DISCLAIMER: This is not a finished product. It has minimal error trapping coded into it. Please look at the code prior to running. If you do not understand the code, you may not want to try these until they are in a more "finished" state. This works for XP Pro, but I'm not sure about Home Edition/2003/2000. I thought this might be useful since it automates things that people often forget about & people don't have to download any software. I have it running on a couple of machines & it works just fine. It's not as good as some of the stuff you pay for, but it's better than nothing. Maintenance Scripts NOTE: This is all done through VBScript, now.

That was one issue I had with KAV: I set the options & I still had to click Neutralize all to get the remaining detections. NOD just cleaned everything without bothering me.
-
I am trying this on one machine right now. The only issue is it does not offer real-time scanning. They are working on it for the 0.6 version.

Ok, here it is. This is a really quick test I ran, but it had interesting results. If anyone has suggestions let me know. I tried configuring them as similarly as possible, cranking up all the settings on the scans. Here is the link: http://www.pebcac.net/downloads/Documents/AV_Review.pdf

I've read through a lot of threads on MSFN and it seems that these are the Best two AV's over the past few years. I've used NOD32 and just installed Kaspersky to try it out. I am going to do some benchmarking on them to see if there are any huge differences. If anyone's interested, I can post what I find.

[LAN] Forward same traffic to mulitple PCs?
GeneralMandible replied to durex's topic in Networks and the Internet
I use a Windows 2000 Server (has all the software you need). Just setup port forwarding on your router. I think I found a guide somewhere on Microsofts site. -
What Firewall do you Use/Recommend?
GeneralMandible replied to Gouki's topic in Networks and the Internet
I'm still using Sygate. I just haven't come across anything free that works as well. It is simple and effective. I've tried ZoneAlarm and am not impressed. I also worked on a machine with ZoneAlarm that was blocking McAfee from getting updates. It was set to notify user of connection attempts & I even created rules for all of the McAfee services. It still blocked the updates. Turned off ZA...everything worked. It's too bad the crapiest company had to buy out the best free personal firewall. They can at least recognize a threat in the business world. Maybe their expensive personal firewall will work worth a **** now...naaah! -
What Anti-Virus do you Use/Recommend?
GeneralMandible replied to DigeratiPrime's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
NOD32 got my vote. It boiled down to the resource usage. I used it on my 2000 Server (AMD K6-II 350 w/ 128MB RAM) up until recently. It had a bad reaction to heat. Anyway, it ran great on that little old box for a couple of years. The interface is a little clunky which is the only downfall I can think of for it. I still have Norton SystemWorks 2004 on my main system w/ no problems & decent detection when I do something stupid. It does have problems removing things, though. I then have to remove them manually. It has some other functions that I like so I haven't jumped ship...yet. I definitely will never touch their Internet Security Suite. I have seen many problems first-hand with Symantec products & don't recommend them to anyone, nor will I buy anymore. I use AVG on my wife's computer and that works ok. I use McAfee Enterprise 8.0 on my laptop. Seems to work just fine and can detect some adware/spyware. I will have to try out Kaspersky. Since 2002, when I first heard of them, they've been held in high regard. Looks like another job for VMware. -
Winpooch - Free & OpenSource Firewall Guide
GeneralMandible replied to DigeratiPrime's topic in Networks and the Internet
I just came across this thread and it looks very interesting. Looks like it would take a little more work to configure it compared to Sygate (as far as firewall, might change in 0.6). I have it installed on a Virtual Machine & might have to see how it works with some spyware. -
[Question] Using SysPrep and the Computer Name
GeneralMandible replied to krispy104's topic in Windows XP
These shouldn't matter. They are the keys for user profiles. I would guess they get changed when the system reboots. -
Here is a link to a detailed article on how to setup ICS on 98SE. You must have 98SE, 98 doesn't support ICS. http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics_98

[LAN] Forward same traffic to mulitple PCs?
GeneralMandible replied to durex's topic in Networks and the Internet
With this setup, about the only way to do this is to setup a VPN box. This puts the remote machine on your network. Then you can comunicate with the other machines like you were right there. I setup a VPN server at home and it works great. I connect over a single port and then can run any apps that need to talk to any of my machines. -
Fedora for me...better go download it (I've been messing with SuSE) Mandriva didn't quite meet all the requirements. and I agree with Zxian and prathapml...VMware is the best way to go in order to really experience the OS.

Best Antispyware Program
GeneralMandible replied to Martin L's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
Absolutely! Anti-spyware does not just mean spyware removal. Most anti-virus programs are used to prevent viruses from ever infecting the computer in the first place, and secondly used to clean off an already infected computer. I'm sure you can see the parallel here. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think this is comparing apples to oranges. You need to compare things that do the same things like MS Anti-Spyware, Ad-Aware, Spybot, Spysweeper, etc. or SpywareBlaster, IE-SpyAd, Spybot (immunization function), etc. Right now you have to layer your protection anyway, since none of them detect or prevent 100%. -
Anyone tried ewido security suite?
GeneralMandible replied to GeneralMandible's topic in Software Hangout
Here is the link for it: ewido site -
I've used it only a couple of times on some badly infested machines and it seems to be pretty nice. Has anyone tried this? How does it compare to MS Anti-Spyware and Webroot SpySweeper? It did find things that Ad-Aware and Spybot didn't.

I have the BEFSR41, and it works great. I have also setup NetGear and D-Link routers, which are fairly simple and secure also. I worked on some no-name ones, and I wouldn't think they would last too long with how hot they run. If you stick with the major brands you should be ok.

possible to password prorect a floppy?
GeneralMandible replied to trickytwista's topic in Software Hangout
If they can't copy protect a DVD, I think it will be hard to do with a floppy, especially if you want to maintain functionality. About the only thing I can think of is some encryption software. I would think it would be awfully slow having to read and decrypt data from a floppy. -

Downloading and leaving your computer on won't overheat your video card. I would make sure you have all the patches for windows, DirectX, and Battlefield 2 installed. Also, check for BIOS updates and new drivers from ATI. If it only happens when you're playing graphics intensive games, then it could be the vid card overheating. MAke sure your case has adequate ventilation. If the heatsync on the vid card doesn't have a fan, you could add one. Hopefully some of this may help. Good luck!

Get a Ramdisk. Windows loads in a couple of seconds & no moving parts. I think Giga-byte makes a 4GB model, but you can spend a quite a bit more and get a 16 GB model from HyperOS Systems. Fast but spendy. That's what credit cards are for, right?

I ended up in Sims 2 University. It's kind of funny that I've never played it...and yet in real life I am going back to college. 5 years is never enough (plus the eye candy)

I voted for Outlook. Another client not in the list is Novell GroupWise. It's probably comparable to Lotus Notes. This poll should probably be split into two. With things like Outlook Express and Thunderbird in one and business class clients, Outlook, Lotus Notes, & GroupWise in another. Right now it's like comparing a compact to an SUV.

Wow...haven't been back here in a while. I got busy with other projects at work, so I have not worked on this for quite some time. I have recently started to focus on this at home. I have some books now, and have downloaded the 9.3 version. I think I'll put this on another VM. One of the things I want to do is getting it to work with a Novell network - mainly the network drives. Continuing the adventure...
