does it work on the same machine with a different os? what was installed prior to windows 7? which drive did you use to install windows 7?

i believe the media player (which is used by media center) is still a beta and they are working on video playback. i had a problem playing an avi full screen with media player. i got audio but no video and moreover, the keyboard wouldn't work. i had to cold reboot. the video played fine in media player classic. anyway, i don't think a tweak will fix it. might just have to wait for future builds before things are worked out.

Lots of speculation as to which is the RC build. Thus far, 7057 is not the RC as the invert function is not there. Another feature that was removed is "Restore Previous Folders at Logon". I really like this feature. MS just deliberately removes things that people get used to.

In build 7057, the current latest version of Comodo Firewall (3.8.65951.477) works without errors and tray icon animation also works, when installed under Vista SP1 compatibility mode.

Yes, Office 2007 can update itself automatically with latest updates. I do believe it's not related to the OS so it will do it for any OS. Unsure about previous versions of Office. And yes, you can enable online search for help.

I hate when programs add their entries like that. Open Regedit.exe. Find the file type in question in HKEY_Classes_ROOT. Like, if it's bitmaps (*.bmp), then go to that key. Under (default), it tells you what program it opens with. For example, Paint.Picture. Go to Paint.Picture under the same HKEY_Classes_ROOT. Go to shell. I would back up that. Then delete the entries you want to get rid of. These are simple instructions. You might have to do some snooping around for your particular case.

That's an annoying feature, I know. Especially when you extract files and they get auto sorted and you wanted them extracted to a folder instead. I'd be interested in this, too.

Well, with windows 7, that changed all that. You no longer need more than one partition if you install to a VHD. See post here: Install Windows 7 to VHD. Installing to a VHD is a cleaner way to test Windows 7.

You can also make some minor changes in "Startup and Recovery". It does not allow you to delete an entry but it does allow you to change the timeout and the default OS. Maybe can be set 0 so it boots the OS you want. However, EasyBCD might be the easiest way with GUI interface. Note that EasyBCD does not support installs on VHD so don't try to mess with those yet.

I didn't understand what you mean by XP pack. At what point do you get an error in command prompt. You don't see a command prompt with XP until after XP has booted successfully and you have to call it manually. Did you actually install an OS in virtual pc? If not, that is what you need to do. You need an XP installation OS, mount the ISO and install it. That will make your VM bootable.

You may be aware that Windows 7 can be installed to a VHD virtual hard disk as described here. The advantage is that you don't have to repartition your physical hard drive. I was wondering if anyone has tried the same with Windows XP. I had some ideas and was looking for more ideas on ways to accomplishing this. First idea was to simply install Win 7 to a file called win7.vhd. Once finished, then replaced win7.vhd with a virtual pc install of windows xp, meaning, rename your windows xp install to win7.vhd. This doesn't work as there's more to booting a VHD OS that just the file name. Second idea is to install Win 7 to win7.vhd. Once finished, then go back and install XP using virtual pc. Then see if xp boots. I haven't had a chance to try this one yet. Obviously, there are issues with hardware... but this is for experimenting only. Any more idea?

How many people use solid states drives? I'm thinking about buying a small 32 gb just for my OS install. I need advice on a good one that doesn't have the well-known problem of pausing or stuttering during writes. Also, since all of them I know are 2.5'', how to mount them in a 3.5'' bay.

Depends on how many licenses you have. Some student versions come with license to install on 3 computers. Read carefully on this.

I have no "extra" click to get to the flyout menu. simply move the mouse just like in xp and vista. How do you figure there is one more click to get to the classic flyout menu? And also, the "new" method is more than just one click. It is one click, scroll, scroll. And if you don't want to scroll scroll scroll, you have to take your hands off your mouse and actually type and as you type get "guesses" in return, and often presented with many options that are not even related to the place you are going. classic menu, one click, move mouse, last click. Very fast. And the human eye is already "looking" for what the end user is on the monitor, so having the "full" view from classic, items are easy to spot, instead of scrolling the all programs in that little window. And let's not forget movement memory pattern as that because habit and so ingrained into a users experience that everything becomes second nature. And when that has been the nature for 15+ years.. well... I will stop here. My point is, there is absolutely no extra clicking involved with the work around I found was referring to the "classic" menu workaround posted in the link. not the actual classic menu of 95/2000/xp. even if it opens by mouse-hover, who wants their classic menu back that far away on the screen from the corner. besides, for me, most of the commonly apps are already in the top 8. i have no need to go start--> programs --> look for apps. i can go to start --> app. besides, with a scroll wheel, searching for an app is not a chore as it's made out to be. why don't people just use a mac/linux instead of flaming this forum with useless complaints about windows and microsoft - which is what the forum is form.

Why would anyone bother to go to that length to get a "classic" menu? It's not classic to me as it involves more clicks. There again, people will click one more time for their "classic" but not the "new" start menu.

Nothing useful or productive is gonna come out of this thread except some steam. Should be closed unless we just like to argue for the sake of arguing. No one will win in my opinion. So, all I'm gonna say is.... I like the new start menu and I'm getting my way, nah nah na boo boo.

You mean http://www.addintools.com/english/menuoffice/default.htm. This has been discussed here many times. All it does is add a tab that mimics the classic menus. It's still a ribbon.

If you used a registry file (*.reg), then you can add a "-" (minus sign) after all "[" and in front of "HKCU" or HKLM" or whatever it may be and it will delete all those entries. Go over to vLite section. they have a thread about what you can and cannot remove with vLite. My VHD is 6.6 gig but it's only for testing purposes. I'm not planning to install much. I have office 2007, acrobat reader, windows live mail, virtual pc, comodo firewall, avast antivirus, roboform, firefox, realvnc, and coreavc codec installed. I end up with 1.3 gb free space. Also my pagefile is on a separate drive. Windows 7 set my non-VHD partition as the pagefile partition by default. My other essential apps are portable - winrar, imgburn, infrarecorder, ultraiso and reside on a separate partition. Anyway, when I do move on to Windows 7 when it's released, I'd probably give it 20 gb partition, although I know more space recommended.

Try Control Panel --> Mail settings or something similar. I believe Outlook adds configuration item in control panel.
