  1. I got scared off of Seagate when I had to RMA a batch of about 30 different 40GB and 60GB hard drives... mind you, that was out of a lot of several hundred, but still... Western Digital is the only company I've never sent an RMA to. I'm perplexed on how people have come to distrust a company I trust so much, or the inverse, how people can trust so much a company I distrust so much. I guess it's like all things in life, personal experiences make it hard to change your mind.
  2. No offence intended, but I actually choked on what I had in my mouth when I read that. It's ironic how different people's experiences can be. I figured we could have some debate about hard drives, so I created a poll here so that we could discuss it some more. If you're going to get a 150GB raptor, get the one WITHOUT the window. The one with a window is a consumer level drive while the one without a window is an enterprise level drive. They both cost the same price (or very close to each other) but the enterprise level drive will last you much longer.
  3. Let's make this the definitive thread on hard drives. Let's debate, argue and exchange all our personal experiences, thoughts and opinions regarding current manufacturers of hard drives. I kept the poll down to the top 3 hard drive manufacturers because those are the ones that are the most significant in the current market.
  4. I'm still at a loss to understand what the big issue is. Si there's a 167Kb waste. Okay... on a 500GB hard drive, that's what?, a 0.03% waste? Is that really significant? Just installing the latest game takes up several GBs of hard drive space, and even then, it's still not significant. I can hardly see the point of worrying about it. And by the way, I'm honestly not sure, but /Zi /O0 sounds like debugging, not release, switches to me considering /Zi is for complete debugging info. And you know, I would rather see a program compiled with /O2 (optimize for speed) then with your choice of /O1 (optimize for size). I program that is faster is, IMHO, hundreds of times better then a program that is smaller by a few KB. I would rather have a program that's 100MB in size if it's a 100x faster then the one that's 100KB anyday.
  5. What in the world... it was working, now it stopped... ?
  6. LMAO Another Sony Rootkit fiasco anyone?
  7. You could also create a free space optics (FSO) link... (http://www.systemsupportsolutions.com/)
  8. The settings in the control panel work for me everywhere except for View New Posts... which is where it's the most needed. :S
  9. No problem at all, and if you'd like I can post the update list on wud's home page.
  10. Stil 30.
  11. Simply get yourself a socket 370 heatsink that has three hole clips.
  12. Still says 30 here... Ditto.
  13. Aside from the single issue I have (had) with my 3Com network card, which we can't even necessarily put the blame on the motherboard for, Foxconn motherboards are very very stable. A lot of people don't even know that Foxconn is the world's largest OEM. Foxconn makes most of the motherboards, circuit boards, connectors for most large OEMs such as Dell and HP/Compaq.
  14. As I've pointed out before, it's not - it's off the PCI-e bus, thus solving the PCI latency issues. Actually, it's not, it's wired through the PCI bus. The NIC is a Broadcom BCM5788KFB which is a PCI GbE NIC. Also, see here: http://www.foxconnchannel.com/Product/moth...ID=en-us0000006
  15. Regardless of what the endless debates say, the best location for a pagefile is on a seperate physical disk which is another one then the one where your windows is.
  16. That's extremely unlikely. As ppl said before, no cable modem out there resets / reinitializes / is back online within 2 seconds or even anything near that. My surfboard SB5101 takes more like a whole minute. My bet is still on the router. More so, no router reboots in that time-frame either. Just the DHCP renewal takes more then that.
  17. Why would you put a $1,200 processor on a motherboard worth less then that?
  18. There's actually a very good article about that very subject here: http://joelonsoftware.com/items/2006/11/21.html
  19. Please keep discussions in English. Thank you.
  20. But why the 3com and not the broadcom? Even if the Broadcom is on-board, it's still wired in through the PCI bus.
  21. Okay, here's an update based on everyone's recommendations and my further testing. As wonderfully stable as my Foxconn motherboard is, it unfortunately does not offer me a great deal of control over certain things. It so happens to be the case with the PCI settings. I can only reserve ISA IRQs, none of the PCI ones. Also, enabling ACPI pretty much eliminates any kind of control I could have on the IRQs. I did however try changing my 3Com network card from the 2nd PCI slot to the 1st one (I only have 2 PCI slots). The IRQ did change (as expected) from 17 to 22, yet nothing changed. So I'm going to take a stab and guess that IRQ related issues are not the cause. I could not find anyway, either through my BIOS or through Windows, to adjust any PCI latency settings. So I can't comment on that. Physically removing my 3Com network card and re-enabling my on-board Broadcom 5788 network card did solve the problem. I ran 25 consecutive speed tests on my 3Com, then on my Broadcom network cards. Even though with the Broadcom I no longer get any stuttering in the audio, I do experience a drop in speed. The average download speed for my 3Com is 9333 Kbps while the average download speed for my Broadcom is 9221 Kbps. The 3Com probably has better hardware TCP/IP off-loading. The 3Com is certainly showing it's age and most likely the reason why I was experiencing stuttering. It still bothers me that I haven't been able to nail exactly WHAT caused the stuttering.
  22. Western Digital 250GB are at a very good price right now.
  23. Buy another hard drive pronto and Ghost it before it's too late.
  24. I too wish there was a way to see more thread per page. And honestly, it would help reduce the load on the server. I often do a "View New Posts" and right-click open each thread in a new page/tab. If I could view, say, 100 threads per page, I wouldn't even have to change pages most often.
  25. Viewsonic or NEC, personally.
