  1. The (few) cable connectors with no hole corresponding to pin #20 I have seen were "solid plastic", if yours is a "normal" connector with a "plastic pin" inserted in it at #20, you can of course try removing it. I used to push the pins trough the 0.5mm plastic, and yes, I did that many times before without any problems. Older motherboard with just PIO mode or UDMA2 used to have that extra useless pin. if the pin breaks removed it indeed with some pliers by bending it a few times more.Sure you do this with risk of breaking things, just be careful, I don't want to be held responsible .
  2. I still don't know the model of that laptop but I would guess it can handle up to 4GB. If it supports the 4GB then I would for use fill it up to the max. You are not only saving your battery, but performance will be better when playing games. Memory is most likely easy to install; just take out a few screws and place the RAM in, just make sure you remove the battery and keep it disconnected from the power outlet. In the other topic I made I asked you for the model number so we could look into of what could be possible with your laptop.
  3. You could try (3), but I would look what (6) could bring in the near future: For now it will enable UDMA but nothing more than that. I wonder if they could get the ACHI/RAID feature to work, that's not something you do over night. However, abusing the drivers from a ICH7 and rebuild them for ICH10 would not work, there are too much differences. You will get more response on this in the Windows 2000 section, moving it there...
  4. That looks better, I just hope that the 9800 will not overheat too much, just be sure it gets enough air from under the laptop. The good part is that it's easy to replace a damaged video card . So, what model is it? And for 1000USD that's not expensive at all!
  5. It would not be a problem even if it was a 140W TP CPU. Just use one 12V line for your GPU if posible.
  6. You need to hook up a PS/2 keyboard to make it work. I don't know if the DELL has PS/2 ports but if it has you should have gotten a PS/2 KVM switch from for example IOgear and use it with a PS/2 keyboard and Mouse.
  7. Hello kilo bravo, welcome to the forum . I would start to check the memory with memtest86. Besides your RAM, it could be a bad thermal paste/pad between your CPU cooler and CPU. Also check if all fans are spinning up.
  8. You like the man to be poor .Check out the Lenovo website as well, I would say that they give the best for your money.
  9. Okay, that's strange as it should only show a ICH9R, so, you don't need to edit the INI file. If you reinstall that system then I would integrate the drivers into the windows setup. PS. the second controller is a JMicron JMB363...
  10. + Your topics like: Makes me want to say one thing: IF you like the games, get a system that can pull it! A system build up out of components AND a supported OS for the latest drivers AND directX. I know you don't need a state of the art machine with OS to run older games, but you might find some, even free, computers WITH a XP license attached to it so it still can pull the latest directX 9 AND plenty of power to run the older games. I hope you didn't downgrade your OS on your laptop when it came with Vista or so...
  11. AS5? Better to use Céramique as AS5 does conduct electricity and is a pain to remove when you smudge it on other components. Most notebooks/laptops use thermal pads on the CPU and GPU, so you probably have to fill up the gap with some a copper sheet or so.
  12. You can turn of those "are you sure" questions . I would hate it too when my future wife would ask me that* all the time! * not going into details...
  13. Indeed, you have an ICH9R so no editing is needed there.
  14. No 800 and 1066, heh... well, try 833MHz I would say.
  15. Welcome James, I moved the other part of your topic to the hardware section. And I agree about "One woman is enough" .
  16. Welcome to the forum! I'm splitting up your topic and moving the new topic to the hardware section as it's good hardware you need in the first place. Unless you are willing to drop down some 1500USD you will not find much good to play games on. I wonder, do you really need a laptop? For some 800USD you or the store can build a machine that runs most games on high setting with a 1440*900 resolution (17 or 19" screen).
  17. Try the OEM / Universal ones, same stuff just cheaper, some even fit on more notebooks as well .
  18. But that should be one part. How does it look now?
  19. Call ACER for a replacement as the use the same PSUs for more models. There are universal ones sold for about 25 Pounds. Also I found this as an option, PSA Power 90W AC Adpater. Just check if it's the same connector, the older laptops use in general 90W PSUs and deliver 18-20 volts. Edit: , took me so long to push enter, nitroshift beat me with it for more than 6 hours , o well---
  20. Yep. You do not need glue of any kind if you replace the LCD screen with a new one. As a standard comparison: 1 (one) scrap (aluminium) tin piece € 0.01 1 (one) new dual component epoxy glue € 3.50 Total amount (if applicable) € 3.51 You can stretch the life with it indeed, I know I would, but official the screen needs an replacement. The contacts are getting oxidised over time, especially when they get warm from the backlight. Over time it will look like this: But hey, anlaoch, go for it if you can .
  21. Windows wasn't shutting down well, and it still isn't. It has something to do with the BIOS for sure or and the chipset drivers plus I blame powersafe functions too. In Safe-mode it shuts down well, this is why it "remembers" that the driver is installed. Good it "works" and have fun with Vista, I'm sure you like it better than XP .
  22. chuckman45, you have been warned.
  23. Tjeez... Indeed, it's designed for Vista...Did you try to install the drivers in safemode?
  24. That's a sync line on your screen, what you see is that the screen already refreshed before the video card could build up the screen or that the video card has build up 1.5 screens already, you might say it's a half frame out of sync. Set your refresh rate higher and see if that would fix your problem. Also enable V-sync in that game. There is no need to jump to another form, we have enough knowledge to help people out here. Also the card isn't defective and it's seen with more models and LCD screens. Welcome to the forum by the way .
