  1. A "server" is something that "serves" (usually contents and usually according to a given protocol). FTP is such a protocol, it implies the use of a "client" and of a "server" program. In this case that app is (or should be) a "FTP server" (though thanks to the new idea of calling things with some other names it is called differently). However the "tags" are correct : On the other side (your Windows XP or 7) you run a "client" that should connect to the server and allow you to see the files (contents) of the phone. Explorer (and most browsers) do allow (besides local and http paths) also ftp access, but there are a number of parameters (sometimes not-so-easy to set/inspect/change) that may make the setup not working. You should try to use a "specific" FTP Client program to attempt connecting, as such a program will allow you to see what the client "asks" and what the server "responds", if you are attempting to use it in Explorer (or in a normal browser) a number of security settings/firewall/antivirus/etc. may be involved in the issue. A good, simple program (old and not anymore supported) is LeechFTP: http://www.leechftp.de/ a more recent, supported one is WinSCP: https://winscp.net/eng/docs/free_ftp_client_for_windows but even a couple commands in the console should be enough to understand what the problem is: http://www.xpertmart.com/Manual/Synchronization_Test_FTP_Server.html Seemingly the program you used is a very simple FTP server with no particular settings, so it should work "out of the box", if you cannot make it work, you can try some alternatives, such as (same "Wi-Fi Transfer" name, and same FTP protocol used): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.kenig39apps.wifitransfer&hl=en or this one (strangely similar to the one you posted a link to): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mbapp.ftpserver or this one (with some added options, useful also for troubleshooting): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=lutey.FTPServer&hl=en jaclaz
  2. Anything of use here? http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/158547-wifi-with-wpa-support-windows-2000/ or here: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/107001-compatible-hardware-with-windows-9x/?page=7 jaclaz
  3. Are you trying to serve via FTP files residing on the phone, accessing them from another device? Which EXACT FTP server are you using? Which EXACT phone is it/which OS does it run? jaclaz
  4. It's cool, Linux, bash (as if we hadn't bash on NT since NT 3.51), you cannot really expect it to be also useful (or to be useful to anyone but those belonging to an extremely small subset of Windows users, those familiar with and liking Linux BUT using Windows 10, roughly 0.01% of the already small enough Windows 10 user base). JFYI: http://reboot.pro/topic/21074-windows-10-is-now-shipping-with-linux-command-line/ jaclaz
  5. JFYI, for a number of (TOTALLY UNCLEAR) reasons, Windows update has become a mess since several months, see here: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/175349-kb3083710-and-kb3102810-needed-for-windows-update/ Not earlier than three days ago, even after having run the "selfstanding" Windows Update referenced in the thread, a new install of 7 took more than 6 hours to complete the update list retrieving (before it took what seemed "forever" and I aborted the attempt). jaclaz
  6. Sure it is not. but please, do check #11 here: http://www.msfn.org/board/guidelines/ jaclaz

  9. To be fair not entirely original, Abraham Lincoln: http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/518576-you-can-have-anything-you-want-if-you-want-it said it well before The Queens: http://www.metrolyrics.com/innuendo-lyrics-queen.html and Charles M. Schultz: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6406159-peanuts (to name a few), Napoleon Hill, David Dickins, and numberless other people have used the concept ... As always : http://biblehub.com/ecclesiastes/1-9.htm jaclaz
  10. So am I, what gives? Care to expand on your comment? You can be anything you want. Please try explaining better what you mean. jaclaz

Hello! Thanks for helping out way back!

  12. Well, let's say that if we temporarily "suspend" the legal consequences/implications, a hard disk image can normally (with some tweaking) be "applied" and made working alright. jaclaz
  13. I guess a line needs to be drawn somewhere. Those lawsuits are something coming from the same people that *need* to have on the external rear mirror a label: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Objects_in_mirror_are_closer_than_they_appear All in all, if you §@ç#ing READ *something* (like the manual, most internet sites, etc.) besides the "supposedly false or deceiving advertisement" it is not like it is a "hidden defect", you can try the device, you can bring it back if it doesn't satisfy you, etc., etc. A much different thing (and much more serious/deceiving IMHO) are software updates, in a few years (well within what a "normal" user would expect a device to last) the BLOAT coming from OS (and installed applications) updates can easily reduce the available space in a very sensible manner. And now for NO apparent reason: jaclaz
  14. Yep and AFAIK you need a special permit to have in a sentence "only" related to "50 or 60" characters in a filename (the exception is if you are a programmer from MS and are giving names to folders that go in WinSXS or .net components ). jaclaz
  15. Likely you are hitting MAXPATH, i.e. a total of 260 characters in path, JFYI: http://serverfault.com/questions/232986/overcoming-maximum-file-path-length-restrictions-in-windows jaclaz
  16. ... and also -with a few "tricks" - also with 7 SP1, that's the essence of the links I provided, including an example session. jaclaz
  17. Well, not to put you down in any way , but that is the "normal" behaviour when you install "from hard disk" (as opposed to "from external media"), something that many OEM's and most technicians have done since good ol' NT times. jaclaz
  18. ... meaning that the spying already takes place within the browser and it would be a duplicate? jaclaz

    Undelete?

