It would be a better option to copy the content of the CD/DVD onto a USB using someone else's computer, then putting it onto yours. Downloading program, unless you pay for them at the site, is not legal. I advice against continuing the topic of downloading Office.

When I had Vista SP1 x64, I could put the computer to sleep and it was almost instantaneous. It aslo resumed from sleep instantaneously without a problem. Now, in Windows 7 RC x64, there is a strange occurrence with sleep, although Windows 7's sleep acts more like hibernate than sleep. When I put Windows 7 to sleep, it takes a good few seconds (much longer than Vista) before computer goes to sleep. Then, when I try to resume from sleep, it turns on but I get no video input, leaving me to reset the system. When I do reset the system, it seems to be restarting from POST from the beginning, but the continues to "Resume Windows" as if went into hibernation. And what do you know. All the users are still logged on and no crash report. So it does go into hibernation and not sleep and pressing reset does not really shut the system and cause shutdown error. Well, I'm glad my system is not crashing like in Vista but I really want it to go to sleep, not hibernate. Is this supposed to be a feature or a problem? I should note that this does not happen on my laptop, which does have distinction between sleep and hibernation.

My sweetspot is not really the taskbar. I reverted back to the old way of icon+text. It only groups them into an icon only when too many windows open. But my true sweetspot is the jumplist!!! I keep wanting the jumplist in Vista and get irritated that it's not there. How did I go all these years without the jumplist? So convenient. Now using Win 7 RC on my laptop and desktop exclusively, ever since my Vista stopped working unexpectedly. Good riddens.

Well after installing Windows 7, vista boot option is gone. I'll have to add it back with bcdedit. I'll try it when I have free time.

I found my main desktop computer (see sig below for specs) in a continuous loop. It has Vista SP1 x64 installed. It would go to the screen with startup options and asks if you want to boot normally or in safe mode. Obviously, after 30 seconds it chooses to boot normally, then before the progress bar comes up, it blanks out and reboots. I don't know what the problem is. I checked my memory with Windows Memory Diagonistic and after 1 pass of 6 tests, it was okay. I have installed Windows 7 RC for now on a different partition. The vista partition seems to be okay. I booted to Vista PE and it was accessible. It's find in Windows 7 as well. Doesn't seem to be a hard drive problem. Anything else I can try? (Windows 7 setup ran extremely slow on my desktop. It does something at the "Setup is starting" for minutes - probably more than 5 minutes. Then again right before copying files." After install, it's fine). It doesn't pause like this on my slower laptop!)

Anyone has been able to dual boot and compare Vista SP2 with Windows 7 RC, in terms of boot time, speed, stability, responsiveness, etc. I'm curious if SP2 brings the same improvements as Windows 7 has been so far.

Yes, I've used it to make a custom CD that installs only the components I want so I don't have to configure it every time I install. Have you checked here. I haven't "deployed" office; only made my custom Office.

I believe it's looking for content such as programs, pictures, music, and videos for all external devices. It then presents you with a dialog asking you what to do, e.g. automatically play music or videos. I think it also makes sure no program runs that's not supposed to as a security feature because viruses can spread with the AutoPlay feature. MS has changed the way AutoPlay works now. Anyway, go to control panel, click on AutoPlay, and all the settings are there. You can disable it globally.

You definitely have a drivers issue. I'm running fine on my IBM Laptop. While it's not any faster than any previous build, it's just as snappy, and snappier than XP and Vista on this system.

I never had a problem after removing the following components. Just reinstalled RC without a single problem. I tend not to remove a whole lot though. You can't create a x64 version of XP or Vista on an x86 system. If you want to make x64 Vista, you need a x64 bit environment. I'm not sure why but that's the requirement. Try it your self. I tried it and it complained to me. So I had to install Vista x64, then vLite and reinstall with x64 Vista; or something like that. I can't remember. It was too long ago.

I've been removing "manual setup" for all builds since 7000 and haven't had a problem installing Windows 7 on virtual pc or a vhd install or a physical partition install. I can't remember if manual install is necessary for something or not after the installation, but it will install without problems.

1. no file size summary in the "details pane." Only shows how many items. Now I have to select all files and choose properties and then i can see what size they use. - I'd have to agree. It doesn't show the file size total of all files like it used to in XP. It's annoying. 2. can't "breadcrumb" up to the desktop - Sure you can, see picture below. You can even add desktop to you favorites as I have done. 6. long filenames are truncated and hidden. - sometimes it's better to truncate. 9. The new super bar requires two clicks and identification of a thumbnail. I find this much slower then the classic with an icon and name. - just change the taskbar setting to "never combine". you'll go back to the classic way of displaying tasks in taskbar. 10. Sort by tabs like size and name should be present in all view modes. Yes, sometimes I wish it wouldn't assume I need a "rating" column just because I have one picture of music file in the folder. This is one annoying feature. I don't care for rating in any of my folders. But anyway. you just have to work with it. No OS is perfect.

I prefer a single left-click period, rather than a right-click, then move the mouse to left-click on "Undo Closed Tab". Way better when using a laptop! Especially when you need to reopen several closed tabs.

Actually, the file names are different. For SP1, the are of the sort *sp1.msp. For SP2, then are *sp2.msp. But you are correct. Just delete all files in Updates folder and copy the extracted SP2 files.

Chicken and egg, indeed, but it's definitely more complex than that. I'd have to say, we're getting there. MS is out for profit. Most people use x86 and their biggest product is Office. It's MORE PROFITABLE for them to continue x86 line right now. But with the next office, if rumors are correct, they are releasing x64. So, it's a slow process but the tides are turning. And hopefully within a few years, x64 will be more profitable for MS and other software companies.

have you tried pasting it? word is smart enough to ignore that space anyway. when pasting it, it's smart enough to include just one space before and one space after. it doesn't matter if you paste that word without leaving a space before or after it, it still corrects your paste job. same goes for sentences or paragraphs. try it.
