  1. What is your screen resolution? I use 1024x768 and found I need to reduce the zoom just a bit in order for it to fit correctly. But I've noticed this as well.

    Worthless OSes

This thread is worthless and has no point to it. Topic LOCKED
  3. Well, I think for me, it's because Windows 2000 looks like Windows 98 in disguise. I know there are things out there to help make Windows XP look like Windows 98/2000, but to me it's still not enough. The explorer shell for one thing, in anything I've ever come across, is never transformed. Even though it's somewhat useful, I'd rather get rid of the My Places bar, or whatever it is called, I can't remember offhand right now, and replace it with the sidebar from Windows 98/2000. I just have so many fond memories of 98 because it was the first major OS I used and it was from a good time when things were just better and more exciting. But I think one last thing is that because of the work from people like blackwingcat and his unofficial updates, it feels like in some aspects, Windows 2000 is more superior to Windows XP. That may or may not be true but for some reason it just gives me that impression. I actually own a legit copy (maybe, maybe not lol) of WIndows XP that is the volume license copy so it doesn't require activation. I was given it by my computer teacher a long time ago. I'm thinking it was probably the volume license copy from the school district but all those EULAs get so complicated anymore, who knows if it's even valid for them anymore.
  4. I don't think that will happen. If it does, it would probably exist under the Windows 9x section as a subforum. Since very few people use DOS for anything outside of minor command necessities, it would add more clutter to an already full board. Although @xper is the one who would make the final call on this one, I'm just an Smod.
  5. @ruthan Can you please try and edit your posts instead of double and triple posting in a row? Unless a day or so has passed without new replies, it would be appreciated if you would just edit your original post. Otherwise, if it's been a day or two without any new replies, then go ahead and make another post with new information. Thanks!
  6. Welcome! It's great to have another die-hard Windows 2000 user here. I use it as my daily OS as well.
  7. As much as I agree with the sentiments, let's try and keep the language a bit cleaner. Thanks!
  8. The only bad thing is how heavy CRT monitors are, but I don't think I'd mind LCD panels so much if you could buy both regular or widescreen models. I found a nice Dell LCD panel at Goodwill and it's actually my main panel because it's a nice square and it also has a USB hub on it which makes it even more convenient to plug stuff into!
  9. Yes, let's please keep this on topic about Aeroglass. If you have any other issues, please post it in the Windows 10 forum and I'm sure it'll get more attention from other Windows 10 users. So let's not derail this thread anymore, okay? @BJFox
  10. So here's a question, xper. What is the difference between donations and sponsorship? Do they work in the same ways? If you donate, are you automatically a sponsor?
  11. I think this has been solved, xper can chime in if he wants to but I don't think he's going to change this. Topic LOCKED
  12. You also have to keep in mind how huge this site is. The database itself is in the gigabytes so it's huge in itself and as Tarun said, it depends on the plan. MSFN isn't cheap to run and even though like you said, it's 2017, it still costs to run this place and without donations, it makes it hard for xper to keep it up and going. Whatever doesn't come from donations or ad-revenue, comes out of his pocket. So even though it is an inconvenience, it's preferred that you use external hosting for images or file sharing. There are over 100,000 registered users on this site and if they were all active and took the 2MBs of space, that would equal over 200 gigabytes worth of extra hosting space aside from the site itself. It's just not practical. So imagine if we even bumped it up to 10MBs per user and many users took advantage of that, we'd never be able to afford it. And that's just hosting, I'm not even talking about bandwidth usage here...people loading up images on our own hosting would take even more bandwidth to load everything which puts stress on the server and some providers limit how much bandwidth you're allowed. I remember the days of Bulbagarden, long, long ago while I was still somewhat interested in Pokémon, and before they moved to a different hosting provider.....the up-time was TERRIBLE and most of the time you were greeted with an error message stating that the board was not accessible at this time because of "too much activity". So unfortunately, even in 2017, it has to be this way. I'd rather our site have 98-99.999% up-time rather than saving an extra step of having to use external hosting providers and throttle our site down to where you may or may not be greeted with a DoS screen.
  13. The web is anything but innovative. Once one site comes up with an idea, the rest follow like sheep and copy it. How is it innovative when all sites look and feel the same?