Ideally you should boot from another OS (Windows PE or Live Linux or similar) and image the disk "as is" to another device (external USB hard disk). Then, if all was done was to SHIFT+DEL, almost *any* undelete software can recover that data (unless entries or data were overwritten), each program may have its own method/algorithms to find and restore deleted files, since you know which files you deleted, Recuva would do (an issue with it is in my experience that usually lists more files than it can actually recover successfully), personally I would use DMDE: http://dmde.com/ and/or Testdisk: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/Undelete_files_from_NTFS_with_TestDisk but they are most probably "overkill" for just recovering deleted files, even ntfsundelete from a Live Linux would do. All in all, if you don't have such a bootable "live" OS, I would recommend you to use sysrescd: http://www.system-rescue-cd.org/SystemRescueCd_Homepage which includes Testdisk and is rather easy to setup/make into a bootable CD or USB stick. You will need anyway (besides the CD/DVD or a USB stick) an external (USB) hard disk as target for storing the recovered files. jaclaz
  20. To be fair, AFAICR there NEVER REALLY WAS an online help facility, what did exist were a number of completely unuseful pages giving NO help whatever, nor providing any meaningful info, at least for those events that needed some help/documentation and actually - sometimes - occurred and were logged. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/event-log-online-help-does-anyone-routinely-get/f36732d4-2b27-4c66-8f1d-3cfabadd2c30?auth=1 https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/47a4458a-8d6c-4553-950a-27a2e38124d2/event-log-online-help-not-working?forum=w7itprogeneral https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/91f362e8-7cf2-44bd-b5f6-367f13663bde/event-log-online-help-page-not-found?forum=winserver8gen If you prefer, you are now missing a "feature" that rarely or never worked. And you are not alone (meaning that also users of later OS's have the same or similar problem): http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-performance/event-viewer-event-log-online-help-link-returns/7c0f6c8f-a153-44a3-8dad-e6dd11f384d1?page=1 Google usually makes a better job, JFYI: http://www.howtogeek.com/school/using-windows-admin-tools-like-a-pro/lesson3/ There is even a site (totally and utterly untested by me) that provides (hopefully) the info that MS doesn't: http://www.eventid.net/evredirect.asp jaclaz
  21. Sure , no offence whatever intended, but it was not that easy to miss it , but you seemingly missed (or didn't like/reply to ) my last "status update", BTW one of the nice features of the board software (replying to the question "What's on your mind?", surprisingly not much used by the audience , and that could potentially give birth to countless witty one or two liners). UH OH! YOU HAVE USED NON-PERMITTED WORDS (OFFENCE, INTENDED, SEEMINGLY, STATUS, UPDATE, BTW, FEATURES, BOARD, SOFTWARE, SURPRISINGLY, AUDIENCE, POTENTIALLY, BIRTH, COUNTLESS,WITTY, LINERS) d@mn! jaclaz
  22. Oww, come on, just get to MSFN periodically (let's say once a day or every other day) and click on "Unread content" (top right) then personalize your stream or just use the standard one, or even better use (top left for UI consistence) a "level up", "Activity". Threads have tags, which are vital to quickly. at a glance, understand how cool a thread is, it is about time you enter the new millennium ... ... about this latter, it seems like right now max 3 tags can be given, comma separated, each between 3 and 10 characters: and of which ONLY TWO actually show without an additional click to unhide the third. I already had issue with using the tag "1D" (that I had to write as "1-D" and that was translated in small letters to "1-d"): http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/175435-linesquid-a-whole-new-laas/ and the adjective "preposterous" that stops at "prepostero" and that I had to translate to "cool" http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/175429-windows-10-runs-on-270-million-devices/ which anyway is more understandable to the general public, being a short, simple word (though behind the green glass door). And - while I am at it - I would like to recommend to everyone the use of: http://splasho.com/upgoer5/ which will definitely allow for a larger audience: jaclaz
  23. @submix8c JFYI, personally I wouldn't use "Team Viewer" and "dormant" in a same sentence, hopefully you are positive you can. jaclaz
  24. BUT - curiously enough - they are NOT a priority at the moment: jaclaz
