  1. I believe the Add-in tab is a built-in tab. You probably can't add to this one. Try creating your own custom tab and add your buttons there.
  2. I'm getting blue screen of death when I choose to apply in the last step. It starts the updates integration process but blue screens pretty instantly. I have AV disabled. In the blue screen, the file aswsp.sys is listed. Anyone? Edit: I learned that it's related to Avast antivirus. Is there a way to disable it temporarily without having to uninstall? Even if I disable on access protection, it blue screens so I need a way to prevent it from running without uninstalling.
  3. I looked at both these cards. I decided to order the HD 3450 by Asus for 36 - 10 rebate = $26. But, AAAARRRRGGG! My current card ATI Radeon X600 supports Aero! Before I installed the ATI drivers, the performance score was 1.0 for graphics. However, when I went to properties, it said you need to refresh your score because of a hardware change. I didn't change any hardware but I refreshed anyway and now my score is 2.7 and Aero got activated automatically. Well, I pull the old one and put it in my old desktop and install new one that arrives into this new desktop.
  4. KB931212 update is for .Net framework, not Windows Messenger. The update you download depends on which you version you have installed.
  5. OP updated with October security updates with 5 Windows XP updates and 1 IE 7 update. I deleted individual IE7 updates since the latest cumulative update should include all previously released updates. In hindsight, I now regret changing all my links from Security Bulletin links to direct download links, as some of these updates apply to multiple platforms. Oh well. I'm not sure how long I can keep up if MS continues to plug holes like this. I have moved on to Vista x64, so I'll continue as long as I can until I give up on XP.
  6. Hey! Don't dampen my spirits. I think it a little faster than 32-bit and a bit more responsive. Unlike 32-bit, when UAC pops up, it halts the system, 64-bit seems to be a bit snappier with UAC pop ups. My performance score is 1.0, however, because I'm lacking a good Graphics card. Could use some advice about choosing a good one just for Aero. Here's link to what I'm looking for: http://www.msfn.org/board/Cheapest-Video-C...ero-t86721.html.
  7. The OP was written 2 years ago. Well, now I'm asking the same question. What is a good cheap graphics card for Aero for Vista 64-bit (with dual boot XP 32-bit). My criteria are < $50 usd, PCIe 2.0, Vista x64 compatible, ATI chipset, fanless if possible. I found several but I'm having a hard time choosing from 4000 series, 3000 series, etc. I don't do gaming. Just need it for Aero.
  8. That was more clear. Thanks.
  9. I tried ViStart and thought it much better and customizable than XP's own menu. However, I agree with #2 above. You cannot resize ViStart. I abandoned it for that sole purpose. I couldn't stand the empty space on the right side.
  10. I had to right-click on wimfiltr.inf and install to get it to work, in addition to copying wimgapi.dll to vLite folder. Edit: Oh, but let me add that I didn't install WAIK as I thought it was wasteful.
  11. Never thought of using an HDTV as a monitor, but I would take the above advice into consideration. However, if you still insist on HDTV, I would avoid Plasma for picture burn-in risk! Go with LCD.
  12. (Yes, I know Windows 32-bit won't see more that ~3 Gb. I am dual booting Win 32-bit and Vista 64-bit. Reason I'm increasing memory is for Vista's benefit.) You're saying I won't see a performance gain in Vista x64 by increasing from 2 GB to 6 GB? I'm not into gaming but I do encode/decode videos.
  13. my guess is the OP doesn't have WAIK installed, and therefore, the filter drivers are not installed. when they aren't, it will give you an error when mounting. it's the same with vlite. you don't necessarily have to install the 1 gb waik. you just need a few necessary files such as wimgapi.dll, wimfltr.inf, and some file called fltmgr.inf. right-click on wimfltr.inf and do install. do same for the fltmgr.inf. this does the trick for vlite and should be able to mount images. See http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?sho...6&hl=imagex for the list of files. It's the list for bartpe plugin but it will work as standalone for xp as well. just need to gather those files in one folder and install the inf's from there and should work.
