I like your thinking greenhillmaniac. And thanks for your feedback dencorso. I'll remain calm
  24. Yikes! Should I be worried about this, or treat it like FUD (which is a mindset I usually don't like to subscribe to) Still awaiting a bios update, but it appears HP is taking its sweet time. since it's an old machine, that may not come to pass.
