  1. You shouldn't "believe" it is, you should make sure if there's even a possibility of a doubt. Run your hard drive manufacturer's diagnostics on the drives to be sure, then you can say "I KNOW my hard drive is fine.". That's not entirely true. A dying hard drive CAN cause corrupting of a partition, boot sector, windows system files, etc... In fact, quoted from the very page you link to: Which can occur as a result of a defective or dying hard drive.
  2. @crahak: That's a hell of a nice system they put together. A shame that they chose Maxtor hard drives. I could only imagine using WD RE2 drives that it would last ages. Re-confirms my beliefs that 3ware makes some of the best RAID hardware though. @Jaqie Fox: Cheaper ain't always better. I dunno, that nGear one seems a little more reliable. Plus $30 CAD vs $15 USD, not a huge difference.
  3. As bledd mentioned, Virus Scanner, Anti-Spyware or other similar program "could" be causing the hang. A second thing to check also, perhaps your Internet Explorer cache is corrupt.
  4. Out of curiosity, how can you go through so many? And I'm pretty sure I can get you a lot quantity for $1 or less each...
  5. Reminds me of a famous quote from QDB:
  6. @crahak: You make a lot of sense. I guess the most practical and economical solution is the one option I was trying to talk myself out of. At the current moment, technology as it is, it's foolish to try to find a different method as it's just not feasible. And by the way, that cable? OMG. That's going to become my second favorite tool when I fix client's computers. My favorite right now is my D-Link High Speed USB 2.0 Fast Ethernet Adapter.
  7. Sounds like subnet mismatching or routing issues.
  8. That's only true if he's already plugged the device in the same port before. When a device is plugged into the computer for the first time, or in a new port (even if installed before in another port), it ALWAYS has to install drivers. @Wesmosis: If your hard drive is heavily fragmented, is having performance issues or is generally an rather old hard drive, those will affect the time it takes for the new hardware wizard to find drivers. Make sure your hard drive is defragmented and in good health.
  9. Case: Any case by Antec is a good choice. Ram: Any gaming memory from OCZ or Corsair is a good choice.
  10. I'm not sure where to look for prices in Europe, but the Viewsonic VA1912wb should be at a similar price with 3 years warranty.
  11. Personally, if it's not a reputable brand of LCDs such as Viewsonic and/or NEC, I wouldn't bother.
  12. Try the following: Click on the "Sounds and Audio Devices" under the control panel Click on the "Audio" tab Click the "Advanced" button under "Sound Playback" Click the "Performance" tab Move the slider for "Hardware Acceleration" all the way to the left to "None"
  13. If I read your post correctly, you went from Two hard drives in RAID for your windows to a Single hard drive?
  14. What is your RAID controller?
  15. Even though I'm not a big fan of the idea of backing up to hard drives, aside from tape, which in itself is a very costly solution, I think I found something that could perhaps help. Western Digital My Book Pro. It's small enough that it could be stored in a lock box if need be, the hard drive is protected, and it stores 500GB via a Firewire 800 port. Since my backups are going to be incremental, I would only need about one per 500GB of backup I do. Only thing I didn't quite figure out yet is which method is more cost-effective...
  16. It can also happen if there is enough of a problem with the communication between the RDP client and terminal services. (ie: dropped packets, heavy heavy traffic, etc).
  17. I doubt the server is responsible. I would suspect that he instead installed something on your pc to spy on you.
  18. Ironically, I'm originally from Vancouver, BC... but fully fluent in both English and French.
  19. LCD monitors have a fixed resolution. When a lower resolution then the native resolution of the monitor is displayed, two things can happen depending on the settings of the monitor. "Stretching off" -> The image will appear in the center of the monitor taking up the exact number of pixels as the resolution displayed. (A 800x600 resolution on a 1600x1200 monitor would take up exactly half the screen with a big black border on all sides.) "Stretching on" -> The image will fill the entire monitor and it will use aliasing to fill up the missing pixels. Here's an example with my monitor of the difference:
  20. Improper resolution matching is due to a driver problem, either with the video card or the monitor, as allen2 mentioned. Sometimes simply uninstalling both video card and monitor drivers and re-installing both is sufficient.
  21. Unfortunately, not every LCD manufacturer handles resolution changes the same way. I have a good feeling that it's simply the way that your monitor deals with resolution changes. Using a DVI connector will help the problem, turning off "stretching", if possible, may also help.
  22. Does this allow you to combine videos also? Yes. You can even make a menu if you'd like. Or simply add them one after another and they'll play back to back.
  23. You add them as if they were a Windows hotfix.
  24. ConvertXtoDVD will do the job nicely for you.
  25. That's a good bit of the reason I am so blatent with mine (custom title and changed username)... I got tired of having to correct people That and the fact that you chose Amy Rose as your avatar and not Sonic The Hedgehog.
