Most probably parts of the programs you have opened are in RAM, so they crash as soon as they swap or however access the SSD. The SSD itself or the motherboard may be defective, of course, and as well you could have something botched in the OS, but as said first step is always to check the PSU, particularly since you mentioned the need to discharge capacitors. You can load a Live Linux CD or a PE and see if it creates similar issues (just to exclude the OS), though this way you won't be using the SATA internal bus and the SSD in the same way, so it won't be enough to pinpoint the issue to a single point of failure. Probabilities (in my perverted mind ;)): 1) PSU 57.25 % 2) SSD 12.44 % 3) Motherboard/SATA bus 9.18% 4) OS 6.88 % 5) *Something else* 12,95% jaclaz

Well, this statement is however accurate : http://www.pcworld.com/article/3100358/windows/you-cant-turn-off-cortana-in-the-windows-10-anniversary-update.html Though it does sounds to me more like a menace than anything else ... jaclaz

4 Gb of which you will be using only around 3.25 or 3.5 with a "standard" x86 32 bit OS Sure, 2 Gb is better than 1 and 3 is better than 2, however ... @bphlpt Also not-so-nicely, actually pretty much "directly" or "bluntly", JFYI: jaclaz

The sad thing is that I am old, and have a good memory and I remember having actually paid: in 1986 5.000.000 Lire (that would be roughly 5.000 € of today) for a Fax machine (yes, thermal paper that you had to photocopy otherwise it would quickly fade away) in 1992 8.500.000 Lire (that would be around 7.000 € of today) for a IBM PS/2 (no, not a mouse, an actual PC, with a 386 AND math co-processor) in 1994 4.000.000 Lire (that would be around 3.000 € of today) for my beloved Compaq Concerto (a 486DX with 8 - eight! - Mb of RAM and a 120 Mb hard disk in a compact, portable, tablet-like device with detachable keyboard and touch - with special pen - screen) OT, and I will probably have something to say about it on the appropriate thread as soon as I will have had the time to familiarize myself with it, I just (two days ago) bought a seemingly nice (but el-cheapo ) 8" tablet with a case including a bluetooth keyboard, 2 Gb Ram, 32 Gb on board storage, dual boot Android and Windows 10 for around € 140. jaclaz

Try powering the PC with a spare PSU, it is incredible the number of seemingly unconnected and different issues a failing PSU can create. Ideally you could use a PSU tester (it is a little device that costs only a few bucks) to check your current PSU, but trying another one (which you may have hanging around) is just as effective and - unless it is a gaming rig - a (average, i.e. a good but not overly expensive) PSU could cost around 30 to 40 US$, and having a spare one is a good idea anyway. jaclaz

Dibya, sonny , with all due respect , it would IMNSHO be appreciated if you first fix them "wic files" (whatever they are), then you test them thoroughly, then you publish them yourself, then a few reputable members might want to test them and finally - if they are reported working - they could be added to a hfslip package. All these years tomasz86 has provided extremely reliable and tested/verified packages, most of the users liked them. let's not change this tradition, adding to them untested or unverified files, OK? Seriously, now, do you have them fixed or not? Have you already tested them (remember, thoroughly)? Are they ready for publication or - at the very least - in a Beta stage? jaclaz

History of Windows Update servicing and how it turned into a disaster
jaclaz replied to xpclient's topic in Windows 10
So if I get it right, what the OP wrote is BS (according to you) because it is personal experience (and it is wrong to use personal experience to make a global statement, while the OP actually stated how they represent his personal experience) and you use your personal experience to counter the claim? What do you mean by "MFT issues" (that you didn't have), $MFT corruption on NTFS filesystem(s)? I don' t think those were mentioned in the OP , the CHECKSUR tool repairs corruption in the Windows update mechanism and database, not anything in the disk or volume/filesystem, AFAICR. jaclaz -
Yep, that's the whole idea about "obscure" as opposed to "well-known" or "widely adopted" . jaclaz.