  14. Hey, all. I need help with adding more memory to my PC. I have Gigabyte ga-p35-ds3l with Intel core 2 duo processor. Currently, I have 2 corsair 1 gb x 2 sticks (CORSAIR XMS2 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 675 (PC2 5400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory). I want to add 4 GB (2 x 2 GB) for a total of 6 GB for Vista x64 OS. I have 4 memory slots. Question is: Can I mix 2 x 2 GB and 2 x 1 GB for a total of 6 GB or will I have to have all four of the same capacity? Another question: I'm looking at Corsair 4 GB right now. Currently, I have PC2 5400 and this is PC2 6400. Does that make a difference in mixing it up? Thank you all.
  15. I had no idea my system supports x64 bit. I have a Gigabyte ga-p35-ds3l and intel core 2 duo processor. Just installed Vista x64 ultimate and it's fast so far. I'm gonna try to live on Vista now. Will have trouble with a one legacy hardware - my scanner. Other than that, I think I have found all x64 drivers. It's time to play!
  16. makecab smss.exe should do the trick. it should automatically name it smss.ex_. type makecab /? or makecab /help for help on parameters. makecab is found in system32 folder.
  17. What you are experiencing is "Red Book Specifications" for Audio CD's. According to Red Book specs, audio cd's should hold 74 minutes including a 2 second pause between each track. If you search for red book, you'll find these specs. Most software will try to comply with red book specs, including Sony CD Architect; however, CD Architect will also give you warning about red book and let you burn 80 mins of audio anyway. There may be other software that will let you burn 80 mins as well.... So that's why your CD keeps going to a "second" CD. As far as your gapless playback, WMP does not insert gaps by itself! Most CDs, because they comply with red book have 2 second gaps and thus, WMP will play these gaps. The trick is to burn without gaps. When I burn audio books, I like to make 10 min tracks without gaps so audio uninterrupted. I do that in Sony CD Architect and it works fine in WMP11. If you are using WMP to rip or burn your music, you are probably using one of the worst tools (if you can even call it that). Again Winamp can let you burn a compilation CD as well although it might not be as obvious to do as other programs. If your looking to have complete control over the CD layout with custom crossfades/overlaps, and be able to control the level of each song including efx or eq, then you should definately get Sony CD Architect It's definately worth it!
  18. Why not download Microsoft Base Security Analyzer. It will tell you all the updates your system needs (Windows, Office, .Net, IE, WMP, Messenger, etc. etc. etc.) and provides direct link? No WGA required. Yes, it is a prog you have to install but still, it'll let you know if you're missing something.
  19. why would you? waik is like almost 1 gb. all it does is mostly copy the files to your HDD and it registers some dll's and filters needed for imagex. all you really need to do is right click on a couple of inf and do install. i think they are wimfltr.inf and filtmgr.inf or something like that. other than that, waik just copies the files to your program files folder...
  20. well, first of all you need to make a backup of the ISO you're modifying cause anything can go wrong. second, 20GB?? What format ISO will you use? afaik there are no formats that support 20 GB. blu-ray and HD-dvd are new and they may support such images... but i don't think any iso editor does 20 gb right now.
  21. i believe it's netshell.dll.
  22. I played around with VBox some more and a couple of things were irritating: 1) Somehow it screwed up my HDD registration after doing the some snapshots to the point where I couldn't start the VM I had created. What's with this HDD registration? 2) Networking is overly complicated if you plan to network guest and host... you have to create a network bridge. VPC is so simple, nothing needed at all, it just works.
  23. You may want to set a dirty bit so that C: is scanned on startup. At command prompt, type: fsutil dirty set C:. See fsutil
  24. Yup, use a form or table. Otherwise, a ___ is a character and will move when you type something. Or, you can simply draw a line using Word's draw if you don't want to use a form or table. Simple as that.
  25. Hummm, I've never head of that edition. Sounds like warez...
