VirtualBox is as easy as VirtualPC and VirtualPC is a no hassle. However, remember that since VPC is free and a small program, it won't offer USB support, which means your USB flash drive will be detected by your physical machine but not by your virtual machine. VirtualBox on the other hand offers USB support. Networking is simple in VPC but I had a little trouble with VBox (it may have been because I was using it on my laptop with wireless; I had to bridge the networking to get it to work. Anyway, either are great for testing purposes and both are free so you won't get many features but still good enough. VMWare, however, gives lots of features but is massive. For me, for testing software for home use, I don't use VMWare.

I am using SP3. I also have a multi-card-reader. I will try to see if Panasonic card formatter can read it from multi-card reader rather than a USB one. Otherwise, I will have to call Transend. Thanks for link!

I've tried Panasonic's SD Card Formatter. However, the program hangs when the card is inserted. Therefore, I haven't been able to successfully use this programs. Once I remove, the program starts working again. I'll try the hotfix and will let you know but I never had a problem reading this card before without the hotfix. Thanks.

I couldn't find a discussion of the difference between lite and micro. Please, can anyone tell me what's in and what's not in lite vs micro. thanks.

Windows XP Post SP3 Security Updates + IE7 and WMP11
spacesurfer replied to spacesurfer's topic in Windows XP
Updated with 5 security updates so far (4 XP and 1 Windows Explorer or you can do the cumulative). I think this takes care of August updates. *** Also, I changed all links to their direct download rather than their security bulletin link (MSXX-YYY). I left the .Net vulnerability to its security bulletin article because you have to download the update for your version of .Net Framework. If you need the KB or security bulletin, it's on the download page anyway.*** -
Sorry, with 400 posts, I thought you'd know what a command prompt is and would recognize the "dir" command. I guess I was wrong.

I have a 16 GB Transcend SDHC card. I used to format it with my camcorder but I think last time, I formatted in Windows. I'm not sure though and if I did, I'm not sure if I did FAT32 for FAT. I know I didn't do NTFS. Anyway, the card is not recognized by my camcorder. It won't let me format it saying "cannot be formatted." Well, the card won't show in XP using my Transcend card reader either. Same in Vista. I also tried a multi card reader and still no show. Is there any way I can get this card formatted - format it RAW so my camcorder can read it. It's an expensive card. Thanks. Update ------- Okay so I read the manual and it says not to use a PC to format the darn card as movie recording will be slow or not possible. So, I missed that point and made a mistake. FINE, but can't I format the card in a PC and use the darn card for the PC??? Darn Panasonic camcorder didn't have to chew up my card because it can't read a PC formatted card.

Cannot create slipsteam disc Unable to locate SP3 exe
spacesurfer replied to howardg6's topic in Windows XP
did you download sp3? see my sig post-sp3 updates. it's got a link to sp3 download. personally, i would rather manually update to sp3. it's really simple. -
not sure how to display just the filename without path, but this could be a start: dir /s /b and you can do dir /s /b /o:n to alphabetize

I love your metallic themes, the colors. but what I don't like is the ugly xp shapes. could you not redo all the button shapes (start button, maximize, close, restore, etc) buttons to a more refined vista-like or any decent ones; not like the kiddy look of xp? then your themes would look great and I'd be very tempted to change mine.

Budget DVD burner recommendations
spacesurfer replied to smilejack1's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
I have a samsung (sata with lightscribe). love it and haven't had a problem. it's also very quiet. It's cheaper than the pioneer above and free shipping: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16827151171. -
You couldn't have missed this http://www.msfn.org/board/Install-XP-from-USB-f157.html, now could you have?

I'm not sure if this will work, but how about replacing the shell32.dll in c:\windows\system32\dllcache\ folder with your patched one. Then, it will replace the one in system32 with that one.

I want to include logonui_cust.exe in my I386 folder of install CD and have it automatically copy to the system32 folder during install. I have compressed it with makecab and renamed it logonui2.ex_. When I expand it, it expands correctly with the long filename. However, what entry is needed in txtsetup.sif file so that it will copy during install? is it logonui2.ex_ = 1,,,,,,,2,0,0 or logonui_cust.exe = 1,,,,,,,2,0,0 or something else. It seems it would be the latter since that is what the file will actually be called and all the other files are like that in txtsetup.sif.

definitely msgina.dll. you may want to replace bitmaps and some icons. you might have to replace it offline. not sure if it will work in safe mode.

i've seen some many posts about peoples winsxs being > 1 gb! i don't understand. mines always been < 50 mb even with > 20 programs.
-
you can have two. just partition the way you want. i don't know any freeware partition programs but you will have to partition offline if your xp is installed on c:\ where c:\ is not partitioned. i am planning to install a full xp and an nlited (very ultra lite) xp on another partition, instead of bartpe since you can do a lot more, like installing apps on an actual xp. xp install is also much faster than bartpe.

Best (a really relative term) is one you need at the moment, cause some use zip, some use rar, some gzip, etc. You gotta use the one that does the job. If it doesn't support your archive type you're trying to extract or create, SOL. Or, the best is one you're satisfied with... Personally, I prefer Winrar, fastest or not, tightest or not or BEST or not. However, I also started using gzip because grub can load gzipped floppy images.

Delete normal.dot. your toolbar settings are stored in that file. It is found in "%userprofile%\application data\microsoft\templates"

did you try 16-bit, btw? this is happening at my workplace and i just changed from 32-bit to 16-bit and the ugly black outlines/shadows disappeared. however, the icons are low quality, though. strange.

No CD and CRW drives after the installation of XP SP3
spacesurfer replied to Aloha's topic in Windows XP
that is not the case as he posted (and later took down) an image which showed his drives in device manager with the yellow caution exclamation points. obviously windows can see they are there but aren't able to utilize them--most likely because of driver problem. try right clicking on them in device manager and see it it's due to irq conflict (i don't know much about that but play around in the right click menu). -
Your picture seems peculiarly familiar, like that of Neo's. You're not the another incarnation of Neo, are you?

when you search, you are probably pulling up a "recent document" rather than the actual folder. it's just a shortcut to it. if it's gone, it might really be gone.