One thing that's just a bit of an annoyance to me and it has to do with Invision Power Board. Just because YouTube/Google went to a letter based avatar system in absence of your own custom avatar, it will just use the first letter of your username. Please tell me WHY IPB had to copy that idea??

@jaclaz, I couldn't view that website at work but I took a look at it just now and that's exactly what I'm talking about! Sure, it's not "pretty" and "fancy", but it definitely gets the point across, right?? And I bet even a 28.8kbps connection could load that up pretty fast.

With big companies quickly adapting and making changes.. how bad of a situation are we looking at when a new startup with a new idea for a socializing platform or anything else really for the web is to have their original idea be copied with the less effort and more heavily funded larger companies? Are we in a state of "there's no point to this anymore"? I haven't been watching this scene of developments on the web but from what I hear from people it's a kind of reality we now live in- to an extent perhaps...

  14. @blackwingcat Can you figure out what is stopping this application from running? https://www.fitbit.com/setup?platform=winxp It installs just fine with no errors, but running it is a different story. It says the instruction at "0x5ab7d465" reference memory at "0x01cdfffc" The memory could not be read. I bought some Fitbits today that I would like to sync up to my computer and I really hate the thought of having to pull out my laptop just to make this happen. I'm running your latest kernel extension as well.
  15. One of my personal favorites!
  16. Even if Abandonware wasn't a myth, Windows XP is still very much alive in many aspects. Sure, MS may have discontinued most of its support save by a few exceptions such as custom support (are they even doing this anymore?) or by branches such as Windows Embedded 2009. Abandonware would mean just that, it's abandoned. Windows XP is certainly very far from being abandoned and I'm sure there will still be plenty of usage of it at least until 2020.

Welcome! We're glad you decided to join us.
  18. The love everyone has shown MSFN in the past week is outstanding and nothing short of remarkable! Thank you to everyone who continues to donate to keep us alive and online. It's very much appreciated by not only me, but by everyone who has a love for this place and all the members in it. A big thank you to you all!

  19. xper may have fixed this because there was no X before to my knowledge.
  20. Not a big deal but it was actually on my work computer and I just happened to notice it. It was just very weird.
  21. IE11 on Windows 7....I'm pretty sure this is not suppose to be a thing. Chrome on the other hand, works just fine on the same machine. This only appears to be an issue in thread view, the home page looks just fine.
  22. A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came together to donate to MSFN and help keep us online. It's very much appreciated!

      You're welcome! :D

Let's keep the donations coming even if the site has met its previous goal!

  23. I'm going to finally verify that I have this working under Windows 2000. I think I've spent the last few hours trying to get this stupid thing to work. And even though I followed what blackwingcat had on his website, I still couldn't get it to work. So what I ended up doing was manually going into environment variables under your Windows system properties (right click My Computer and click properties, or just use the System control panel icon to get to it) And then I created a new variable name and then putting a 1 for the value (I did it under user variables. I suppose system variables would work too but I haven't tried it). And low and behold, it finally finally works! I'm running Firefox version 50, so I can confirm it's working. I can finally watch video on outlets like the weather channel as well. It's unreal. To make things easy for others, like dencorso says that the settings in about:config are case sensitive...if you have to create new booleans or strings, just copy what you see on the first post. That way you don't have to mess things up trying to type it all out. It actually helps to have MSFN open in a different browser while you're doing this so you can just copy and paste between browsers since putting a new window up to create a new whatever, it locks you out until you close that window again so being able to switch back and forth without having to have the extra clicks would probably be a good thing.
  24. Exactly. A forum of this magnitude would be at a big risk to run older forum software in regards to people trying to find exploits and gain access to places they shouldn't be, and also methods of controlling spam users isn't as good either, especially when they register. As much as I like older forum software because of its simplicity and light overhead, I definitely agree with xper on this one. Although it would be nice if there was something that could allow the forum to work more in a compatibility or lite mode for our older users who chose that option, but that's more on IPB's side and not on xper. I'm sure if something like that were to exist, he'd implement it for our legacy software users. Then again the more you add, even from the first party company, the more you can open yourself up to security risks which puts you back at square one again. So it's really a no win situation either way.
  25. I don't think that's an unreasonable request at all, especially if it draws the line of whether the forum stays or goes.
