  1. I would prefer to make it a bit future-proof - eventually, maybe in a year, i want to replace it with a Core i7. But since these multi-core processors require less power, wouldn't that mean you don't need high wattage?
  2. i have this problem occasionally. all you can do is repair and not let it bug you too much, cause there are bigger problems in the OS than this - like the darn standby issues!!!
  3. have you tried checking out the multibooting section??? really, who cares!! aren't we over this multibooting this and that DVD's yet? by the time you make this perfect multibooting dvd, you realize it's not perfect, something doesn't work or there is a new SP out.... ..
  4. I'll need more than 380 watts don't I - with 2 roms and 1 and maybe another HDD?
  5. I got 5577 on my first go and I called it quits. Seems you have more time to waste than me, huh?
  6. You do not need to "Extend your desktop". Extending the desktop does exactly what it says. It extends the desktop but does not replace your laptops LCD with it. With extending the desktop, you can drag windows to your external monitor. What you need to do is click on Fn + F7 or Fn + X, where X is the key that displays the external monitor icon on your Fn keys. You may have to click a couple of times until your laptop LCD blanks out and your desktop is displayed on your external monitor. I hope you don't have nVidia. I'm having a hell of a time getting my sister's laptop with vista to connect to my HDTV. Seems to be the nVidia drivers.
  7. A good PSU for about $50 USD? I have 2 SATA HDD, 2 CD/DVD (1 IDE and 1 SATA). I'm thinking 600 watts should be enough. I need at least 3 SATA connectors. I do have converters but would be great if the PSU had at least 2. What is the diff between 24 pin and 20+4 pin? I'm looking at this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817162017
  8. Yes, I am suspecting the power supply... if it was failing, it would also cause hard drive problems, wouldn't it if the hard drive didn't receive enough power... cause I really think there is nothing wrong with my HDD as the SMART report showed everything was okay but it just crapped out twice prob from not enough power. Also, how long do CMOS batteries usually last? My mobo is 3.5 years old. I've never replaced that battery before. I'll look into that as well. Thanks.
  9. My old computer that I built has a ASUS P5GDC-V mobo and a Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz processor. It's not turning on anymore. When I open the case, I see that the green light is on inside. But it just won't turn on at all - no POST, no DVD/CD drive lights come on like they usually do when first turning on. So, question is: 1) Could it be that my PSU needs replacement? I've been having a HDD problem in that one as well - it crapped out a couple of times - would not getting power to HDD cause it to be not detected at times? 2) Would the green light on mean that the PSU works? 3) If the processor is burned out, would the computer turn on at all to POST? If I can't get it to work, then I think I'm gonna have to shell out some money for a new MOBO + processor and will need help with choosing the right one. I got an okay from my honey-bunny <--- very important! Thanks.
  10. Well I have these files and yet my DESKTOP won't hibernate or sleep. It comes right back on. Very very few times it does sleep but when it does and I restart, the USB keyboard won't come back on. I'd have to restart to get the keyboard working. Any dependencies you can think of for that??
  11. perhaps it's disabled in bios. go into bios using a usb keyboard and see if you find an options for using your ps/2 keyboard and enable it.
  12. if you visited safe sites, then the tracking cookie might actually be safe and your antivirus is over-reacting. when i do a scan, it always finds loads of tracking cookies and they are to sites i've visited. if you don't want to be tracked, you need to turn off cookies in your browser.
  13. I think certain programs install SQL Server also. It's probably there for a reason - maybe a program you installed. If you uninstall and a program stops working, you may have to reinstall it.
  14. it's strange that i have the same problem on my desktop but not on my laptop although the vLited was teh same.
  15. yes, once vLite is done, its exactly the same except the boot sector.
  16. What's wrong with it is that it's not productive when you want to copy X number of files found in Y number of folders all to the same folder. In this case you would have to click Z number of times by going to Y number of folders and copying them. With Teracopy, you can put all those files is a queue and copy them at once! And there are other benefits.
  17. the msdn version of vista with sp1 is about 6 gb. it contains all version x86 and x64. so, one can assume that the wim images are optimized as compared to the one you're making on your own. and yes, 6 gb = dual layer.
  18. see the links in my signature. it has a link for post-sp3 updates. download them. also download ie7 (in the .exe). then, check the hotfixes option in nlite and just insert all of the updates, including ie7. it will be updated by nlite.
  19. see my post here http://www.msfn.org/board/Size-vLite-s-ISO-t125669.html
  20. Yes, I confirmed that I did remove the video drivers with vLite and I CAN hibernate and sleep. But I did install the latest graphics drivers so that my be your problem.
  21. Try printing on another printer and see if you get better quality. if not, then the fonts may be low quality fonts to begin with. where did you get these fonts?
  22. I am multibooting XP and Vista. I have a folder called "My Finances" that I created in XP and my profile is the owner and no one else can access this folder (of course another can take ownership). I would like to access this folder in Vista also without having to take ownership back and forth between XP and Vista. How do I add my XP credentials to Vista so I can access the folder in both OS's? Thanks.
  23. If it supports it, then why not x64. It may not be faster but you can take advantage of being able to install more memory. You will get better performance with more memory, especially with multi-tasking and running virtual machines. More and more apps are written in 64-bit now so it's definitely the future.
  24. another case of "resurrecting an old post" syndrome. the remedy for you illness is to read the dates of the posts.... as the argument is now old and probably not worth digging it out from the graveyard.
  25. seems like they tried to make it simpler with the standard view with winxp but i always reverted to the classic view as i always knew where i wanted to go. i hated the standard view. however, with the control panel items exploding in vista (slight exaggeration), i also feel it needs to be revamped (but not merged all into one). i think only a few items should be consolidated into categories: disk management (chkdsk, defrag, repartition), display option (everything related to graphics, themes, etc.), devices (all about devices printers, scanners, sound, mouse, keyboard etc.), system settings (folder options, date/time, internet options). otherwise, i like that power management, networking and few other things are available in one link rather than buried in menus. good news is that in win 7, there will be device stage for your devices. another thought is that only if the control panel was redesigned like the options menus in office 2007, that would be awesome. you can easily pick what you want on the left side bar and it would display what you picked in the windows on the right.
