When a user logs onto a machine for the first time, the Security Center pops up. I have it set up how I want it and I don't want users to start playing with it. Is there a way to prevent this from happening?

Odd screen (IE5 about box)
GeneralMandible replied to GeneralMandible's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
I reinstalled IE6SP1 and that took care of the treeview problem in Windows Explorer. The about screen still has the IE 5 logo. The files "url.dll" and "comctl32.dll" are at inorrect versions also. I dont think this is the cause but it is something I need to fix. Apparently no one else has managed to install IE6 and keep the IE5 logo. Oh well. -
I've attached a picture of my IE about screen. This is on a Windws 2000 SP4 unattended install. I used nLite defaults to strip out anything I didn't need. There is another issue in Windows Explorer. When I hit the folders button. There is no tree view. It is all grayed out. Any thoughts?

As far as kids movies go, I make a decent xvid rip (a properly made 2CD rip with gordian knot does look good) of the DVD and leave it on the video server until the kids aren't bugging me every other day to watch it. Can't get more scratch-proof than that. I don't backup video DVDs... When I'm further in my career and making more money, I will be building one of those. Until then, I have to live with what I've got. I agree with you 100%.

For the price you are looking at, just get the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 or 256. I have the 128 and everything plays just fine.

separate networks within one network?
GeneralMandible replied to sleepyleon's topic in Networks and the Internet
Are you wanting them to not be able to see each other at all? Have you tried just setting up two different workgroups? Can you get more specific on exactly what you want? Thanks! -
Has someone heard "Free Virtual PC Software"?
GeneralMandible replied to argon007's topic in Software Hangout
VMWare is great! I've set up Windows 95/03 Server/2k Server and SuSE Linux. Gives you a lot of room to play without buying lots of hardware. -
OC'd Athlon XP 2600 T-bred Stays about 52 degrees celsius. Got a couple things to do to get it under 50. I use Motherboard Monitor 5. My next machine will use liquid cooling.

XP SP2 adds a pop-up blocker to IE6 and the firewall is supposed to have more configuration options and be more LAN friendly. I haven't had a chance to do some testing with the firewall yet.

I've been using FireFox for a couple of months now and I'm liking it

Backups are the way to go, especially with kids. Has anyone tried the TDK Armor DVD-R's? They're supposed to be 100x more scratch resistant than a regular DVD. Eventually I'll get around to ordering a couple.

Some more info... Pepsi has Gatorade, in which Coke then started making Powerade. In the original formula for Pepsi, it had vanilla. So technically, Pepsi came out with a vanilla version first (1898). If Coke is best because it was first, then Ford is the greatest American car for the same reason. Intel is better than AMD, man is better than woman, the chicken is better than the egg....or is it the egg is better than the chicken?
-
What are you doing with those bottles to make that an issue? Let's not forget where Coke's name came from, cocaine. That's one way to form a loyal customer base. Also, during WWII several of Coke's top executives in Germany were prominent Nazi members. Maybe they're funding Al Qaeda training camps these days. Pepsi's better. I'd even go with Sam's Choice from Wal-Mart before buying Coke.

Does anyone know where I can get Windows 98 drivers without online? I installed a PCI card on a machine and I can't find my 98 disks. I guess I didn't copy all the driver files over like on my other one. Thanks to anyone that can help.

It sounds like you have some malware running in the background that is locking things up. Try running Spybot, Ad-Aware, and a virus scan to make sure your system is clean. Also, look at your processes, and see if there are some that you can shutdown that are not needed (don't do this if you are not sure). Reboot and try to install. If that didn't work, I would manually delete IE6 out of the filesystem and registry and then reinstall. If you know how to do this, go for it. Otherwise, you would probably have to redo the system or go to a different browser like DarkPhoenix said. Good Luck!

Company Needs to stop employees surfing and gettin
GeneralMandible replied to bashy's topic in Networks and the Internet
I would add a hardware firewall at your internet gateway. On that, you could set all the excluded sites. I believe with some firewalls you can get a default list, and then add to it. As far as antivirus, I recommend using TrendMicro's solution. ServerProtect on every server, and OfficeScan 6.5 on every workstation. The new 6.5 version is great. It has antivirus, firewall, and a repair tool that removes malware and malicious code. The firewall is policy based. You can create several policies, and give people different access. As far as free tools, Spybot use the Immunize feature. That should help a little. They also recommend Spyware Blaster, which prevents a lot of Spyware from getting on your machine. Another thing to look at is email policies (if you use Outlook, GroupWise, etc.). I would filter out executables and attachments that could contain malicious code. The biggest danger on a network is an uneducated user. -
I used to mix alcohol with coke, until I tried it once with Pepsi. Never looked back. Pepsi is a lot smoother, and it's the choice of a new generation. How many people remember that ad campaign?

Poll: Which GFX would you buy at the moment?
GeneralMandible replied to Crispy's topic in The Poll Center
Right now the 9800 would give you the most bang for the buck. The 4.9 beta drivers seem to work good (also DNA & Omega drivers do well) Use ATI Tool and overclock it a little Right now it might be worth waiting until the end of the year for some decent buys on the PCI-X cards. -
English here. I'm surprised no one has complained and asked where "American" is.

I have a site I set up www.pebcac.net just for personal use. I have a link on there to a subfolder called football. It is on the left hand side. I want to set a generic user and password for this folder. I can give that to the people in my fantasy football league for them to access information. I don't want it open for anyone to view. How do I do this on a Win2k Server with IIS 5.0? Thank you.

I am making this post from SuSE with the Gnome desktop from the Galeon browser on a virtual machine on top of my XP machine. I think I might try putting this on a machine that I can't get the NIC to work. The I might throw Apache on it and use it as a web server. Have to think about it though. I'll leave this thread alone for awhile now.
