  1. For Windows 8, I'll use Windows Defender, alongside on-demand scans with Malwarebytes (I still use v1.75 with current definitions). For Windows Vista, 7 or XP, I'd install Comodo Anti-Virus. It seems complete, and REALLY quick.
  2. Could that redefine the term "assault and battery" ?
  3. I didn't realize how old this thread was. Is this the best place to post for Windows Phone? I want to avoid iOS and Android like the plague.
  4. I was considering getting a second-hand Windows Phone 7 or 8.1 and using IE 11. Would the built in IE 11 be OK for browsing forums and the like? I would hardly use Facebook. I'd probably browse forums, play YouTube or Podcasts (not subscribed but just MP3s directly downloaded), and get email.
  5. I'm on Windows 8 (which allows me to use patches from Server 2012) I've fresh installed on to a "new to me" PC workstation. I've only updated to November 2017, except for IE 10 - I've installed the latest browser and Flash updates for it (Flash is built in to Windows 8). I've gone no further. Now my performance seems top-notch, but I worry that not updating in the long run will cause security holes in the OS. Soon, I'll be a year out of date. It seems "irresponsible" almost. But @NoelChas gone through exhaustive testing and it shows installing the updates up until current (and disabling Spectre/Meltdown mitigations) still results in an 8% decrease in certain performance parameters. Now was that because those mitigations were still installed (although disabled?) Who's to say. So what I hope to find is ABSOLUTE VALIDATION that installing all security updates to current but skipping March 2018's update is a worthwhile idea. @NoelC's theory is that not installing consecutive updates all the way through might destabilize the OS in some way, because newer updates require dependencies or prerequisites from older updates. Somehow I need to get proof that's NOT the case.
  6. Well I'm all by myself over at the Windows 8 Update thread. I've downloaded the updates, but I only installed IE10, and it will stay that way for awhile, until I'm confident no other updates since December 2018 will hamper performance.
  7. Plus, every Windows-based OS needs some tinkering out of the box, and more so with each version. But Windows 10 seems to reset stuff with every update and build. I hope I can figure out a way to safely update Windows 8 (without performance clogging CPU-impairing updates that seem to be the norm now), because I want to stay with it at least for five years.
  8. For Rocktober! I've installed the IE10 update (KB4462949). I also downloaded the Security-Only Update (KB4462931) and the .NET v4.5.2 update (KB4457018), but I'm not installing them. I have my installation of Windows 8 set to a November 2017 timeline. I was concerned about the integrity of the December 2017 update because of rebooting issues, so I held off for now. (perhaps that's fixed now.) Time to reboot.
  9. I'm just staying with .NET v4.5 until I need a application that requires anything higher.
  10. For Vista: New Moon and then Basilisk
  11. Checked this. I disable secure boot, so this won't affect me. :)
  12. Just what are the consequences of not installing the SSU?
  13. I never installed it. I even labelled it with Spectre. Nonetheless, I just finished backing up and unplugging my Vista box, so tomorrow - a new-ish PC with Windows 8
  14. I'd actually like to know that too. I'm starting a fresh Windows 8 installation tomorrow afternoon. :)
  15. Yet a lot of people on other boards (like Vista Forums and the Pale Moon Forum) seem weary of them. @roytam1 should clear the air with these guys, so that they'll embrace these options.
  16. Well @roytam1tomorrow I pull the plug on Vista, so I wish you guys all the luck in the world with updated ports of New Moon and Serpent. You've done some good work. But I will be making the Quantum leap as of Sunday. Cheers! :)
  17. Some are still appearing though. I tried Status4Evar, and it appears https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/status-4-evar/?src=ss FoxE9 still appears too https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/foxe9/?src=search
  18. Except there will now be paid support offered for Windows 7 Enterprise customers until January 2023. So I wonder if you could use those updates on Windows 7 Professional?
  19. This is a text file I saved back in February 2016 called "Updates I Skipped on Windows 8.txt" KB3163589 Out of Date Notification KB2976978 Compatibility Update for Windows 8.0 and 8.1 Update KB2975331 August 2014 Update Rollup - Microsoft recommended uninstalling because of boot issues - no benefits to desktop use anyway KB3058168 May need to be removed - allows upgrade to Windows 10 KB3008273 Allows automatic upgrade to Windows 8.1 KB2822241 Forces automatic restarts after performing Windows Update KB3105216 Older build of Adobe Flash Player KB2901982 .NET Framework v4.5.2 But I appreciate your looking out for me :)
  20. Well on the PC I'm running now (my HP xw8200), I was going to install Windows 8.1 Pro x64 (this was back three years ago), but there was a CPU incompatibility with my Netburst Xeons. It's discussed in another thread. So I sourced Windows 8 x64 Pro, and it worked. So I stayed with it, and then I found out about all of the GWX stunts, added telemetry and CPU blocking that Microsoft started pulling with Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, and said to myself, "Hmmmmmm, now that I have 2012 updates working on it, I'll stay with Windows 8, since the OS isn't affected by all of that nonesense" Besides, other than the improvement in metro apps or booting to the desktop (which Classic Shell does anyway), there was very little that changed in the "Explorer" (desktop) portion of the OS. So I decided to stick with it, and vowed that my next machine would use it too. Until I changed machines, I decided to go back to Vista back in March just to try out the updates from 2008. I just wanted to briefly flirt with it, but I'm ready to set up a machine that I can now use happily for the next five years.
  21. I guess my question is, does DRM work in New Moon and MyPal? I would think that if it doesn't work in Pale Moon, then it wouldn't work in New Moon either. Is this correct @roytam1?
  22. Well had I been staying with Vista, I would have only installed updates for .NET v2 and v3, and for IE9. Even when I go to Windows 8, I'm only updating up to December 2017 for now. The updates have not been all that stable. :(
  23. Sure thing. I'll be over at the other thread I started "Server 2012 Updates on Windows 8" :)
  24. Well I have downloaded (but not installed) the latest Windows 8 Updates (ahem! Server 2012 patches) KB4457140 KB4457426 (IE10) KB4457146 (Flash) KB4457029 (.NET 4.5.2) Next week, I switch back to Windows 8, but I'll only be installing the IE 10 update from this list.