No need to apologize for the broken links , it was just an example for dencorso. You should actually apologize for having posted a senseless question , if I get this right , you are using a (BTW half-@§§ed or only partially correct) unattended.xml, whilst the OP you cited never talks of any unattended.xml, either "standard" or "modified". Hasn't the suspect that the variation you introduced in the method might actually be involved? If you follow someone's advice (or tutorial) you should - at least the first time - follow it EXACTLY, WITHOUT introducing ANY variation of ANY kind. And if and when you have an issue, you should DESCRIBE EXACTLY what you did (to the utmost detail, including - as an example in this case - the unattended.xml you used) and also DESCRIBE EXACTLY the error you have, not just a generic "it isn't working", REPORT what happens. Maybe this way you might get some senceful advice and/or ideas, otherwise you will likely get no assistance of wild guesses by clueless people. Another suggestion could be, since the information comes from https://community.spiceworks.com/ , to ask there, maybe the OP can provide you some more detailed info on the process. jaclaz

I sometimes wonder if the Fifth Amendment is applicable in cases like this ... Yep, the idea of OS install discs is - generically - that of installing an OS . The procedure to activate may vary from (within OEM licenses) OEM and OEM's, some (senselessly) use a "private" key (different from the one on the COA sticker). AFAICR Dell's original disksdo work with the key on the COA sticker, however. - though I believe - and this may depend also on the specific "series" of a same model, some Dell original CD/DVD's are actually "factory restore" media (which in your case would be good as well). If - as you originally posted - the machine has 512 Mb it is a bit "tight", expecially for nowadays most power hungry common activity (i.e. web surfing), if you can afford it, the more RAM you can out in that machine, the better anyway, if you are on a low budget another 512 Mb would be "enough" (total 1 Gb) though unless you can find some second hand sticks it will be difficult to find suitable 512 Mb RAM sticks at a fair price jaclaz

Sure, and guess what gave the original idea? Try READING first post of this thread. and JFYI: http://reboot.pro/topic/13049-extract-files-out-of-waik-without-downloading-whole-waik-first/ in other words this is an improvement (as in "faster", "easier"). jaclaz

Well, not really. As a matter of fact you can be pretty sure on average that they have NO IDEA of what the problem is, they won't actually be able to understand the problem, they will put you through any number of unrelated and pointless troubleshooting steps that will lead you to nowhere. Only when (and if) you will manage to escalate not one, but rather two levels, you may be able to communicate with a competent technician that will instantly understand the issue and very likely will be able to either explain the reason for the issue and/or solve it. You may want to appreciate how the situation is nicely symmetrical, as the user will normally provide invalid data, like the links that crashburn4u posted, which are broken and are actually: https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1390555-there-has-to-be-an-easier-way https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1479736-defer-windows-10-upgrade-via-downgrade-after-key-registration BTW, in the first one a (supposedly) MS representative named Chris cleared[1] the matter. The user will also say something like "it is not working" without providing any meaningful description of what he/she is doing, what actually happens, etc. jaclaz [1] "Cleared is to be intended as "cleared in MS terminology" which has a common synonyms "mixed up" or "mudded", in common English

Usually those PC's have (had) an OEM Windows install on them and have a COA sticker on the case, you can use *any* OEM CD/DVD to reinstall and it will activate normally. Of course if you can get (borrow or buy) an original DELL OEM CD/DVD it will have already the specific drivers. jaclaz

That is seemingly a "Barracuda LP Green". All we have about it is here (very, very little : basically only a number if improperly documented half guesses (most probably wrong). See if any of the good guys here: http://www.hddoracle.com/index.php? can provide some more information or however assist you. jaclaz -
It does , though not as obscure as you may think, I would guess that PC-BSD users talk little about the OS because they are busy using it to do some real work (to be fair some only play "Enemy of the State" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120660/ in their Faraday cage [1]) , unlike someone else ... jaclaz [1] A not so veiled reference to some "extremists" for secrecy and security that do permeate the BSD world (generally) and - though to a lesser extent - also the PC-BSD one.

Well, no. It must be proposed as a Linux distro suitable to people wanting to switch from Windows ... with a suitable GUI and all. jaclaz
